Fellow brunch hater, Mary Katherine Ham, returns to discuss Trump's win on the heels of debating whether or not she and Bridget would vote for him in the lead up to the election, and their respective “Awww, f*ck it” last minute decisions. They cover the true nature of RFK Jr.'s influence in swinging votes for Trump, why COVID lockdowns and policies were the last straw for many people, red-pilled yogis, when independent media starts to seem not so independent anymore, how Trump & Elon are taking a wrecking ball to the Overton window and the danger of the anti-woke people becoming as annoying as the woke people. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Walk-Ins Welcome with Bridget Phetasy - Podcast Bridget Phetasy admires grit and authenticity. Your Guide to the Matt Gaetz ScandalState of Play:Ethics report is unreleased as of now, a hacker has apparently obtained parts of the Department of Justice investigation that did not end in prosecution of GaetzThe iron law of political scandals, as written on the wall of a DC backroom (wash your hands after inspecting): if the public already knows about your dirty deeds and hasn't totally written you off, keep chugging. But every new bit of information that comes out is an exponential risk. The Gaetz story has been publicly aired for years. So it is really only a liability if new information comes to light. So what is already known? That way we know if something new comes along.Well, it comes down to two main questions.* Are Sugar Babies w****s?* Is it illegal to sleep with a minor who misrepresents their age? Can the sex be proven beyond a reasonable doubt?Let's start with question number one. Are Sugar Babies w****s?Which for the pure of heart will begin with a subquestion, what is a Sugar Baby?A sugar baby is typically a younger individual who enters into a relationship with an older, affluent partner—known as a sugar daddy or sugar mommy—in exchange for financial support, gifts, or other benefits. These relationships are often characterized by mutual agreements where the sugar baby provides companionship, and in some cases, intimacy, while receiving monetary assistance, luxury items, or experiences in return. These connections, like much of our modern world, is facilitated by the internet. For example…Seeking.com is an online dating platform that connects successful and attractive individuals seeking mutually beneficial relationships. And so it was on Seeking.com that Joel Greenberg, a then-friend of Gaetz who eventually pled guilty to sex trafficking and informed on the congressman, met women to form such relationships. Here is an ABC report of a back and forth between one of the women…"I have a friend flying in and we are trying to make plans for tonight. What are your plans for later," Greenberg wrote to the woman, whose identity ABC News is withholding for privacy purposes. "And how much of an allowance will you be requiring :)" Greenberg added. The woman responded by telling Greenberg she has "a friend who introduced me to the website that I could bring" and said she "usually" requires "$400 per meet."Greenberg then sent the woman a photo of Gaetz taking a selfie with students at Pea Ridge Elementary from a 2017 visit, and wrote, "My friend," indicating that Gaetz would be the friend joining him."Oooh my friend thinks he's really cute!" the woman responded.Greenberg then replied that Gaetz was "down here only for the day," adding "we work hard and play hard," before asking, "Have you ever tried molly," referring to the drug MDMA, or Ecstasy. As Greenberg was discussing payment for the get-together, the woman asked if Gaetz used the same website Greenberg had used to meet her. Greenberg replied, in part, "He knows the deal :)," referring to the Florida congressman. The former tax collector then said he would book a "suite Downtown" for the gathering.Sugar Baby websites are built on the idea that wealthy people connect with attractive people. The implication of money or expensive gifts being exchanged is inherent to the concept. But… are the women legally w****s? Specifically, women who are charging money for the act of sex? This is a very important question. Flying a friend you eventually have sex with across state lines on your dime is a nice thing to do. Flying a w***e across state lines to pay for intercourse is sex trafficking. We do not have an answer for this. Although Greenberg plead guilty to sex trafficking so he seemingly admitted it.In general it is a moral and legal question that I am sure many rich men, including possibly some in congress, likely don't want answered. However, it gets even more serious when one of those women is 17 years old. Which leads us to our second question. Is it illegal to sleep with a minor who misrepresents