Matthew Dow Smith is an American comic book artist and author. He's worked on a range of titles for publishers DC, Marvel, Dark Horse among others including Hellboy, Sandman Mystery Theatre, Dr Who, The X-files Starman, Beasts of the Black Hand and the X-Men. He's also releasing his new work "Johnny Chaos" in weekly installments on Twitter (which you can find via @matthewdowsmith), and has just announced the formation of his own studio Skeleton Tree Media.Matthew was kind enough to spare some to chat about many things including his path to geekdom, what would be a good starting point for the Cthulhu mythos for a new fan, why he's started his own creative studio now and the clever logic behind why he's releasing Johnny Chaos the way he is. We also discuss the current state of accountability in the comic book industry and why there needs to be increased representation. Plus we also geek out extensively over Doctor Who - you were warned.
J.M. DeMatteis joins Creator Talks to tease us about his upcoming Star Trek one-shot Hell's Mirror available March 18th through IDW. We learn about working series artist Matthew Dow Smith and what else may be on the horizon for these two creators. J.M. shares his throughs about the Original Star Trek Series and seeing the great William Shatner perform at a Star Trek convention. Also discussed is J.M.'s CW Seed animated story Deathstroke "Knights and Dragons" and his upcoming animated adaptation of Superman: Red Son. Get J.M.'s thoughts on writing characters with whom he was not initially familiar and how that challenge further developed his writing skills. George Thoroughgood, Valeria Bertinelli and Aubrey Plaza are three of Delaware’s own who work in the arts. Being added to that list beginning in March is writer Lela Gwenn. She is publishing her first book though Dark Horse Comics titled Bad Luck Chuck. It is the story of Charlene who was born with the ability to create bad luck for people and decides to monetize that ability. This is when her luck turns takes a turn for the worse. Lela describes the book as a “slapstick noir”, a mix of comedy and drama. The title is being released March 27th with a final order cut off of March 4th. The amazing creative roster on the mini-series includes Matthew Dow Smith on art, Kelly Fitzpatrick on colors and Frank Cvetkovic on letters. How did Lela’s story evolve from just a few pages into a four issues series? Lela explains how networking at comic cons ultimately led to a publishing deal for Bad Luck Chuck. Lela also discusses a few important causes that provide support to those suffering from physical and emotional pain. She has dealt with one issue in particular that affects over 200,000 women in the U.S. every year. She shares her own struggle with this condition during our interview. Tony becomes a Vice Cop with the Philadelphia Police Department, and when on assignment, trying to find people smuggling chicken, he enters a Black Market Chicken Restaurant on invitation from the FDA. He has a bowl of chicken soup only to find he gets a psychic impression of the cook killing people and then putting them into the soup. He goes to bust the cook, only for the cook to kill himself outside the restaurant. Chu then eats the cook to find out the names of the rest of the victims. He is fired from his job with the Philadelphia PD and gets hired on to the FDA by an agent named Mason Savoy, who is also a cibopath.
