Hey everyone, this episode gets personal. After an intense week of emotions, I'm inviting you to join me in exploring the power of pausing. Last week's election stirred up so much anger, grief, and reflection on what it means to live in a patriarchal world. I'm sharing how sometimes, the most radical act is simply to rest, feel, and give ourselves permission to be still. If you've been feeling the weight of it all, know you're not alone. Let's talk about why rest is resistance, and how honoring our grief can be a strength.

The crisis in mature masculinity is very much upon us. Men feel anxious, on the verge of feeling impotent, helpless, frustrated, unloved, unappreciated, and often ashamed of being masculine. Something vital is missing in the many lives of men. For students of mythology and Jungian psychology, there is hope. The external deficiencies we face—absent fathers, immature role models, a lack of meaningful rituals, and the scarcity of ritual elders—can be overcome if we look within ourselves, and turn towards the archetypes of the mature masculine within our unconscious. In King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine, Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette explore the difference between Boy psychology or the archetypes of immature masculinity and Man psychology or the archetypes of mature masculinity, as well as their shadow sides. “The more beautiful, competent, and creative we become, the more we seem to invite the hostility of our superiors, or even of our peers. What we are really being attacked by is the immaturity in human beings who are terrified of our advances on the road toward masculine or feminine fullness of being.”

I catch up again with Ben Jarvie a writer and kiwi Bitcoiner working for Amber App, a Bitcoin-only exchange. We talk about Ben's recent travels to El Salvador and Madeira, and we reflect on the declining situation of my beloved home country, New Zealand, and in particular the economic violence that the State and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand continues to unleash upon the people through its egregious manipulation of the money. In this episode, we engage in a deep and transformative conversation with Amir Khaligi, the visionary founder of Embodied Masculine. Amir's unique approach combines Jungian psychology, Somatics, and embodiment to guide men toward their truest selves, fostering purpose-driven lives. This episode delves into Amir's chrysalis moment during a journey to Mount Sinai, where he faced the unknown and found solace. He recounts how releasing attachments and confronting shadows led him to realign with his purpose. The conversation explores the significance of transitions as rites of passage and emphasizes the power of shadow work and the integration of masculine and feminine energies for holistic growth. Amir's initiation program for men is a central focus, offering a four-month transformative journey that helps men bridge the gap between boyhood and mature masculinity. Listeners gain insights into Amir's guidance on embracing both masculine and feminine aspects and the pivotal role of the body in connecting with the divine. Tune in to this enlightening episode as Amir and Chelsae dive into the nuances of true transformation, the journey from darkness to purpose, and the powerful wisdom that emerges from deep within. I talk with Dash of the Tokyo Citadel Builders Podcast & Community. We dive deep into some of the game theory and scenarios that Bitcoin and hyperbitcoinisation presents, as well as what the broader economic landscape may look like in the future. Just as the internet has become far more than merely digital version of letters and newspapers, Bitcoin may not just be digital money as we know it, but an entirely new paradigm of value transfer and wealth storage that is difficult to fathom while we still exist within the current system. Thus it is important to broach these ideas and have creative discussions to try and paint a picture of what may come to pass. I also talk with Dash about the role of faith, and purpose and meaning more broadly in these trying and changing times. This week, Sam reunites with Samuel Shin to chat about how people-pleasing shows up specifically for Asian men, and the importance of men tending to old wounds and connecting to their inner worlds. Samuel discusses his methods and techniques for helping Asian men heal, get in touch with their authentic selves, and regain their agency. He shares his thoughts on how masculinity and toxic masculinity have become conflated in the discourse of today, and how he aims to help redefine and reclaim what it means to have healthy masculinity.Samuel (he/him) is a licensed therapist, certified men's coach and 2nd generation Korean-American. His education & training was in humanistic-existential, psychodynamic and transpersonal psychologies. However, he left the therapy field in 2018 to become a transformational coach where he has been focusing his work on Asian mental health specifically with Asian men. Samuel works 1:1 with Asian men in his coaching practice, but also runs Asian men's groups and will be running the first-ever Asian men's retreat in early 2024! I talk with Bitkiwi Paul about the next Bitkiwi meetup that is happening on Saturday October 28th in Auckland. We also discuss the social layer of Bitcoin in New Zealand and how it has grown enormously over the last 12 months. This time last year I didn't really know any Bitcoiners in person, but here we are with a thriving community of Bitcoin projects, businesses, and collaborations that I am involved in, and I know there are many others out there doing the same. A lot of Proof of Work has gone into building on Bitcoin over the last few years and that is going to be important as more and more people start finding and learning about Bitcoin. Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 571 Are you aware of the archetypes that are stopping you from reaching your full potential? Greg Schmaus, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom podcast, episode 571, to share how core archetypes represent your relationship with your own power, why you should heal your inner child, and what it takes to break generational patterns and become at peace with your life. "Ego is a collection of archetypes that protect the safety and security of your inner child. Life has a target on your core wounds because the universe knows that until you heal those core wounds, you're always going to be brought back down to that level of development. You're going to attract situations in life that are going to give you an opportunity to heal core wounds that you experienced as a child." - Greg Schmaus Collective Wounds "A lot of times we have this illusion that if we keep revisiting things or the same things keep coming up, it means we haven't healed that in ourselves. Which maybe that's true but I think there's a possibility that that's not true. A lot of the things that we're healing within ourselves are not actually ours personally. They're collective patterns that we're voluntarily working through as a way of transmuting that energy out of the collective." - Greg Schmaus Intuition = Relationship with God "Your relationship with God directly connects to your relationship with your intuition. Your intuition is an expression of the higher self that's guiding you towards your potential which a lot of times goes against what feels safe and familiar. If you're still in your survival archetype, always needing to go to self-preservation, you're going to override intuition to always go into that self-preservation because the two are in conflict. Once you heal these survival archetypes, you're in a different relationship with truth. And when you're in a different relationship with truth, now it can come in without as much interference from all of these survival parts telling you why it is not a good idea." - Greg Schmaus Your Power Is Your Energy "Where you give your power away is where you give your energy away. Who am I in my highest version? And which parts of myself do I need to integrate in order to become the man that can be of full service to this world? I'm pondering these questions a lot lately. A framework that I find very helpful for this are the archetypes of the mature masculine / feminine. They can prevent us from doing more of what comes easy to us and actually focus on our blind spots and weaknesses. The parts of ourselves that we prefer not looking at. And as a result we become one-dimensional human beings that are far away from being able to bring our full gifts into this world. Enjoy this very personal contemplation of where I'm in my individual journey right now. May this inspire you to dive deeper into yourself as well. What is this? Anne Bland gets curious about what is a "modern man." What does it look like to be a man in his power as a leader in society and in relationships sexually as well? What does it mean to be a conscious, spiritually awakened, and very sexy man? Anne invites Mikey Brackett to discuss what the "modern man" looks like and why the "Warrior archetype" can be, from the Jungian Psychology point of view, harmful to men and their loved ones. The Warrior is part of four main masculine archetypes. The other three are the King, The Magician, and the Lover. The Warrior can become overly protective and dominating when it is compensating the fear of not being enough which is the core wound most men have. Once these archetypes are integrated fully into a man's psyche, on his spiritual quest he can embody each one of them in a way that brings hope, celebration, curiosity and openness, love and connection to the relationships and to the world. The book Mikey mentions is "King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine" by Robert Moore. www.mikeybrackett.com ---Download a FREE Pleasure Guide "Pleasure is Your Birthright - 7 Holistic Sex Tools": https://www.selfishlyhappyyou.com/pleasure-is-your-birthright-ebook Join the waiting list for the Pleasure Quest: https://www.selfishlyhappyyou.com/pleasure-quest Podcast website: https://www.selfishlyhappyyou.com/podcast Email: annebland@selfishlyhappyyou.com Book a free coaching discovery call: https://calendly.com/annebland/free-call Send a voice message: https://www.speakpipe.com/SelfishlyHappy Support the show: https://selfishlyhappyyou.com/buy-me-a-coffee

Every Thursday I release a solocast, where I share my mental musings, my pontifications, and my passions about something inside of our wellness pentagon, the mental physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial ways of being, tools, and resources that can actually help us move the needle on the ground here with us in the 3-D planet earth. There's a lot of content on the Internet and here on Spotify and Apple that really commoditizes spirituality, but it is my promise to deliver to you today zero appropriation or commoditization and 100% value when it comes to how to identify if you yourself or someone in your life is in need of a rite of passage, what the significance in the meaning of a rite of passage is for both men and women, and lastly, what your ancestors are trying to tell you sometimes with a whisper, and sometimes with a sledgehammer in the stages of your life. [02:18] Traditional Rite Of Passage So let's begin. What exactly is a