their age? Can the sex be proven beyond a reasonable doubt?A lawyer for two women interviewed by the House Ethics Committee has said the following:Leppard told POLITICO on Sunday that his clients had attended between five to 10 "sex parties" with the former Florida Representative between 2017 and 2018. Gaetz was already in Congress at the time.Leppard also said one of his clients witnessed Gaetz having sex with another woman who was then 17 years old. They were at a house party in Florida."She testified [that] in July of 2017, at this house party, she was walking out to the pool area, and she looked to her right, and she saw Rep. Gaetz having sex with her friend, who was 17," Leppard said.A report from The Daily Beast identified two Venmo transactions Gaetz had in 2018 with Joe Greenberg, an accused sex trafficker, for a total of $900. Greenberg then sent the money to three teen girls in transactions labeled "tuition" and "school."The woman, now in her 20s, reportedly confirmed this during interviews with the House Ethics committee. In Florida, engaging in sexual activity with a minor is illegal, regardless of whether the minor misrepresents their age. The state enforces strict liability in such cases, meaning that a defendant's belief about the minor's age, even if based on the minor's false representation, is not a valid defense. Florida Statute 794.021 explicitly states that ignorance or a reasonable mistake regarding the victim's age is not a defense to prosecution under sexual offense laws. And yet… the woman in question also testified about this to criminal investigators and no charges were filed against Gaetz. This might suggest that the case against him is less than air tight. Or that proof beyond personal testimony would not stand up at trial. So no… you cannot claim ignorance on having sex with a 17-year-old in Florida. But also, there might not be evidence to prove it happened beyond a he said/she said.Again: this has all been known for years after Greenberg's arrest and the Department of Justice investigation. Will there be new information? We have to wait and see.But it also might not matter, because Gaetz' higher hurdle to clear has nothing to do with what he did or didn't do as a military-grade horny Florida Man bachelor… but rather his conduct as a rhetorical bomb thrower who has personally torched members of the Senate whose vote he now needs to court.-That and more on the show! Good morning! There are five days to Thanksgiving and a lot of us are already making shopping lists, if as yet for me only in my head. I love grocery shopping, a love I passed down to my daughter, and somewhere on the interwebs is a short video of her surfing her shopping cart through Fred Meyer market in Portland saying, “Wheeeee!” I love New York City, but the grocery shopping experience after nearly 30 years of well-lit, wide-aisled west coast supermarkets? Abysmal. As I mention in the audio, my plans this year got a little kiboshed. But! From adversity, opportunity, and I'll now go to two Thanksgivings, one day-of event with a lot of people I don't know and to whom I will get to feed pie, and a smaller one with family, for which I am not going go the whole 9 yards, there will be only 5 or 7 of us, a number likely to swell. We will not have turkey at this one but a roast goose, because one of the guests ate it once 30 years in Prague and remembers it fondly. I have never roasted a good but did watch some YouTubes and scanned for recipes and feel pretty confident, though will be very happy for your tips, and especially for a not-too-sweet glaze with which to baste the bird. I like sweet-and-meat but others do not so, hit me up. I am also going to be making a change to a standard recipe, if not a change this horrific. As I mentioned yesterday on the Twitter* machine, the correct number of eggs in mac-and-cheese is zero. What a I changing? The stuffing. Let me be clear: THIS WOULD NEVER BE THE CASE WERE I MAKING THE TURKEY. Stuffing, the kind I learned from my mom, is my favorite food, and while this means I should make it more than once a year, maybe just to stick in a chicken, I do not. A lack of at-hand giblets (which I knew meant the whole mess of innards you find in the bird; in the audio I meant gizzards, which I think is probably a fake word but anyway) might contribute, but mainly it's because to my mind you need to make vat of stuffing because it's so delicious and you want to feed it to many people and, if you are me, you need eat a great deal of it for yourself, before it goes into the turkey, and while you're stuffing the turkey, and at the dinner (three helpings), and cold from the fridge. I already look forward to 2024's repast. This year, along with the goose - and the potatoes that will be roasted