When you think about someone having a midlife crisis, you probably think of a man getting divorced, stepping out with a younger woman, and buying a sports car. But my guest today says the often jokey, mockable trope of the midlife crisis we have in our popular culture discounts the fact that the sense of dissatisfaction people can feel in their middle years is quite real, and that the questions it raises are profond, philosophical, and worth earnestly grappling with. His name is Kieran Setiya, and he's a professor of philosophy and the author of Midlife: A Philosophical Guide. Kieran and I first discuss what researchers have uncovered about whether the midlife crisis really exists, how it might be better described as a kind of midlife malaise, and how Kieran's own sense of life dissatisfaction began when he was only in his mid-thirties. We then explore the philosophical reframing that can help in dealing with the existential issues that the journey into midlife often raises, including feeling like you've missed out on certain possibilities and feeling regret over your mistakes and misfortunes. We also talk about how to shift out of one primary cause of the midlife malaise — the sense that your life is merely about putting out fires and checking off boxes.Resources Related to the PodcastSeasons of a Man's Life by Daniel LevinsonAoM series on Levinson's researchTransformations: Growth and Change in Adult Life by Roger GouldPassages: Predictable Crises of Adult Life by Gail SheehyOrville Gilbert Brim's MacArthur study on "Midlife in the United States"David Branchflower's study on the U-shaped curve of happinessJohn Stuart MillSunday Firesides: Youth Is Not an IdentityAoM Podcast #770: Philosophical Tools for Living the Good LifeAoM Podcast #620: How to Deal With Life's RegretsAoM Article: The George Bailey Technique — Mentally Erase Your Blessings for Greater Joy and OptimismAoM Podcast #527: Father Wounds, Male Spirituality, and the Journey to the Second Half of Life With Richard RohrAoM Podcast #598: Journeying From the First to the Second Half of Life With James HollisConnect With Kieran SetiyaKieran's WebsiteKieran on TwitterKieran's Podcast

Will Wright is joined by Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers who discusses his book 'Building a Civilization of Love' and addresses the topics of prejudice, racism, language, and identity in Christ. He emphasizes the importance of love and seeing the image of God in others as the solution to racial division. Deacon Harold also explores the distinction between prejudice and racism, and the need for self-reflection and empathy to overcome prejudice. He discusses the role of the Catholic Church in addressing racial issues and the importance of an eschatological perspective. Additionally, he examines critical race theory, liberation theology, and the Black Lives Matter movement in relation to the Catholic faith. In this conversation, Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers discusses the agenda of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and its impact on the nuclear family. He also highlights the high abortion rate among black women and the eugenicist history of Planned Parenthood. Deacon Harold challenges communities of color to address internal issues and embrace their faith to bring healing and reconciliation. He advocates for using inclusive terms like 'people of color' instead of 'African American' and suggests practical steps for transcending race, such as appreciating cultural diversity and promoting conversation. Deacon Harold emphasizes the importance of incorporating saints of color in Catholic education and worship, and he praises the Catholic Church for its focus on Jesus Christ and the gospel in addressing racial issues. Change is a constant. Changes big and small are always happening in our lives, while the world also changes around us. His name is Brad Stulberg, and he's the author of Master of Change: How to Excel When Everything Is Changing – Including You. So we are entering into the height of the summer season Shane has abandoned John for two weeks to traipse around central Europe. However, we aren't going to abandon our listeners here on C&SI podcast so we do have some listening for you this week.As usual we have our regular run through the liturgical odds and ends in part one including the up coming saints and solemnities including of course the Assumption of Our Lady on August 15th.In part two of the  podcast this week, we borrow with full credit from WoF where Bishop Robert Barron and Brandon Vogt discuss the issue of why men today are looking outside Christianity for spiritual wisdom. Bishop Barron discusses an interesting article was published at The Gospel Coalition titled “Savior or Stoics? Why Modern Men Look for Spiritual Wisdom Outside the Church”. The author observed how a growing number of young men are filling a moral and spiritual void in their lives by turning to modern self-help books based on ancient Stoic thinkers. Authors such as Jordan Peterson, Ryan Holiday, and Navy SEAL Jocko Willink have won large followings of men by translating the principles of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus into modern advice. Why is Stoicism so appealing to many young men today? And what lessons might Christians learn from this development? Part three of our course is a brief sharing of the Sunday gospel (Matthew 14:22-33) and the account of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee.