rite of passage and why is it important for you to know? “The critical problems of becoming male and female, relations within the family, and passing into old age, are directly related to the devices which the society offers the individual to help him achieve the new adjustment.” - Arnold Van Gennep, The Rites of Passage, 1908. Throughout human history, rites of passage have functioned as a tool of maturation for individual renewal and cultural cohesion. To contrast, it is the modernity of western society that provides little to no structure whatsoever for transitioning from one life phase to the next. As a result, without access to solid rituals, young people are desolate, lost, and confused about how to move in a conscious and confident way into the responsibility of being an adult. A right of passage is characterized by three distinct phases that follow Joseph Campbell is hero's journey. The first is separation, where you leave the familiar the next is transition or initiation, which is a time of testing learning and uncomfortable growth, and lastly, the return, which is the incorporation and integration of lessons learned to share with family, friends, and community. Traditionally, a rite of passage is a ritual event that marks a human's transition between childhood and adulthood connection to themselves and to a tribe or social group. A few examples of a right of passage could be an African lion hunt, the ancient Spartans, as seen in the film 300, land diving, which is done by the tribes in the Pacific islands, as well as a bullet ant glove of Brazil, where the Amazonian tribes perform an initiation ritual, forcing young men to place their hands into gloves, filled with hundreds and hundreds of bullet ants for 20 times more pain than being stung by a wasp. Another example could be taking a daughter or son to kill their first animal in a sacred way like a deer elk or moose hunt. And lastly, there is in my opinion, nothing more powerful for us here in the United States than a Vision Quest that is inspired by Native American traditions. Which is 10 days long with 3 days upfront of ego shedding, and intention setting, followed by 100+ hours of fasting completely alone in nature with zero distractions, that's right – no Food no Fire no tent no phone no electronics no writing absolutely nothing besides, you, water, and your breath and thoughts. [05:55] Women's Right Of Passage So now that we have explored the different aspects and definitions of a right of passage, let's talk about how this right of passage applies to women as well. Obviously, there is the beginning of menstruation or in the Mexican culture, they have the Quinceanera, the celebration of a girl's 15th birthday, marking her passage from girlhood to womanhood. But how often do mothers give that to daughters in the western Caucasian culture? Across the world, the feminine traditions of separation, initiation, and return, have been replaced with magazines and social media, and the comparison of young girls' bodies to movie stars. Our traditions and rituals for women have been replaced with comparison and shame by the mass media, so that women can be monetized and shamed about the way their body looks or if they actually want to be a mother. You'll definitely want to check out JoshTrent.com/494 for our episode with Sal Di Stefano from Mind Pump for a deeper dive into this exact topic. [07:38] Are You In Need Of A Rite Of Passage? So, how to identify if you yourself, or someone in your life is in need of a rite of passage? Here are the behaviors to look out for in young men, and unfortunately, even older men who themselves were never taught by their fathers or tribe how to go through a heroes journey of rite of passage: They exhibit a "high chair tyrant" archetype, where nothing could be delivered to them, fast enough, or get enough. You'll know these people when they hide behind a cloak of perfection, and their demands on others are articulated with intensity and anger. Next is that they seem lost in their career or purpose, easily switching from one thing to the next, and never staying still for too long. Their lives are filled with instant gratification, and as soon as things get challenging, they quit or turn the cheek the other way. They have no sense of honor for themselves, they suffer from low self-worth or even self-hatred. They long for positive male figure role models, or female, figure role models, and they project their mother or father wounding onto these role models, unconsciously. Lastly, a symptom of a human being in need of a right of passage is a deep well of hurt in their soul, and the longing for connection to a higher power, to the creator. [09:59] Native Americans And Their Right Of Passage Traditions Now that you know the symptoms and the definition in regards to the right of passage, what is the solution, how does a human being take action, and place themself in the fire for a coming-of-age tradition otherwise known as a right of passage? Well, first, you must listen to what your ancestors are trying to tell you. For thousands of years, our ancestors have left written, artistic, and even in the past hundreds of years, music and recorded voices that all point towards the clues of how to live life well. But living life well when you are a child, it's different than living life well, when you are an adolescent, teenager, young adult, adult, middle age, elder, and senior. All of these life phases have unique and potent lessons of growth and wisdom if a human being is following the map of how to absorb integrate, and embody the wisdom that our ancestors are sharing with us. Across the world, there are many many clues that our