An der Seite ihrer Copilotin Jara Hain bewältigte Claire Schönborn in ihrer erst vierten Rallye die tückischen Bedingungen bei Schnee und Eis in souveräner Manier und steuerte ihren Ford Fiesta Rally3 auf siebten Rang in der JWRC-Wertung ins Ziel. Als Lohn für die eindrucksvolle Leistung darf das erfolgreiche Team nun auch die weiteren vier JWRC-Saisonläufe im M-Sport-Team von Malcolm Wilson bestreiten. La muerte del piloto oficial de Hyundai Motorsport en un accidente haciendo un test antes del Rally de Croacia de la próxima semana ha dejado atónita al mundo de los rallies y del automovilismo. La carrera del irlandés de 33 años se ha visto trágicamente truncada antes de alcanzar su mejor momento. Y aquí detallamos por qué con Craig Breen se ha ido un hombre especial. Aunque Breen no logró ninguna victoria en el WRC, su pasión y su conocimiento de los rallies eran incuestionables, y su actitud sincera y su ingenio le convirtieron en uno de los favoritos de los aficionados. Nueve podios en el WRC, entre ellos seis segundos puestos, demostraron que, además de ser un personaje entrañable con una sonrisa contagiosa, tenía el talento necesario al volante para ser considerado un piloto de élite entre la generación actual del WRC. Breen, nacido en Waterford, Irlanda, quizás siempre estuvo destinado a acabar en algún lugar de los rallies. Así de grande era su pasión por ellos, influenciada por el hecho de haber crecido en una familia irlandesa apasionada por los rallies. Sin duda, esa pasión se vio reforzada por su padre, Ray Breen, campeón nacional irlandés de rallies, que se convirtió en una imagen familiar al volante de un MG Metro 6R4 y un Ford Escort WRC. Sin embargo, fue en el karting donde Craig dio su primer paso en el automovilismo, ganando el título irlandés de Fórmula A en 2006 antes de competir en Europa dos años más tarde, tras saciar su amor por los rallies recorriendo sus primeras etapas 12 meses antes. Al final, decidió centrarse en los rallies a tiempo completo a partir de 2009 y así comenzó un viaje que llevaría a Breen a lo más alto. Ese viaje no fue sencillo, ya que la primera temporada completa en el WRC no llegó hasta el año pasado con M-Sport. Desde el principio hubo indicios del talento que un día le llevaría al podio del WRC. Breen empezó rápidamente a acaparar titulares, ganando el International Ford Fiesta Sporting Trophy, que combinó con triunfos en las series británica e irlandesa durante una primera temporada completa en rallies. Entre los premios conseguidos estaba un año de aprendizaje con M-Sport, que no hizo más que acrecentar su larga afición por los coches de rally Ford, provocada por ver a su reconocido héroe, el gran piloto de rally irlandés Frank Meagher, pilotar coches de la marca del óvalo azul en su tierra natal. La 2010 fue una temporada en el Campeonato Británico de Rallies, combinada con un programa en el Campeonato Irlandés de Rallies de Asfalto, donde terminó segundo en la general. Pero quizá el momento más llamativo de ese año fue una victoria en el Rally del Ulster y un 12o puesto en la general compitiendo contra la élite del WRC con un coche de la clase S2000 en el Rally de Gales GB. Su éxito continuó cuando Breen se aseguró la Copa de la WRC Academy en la temporada inaugural de ese campeonato, en 2011, antes de ganar el título S-WRC de coches S2000 pilotando un Ford Fiesta en 2012. Pero esa temporada triunfal se vio empañada por la tragedia cuando murió su copiloto de toda la vida Gareth Roberts mientras competía en el Rally Targa Florio que contaba parte del Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Fue un duro trago en lo que acabó siendo una temporada agridulce. El título del S-WRC fue la demostración del talento de Breen, reconocido por Peugeot. La marca francesa fichó al irlandés para su programa en el Campeonato Europeo de Rallies en 2013, junto al antiguo copiloto de Kris Meeke, Paul Nagle, iniciándose ahí una asociación que continuó en el WRC hasta la retirada de Paul Nagle en 2022. Breen