I have a question for you. What do you know about your early years? Like from birth to age two? And what do you know about your mom's pregnancy with you? If you're like me, not a whole lot. Turns out, though, this is really good information to have. According to this week's podcast guest, Colleen West, these early years and your experiences within have an incredible influence on the development of your relationship with food. Especially when it comes to the nurturance and attunement given to you by your caretakers. I'll let Colleen explain it herself: "For babies that don't get tended to reliably, they end up with more need to autoregulate, to soothe from the outside. And that often gets linked with food. And it begins a whole lot of other behaviors and deep burdens that last long into your life, unless those young parts get cared for." Did that just resonate with a lot of your parts? I know it did with mine. Preverbal parts are Colleen's specialty, and I'm thrilled to have her back on the show to take a much deeper dive than we did in our first conversation (catch that episode here). Colleen is all about creating connection: between you and your parts, between you and your loved ones, between you, your community, and the wider world. She is unabashedly optimistic about the human capacity to heal, to tap into the wellspring of compassion that is Self. Her professional focus is healing preverbal attachment trauma. As a Marriage and Family Therapist and IFS Consultant, she devotes herself to training and mentoring psychotherapists, and writing. Thanks to Zoom, she is training therapists all over the world. She is author of We All Have Parts: An Illustrated Guide to Healing Trauma with Internal Family Systems (2021) and The IFS Flip Chart (2023). She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and the fabulous dog Sky. In her leisure, she likes spending time in nature and preparing feasts for family and friends. More at www.colleenwest.com and www.smarttherapytools.com. On this week's podcast, Colleen and I talk about how those early years are so important, and how a lack of nurturance and attunement by parents (with even the best of intentions) can lead to the use of food--or the restriction of food--as a soothing mechanism. In the episode, we discuss: Why hunger can lead to feelings of panic How a lack of nurturance in infancy leads to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and fear, and how all of that can impact our relationship with food How our early experiences can lead us to disconnect from our bodies and their experiences of hunger The behavioral cues that indicate a lack of nurturance in infancy How IFS can help to heal the exiles that weren't cared for Colleen also leaves us with three important points: If you're currently a parent of young children, do your best to be present with them; If you're in therapy, slow down and notice your parts and your bodily sensations, and focus on your preverbal years; and Your own Self-Energy can heal your parts. This was truly a wonderful, aha-inducing episode that I know will resonate with your parts. Take a listen! Mother loss comes in many forms: cancer, suicide, illness, murder, accidents. And while many women still have their mothers, they have lost them to abandonment, addiction, memory malfunction, mental illness and more. Kelly McDaniel is an author and clinician supporting women on the journey toward relational wholeness. In her first book, Ready to Heal, she addresses cultural double standards and family wounds that set women up for addictive relationship habits. Her second book, Mother Hunger, is the culmination of 30 years of research, clinical expertise, and a deep understanding of mothering myths. Mother Hunger provides women a name for the misunderstood root of poor eating patterns, chronic relationship disappointment, and distorted self image. In Mother Hunger what Kelly does is validate the experience of mother loss by giving a poignant name to a phenomenon that many will know very well and offer an elegant and useful framework for healing. In short, this is a conversation about childhood attachment injuries and their lasting impact. Kelly destigmatized the shame that comes with being under-mothered and offers a healing path with powerful tools that include lifestyle changes and therapeutic interventions. Earth-centered cultures have always held that each person is born into this world with their own unique gifts and strengths, but this knowing has been put aside by our modern, disconnected overculture. One of the most important and challenging skills we can develop is learning to regulate our strong emotions. While it's very natural to have fluctuations in how we feel about others and ourselves, for some people these ups and downs are particularly intense. At clinical levels, this is known as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD is characterized by a pattern of instability in a person's emotions, moods, behavior, self-image, and relationships. BPD is fairly common, and it's even more common for "borderline-y tendencies" to show up in our lives. On this episode of Being Well, Dr. Rick and Forrest Hanson explore what to do when these tendencies show up, how to cultivate a healthy balance of sensitivity and tolerance to distress, regulating and nurturing ourselves, and how to navigate relationships with others when they exhibit borderline tendencies. As a disclaimer, formal diagnosis of any condition should be done with a medical professional working directly with the person in question. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 This talk will describe how we can evolve more nurturing societies. The human and biological sciences have converged in recent years in showing that individuals and human groups are most likely to thrive in nurturing conditions. Nurturing environments minimize toxic biological and social conditions, richly reinforce diverse forms of prosocial behaviour, limit influences and opportunities for antisocial or unhealthful behaviour, and promote psychological flexibility, which involves mindfully acting in the service of one's values. Considerable research has shown how we can create these conditions. The talk will review what we know about the development of antisocial behaviour and antisocial groups. It will then describe family, school, and community programs and policies that foster prosocial development. Finally, it will describe the growing movement to promote prosociality around the world. -- Anthony Biglan Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at Oregon Research Institute and President of Values to Action. His book, The Nurture Effect: How the science of human behaviour can improve our lives and our world, describes how behavioural science research has brought us to the point where it is possible to evolve a society in which virtually every person is living a productive life in caring relationships with others. His new book, Rebooting Capitalism: How we can forge a society that works for everyone, explains how we evolved a form of capitalism over the last 50 years that has impoverished millions of Americans, undermined the regulation of harmful business practices, and corrupted most of the major sectors of society. The book provides a roadmap for how we can evolve a more nurturing form of capitalism. -- Links: Check out our next event: http://theweekenduniversity.com/events Dr Anthony's website: https://tonybiglan.com Dr Anthony's books: https://amzn.to/2Or2WZQ -- This episode is sponsored by our upcoming “Mind-Body Psychotherapy” Online Conference, taking place on 29th May, 2022. At this pivotal time in human consciousness evolution, at the milestone of COVID-19, the most important practice we can do is neither physical/emotional, or financial. It is the selfless practice of prayer – spiritual service that helps to restore ancestral memory so that we may heal the long ignored rift with the spirit world. tl;dr Nurturance culture, rape culture, accountability, and boundaries with Nora Samaran. Don't miss the October cohort of Power in Pleasure, my 5-week online course dedicated to exploring your pleasure. Details are at dawnserra.com/pleasurecourse. Enrollment closes soon! This week, I'm joined by Nora Samaran, author of the essay, "The Opposite of Rape Culture is Nurturance Culture" and the recently published book, Turn This World Inside Out: The Emergence of Nurturance Culture, out by AK Press. Grab the book here. Nora and I spent three hours chatting the day we recorded this episode, so needless to say there was a lot for us to unpack and explore. In the main episode for the show, we talk about nurturance culture, rape culture, raising the bar for the relationships we have and what it means to have relational responsibility, how our brains are wired for interdependence, attachment styles and how culturally we value avoidant attachment styles while vilifying anxious attachment styles. We dive into why there's so much heartbreak in swimming against the current of neoliberalism and capitalism when we prioritize interdependence, but also the richness available there. What does mutuality look like? What does care in our communities look like? Nora offers some beautiful examples of what it means for communities to protect people facing harm while honoring the humanity of the person or people causing the harm, and how we can be more accountable in ways that nurture us all. She calls it the 'double move' and it all starts with meeting the need without centering our own shame and guilt. Then, for Patreon, our bonus conversation is all about gaslighting. It's fantastic. Nora shares how the culture we live in lies to itself and creates fictions, why we are all so disconnected and dissociated, why when we're addressing patterns of gaslighting and harm it's not a "meet in the middle" thing, the neurology of gaslighting, and trauma bonding. A rabbi and parent, Sandy Eisenberg Sasso wants us to think about how we might teach our children’s souls, not just their minds. She says nurturing the spiritual lives of our children is the work of understanding for ourselves “what really matters in life, what’s precious, what’s more important than earning a living and going through our daily routine.” Sandy Sasso is rabbi emerita of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis, where she was spiritual leader for 36 years. Her wonderful books for adults and children include “God’s Paintbrush” and “Midrash: Reading the Bible with Question Marks.” Find the transcript at onbeing.org.
Nurturance is about meeting the young people’s needs for nurturing relationships and physical care. Some of these are more obvious, like good food, clothing, shelter, and others can be more difficult to define or measure but we think of them as being ‘looked after’, having ‘normal’ things and experiences, and feeling like a home. You will be hearing from two young people Jason and Chantel, as well as Ellia, Peter & Chad who are very experienced residential care staff members. You will also be hearing from two members of the Expert Advisory Group who assisted in the development of the Hope and Healing Framework – Lisa Hillan and Howard Bath.