ancestors have given us, but just for simplicity's sake, I will focus on the wisdom of the Native American elders, as an example of what our ancestors are trying to tell us... As I mentioned before a vision quest is a right of passage in some Native American cultures. It is typically only done by young males entering adulthood, but we have seen a resurgence because of the atrophy of young women's traditions around entering womanhood, there are many women who embark on Vision Quest as well. Here are the clues, the lessons, and what our ancestors are, trying to tell us spoken through the four Native American values Harmony with nature, the endurance of suffering, respect and non-interference towards others, and a strong belief that man is inherently good and should be respected for his decisions. Native American values lean toward a cosmic identity, a harmony of the individual with the tribe, the tribe with the land, and the land with the spirit of the universe. Central to this quest for harmony is a sense of constancy – the timelessness and predictability of nature as the foundation of existence. This cycle symbolizes eternity- one reality, and it transcends everything in its absoluteness, giving respect to everything. So these whispers, and sometimes the sledgehammers that come, not just from the Native American values, but also from the European, and basically in every continent of the world, the values of our ancestors are always around us if we can be still enough to hear them. Here are some signs that it is time for you, yourself, or someone you know to embark upon a rite of passage, whether they are 13, 15, 55, or 65 there is never a wrong time to embark upon a right of passage. If you cannot remember the last time, you spent time by yourself, or time by yourself in nature, and even the thought of you, being in nature, makes you feel uncomfortable, or brings up fear, it is time for your rite of passage. When you hear the word family, you get uncomfortable or you have a view of what a family actually is, or when you do your emotional inventory process if the sound of the word family makes you angry or sad, it is time to do a rite of passage. If you only are working for retirement, and the thought of working for a purpose is completely foreign to you, it is time to do it right of passage. If you are a hard follower of rules, and you never push your edge, and always be a good little boy, or a good little girl, if you have no idea about the thrill of breaking rules, or the thought of breaking rules, or even questioning authority, scares you, it is time to embark upon a right of passage. And lastly, if you are focused on the youth and you compare yourself to how life was 10, 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago if you find yourself melancholy and dwelling on the past on a regular basis, and you were unhappy with your present moment and you just can't seem to snap yourself out of depression, or anxiety, it is absolutely 100% time to embark upon a right of passage. Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. There are two parts of the mind: the conscious and the unconscious. While the former dominates your attention, the latter actually occupies far more of the brain, influencing your mood, generating inspiration, and making you who you are, all behind the scenes. My guest would argue that to become all you're meant to be, you have to make your unconscious mind your ally and that this may be life's most important task. His name is Daniel Z. Lieberman, and he's a psychiatrist and the author of Spellbound: Modern Science, Ancient Magic, and the Hidden Potential of the Unconscious Mind. Today on the show, Daniel first offers an overview of the nature, function, and study of the unconscious. From there we discuss Carl Jung's perspective on the unconscious, and his ideas around its archetypes and shadows. We then get into the way that things which are connected to magic and the supernatural, like fairy tales and tarot cards, can be seen as manifestations of the energy of the unconscious and as age-old attempts to confront and understand it. We end our discussion by talking about the quest for individuation, which requires bringing together the conscious and unconscious minds, and how to go about tapping into the power of the unconscious to become a kind of magician yourself.Resources Related to the EpisodeDaniel's previous appearance on the show: Episode #429 — Taking Control of the Brain Chemical That Drives Excitement, Motivation, and MoreKing, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine by Robert Moore and Douglas GilletteAoM's series on the king, warrior, magician, and lover archetypes AoM Podcast #598: Journeying From the First to the Second Half of LifeAoM Podcast #335: Exploring Archetypes With Jordan B. In this week's episode we talked to Garrett Hooper LMFT about men's mental health and why he think's it's taken so long illicit a societal response. Men make up the majority of death by suicide cases in the United States and yet there is not much conversation about it. The stigma and shame felt by many men around accessing or seeking out mental health continues to be a huge problem. Conversations like these will hopefully illuminate the versatile and beauty of different methods available to men all around the country. We briefly discuss gender, privilege, race, and the revenge on men experienced through social media and the like. If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, please share this episode or any of the resources below. It only takes one person to care and get curious to make a huge impact in someone's life. “My big takeaway is that planning and