terminaría tercero en el campeonato durante dos años consecutivos antes de terminar subcampeón por detrás de Kajetan Kajetanowics en 2015. Su sueño de la infancia se hizo realidad en 2016, cuando Breen se unió a la máxima categoría del WRC pilotando a tiempo parcial para el equipo semioruga de Citroën. La marca francesa se tomó un año sabático para preparar el nuevo reglamento que se pondría en marcha la temporada siguiente. Un emotivo tercer puesto en el Rally de Finlandia, su primer podio en el WRC, le ayudó a asegurarse un asiento para la siguiente temporada. Otro podio emotivo, segundo en Suecia en 2018, llegó antes de perder su asiento a finales de año, cuando Citroen firmó con Sébastien Ogier y Esapekka Lappi para lo que acabó siendo su último año en el WRC. Cuando se cerró la puerta de Citroën se abrió la ventana de Hyundai, ya que la marca coreana se hizo con el irlandés a tiempo parcial de 2019 a 2021, donde disfrutó de la mejor racha de su carrera en el WRC, terminando en el podio en cinco de nueve pruebas conduciendo un i20. Al final, logró llegar a su santo grial: una primera temporada completa del WRC con M-Sport en 2022, reuniéndose de nuevo con la icónica marca Ford y el equipo que ayudó a impulsar su carrera. "Ha sido un largo camino para nosotros en el Campeonato del Mundo de Rallies con muchos giros y vueltas, pero ahora nos han dado un billete dorado para conducir para la marca más prestigiosa del automovilismo y luchar por el Campeonato del Mundo de Rallies", describió en su momento. "Añadir mi nombre a la lista de pilotos que han pilotado para Ford es un poco surrealista, pilotos como Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Colin McRae y Carlos Sainz. Tener mi nombre grabado en los libros de historia junto a esos grandes es un privilegio enorme". Sin embargo, ese billete dorado no tardó en torcerse, ya que una serie de incidentes empañaron la temporada que se saldó con dos podios (tercero en Montecarlo y segundo en Cerdeña) y que acabó con su salida del equipo, un año antes de acabar el contrato que había firmado. Algo no acababa de encajar y la manera de mostrar sin tapujos sus sentimientos, siempre presente en las entrevistas de final de etapa, mostraba que estaba claramente afectado por esa racha de resultados. Por desgracia, la sonrisa contagiosa y el ingenio de Breen rara vez aparecieron durante 2022. Aunque su paso por M-Sport no funcionó como se esperaba, era muy querido por el equipo y por su fundador, Malcolm Wilson. "Era un piloto con un talento increíble, pero además tenía un entusiasmo contagioso por todos los elementos de los rallies y un conocimiento enciclopédico sin igual de este deporte", dijo Wilson como parte de los numerosos homenajes que el mundo del motor rindió a Breen al conocer la trágica noticia de su muerte. "Su ardiente pasión por este deporte contribuyó a despertar el interés de los aficionados de todo el mundo. Es una noticia desgarradora". Aunque Breen era un apasionado al volante, estaba igualmente entusiasmado por inspirar a la siguiente generación, ofreciendo apoyo financiero a la categoría Irish Junior 1000 dentro del Sligo Pallets Forest Rally Championship. El patrocinio incluía un fondo de premios por valor de 1.250 euros en vales por evento. "Este deporte me ha dado mucho, y ahora es el momento de devolverlo a la próxima generación de jóvenes que aspiran a dejar huella en los rallies", declaró Breen en febrero. "Estos pilotos son el futuro, y estoy encantado de poder ayudarles en los primeros pasos del viaje". Esa generosidad y pasión resumían lo que era Breen. Era un apasionado de los rallies y un piloto de enorme talento que consiguió lo que a sus ojos era el premio máximo: competir en el WRC. FOLLOW UP: WINTERKORN AND FOUR OTHERS CHARGED WITH FRAUDA court in Braunschweig, Germany, has allowed a case to move forward charging Winterkorn and four other former VW managers with fraud. Additionally, the court has allowed an amendment to add additional criminal gang charges.
