One of the greatest shows on Earth has been going on now for several months in Hawaii, where the Kīlauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been erupting since late December. The Kīlauea volcano is the most active volcano on Earth. It's also a relatively safe volcano in that it spends most of its time simmering and bubbling without any spectacularly explosive eruptions. But lately it has been putting on some incredible shows of lava fountains, with one glowing string of magma soaring about 1,000 feet in the air, a truly spectacular sight to see. To understand what's going on with Kīlauea and what danger it poses, we're joined today by Matt Patrick, a research geologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Chris Johnson, Los Alamos National Lab Significant progress has been made in probing the state of an earthquake fault by applying machine learning to continuous seismic waveforms. The breakthroughs were originally obtained from laboratory shear experiments and numerical simulations of fault shear, then successfully extended to slow-slipping faults. Applying these machine learning models typically require task-specific labeled data for training and tuning for experimental results or a region of interest, thus limiting the generalization and robustness when broadly applied. Foundation models diverge from labeled data training procedures and are widely used in natural language processing and computer vision. The primary different is these models learn a generalized representation of the data, thus allowing several downstream tasks performed in a unified framework. Here we apply the Wav2Vec 2.0 self-supervised framework for automatic speech recognition to continuous seismic signals emanating from a sequence of moderate magnitude earthquakes during the 2018 caldera collapse at the Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawai'i. We pre-train the Wav2Vec 2.0 model using caldera seismic waveforms and augment the model architecture to predict contemporaneous surface displacement during the caldera collapse sequence, a proxy for fault displacement. We find the model displacement predictions to be excellent. The model is adapted for near-future prediction information and found hints of prediction capability, but the results are not robust. The results demonstrate that earthquake faults emit seismic signatures in a similar manner to laboratory and numerical simulation faults, and artificial intelligence models developed for encoding audio of speech may have important applications in studying active fault zones.

[SEGMENT 1-1] ICYMI Post-Christmas Edition I hope you are enjoying your time off with family and friends. I won a $10 gift certificate at a party at friend's house, so I'm a happy camper. What's happened since we last got together? Well I was forced to do a “best of” show, and I chose the days after the election to remind us of our big win. But I want to touch on something deeper in this ICYMI segment. Much happened as we celebrated Christmas…I will get to some of it. Title Options"Success, Failure, and Settling: Life's Rigged Lottery""Cut to the Chase: Lessons from Life and a Rigged System""Three Choices, One Revolution: Success, Failure, and Settling"Cut to the ChaseI'm not sure why my mind defaults to cutting to the chase. Maybe it's my programming as a management consultant, where I've heard more excuses for failure than a politician at a budget hearing. Here's an example of cutting to the chase: the LGBTQIA+ community has nothing on conservative men—we, too, were all once trapped in a female's body. Let's scratch that argument off the grievance list. Of course, it's a tongue-in-cheek joke meant to highlight a bigger point: we all have our issues. But issues don't matter as much as how we deal with them. In life, you get three choices: succeed, fail, or settle. Let's break that down.Success: The Rarely Complained-About ProblemSuccess is the toughest road, yet oddly enough, nobody complains about having it—except Leftists. If a Leftist won the lottery, they'd demand reparations for the 49 other states they didn't live in. Speaking of the lottery, a guy just hit the $1.5 billion Powerball and took home $628 million. Guess who really hit the jackpot? The government, of course. They're not playing the lottery—they're winning it. The lottery is a perfect metaphor for government: the people put in all the money, and Uncle Sam shows up like the cousin you didn't know you had, grabbing the biggest slice of the pie. Elon Musk could probably run the lottery for 10% of the take and still send you a Tesla as a thank-you card. https://www.lotteryusa.com/opinion/surprising-economics-behind-states-lottery-money The revenue for the 45 states that participate in government-operated lotteries has grown by over 80 percent since 2010. (…) From that humble rebirth, however, state lotteries have snowballed into a massive government business. In 2022, the total revenue from the 45 states that participate in government-operated lotteries, plus the District of Columbia, clocked in at nearly $108 billion (a rather staggering 83 percent increase from 2010 figures). States with the highest total lottery revenue include New York, Florida, Texas, and California, which each took in north of $8 billion that year. For at least 10 states, lottery games regularly generate more total revenue than corporate income taxes. While these swelling proceeds are indisputably impressive—especially considering the growth over the past decade or so—they look even more striking when examined on a per capita basis. Essentially the lottery is a way to tax you that gives you a one-in-a-trillion chance to get your money back. Think of it as FUN taxation. Where do you think this money really goes? To “education”? Another story for another day…[SEGMENT 1-2] Failure: The Unexpected TeacherNow, let's talk failure. It's where most of us live, and oddly enough, it's where we learn the most. My grandfather used to say, “Discipline your disappointment; it's always there—until it isn't.” Translation: embrace failure. You'll face plenty of it before you taste success. Some of