hustling and that whole hustle culture and pivoting and you know, just cheat sheets and get my hacks and let's just work harder? That's, to me, that's all in the rearview mirror.” In this episode we speak with Tim Ash. Among many accomplishments, he's a bestselling author and international keynote speaker on evolutionary psychology and digital marketing. He's considered one of the founding fathers of the discipline of website conversion rate optimization (CRO). He's worked with companies like Google, American Express, Nestle, and Verizon to name a few. He's been ranked a “top 10 online marketing expert” by Forbes magazine, and “top 15 online marketing Influencer to Watch by Entrepreneur magazine, His book “Unleash Your Primal Brain: Demystifying How We Think And Why We Act” has been endorsed by renowned psychologist Dr. Robert Cialdini. But after all of his great achievements, his conclusion is the brutal honesty that the journey will end, and the journey is just that - a journey. It's fascinating to hear a person so released from cultural norms and evaluations - on a quest to be a professional - human being. This episode is very different, you'll hear for yourself. Podcast Magazine Power Quotes From The Show Witnessing Radical Body Vitality Through Fasting "As you are able to improve the vitality of the body with a tool like fasting, you're going to be happier, process information better, and there will be parts of your brain that will be able to communicate with each other better and you'll be able to make sense of things. You'll be able to have a more powerful divine connection. Everything will work better and when we first start out on this journey, getting the vitality of the body is super important, especially for the brain and nervous system for radical health transformation." - Dr. John Lieurance Unpacking Fear vs Anxiety "I notice that so many people use the words, 'fear' and 'anxiety' often interchangeably and when I first became sober, I used to just be so consumed with fear. However, as I started to unpack it, I realized that fear is when a wolf walks through the door and your life is in danger; a totally natural, healthy response is to be in fear and get away in that moment. Anxiety is if you're sitting here and there's no wolf on the property and you're obsessively thinking about what would happen if a wolf walked through the door right now. Fear is, in its truest sense for me, something that is immediate and righteous but anxiety is imaginary and always future-based that has no basis in reality. So, how can we uproot that anxiety and have greater open awareness that keeps us grounded in this present moment?" - Luke Storey The Wounded Healer's Magic "The magic really happens when you take yourself out of victimhood and take ownership of your life. When we play the victim, we're just at the world's mercy and totally powerless. Opposite of that, when you transform into the wounded healer, you are the one that carries the real medicine that you get to share with others." - Cal Callahan Botanic Tonics | Feel Free Save 40% on your Botanic Tonics Feel Free order with the code WELLNESS40 at wellnessforce.com/FeelFree A feel good wellness tonic of ancient plants from the South Pacificand Southeast Asia where they've been used socially and in wellness for centuries. I had a blast during this conversation! Abby and Ciara, from I Am Alliance, are full of knowledge and have a beautifully grounded way of sharing it. Today we are talking about Masculine and Feminine Archetypes. I had heard the term Archetype a lot when I first started on my healing path, but never know how it fit in with me until I started doing shadow work. In my journey to find out more about this, I was brought to these 2 lovely humans. I hope you enjoy the conversation. ~Obeisance~ Connect with I Am Alliance Instagram I @IAMAlliance Instagram - Ciara I @Ciaras.Vibe Instagram - Abby I @AuthenticAbbs Website I IAMAlliance.me References Book I Love Yourself Like Your Like Depends On It by Kamal Ravikant Book I King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine by Robert Moore & Douglas Gillette Book I How to Do the Work by Dr. Nicole LePera Connect with Adam Riehl Website I AdamRiehlHealing.com Facebook I facebook.com/adamriehlhealing Instagram I @adamriehlhealing Youtube I youtube.com/user/adamriehl/videos Email I adamriehl1@gmail.com Another Podcast by Adam Riehl I Zen and Not Zen Adam Yoga & Sound Baths I beoneyogastudio.com I blissyogastudios.org Subscribe and Share Anchor Breaker Google Podcasts Apple Podcasts Pocket Casts RadioPublic Spotify --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adam-riehl7/support

When that day is over, it's like a metaphorical death. You're done with that day but you could be done with your life so go be happy. The only way to know that you had a life well lived is to commit to your evolution and to do the best you can every day. The more nuanced you become with your practice, it becomes every minute and then every second. Then it becomes every moment to moment... ...You become so present and so aware that every thought and emotion that comes up, every experience you have, every interaction you have is an opportunity ask, 'How can I use this moment to evolve and serve?' so that it becomes part of your everyday awareness and perpetual flow state." - Mark Divine The Five Mountains of Wellness "Wellness is a journey, not a destination. It is easy for people to fall off of the path when they hit those major obstacles and this is when the other mountains, Spiritual and Intuitional, come into play with the Physical, Mental, and Emotional. Acknowledge what is blocking you, lean into it but don't