Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.06.26.546554v1?rss=1 Authors: Stanchak, K. E., Deora, T., Weber, A. I., Hickner, M. K., Moalin, A., Abdalla, L., Daniel, T. L., Brunton, B. W. Abstract: Flight control requires active sensory feedback, and insects have many sensors that help them estimate their current locomotor state, including campaniform sensilla, which are mechanoreceptors that sense strain resulting from deformation of the cuticle. Campaniform sensilla on the wing detect bending and torsional forces encountered during flight, providing input to the flight feedback control system. During flight, wings experience complex spatio-temporal strain patterns. Because campaniform sensilla detect only local strain, their placement on the wing is presumably critical for determining the overall representation of wing deformation; however, how these sensilla are distributed across wings is largely unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis that campaniform sensilla are found in stereotyped locations across individuals of Manduca sexta, a hawkmoth. We found that although campaniform sensilla are consistently found on the same veins or in the same regions of the wings, their total number and distribution can vary extensively. This suggests that there is some robustness to variation in sensory feedback in the insect flight control system. The regions where campaniform sensilla are consistently found provide clues to their functional roles, although some patterns might be reflective of developmental processes. Collectively, our results on intraspecific variation in campaniform sensilla placement on insect wings will help reshape our thinking on the utility of mechanosensory feedback for insect flight control and guide further experimental and comparative studies. The science is clear - adopting a more plant-based diet is not just better for our bodies, it's better for the planet. Still, it's hard to let go of some of our love for meat. This is where a new crop (pun intended!) of companies are coming to step in. Saying that we can have our steak and eat it too! One such is Blue Tribe Foods, pioneers of plant-based meat in India. On their site, you'll find pork sausages, mutton kheema, and chicken momos - all of which are made with plant-based ingredients to replicate the feel and taste of meat. Their aim is to help us move away from a meat-based diet without sacrificing the taste or health. It's a fascinating new space and we thought we should speak to them on this show to help you plan out your own diet! Your host, Deepak aka Chuck speaks to Sohil and Dr Navneet from Blue Tribe - about the company, what it does, how a plant-based diet is better for us, how they make their products and a lot more. .... Indian digital payments provider Paytm got off to a shaky start with its debut on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Shares finished their first day of trading down 27 percent, as investors worried about the company's ability to earn profits. Despite these jitters, it's the country's biggest stock market listing ever and the cash it's amassed could help Paytm expand into a global payments provider. Hot Wheels are rightly called the heartthrob of the toys Industry. Ever since Elliot Handler decided to launch it in the market in 1968, it has only been winning hearts with its exquisite features and amazing technicalities. His thought of catching a segment of the immense market for little vehicle models ruled around then by the British organization Lesney Products with their Matchbox vehicles. In 1968, the market saw a launch of sixteen castings. Out of them, eleven were planned by Harry Bentley Bradley, with the first created being a dim blue Custom Camaro. Although his chiefs thought it was an ill-conceived notion, these tiny replicas of vehicles were a major achievement in the market. Bradley was from the vehicle business. He had not planned the full-working variants of the genuine vehicles. However, with the exception of the Dodge Deora idea vehicle, which had been worked on by Mike and Larry Alexander, he managed to pull off the event really well. Another of his outstanding plans was the Custom Fleetside, which depended all alone and intensely redid '64 El Camino. The hot wheels evolution has a very interesting timeline. The history of hot wheels goes as follows: ● Dodge Deora: The 1968 era saw the rise of the hot wheels car Dodge Deora. Retailing at $1, this toy car was one of the first-ever models launched by Mattel. There is a limited number of pieces available now, and it is said to retail at a rate as high as the original Dodge Deora model. The prominent mark highlight of the Deora, the pair of plastic surfboards on the back bed, is significantly incorporated in this toy set. The US sheets are red and yellow, have a short skeg (balance), and have a section number on the underside. HK sheets are orange and yellow, have a tall, more slender skeg, and have no numbers on the underside. It truly is one of its kind. ● 1974 Magenta Rodger Dodger with White Interior: This exclusive piece of the toy was retailed at $3000. The black interior of the car was quite common, however, the white interior totally changed the game. It is one of the most valuable toy cars ever made in the history of mankind. This variant had a metal base and covered redlines in the back as well. It particularly kept the interests of Hotwheels and Dodger fiascos. ● 1988 color-changing Hot Wheels: The introduction of color-changing hot wheels in the market totally revolutionized the whole marketing game. The presence of mechanisms and chemicals present on the hood of the toy car allowed it to change colours when dipped in hot and cold water. These colour shifter toys not only are entertaining for the younger population but also directs them towards an interest in science, reactions, and academics. It truly was a revolutionary moment for the whole Hotwheels industry. Even today, over 1million pieces of these color-shifting toy cars are manufactured and distributed every year. ● Toyota Off-Road Truck. Released in 2015, the Toyota Truck is based on a changed rough terrain model of the same. The underlying delivery recorded the vehicle as a Baja Racer. The Factory truck is a '90s Toyota Tundra T100. It comes in different colours schemes such as blue and white, gold and red, metal flake and green, etc. The sheer adrenaline rush that comes with introducing an offroad truck in the toy cars industry is phenomenal.