my best lessons came while failing. I've failed in business, relationships, and even hobbies. You're looking at a guy who plays piano so badly that my piano probably thinks I'm trolling it. But I settled for being terrible at piano because I don't need to be Van Cliburn—I'm too busy succeeding elsewhere. Failure builds character. And if you don't embrace it, you'll never get to the next level. People stuck in failure are the ones who missed the memo: it's not a final destination—it's just a layover.Settling: The Comfortable CompromiseAnd now, settling. We all do it in some areas because we can't be great at everything. But there's a difference between settling smartly and selling out. Thoreau said, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation.” That's true, but it's also a choice. Did you settle for a job you hate because it pays the bills? Or did you take the leap and find out what you're made of? Did you marry someone who makes you better, or did you settle for someone who just makes dinner? Settling isn't always bad. Sometimes it's strategic. But if you're in a rut, ask yourself: are you settling because it's easy, or because it's right? The Revolution of Not SettlingThis year, many of us made a choice not to settle. Politically, we dumped the high-maintenance “gold-digger” government. It's time to find a fiscally responsible “around-the-way girl”— who doesn't want a new butt, new boobs, and lips that look like she's a cartoon character in The Simpson's. Join us for SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 68, where we explore the latest cosmic discoveries and technological advancements shaping our understanding of the universe.First, we uncover new evidence suggesting that Venus is volcanically active. By analysing data from NASA's Magellan radar, scientists have identified two volcanoes on Venus that erupted in the early 1990s. This discovery adds to the growing body of evidence that Venus may be far more volcanically active than previously thought.Next, we discuss the discovery of a new kind of volcanic eruption on Earth. Researchers have identified a unique eruption mechanism at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, describing it as a "stomp rocket" eruption driven by sudden pressure increases as the ground collapses. Finally, we look forward to the maiden flight of the European Space Agency's new Ariane 6 rocket, now slated for next month. Volcanoes in space...supervolcanoes here on Earth... and lava lakes everywhere! To get an expert opinion on eruptions, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Dr. Sam Tramontano, a Post-Doctoral researcher in geology and Earth sciences at The American Museum of Natural History. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, the Juno spacecraft's two recent close passes (under 1000 miles) of Jupiter's moon Io and the amazing images of volcanic activity and Io's lava lake “Loki Patera” with an island in its center! Allen and Samantha dive into the fascinating and little-understood mechanics of lava lakes, which continue to remain liquid at their surface and persist for years at a time despite tidal fluctuations. You'll hear about the Erta Ale lava lake in Ethiopia and the Kilauea lava lake in Hawaii. For our first audience question, Ellis asks, “Are there volcanoes on Venus?” Sam explains how studying volcanism on Venus is a promising avenue but that we don't yet have a clear answer to that question. She talks about how scientists are only now untangling the Magellan mission data that suggests geologic activity on Venus. You'll find out how Sam, a sax player who went to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (the school in Fame), ended up falling in love with geology and never looking back. And you'll hear all about the interesting geology – including billion-year-old rocks and “mica book crystals” – that you can find in and around New York City. Our next audience question is from Bianca, who asks, “How did global warming begin?” Samantha explains the difference between normal climate cycles and the climate crisis we're in now as a result of human activity. We discuss the impact of volcanic super-eruptions on atmospheric CO2, including prehistoric eruptions like the three Yellowstone eruptions and the rifting of the Atlantic ocean and splitting of Pangaea. Dr. Tramontano, a self-described “Ash Lady” who is currently studying active volcanoes on Iceland's Reykanes Peninsula, explains how we would have at least a year's notice if something that large were to happen in the future. We end the episode with Sam describing what eruptions and cooling lava flows sound like. If you'd like to know more about Sam, you can follow her on Instagram @samtramrox and X @samtramrox. And if you're a young undergraduate in Earth Sciences, you should check out her YouTube channel @EarthOpticsVideos to see what rocks look like under the microscope. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is such a unique destination in the National Park System. Located on the Big Island, it's surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, it has rainforests, and it boasts two active volcanoes in Mauna Loa and Kilauea. A visit to Hawai'i Volcanoes comes with a number of options. Do you simply hope to catch an eruption of Kilauea and head somewhere else in Hawaii, do you explore the backcountry with its more than 160 miles of trails, or you try to soak in the Hawaiian culture? Hopefully you'll do all of that and more, because the park is so remarkable and offers so much. But it also can be a dangerous place. While the volcanoes are not explosive like Mount Saint Helens was back in 1980, visitors still can get close to Kilauea's crater, and if they ignore safety, quickly find themselves in trouble or worse. To get a better understanding of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, we're joined today by Ranger Nainoa Keanaaina, a law enforcement ranger who grew up near the park, worked in its backcountry, and now is closely involved with search-and-rescue activities and other tasks to keep visitors safe and getting the most out of their vacation.