stop your other training. Keep going to the gym, journaling, eating healthy, and doing your box breathing practice. If you fall off your rituals, just get back on and continue the work." - Mark Divine The Training of Unbeatable Mind "The training of Unbeatable Mind is really powerful because when we train ourselves physically, mentally, and emotionally, what we're doing is working to connect and integrate all those physical aspects of the mind: the brain-brain, the heart-brain, the belly-brain, and the body-brain. Then we're also working simultaneously to expand our perceptions so that we begin to experience the mind independent of the body as well. Those are the first 3 of the 5 Mountains." - Mark Divine Links From Today's Show 086 Creating The Unbeatable Mind With Mark Divine Sealfit Unbeatable Mind Mark Divine's Books Unbeatable Mind Podcast with Mark Divine Mark Divine Instagram | Morning Rituals, Courage, Facing Fears, Witnessing and Relationships A DEEPER WHY Josh Trent's Journey Thru SEALFIT 20X-12 Hr. What they don't expect is the thoughtful, yoga-innovating, joking and laughing, professor of leadership named Mark Divine. At twenty-six he graduated as Honor Man (#1-ranked trainee) of SEAL BUD/S class number 170. Mark served for nine years total on active duty and eleven as a Reserve SEAL, retiring as Commander in 2011. His leadership of teams was so effective the government tasked him with creating a nationwide mentoring program for SEAL trainees. Not only did it increase the quality of SEAL candidates, it reduced BUD/S attrition rate up to five percent. A New Kind of Fitness Company What made Mark's program so effective was his focus on more than just physical fitness. He'd seen laughter conquer fatigue and bond teams at their BUD/S breaking point, intuition save his men during the hell of war and special ops missions. He knew he could form a fitness company that prepared civilians for the physical AND mental/emotional demands of Navy SEAL-like lifestyle. So he started SEALFIT. Entrepreneur, Professor, and Unbeatable Mind At the same time SEALFIT was beginning he co-founded Coronado Brewing Company, built www.NavySEALs.com, the leading website for SEAL gear and information, and launched US Tactical, a government contracting business. He also served as adjunct professor of leadership at the University of San Diego before the Navy called him up for duty in the Iraq War. Through Mark's teaching, entrepreneurial endeavors and travel to foreign countries, he noticed the power of mental toughness, emotional resilience, intuitive leadership and a healthy spirit for anyone wanting breakthrough performance. They weren't solely for combat or restricted to the business world or one culture. He'd watch them transform lives in people from every background, nation and belief system. So he wrote and self-published his first book, Unbeatable Mind, in 2011 and launched its at-home study program. More Writing and a Continuing Journey Three more books poured out in a torrent… The Way of the SEAL, published by Reader's Digest, and 8 Weeks to SEALFIT and KOKORO Yoga, both published by St. Martin's Press. Writing his experience for others triggered a realization of his own full-circle journey… Grown up in upstate New York, a degree in economics and an MBA from NYU. He'd prepared for life as a high powered CPA… and then left his high paying finance career for the adventurous life of a Navy SEAL officer. Now he's once again sought after by those same corporations and institutions, as a trainer of the mental toughness and the whole person training that shaped, and healed him. Mark lives with his family in Encinitas, California, where he continues to train, explore, learn from others and generate more resources to improve the lives of everyone he meets. Build Immunity. Using his experiences, David offered some helpful ways to picture liminality, describing it as an “invitation” and “adventure.” David also shared the importance of people and guides along the journey, including the helpful “breadcrumbs” we find along the way. We engaged in an extensive conversation about the changing nature of the workplace and the importance of spirituality and “conscious leadership.” David was a wonderful guest, full of stories and helpful analogies. He also suggested many wonderful resources for understanding liminality, spirituality, and the workplace. I've listed the authors and books he mentioned below. I absolutely loved talking with David, and I'm sure it's a conversation you will love too! Exploring why you cannot have true power or brotherhood from a place of violence and war; only from a place of peace. How these groups with dogmatic, controlling leaders begin to grow an infection of resentment within and it begins to unravel the brotherhood. The fact that the old school patriarchy was infected and has operated from that space for a millennia but we're now witnessing this positive shift away from that mentality. Why it's foolish to think that evil does not exist because in the world there are fear and love, chaos and order, dark and night...there are always opposing forces because all is God. Paul Chek | All Is God [12:30] Authoritative Playfulness Why it's not real to believe in "good vibes only" but what is real is to have "authoritative playfulness." Breaking down what authoritative playfulness is and why it's what modern men need to cultivate. How authoritative playfulness gives men the skills to take care of themselves and their family against evil. The deep ego wounds we still carry with us from people being mistreated for thousands of years: greed, resentment, and betrayal. Why we have square thinking when we need to think