New cases of dementia are also projected to nearly double to 1 million a year by 2060.  The cognitive decline and memory impairments associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia can make it difficult to follow the branching storylines of a novel or the flow of facts in a newspaper or magazine article.  But as traditional avenues for literary enjoyment close, new ones can and should open for this growing population. That’s the guiding mission behind Mirador, a quarterly magazine Nikki Jardin co-founded in Portland nearly four years ago to be accessible to people with dementia. From the font style and size, to the way paragraphs are structured or photos are displayed to accommodate changes to vision and recognition, the whole magazine is designed with dementia in mind.   Jardin joins us to talk about the inspiration for starting Mirador and the magazine’s recent international expansion and collaboration with other dementia-friendly publications.

La vida, no: lo que se ha vivido no hay forma de arreglarlo, ni de limpiarlo, ni de tirarlo. ¿Te das cuenta qué tremendo?»1 En esta primera parte de su novela Sobre héroes y tumbas titulada «El dragón y la princesa», el escritor argentino Ernesto Sábato se vale de su personaje Alejandra para llevarnos a una profunda reflexión sobre la vida humana. Bruno, amigo de Alejandra, tiene razón... en parte. A diferencia de los escritores, que tienen la opción de rehacer lo que no les ha salido bien como si lo hubieran hecho perfectamente desde el principio sin haberse equivocado en momento alguno, nosotros no podemos darnos ese lujo. Tenemos que tragarnos nuestras imperfecciones, ya que la vida no la podemos volver a vivir. En lo que no tiene razón Bruno es que sí hay forma de arreglar, de limpiar y de tirar a la basura todo lo malo de nuestra vida pasada. No es cuestión de hacer caso omiso de nuestras faltas, como si jamás hubiéramos errado, sino todo lo contrario. Podemos arrepentirnos de nuestras faltas y pedirle perdón a Dios por ellas, confiados en lo que afirma el apóstol Juan: que «si confesamos nuestros pecados, Dios, que es fiel y justo, nos los perdonará y nos limpiará de toda maldad».2 Pero ¿qué de nuestra vida futura? ¿Acaso no hay forma de mejorar lo que nos falta por vivir? Claro que sí. Con la ayuda de Dios, todos tenemos la opción de cambiar los patrones de conducta que han malogrado nuestra vida. A esa transformación Jesucristo la llama «nacer de nuevo».3 Se trata de permitir que Él nos transforme mediante la renovación de nuestra mente.4 Cuando dejamos que Cristo nos cambie de ese modo, llegamos a ser lo que el apóstol Pablo llama «una nueva creación», y tenemos por qué exclamar, junto con él: «¡Lo viejo ha pasado, ha llegado ya lo nuevo!»5 ¿Nos damos cuenta qué tremendo?