From 1933 to 1945, 17 million people were captured, tortured, tormented, and slaughtered, dragged away from families never to be whole again, under Adolf Hitler’s rule in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. 17 million people in concentration camps. Madison Square Garden in New York City holds 20,000 people. The Colosseum in Ancient Rome held 50,000. How do we wrap our minds around 17 million people put to death? One of the most notorious camps, Auschwitz, bred some of the worst and most atrocious behavior from Nazi guards and this weeks lady is no exception. The Hyena of Auschwitz, they called her and her presence in the camp made blood run cold and bodies shrink from the doors. Pour straight alcohol this week and take a deep breath as Pamela dives into the monstrosities of Nazi Guard Irma Ida Grese, and what it takes to be a “Beautiful Beast”.

My guest today is a literature professor who writes a blog called Dating Tips For The Feminist Man, under the pen name "Nora Samaran". Last year, she wrote an article that went viral, changed my life, and transformed my marriage. It's called "The Opposite Of Rape Culture Is Nurturance Culture". Just so we have a basic agreement of what is meant by “rape culture”, a quick Google brings up this definition: a society or environment whose prevailing social attitudes have the effect of normalizing or trivializing sexual assault and abuse. Wikipedia goes a little bit further: Rape culture is a sociological concept used to describe a setting in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality. Behaviors commonly associated with rape culture include victim blaming, slut shaming, sexual objectification, trivializing rape, denial of widespread rape, refusing to acknowledge the harm caused by some forms of sexual violence, or some combination of these. Nora's article does a beautiful job of summarizing attachment theory as it applies to adult relationships and then stepping back to look a the larger implications within a patriarchal culture. We talk about how western culture shames men for feeling and nurturing, how it invisibilizes white supremacy and anti-black racism for white people. In this episode, I give a brief summary of attachment theory and the four main attachment styles. You can read more here in the article where I dish about my own marriage. Off the top, Nora mentions The Icarus Project, along with bell hooks and Kimberlé Crenshaw. We also mention Tada Hozumi and cite his work over at SelfishActivist.com. Adrienne Maree Brown is quoted and she is definitely someone to learn from. The book The Dispossessed, by Ursula LeGuin, is described as well.

Mystics have long taught that the Divine Presence can be felt in the heart, mind, and body of anyone who asks for it. The felt sensation is one of warmth, comfort, true love and unconditional support. We can bathe in this in good times and bad, and it never fails to soothe the soul. We often forget that this is always available and so sacrifice the opportunity for the rich reward of feeling cared for at the deepest level. In this Musing we discuss how to call for that gift from our Guides, Angels, Avatars, and the Divine Source itself, and how to revel in it. Please join us for our New Year celebration of Divine Nurturance.

Imagine you are in a room and two different type of men walk in. One is encouraging, inspiring and vulnerable. He's not just there physically, but he has shown up emotionally as well. He's connected to those around him. And because he shows up this way, others will feed off that and grow. He's what I call a life-giving man. But the other man is there only physically, not emotionally. He's not connected to those around him. He tends to be critical, lives in fear, and is often quick to anger or be impatient. He's someone who sucks the life out of those around him...the total opposite of a life-giving man. In this episode I share briefly this idea of life-giving man which I have written about extensively, but I also dive into 3 important messages that life-giving men communicate to those around them. In this episode I talk a lot about the father/son relationship, but just because you may not have a son, there are probably other men in your life that need you to be a life-giver. And if you are woman listening to this episode, then I talk about the importance of having this insight into the men in your life. In my book What it Means to be a Man, I quote a passage from Richard Rohr's book, The Wild Man's Journey: Reflections on Male Spirituality. In this quote you get an essence of these two very different men. "When a father tells a child that he can do something, he can do it. I don't know why that is, except to say that there is some mysterious energy that passes from the male to his children. It is some sort of creative energy that can make things be when they are not, and without which things cannot come to be. When male energy is absent, creation does not happen, either in the human soul or in the world. Nurturance happens, support and love perhaps, but not that new 'creation out of nothing' that is the unique prerogative associated