in a circular way to live in our 360 world. Exploring why men are afraid of this new way of being in their masculine selves. The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell Unpacking the 'tipping point' we all face when we have experienced a way of being that is creating pain. How to show up as a better man by following the three phases of intelligence: gather, apply, and embody. Why the biggest gift we can give to ourselves, our partner, and our space is asking for permission to learn so that we can become a better leader. How you can become a better leader for your team by asking members to help you understand any stress they're feeling if the energy is off at work. [30:00] How Men Can Build Greater Emotional Intelligence Why true intelligence goes beyond just how smart you are or how you speak. How we can all gain greater emotional intelligence by taking very complex things, dropping into our heart, and speak with honest language. How Josh's M21 Guide with six practices will help you on your path to embody greater emotional and physical intelligence. What people can look forward to in starting a breathwork practice and the science behind how it helps shift the brain's chemistry. How you can get out of the sympathetic mode: hugging, nature, exercise, or conscious relationships but the no. 1 is the pulse of the breath. Why we become victims of intellectualization where we think that life has to be this crazy, hard complex obstacle but it's all programming. What if money was no object? by Alan Watts The power of being aware of what "masks" you are still wearing in your everyday life instead of showing up as your authentic self. It's so hard because we are fighting biology. Steven Pressfield calls it 'the resistance.' So, what is resistance's number one job? What is a holodyne's number one job? What is a core belief that got installed almost like a microchip in a computer; what is its core job? Its core job is to function without change. So, when I am presented with new information that goes against the construct of the programs that were installed in my mind that activate the holodynes and the beliefs and the way of being, there is going to be a system error, right? That is when your soul has to come in, see things from an observer perspective, and override the programming." - Josh Trent The Tipping Point We Face Every Day "We all have a tipping point that comes when we have experienced a way of being that is creating pain. We change through pleasure and pain; it's an axis and the reason that dark comes really strong right before light is because every day we're in a tipping point. Every single day you and I as men can choose to show up as authoritative playful leaders based on our environment and what we're aware of happening in it. How can you do this? First you have to choose that you want to be aware of what is actually going on in reality; not the subjective reality but the objective reality that you can see from 30,000 feet. After that, ask yourself, 'What is my decision making faculty about how I'm going to adapt and serve in that awareness?' " - Josh Trent What It Means To Be An Authoritative Playful Man "Authoritative Playfulness is what men need to cultivate because if we can be authoritative and playful, that can be trusted. Authoritative means you take care of your body, you take care of your mental health; maybe you learn how to use firearms properly to protect you and your family, maybe you learn how to grow food. Maybe you learn all kinds of skills that can protect from a place of peace and love against evil because evil is real just like love is real. Evil is real because we are still at the consciousness level where we are still carrying out the wishes of evil and those come from greed, resentment, and betrayal which are all ego wounding.... ...They are still these deep, bloody ego wounds that we are uncovering from thousands of years of people being mistreated and honestly trying to be led from dogmatism. So, we get to be authoritative and we get to be playful because we have to have fun and we have to be loving. That's the art form of being authoritative playful and that's what us men have to embody today." I first experienced the actor Adrian Grenier, like many of us did, as the charismatic boy prince Vincent Chase on the show Entourage. We met in person at a masculinity talk at Burning Man as a man going through a profound spiritual journey, which is the subject of today’s podcast. On the show we look at Adrian’s life through an archetypal lens from the puer aeternus (the boy who won’t grow up) to the four mature masculine archetypes outlined in the book King, Warrior, Magician, Lover. We discuss his time on the set of Entourage and how life imitates art. Adrian explains his own trail of ashes, the portal to growing up, and some of the specific tools, like embodiment, that Adrian used to catalyze his growth. Finally we discuss his new community project outside of Austin, Texas named Kintsugi after the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with gold. Adrian is an actor, director, producer, musician, environmentalist and now, a rancher. He is best known for his starring role in the HBO series Entourage and has appeared in films such as Drive Me Crazy and The Devil Wears Prada. He serves as a United Nations Environment Goodwill Ambassador. A Note: Discussions of gender are incredibly nuanced, especially now. There is no one size fits all way of looking at gender polarities in ourselves and our culture. Neither Adrian or I are gender theorists and so we endeavor to share our own experiences. Whether you identify as a man or woman or any other beautiful constellation