According to Ex. 13:21, as the people of Israel made their way out of Egypt, we're told that Yahweh went before the people of Israel in a pillar of cloud and fire. What's odd, however, is that the next chapter tells us it was the “angel of God” who went before the host of Israel in the pillar (Ex 4:19). So, how do we explain the difference between these two passages? Did an angel lead the people out of Egypt, or was it Yahweh himself? On this episode, Shane discusses these questions and more with Matt Foreman and Doug Van Dorn, authors of The Angel of the Lord: A Biblical, Historical, and Theological Study. For a gift of any amount to help support the work of The Humble Skeptic podcast, we'll send you a 12-page PDF resource titled “Finding Christ in All of Scripture.” Click here for a preview.SHOW NOTESRelated BooksThe Angel of the Lord, Doug Van Dorn & Matt ForemanJesus in the Old Testament, Iain DuguidJourneys with Jesus, Dennis JohnsonEchoes of Exodus: Tracing the Theme of Redemption, Roberts & WilsonJoseph: A Story of Love, Hate, Slavery, Power & Forgiveness, John LennoxThe Surprising Genius of Jesus, Peter J. The anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom comes again when a rightwing political backlash threatens the movement toward true democracy. The situation was similar in 2003, when we reported on the 40th anniversary (featuring Martin Luther King III and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's Matt Foreman). A nationally televised 2008 LGBTQ Democratic Presidential Forum presented by the Human Rights Campaign was one of Barack Obama's first stops on his way to the White House. And in NewsWrap: the International Chess Federation at least temporarily prevents transgender women from playing against cisgender women, trans social media influencer Wendy Guevara wins the first season of La Casa De Los Famosos México, vandals attack Berlin's queer Holocaust monument, Williams Institute researchers find that many Florida parents long to escape the “don't say gay” Parental Rights in Education Act, Baptist-run Baylor University in Texas prevails with a religious exemption case before the U.S. Education Department's Office of Civil Rights, nonpartisan judicial watchdog group Fix the Court files a misconduct petition against the Texas appeals judge who sent corporate lawyers to a certifiably anti-queer legal hate group for “religious liberty training,” and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by Melanie Keller and David Hunt (produced by Brian DeShazor). We tend to think of the Olympic lifts as just two lifts, but there are numerous derivates that each provide their own unique benefits. The muscle snatch is one overlooked variation that can help you maximize power while minimizing the technical demands. On this week's episode lifting coach Wil Fleming breaks down the lift and what makes it special. The topic of how Olympic lifting fits into the training of non-lifters has been a topic we've addressed on numerous occasions on this site. In particular, check out the multi-part roundtable discussion we had with weightlifting coaches (including Fleming). We also covered weightlifting with Matt Foreman on Episode 82 and did this Q&A with legendary lifting coach John Thrush. We discussed Dan Pfaff's 3-day rollover plan which we have written about and also discussed with Pfaff himself. This approach also has many similarities to Bondarchuk's methodology.

As mentioned on last week's program, most commentators tend to argue that Genesis 32 is about Jacob's refusing to let go of God until he received his desired blessing, which of course is something that all believers should strive to do as well. Or is it? On this episode, the hosts continue to explore the idea that Jacob was literally “in the dark” about his assailant's identity and may even have thought he was fighting his own brother, Esau. If so, this would indicate that he was still trying to secure the blessing of firstborn status by his own efforts. So what's the ultimate point of this passage, and how does it relate to the Gospel in Genesis? As Jacob returns to the promised land in Genesis 32, he's attacked in the middle of the night. As the two men struggle until the break of day, it slowly begins to dawn on Jacob that there's something special about his wrestling partner. In fact, by the end of the encounter, it's revealed to Jacob that he's actually been “striving with God.” Many commentators suggest that the patriarch wrestled with God in order to receive a divine blessing, but is that really what's going on here? At what point does Jacob even realize this man's true identity? Many athletes pick up weightlifting as a hobby after retiring from their primary sport. After years of training without proper technique, transitioning to a new sport often requires a step back to relearn technique. That's exactly what we've been struggling with lately. Why did God call Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac? Why would he ask a loving parent to even consider such a thing? Is this story a kind of object lesson meant to show us how much we should be willing to give up for God, or is something else being revealed in this unsettling account? What if the focus of the narrative actually centers on that which God is promising to sacrifice for us in the fullness of time? Have you ever wondered if Jesus appeared in the Old Testament in more than just the predictive prophecies about him? Does the Old Testament present us with a Unitarian picture of God until the New Testament comes around and gives us more Revelation and tells us that God is actually a trinity after all? Or can traces of trinitarian thought be found in the Old Testament? Douglas Van Dorn and Matt Foreman wrote a book titled "The Angel of The Lord” which gives answers to all of these. And in this episode, Mr. Minton interviews Dorn and Foreman about their book and they discuss some of its contents. “The Angel Of The Lord: A Biblical, Historical, and Theological Study” by Douglas Van Dorn and Matt Foreman —> https://www.amazon.com/Angel-LORD-Biblical-Historical-Theological/dp/1735003808 "A Dissertation Concerning the Angel Who Is Called the Redeemer” by Peter Allix, edited by Douglas Van Dorn —> https://www.amazon.com/Dissertation-Concerning-Called-Redeemer-Scripture/dp/0986237655/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=&fbclid=IwAR2s-wonxdZCNptq8IcLui0wnonw1qdSzCy9YzcyjVNHLuByDaTZdm3Qp2k "The Worship of the Lord Jesus in the Old Testament” - Gerard De Gols, edited by Douglas Van Dorn --> https://www.amazon.com/Worship-Jesus-Testament-Christ-Scripture/dp/0986237671/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1623269124&sr=1-12&fbclid=IwAR2LfhAYHzn2lXyDf9tc5loB1n2KD6UO7yftHB780j4FHYMeQZPnb8CE4Dk --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/evan-minton/support
After their exodus from Egypt, God announced to the people of Israel that he would “send an angel to guard them on the way and to bring them to the place he has prepared” (Ex. 23:20). Who was this angel, and how are the words of this passage echoed and alluded to throughout all of Scripture? What are we to make of all those passages in the Old Testament in which “the Angel of the Lord” appears on the scene and proceeds to speak and act as God himself? In their new book, The Angel of the Lord: A Biblical, Historical, and Theological Study, Matt Foreman and Doug Van Dorn argue that this mysterious Angel appears much more frequently than many people realize since he is called by a variety of names including the Angel, the Name, the Glory, the Face, the Right Hand, and the Word. In the world of sport, I doubt there is anything more loathed than national governing bodies. On the one hand, they have a difficult job since no matter how hard they try, it is impossible for them to make everyone happy with limited resources. But on the other hand, they often shoot themselves in the foot before they start to do anything. This is why it has been surprising for us to her near universal acclaim for what is going on at USA Weightlifting.
