Introducing Freddy Manduca. He founded Newfoundland, one of the UK's leading providers of diagnostic tests and medical devices, on a mission to make self-testing accessible across a myriad of health concerns. What started as a desperate race to provide the UK with enough Covid tests has pivoted into a business predicated on the idea of convenient and affordable self diagnosis for the people. This enables people to skip lengthy wait times with overcrowded and under-resourced NHS but also not pay the often extortionate amounts with private doctors - filling a valuable middle ground. Through Newfoundland, people can now put their health in their own hands without having to pay the premium. It means you can test yourself for things like HIV, UTIs, menopause and prostate health through to things like thyroid, bowel health, kidney health as well as iron and vitamin deficiencies. Not only does this negate some potentially awkward conversations at the clinics but with rapid self-test technology you can find out in minutes not days - sparing you any angst. With telehealth brands like Thriva, Hertility, Hims, Supply Life all on the rise, we are entering a new era of healthcare, where we can keep track of our health without relying primarily on a doctor. However, while many of these brands charge you £100 for the privilege, Newfoundland are democratising tests for a tenth of the price. In this episode we talk about the crazy War Dogs adventure that led to them supplying 91 million Covid-19 lateral flow tests, the underworld behind covid events and where healthcare trends are taking us. Listen in.

L., Brunton, B. W. Abstract: Flight control requires active sensory feedback, and insects have many sensors that help them estimate their current locomotor state, including campaniform sensilla, which are mechanoreceptors that sense strain resulting from deformation of the cuticle. Campaniform sensilla on the wing detect bending and torsional forces encountered during flight, providing input to the flight feedback control system. During flight, wings experience complex spatio-temporal strain patterns. Because campaniform sensilla detect only local strain, their placement on the wing is presumably critical for determining the overall representation of wing deformation; however, how these sensilla are distributed across wings is largely unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis that campaniform sensilla are found in stereotyped locations across individuals of Manduca sexta, a hawkmoth. We found that although campaniform sensilla are consistently found on the same veins or in the same regions of the wings, their total number and distribution can vary extensively. This suggests that there is some robustness to variation in sensory feedback in the insect flight control system. The regions where campaniform sensilla are consistently found provide clues to their functional roles, although some patterns might be reflective of developmental processes. Collectively, our results on intraspecific variation in campaniform sensilla placement on insect wings will help reshape our thinking on the utility of mechanosensory feedback for insect flight control and guide further experimental and comparative studies. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.14.536854v1?rss=1 Authors: Angjelichinoski, M., Wu, S., Putney, J., Sponberg, S., Tarokh, V. Abstract: Subject-to-subject variability is a common challenge both generalizing models of neural data across subjects, discriminating subject-specific and inter-subject features in large neural datasets, and engineering neural interfaces with subject-specific tuning. We study the problem of the cross-subject mapping of neural activity. The objective is to obtain a task-specific representation of the source subject signal into the feature space of the destination subject. We propose to use the Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) with Gaussian inputs and Bernoulli hidden units; once trained over the entire set of subjects, the RBM allows the mapping of source features on destination feature spaces using Gibbs sampling. We also consider a novel computationally efficient training technique for RBMs based on the minimization of the Fisher divergence, which allows the gradients of the RBM to be computed in closed form. We use neural decoding as a downstream application to test the method. Specifically, we test decoding on neuromuscular recordings of spike trains from the ten muscles that primarily control wing motion in an agile flying hawk moth, Manduca sexta. The dataset consists of this comprehensive motor program recorded from nine subjects, each driven by six discrete visual stimuli. The evaluations show that the source features can be decoded using the destination classifier with an accuracy of up to 95% when mapped using an RBM trained by Fisher divergence, showcasing the promising potential of the RBMs for cross-subject mapping applications. Wie lange DARF ich mein Kind tragen? Wie lange KANN ich mein Kind überhaupt tragen? Diese Frage wird uns so häufig gestellt, dass wir uns heute dazu ganz klar positionieren wollen.
The photos are mine of the Mirabilis longiflora flowers and Manduca sexta, the Carolina sphinx moth and tobacco hornworm. Note the seven streamline white stripes and the red horn on the tobacco hornworm. The adult moth, has some pretty cool markings as well. We don’t find many tomato hornworms (M. quinquemaculata) in our garden, the tobacco hornworm being the predominant glutton. Maybe the Carolina sphinx moth (M. sexta) hits the long flower four o’clock found around our home in between visits to Datura? OR more likely the 5 spotted hawkmoth leaves the research scientists in the nearby hills and hangs out at the Mesquitey homestead. Thanks to friends Janine McCabe and JenJen Zen, who whether they know it or not…now they do…were part of this moth journey.

We don't find the tomato hornworms (M. quinquemaculata) in our garden, so I guessing that it’s the Carolina sphinx moth (M. sexta) that visits the long flowered 4 o'clock at our home, not knowing about its exclusivity, and shoot, it may even share with the white lined sphinx moth (Hyles lineata). Whaaaa? And hey, maybe the 5 spotted hawkmoth only hangs out in the nearby hills with research scientists. Fine!