in the goose fat - I will try a new stuffing recipe, one from my girl Alison Roman. As mentioned in the audio, I am already making changes to the recipe in my head. Here she is making it.Food is love (say it with me), and we've had a lot of both in this apartment these past few weeks, dinner parties and late-night hangs, including a few nights ago with a lot of the Reason mag peeps as well as the Fifth guys and their most recent guest, the awesome, funny, super-cute, whip-smart Mary Katherine Ham.Then two two nights ago - I am typing this at 8:39am on Sunday, hoping to get this up in time! - we welcomed our beloved Yael Bar Tur back from Israel. She was on the pod last month and in our hearts always. We ate all the food and drank all the wine and sang some songs and gave each other shirts we picked up in war zones. These friends, this life, I love it so much.A few links mentioned in the audio:“Sam Harris: The Bright Line Between Good and Evil,” Honestly podcastAnd the recipe! This, too, I love to much, and am sending all buttery love to you and yours xxThanksgiving Stuffing* 3 loaves white bread, supermarket variety, not too dense. I am liking potato bread these days. * 2 good-sized yellow onions, small dice* 6-8 stalks celery, small dice* 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter* salt, pepper, poultry seasoning, thyme if you have it* 6 - 8 cups turkey stock, plus the giblets you've simmered in the stock, choppedA day or two before you plan to make the stuffing, let bread slices dry out a bit. Turn then a few times so somewhat evenly dried but don't stress. Once semi-dry, cut bread into cubes. In a large heavy-bottomed pot, melt the butter. Add onions and celery and cook, stirring frequently, until translucent and onions are starting to brown just a bit. Add your chopped giblets. (You are of course welcome to add the meat you chop off the turkey neck. I eat the neck, sending all squeamish people running from the room.) Unless your pot is massive, remove half of the onion mix; you'll be making the stuffing in two batches.Add half your cubed bread to onion-mix, stir to start coating the bread, sprinkling with salt, pepper, poultry seasoning and some thyme. Stir stir. Now start adding your stock, a cup at a time, until stuffing is moist but not wet.Stuff your turkey - or not! Any that does not fit in the bird, and there will be plenty, you can put in a buttered dish, maybe drizzle a little melted butter, and bake at a 350F oven until crisp on top.*And some outro love from the original X (man). Would that I could, I would feed him a wheelbarrow of stuffing and it would not give him half the joy he's given me. Happy Thanksgiving John Doe! This is a public episode. It is no secret that the mainstream media leans left. From the ways in which they choose to report on critical issues, to the questions they decide to ask political leaders on different sides of the aisle, media bias is undeniable. Terrible Opinions Matthias: I thought Lin-Manuel Miranda was rude when I first heard the story about he talked to Vice President Mike Pence from the stage when Pence saw “Hamilton.” But now that I’ve enjoyed his musical work and looked at his remarks in context, I’m more inclined to be OK with what he said. Jordan: I understand what Rachel Bloom was attempting to do with her performance on Bill Nye’s new show (even though she obviously failed). Bill Nye’s handmaid world The big news this week was the GOP’s healthcare bill, a swap for Obamacare that hasn’t made anyone happy. Matthias talked about some of the reactions to the healthcare bill, including the vitriol directed at people like Mary Katherine Ham who are trying to be reasonable. One of the accusations against the GOP is that they are trying to take healthcare from women in particular and that they are targeting pregnant moms. We touched on a comment in TV host Bill Nye’s new Netflix show that showed how progressives target moms and children. The former “Science Guy” suggested that the government start taxing larger families with “extra kids” because they are supposedly bad for the environment. “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been a rallying cry for a lot of liberal feminists who think Republicans are on the verge of outlawing abortion and cutting off access to birth control (Spoiler: They’re not). As world powers shift abroad and changes like the new healthcare bill disrupt their lives here, people feel less safe than ever. Jordan noted that recent TV has become increasingly dark and emotionally dense, whether it's "The Handmaid's Tale," "13 Reasons Why" or even the surprise hit "This Is Us," which told the story of a real, relateable family that was funny and enjoyable but still included themes of heartbreak, tragedy and loss.