of gender identity, I hope you find something in today’s episode that gives you greater insight in how to expand the width of your own being. On this podcast I interviewed my good friend Kyle Kingsbury. Kyle is a former professional fighter and worked as the Director of Human optimization at Onnit with Aubrey Marcus for several years. Now he's focused on running the Kyle Kingsbury Podcast, on which he connects with some of the greatest minds from around the globe via interviews. I met Kyle a few years ago when I went to Onnit to do a podcast about the health effects of sunlight. Kyle has such a positive and strong energy that is so infectious and although he is 6 foot 3 inches and probably 250 pounds or more, he is the gentlest giant I have ever met! He has tremendous power as a being and is using it in the quest of good. In this episode, Kyle and I began by discussing technocracy and many of the things that are going wrong in our world today, as well as, what the real risk for people is, which unfortunately many may overlook. We discuss how all of the little freedoms that we are allowing to be taken away could end up accumulating to be so much more. We talk about what Kyle has learned on his journey and what any individual can do to take responsibility for their own life to both, be the best that they can be, and be of the greatest service to our world and all that is good. Kyle also recommends a tremendous amount of resources for those interested in understanding the darkness occurring in our world today, as well as what we can do to elevate and free ourselves. These are listed below. Enjoy listening! “The light side of power is that you use your power to empower others. The dark side of power is you use your power at the expense of others." - Kyle Kingsbury About Kyle Kingsbury: Kyle always enjoyed fighting and he says it gave him the winner's mentality of really taking his body seriously, knowing that every inch of the recovery he could get was important. As he learns to become a better version of himself everyday, Kyle states unmatched words of wisdom for anyone tuning in to this episode! Elliott Hulse is a name synonymous with success, and YouTube. He created content for almost 4 years, before really making it big on YouTube. Long before he was an internet personality, he was the owner of Strength Camp Gym. His only purpose in creating video content, was to promote and sell memberships to his gym. On a dare from a friend, Elliott turned ads on his YouTube channel, and created an income of $10,000 in his first month. From there, he pushed down the gas, and went from making a video when he felt like, to one everyday. Elliott structured his videos in question and answer format, and made it his mission to answer questions in the most creative way he could find; a true artist. More than being just a YouTube video creator, Elliott is a true student of philosophy; putting what he reads into action. He then forwards that information to his viewers, creating true inspiration in a metaphorical verse. Elliott is also the author of the Best-Seller, "The King," about helping others channel their inner king. Rather than just give more of the motivation for which he is famous, he wanted to give people a roadmap to really achieving their dreams. If you can't tell funny stories about embarrassing mistakes you've made, you're not taking enough chances. Are you letting the fear of failure turn you into a narrow guardian of the status quo? Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment. I met a woman when I was a boy – I promise I'm not making this up – who had the power to change the future. She taught me how to do it, too.Shall I teach you? The past was written by the choices of yesterday. The future is written by the choices you make today. The key is to do things that matter. You spent your day yesterday. You invested your time. But did you make a difference? Did you bring anyone joy? Did you matter? Or did you play it safe because you were worried that you might make a mistake? I'm not suggesting that you try something new all the time, just 5% of the time. The time to try something new is when: 1. you feel itchy that there's room for improvement, 2. you've counted the cost, 3. you can afford to fail. That's when you should take a chance. Follow your instinct. Few things turn out as well as we had hoped or as badly as we had feared. You learn a little from small mistakes. You learn a lot from big ones. You learn nothing at all from mediocrity. Failure is never a waste of time. Mediocrity always is. The fear of failure is what keeps you average. Success is the result of taking chances. America is plagued by mediocre primary schools, subpar infrastructure, and dysfunctional government. But somehow, this country manages to get at least one big, important thing right: innovation. That's the deep magic of the world's leading economy.”– James Pethokoukis, May 9, 2014Innovation occurs when you take a chance that you might be wrong. We want to encourage greatness in men. We want to encourage ambition. We believe that nobody wants to be sort of gray-normal. Often, the definition of normal is ‘average.' We live, it seems to us, in an age under the curse of normalcy, characterized by the elevation of the mediocre.”– Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette, King, Warrior, Magician, Lover: Rediscovering the Archetypes of the Mature Masculine“When you worry about what ‘might' happen, you're living in the shattered wreckage of your future.”– Teresa ShapiroPennie and I will spend April in Paris with the woman who taught me how to change the future. She married my father before I was born. Roy H. Williams