Dante's Divine Comedy is considered one of the greatest works of literature ever written. The poem not only imagines the three parts of the afterlife, but serves as an allegory for the spiritual journey of the human soul. Here to take us on a tour of the journey Dante describes is Robert Barron, a bishop in the Catholic Church. Today on the show, Bishop Barron offers a bit of background on the Divine Comedy and how it resonates as a story of the search for greater meaning that commonly arises in your mid-thirties. We then delve into Dante's journey through Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. We discuss why Dante can't initially climb the redemptive mountain of purgatory and has to go through hell first, the importance of having a tough-but-encouraging guide for any spiritual journey, why hell is an inverted cone that gets narrower and colder at the bottom, and why traitors inhabit its lowest layer. We then get into what it takes to climb Mount Purgatory, why heaven in the Divine Comedy doesn't get much attention, and what Dante finds when he gets there. Along the way, Bishop Barron describes the meaning behind the religious imagery Dante used in his poem, as well as insights that can be applied to any spiritual journey.Resources Related to the EpisodeDivine Comedytranslated by Mark Musa (Bishop Barron's favorite translation)Word on Fire course on Dante and the Divine ComedyAoM Podcast #527: Father Wounds, Male Spirituality, and the Journey to the Second Half of Life With Fr. We should stop supporting media, individuals, and organizations that create, encourage, and perpetuate racist stereotypes, or who propose violence as a solution. Racist ideologies create images that leave negative impressions on susceptible and vulnerable minds and hearts, especially those of children. Reach out with compassion to those of different races and hear their stories, respond with empathy, and work with humble, contrite hearts to build bridges of understanding in order to acknowledge the unique gifts we all bring to the Body of Christ. How does the way men experience spirituality differ from the way women engage it? What obstacles particularly keep men from experiencing greater meaning in their lives, and what paradigm shifts help them find it? My guest today has been thinking about those questions over the six decades he's served as a Franciscan friar. His name is Richard Rohr, and he's authored numerous books and devoted a significant part of his vocation to working with men -- both ministering to those who are incarcerated, and in leading male initiation rituals and retreats. If you enjoyed my discussion last month with David Brooks about life's first and second mountain, you'll want to listen to this one. Father Rohr has long taught the same concept, arguing that life is divided into a first and second half. We begin our discussion by exploring the difference between these two halves, and what it takes to move to the second half of life, including embracing non-dualistic thinking. We also talk about what prevents men from maturing into the second half of life, including having "father wounds." We then discuss how male spirituality differs from female spirituality, why church doesn't appeal to men, the male need for initiation, and what it means to do shadow work. We end our conversation with what fathers can do to help their sons embrace the spiritual side of life. Get the show notes at aom.is/rohr.

Why is the Catholic Church who She says She is? When Paul wrote to Timothy in Chapter 3 of 1 Timothy, why did he tell him that “the church” was the pillar and foundation of truth and it would tell how one ought to behave in the household of God? Who is this church? Who leads it? Who protects the teachings? How can we trust it? On the 500th anniversary of the protestant revolution, we knew Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers was the man for the job to answer these questions. As Catholic women striving to thrive in our trenches of our feminine vocations, why is submitting to Mother Church, The Catholic Church, a vital piece of our lives? Our Dynamic Deacon does not shy from the Truth nor does he speak without charity. We humbly pray that all will be touched by the beauty and fullness that our Catholic faith offers us. We have a great gift, let us treasure it and share it with all of our seperated brothers and sisters and call for the unity that has been protected and upheld in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Jesus prayed for unity in John 17, let us do the same. Scripture:  “14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love”. –Ephesians 4:14-16 Saint Quote: “There are not over a hundred people in the United States who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church – which is, of course, quite a different thing.”  (Excerpt taken from a talk by Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen on Radio Replies – click here to read it’s entirety)

3 Messages Life-Giving Men Communicate to Others (especially their sons)

Imagine you are in a room and two different type of men walk in. One is encouraging, inspiring and vulnerable. He's not just there physically, but he has shown up emotionally as well. He's connected to those around him. And because he shows up this way, others will feed off that and grow. He's what I call a life-giving man. But the other man is there only physically, not emotionally. He's not connected to those around him. He tends to be critical, lives in fear, and is often quick to anger or be impatient. He's someone who sucks the life out of those around him...the total opposite of a life-giving man.   In this episode I share briefly this idea of life-giving man which I have written about extensively, but I also dive into 3 important messages that life-giving men communicate to those around them. In this episode I talk a lot about the father/son relationship, but just because you may not have a son, there are probably other men in your life that need you to be a life-giver. And if you are woman listening to this episode, then I talk about the importance of having this insight into the men in your life.   In my book What it Means to be a Man, I quote a passage from Richard Rohr's book, The Wild Man's Journey: Reflections on Male Spirituality. In this quote you get an essence of these two very different men. "When a father tells a child that he can do something, he can do it. I don't know why that is, except to say that there is some mysterious energy that passes from the male to his children. It is some sort of creative energy that can make things be when they are not, and without which things cannot come to be. When male energy is absent, creation does not happen, either in the human soul or in the world. Nurturance happens, support and love perhaps, but not that new 'creation out of nothing' that is the unique prerogative associated with the masculine side of God...Without the father's energy, there is a void, an emptiness in the soul which nothing but that kind of energy can fill. I have seen it in too many people, men especially. It is a hollow yearning that feeds on praise incessantly and is never satisfied. It is a black hole that sucks in reward after reward and is never brightened by it. It becomes a nesting place of demons--of self-doubt, fear, mistrust, cynicism, and rage. And it becomes the place from which those demons fly out to devour others." In this episode we explore: what a life-giving man is and isn't. the three questions that a father "needs" to communicate to his son according to Larry Crabb in his book The Silence of Adam. how men can use those three questions to be life-givers to those around them. how to look for opportunities to be a life-giving man in your relationships whether in marriage, parenting, the work place, etc. Please listen and subscribe to my podcast in the following places, and then leave a comment letting me know what you liked about the show, or what guest you would like to hear from. While there are many books written about specific aspects of spirituality for Catholic Men and the Protestants have been writing about it for a long time in books such as Wild at Heart, there isn't much material that tries to present a full vision of Catholic male spirituality. Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers means to correct that with his new book, Behold the Man - A Catholic Vision of Male Spirituality.