USGS scientists have raised the alert level of Kilauea volcano from “yellow” to “orange” after increased earthquake activity was detected at the summit early Wednesday morning. This means that there is a potential threat of an eruption and scientists are closely monitoring the activity. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cosmic Cousins, I have returned to the breathtaking Big Island of Hawai'i, the birthplace of the Cosmic Cousins podcast and the starting point of my astrology career to celebrate 6 years! Just 10 minutes upon my arrival, the powerful and awe-inspiring volcano, Pele, the majestic Kilauea, erupted! This week I was gifted the opportunity to witness the lava bursting from the volcano's Halemaumau crater. Gurgling fountains spewed lava high into air. The raw energy and intensity of the eruption was truly remarkable. The volcano has such immense transformative energy that permeates this sacred land. As I celebrate 6 years of Cosmic Cousins, I find it deeply meaningful that this eruption coincides with this milestone. It serves as a reminder of the incredible lessons, creations, and experiences that have shaped our journey together. Throughout this time, we have learned the importance of community, the power of connection, and the healing energy of nature. The Big Island has been a catalyst for my growth and healing, allowing me to tap into the wisdom of the cosmos and share it with you. It has been a place of inspiration, where the volcanic energy mirrors the creation, passion, and devotion within. I am grateful for the opportunity to be back on this sacred land and reconnecting with both the community and the island that have supported me on this cosmic adventure. As we move forward, I am excited to continue exploring astrology, deepening our connection with the cosmos, and fostering an even stronger sense of community. Thank you, Cosmic Cousins, for joining me on this incredible journey. Your support and presence mean the world to me. Here's to many more years of growth, learning, and connection. ___________________________________ Virgo New Moon I declutter. I harvest. I tend. Virgo New Moon Questions for Reflection: 1. He joins us on the latest episode of the Cosmic Cousins podcast to talk about his journey a self-made artist with a Virgo Moon. A bit about Jason: In 2010, Jason was drawn to Hawai'i on a six-month spiritual quest, near the active volcano on the Big Island, a source of inspiration. Fresh from this journey of heart and soul, he returned to Seattle and created his first body of work Finding Home. Soon after, he joined with creative partner Stephen Stum to launch Stallman Studio in 2012 and began their prolific collaboration. Canvas on Edge, their body of work co-created on Whidbey Island, near Seattle, has been featured in many print and online publications, both nationally and internationally, and is now showing around the world, including in Eternity and Opera Galleries. While Jason continues creating Canvas on Edge pieces he is also continuing his attention to his other bodies of solo work: Excavations. _____________________________________ One of the most rewarding parts of my offering as an astrologer is connecting with students and clients from around the world. Just after Thanksgiving, for the first time in almost 40 years, Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano erupted. It's one of several ongoing eruptions – including Kilauea, also on Hawaii, and Indonesia's Mount Semeru. At just over half the size of the big island of Hawaii, Mauna Loa is the world's biggest active volcano. Today, volcanologist Alison Graettinger talks to Scientist in Residence Regina G. Barber about what makes Mauna Loa's eruption different than Indonesia's and others around the Pacific, and what it reveals about planet Earth.Watch the U.S. Geological Survey's live video of the eruption here.