with the masculine side of God...Without the father's energy, there is a void, an emptiness in the soul which nothing but that kind of energy can fill. I have seen it in too many people, men especially. It is a hollow yearning that feeds on praise incessantly and is never satisfied. It is a black hole that sucks in reward after reward and is never brightened by it. It becomes a nesting place of demons--of self-doubt, fear, mistrust, cynicism, and rage. And it becomes the place from which those demons fly out to devour others." In this episode we explore: what a life-giving man is and isn't. the three questions that a father "needs" to communicate to his son according to Larry Crabb in his book The Silence of Adam. how men can use those three questions to be life-givers to those around them. how to look for opportunities to be a life-giving man in your relationships whether in marriage, parenting, the work place, etc. Please listen and subscribe to my podcast in the following places, and then leave a comment letting me know what you liked about the show, or what guest you would like to hear from. Heather Wolfe trained as a nurse in Ireland, her native country, and lived in the USA for 38 years, where she studied and practiced many different healing modalities. She taught Polarity Therapy both in Ireland and America, which includes CranioSacral Therapy, Chakra and Sound Healing, as well as Spiritual Awareness/Knowledge, Movement, Communication Skills and Nutritional Wellbeing. She is a Reiki Master and MariEl Healer, Quantum Touch and Therapeutic Touch Practitioner, Magnified Healer, Mind Body Yoga and QiGong Instructor, and has trained in Ericksonian Psychotherapy, and Psychosynthesis as well as Coaching, Addiction Rehabilitation and Detoxification. She includes the plant kingdom in her sessions in the form of flower remedies and Essential Oils. Heather spent time in Central America with Dr. Rosita Arvigo studying Mayan Abdominal Massage, a wonderful technique brought to us by Rosita's Shamanic Teacher, Don Elijio Panti to align the uterus. Her diagnosis and recovery from breast cancer in December 2006 began a journey that deepened her insights into life and death, which she now brings to her work. After surgery, she declined the offer of radiation and chemotherapy and explored other ways to regain 100% life force. In this process she used both systems of medicine – conventional and alternative – finding both useful for more complete healing. This experience prompted her book, A Guide to Breast Cancer: A Whole Body A to Z for Prevention and Healing – A Conventional and Alternative Approach (available on backtosource.com and Amazon). Today our focus is on the fact that we are in Earth School. It all begins and ends with Source/God/Goddess/Great Spirit/Love, or whatever we want to call it/them! We use her book as a map somewhat, beginning with the letter Y - YOU. "It is very important to pay attention to who we are as humans on the Spiritual Journey," Heather says, "and there are some simple tools for understanding and revelation! Astrology, Numerology, Dosha etc." Then we move from the outside in - Air, Water, Exercise – talking about The Yoga of Nurturance: Creating Vibrant Health and Conscious Awareness. Heather's focus is on women's groups and private sessions - The Yoga of Nurturance and Whole Body Coaching as well as Cancer prevention and healing. These are her great delight! We spoke about: Heather's recent oral surgery and how it was a huge lesson in pointing to what was holding back her speech. We spoke about the chakras and sacred geometry. The four words Heather put together; resistance, resentment, conflict and despair. We spoke about the conscious mind and how it's only 7% and the subconscious mind is all the rest. We talked about being sick being one of the ways that we actually involve people in our lives and how we need disease to feel the gift of life. Heather spoke eloquently about watching ourselves, the benefit of an everyday stomach massage and how we are beings of electricity. We discussed how love and light displaces anything unlike itself. Heather talked about her ability to see patterns in people and about how it's so important for all us not to judge anything. We talked about the balance of the female energies on the Earth and her respect for the medical profession. We discussed how death is also healing, we touched on addictions and how people need love to recover from them. We spoke about ‘laughter yoga' and the importance of laughter. Then we finished by reading out Heather's Top Tips for Optimal Health. Sponsor: Sponsor is Twin Flame Hosting: Consciously hosting your spiritual websites since 1993 (twinflamehosting.com). Astro Highlights is sponsored by HTTP://WWW.PURPLANTESSENTIALS.COM organic aromatherapy On today’s show KG talks about the upcoming Scorpio Full Moon and the 3 Eclipses looming on the horizon for us. The Scorpio full moon is at 26º Scorpio on Tuesday, May 17th at 4:09pm. As the moon goes void of course exactly at the time of the full moon you’ll want to do your full moon ritual just before the Full Moon to make the most