Her favourite subjects in school were biology and art. She wants to give a special shout out to her friends and family, especially her mom!
In this episode (amidst the corona crisis) I met Max, Victor, and Johann from DEORA.earth, who shared a lot of cool things around what they are building and how they are doing it. An approach that differs from many of the things we see out there. For example, we talked about one of the first test drive they ran with their tech, collaborating with the German political party Volt and testing quadratic voting with real users, in a pretty clever way! It was nice to hear about a DAO tool being used with non tech people. We also talked more about Quadratic Voting, DAO integration and, of course, leapDAO. Overall, an enjoyable conversation with builders who seem aware of what they are doing. Thanks, guys! And I hope to see your podcast on the street!

This episode is a graduate-level course on tracking renewable energy from generation to the end user, and the complexities of how policies, processes and markets all interact. My guest is Ben Gerber, the Executive Director of M-RETS, the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System based in Minneapolis. And this episode is a first for this podcast as I invite a guest co-host to join me—Tanuj Deora, Vice President of Market Development at Simple Energy. Tanuj is well known in clean energy circles – among his many previous roles he’s served as the Director of the Colorado Energy Office and more recently as EVP at SEPA, the Smart Electric Power Alliance, a role in which he’s been a guest on this podcast before. Ben, Tanuj and I start our conversation with the basics – what is MRETS and what does it do, and how do Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs, work? We look at how the REC market landscape has been changing for both buyers and sellers, and we get into the debate that’s been happening within the REC community about the value of RECs and if they’ve outlived their usefulness. Tanuj and Ben square off about questions of additionality and look at the extent to which REC policies provide a necessary market incentive to build new renewable generation or whether they can serve as a disincentive in some scenarios. From there we look at the applicability of tracking systems to other sectors such as energy efficiency and energy storage. Then we look more broadly at the implications of RECs for decarbonization, and specifically at how advances in the technology and different market and policy approaches can support meaningful climate action. And we close our conversation with a look at renewable natural gas. We recorded this episode in back in February when Ben was in DC to speak at NARUC’s annual Winter Policy Conference. Though the conversation is a couple months old now, it has aged well aside from Tanuj’s gloating about the Patriots winning the Super Bowl. Our electric grid is in the midst of arguably its biggest transformation of the last hundred years. Changes in technology, different regulatory approaches, new business models, as well as the rise of distributed generation in which consumers generate their own power behind the meter—all of these factors are fundamentally upending our traditional electric grid, as well as making people question what the role of the utility should be in the future. Joining the podcast to discuss the grid of the future are Christine Stearn, Senior Manager, 51st State Initative, and Tanuj Deora, Chief Content Officer, at SEPA, the Smart Electric Power Alliance based in Washington, D.C. In this episode, we dive into energy storage with Chief Content Officer Tanuj Deora and Senior Associate Nick Esch of SEPA, the Smart Electric Power Alliance. SEPA recently issued its annual Utility Storage Market which serves as the basis for our conversation. I start off with a ridiculously corny joke, then we get into the types of energy storage SEPA tracks; SEPA's methodology and key findings; ways in which state policies drive deployment; several different ways in which utilities are using storage both to address emergency power needs and in conjunction with distributed energy resources (DERs); how island grids can use storage to make their grids more resilient; how 2017's storage numbers are shaping up; and predictions for storage five or ten years from now, including the potential synergies with energy storage and electric vehicles. We also cover the neat analogy SEPA uses to explain the difference between power capacity and electrical energy. Resources mentioned in the show include: SEPA's 2017 Utility Energy Storage Market Snapshot Glasgow, Kentucky Electric Plant Board Village of Minster, Ohio Electric Department California's Self-Generation Incentive Program Recorded September 28, 2017. Whooping cough, caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, is an extremely dangerous and potentially fatal disease for infants. We rarely see this disease anymore because everyone is routinely vaccinated against it with the DPT childhood vaccine. But there has lately been a resurgence in whooping cough cases, caused primarily by a reformulation of the vaccine to make it safer, which unfortunately also made it less protective against this disease. Dr. Rajendar Deora is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Wake Forest University. Dr. Deora’s research involves improving the whooping cough vaccine. Dr. Deora is studying how to improve this vaccine back to pre-reformulation levels of protection, without reducing its safety. Dr. Deora discusses vaccines, whooping cough, and his scientific career choice. Dr. Deora reminds everyone that “Vaccines Work!” Discussants (in alphabetical order): Dr. Neal Guentzel (Professor and Parliamentarian of STCEID, UTSA) Dr. Karl Klose (Professor and Director of STCEID, UTSA) Dr. Janakiram Seshu (Associate professor, STCEID, UTSA) microTalk is supported, in part, by the American Society for Microbiology.