of the celestial energies. The Scorpio full moon is the culmination of a 6 month cycle that began with the Scorpio New Moon back in November. Review the past six months and recognize and celebrate all that you’ve accomplished. If you set New Moon Intentions last November review them and note what you’ve accomplished and where you feel stuck, or in need of revision of your plans, and making course corrections. Look in your personal astrology chart to see where the Scorpio Full Moon is located to know which area of your life is reaching fulfilment, an area where rewards and recognition are set to blossom in your life. If this is an area of your life where you’re feeling stuck your full moon ritual may include releasing old patterns, and situations, people or things you’ve outgrown that are not working for you. For instance if the Scorpio Full Moon is in your 4th house of home, and family you may be celebrating the completion of some project in your home, or perhaps in your home business. The Scorpio Full Moon can dig deep into the shadows to reveal what needs regeneration and healing. The full moon shines its light into the darkness, illuminating and mining the depths of your psyche so that you can rise like the Phoenix above any obstacles in our life. KG ecommends performing a Ho’oponopono Forgiveness Ritual especially at each Full Moon, but especially at the time of a Scorpio Full Moon because of your heightened ability to contact the deeper strata of our psyche and unearth anything that needs forgiveness, release and letting go. ....Now Onto the Eclipses! Our first Solar Eclipse is at 11° Gemini on Wednesday, June 1st at 2:03pm PT A Solar Eclipse always occurs at the time of a New Moon. The best time for your Gemini New Moon meditation and setting your intentions is just before and at the new moon tide until the moon goes void of course on June 3rd at 1:08am PT. The Gemini Solar Eclipse is Trine the planet Saturn which signifies a culmination and new beginning in the areas of your life where these two (2) planets are located. Gemini is all about networking, connecting and communications of all kinds, and Saturn represents authority, form and structure. While stationed in the sign of Libra over the last couple of years Saturn has been changing the way you perceive and relate to others and how you communicate. Saturn has been helping you to restructure your relationships and communications systems in the area of your life where it is located so they work better for you and give you the necessary support you need to succeed in this area of your life. This includes establishing new, healthier boundaries with others. This Solar Eclipse Trine to the planet Saturn signals that all of your hard work of re-structuring, formulating, and giving form to something is about to pay off BIG time! Rewards for your hard work are forthcoming, especially after Saturn moves Direct on June 12th. A whole new world is likely to open up for you related to connecting and sharing with like minded others in the very near future! ....Two weeks later we have a Lunar Eclipse at 24° Sagittarius on Wednesday, June 15th 1:14pm PT The best time to do your full moon meditation is just before and at the full moon until the moon goes void of course at 8:31pm PT. The Sagittarius full moon lunar eclipse is an excellent time to focus on your deepest desires and needs for fulfilment! Sagittarius represents the higher mind, education, adventure, and expansion and the Lunar Eclipse represents BIG fulfilment, a dream come true, or at this time you could have some heavy duty burden lifted or baggage that gets released, or a huge ending of some sort that you are way past over due for gets released so you can move on. ....Two weeks later we have another Solar Eclipse at 9° Cancer on Friday, July 1st at 1:54am PT The best time for your New Moon meditation and setting your intentions is just before and at the new moon tide until the moon goes void of course at 4:37am PT. The Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse is powerful for setting your new moon intentions for your deepest emotional desires related to Nurturance and Support which includes establishing healthy boundaries for yourself. As you've now gone through 3 Eclipses representing waves of transformation that initiate far reaching change, which may have felt more like a series of tsunamis impacting your life in catastrophic, and life altering ways to some of you, you've been prepared to open the way to walk through new doors that are now presenting themselves to us. Life may suddenly seem radically different from a month to six weeks ago. You're in a much better place, no matter how things may appear, for making the most out of life's opportunities as we now enter the first orb of square between the planets Pluto and Uranus. The pressure between these two planets begins to build through June and into July when they come within 1º of an exact square to one another. KG will talk more about the square between Pluto and Uranus in an upcoming video. Please check out Health Mastery Ezine for more Astrology - Astro Highlights at HTTP://KGSTILES.COM
