Cattle Industry News Trump's Tariffs Trigger Chinese Retaliation, Impacting U.S. Meat Exports President Donald Trump ordered new tariffs on Chinese goods, raising total duties to 104% starting Wednesday in response to China's retaliation against earlier U.S. measures. In return, China imposed steep tariffs on U.S. meat—56% on beef and 81% on pork—effective Thursday, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. This move threatens a major market, as China and Hong Kong were the third-largest U.S. pork buyers at $1.14 billion and the second-largest for beef at nearly $2 billion last year. Meanwhile, Mexico—America's top pork buyer—has not yet responded to separate U.S. tariffs outside the USMCA agreement. Latest Beef Industry News Strike Shuts Ports On East, Gulf Coasts Agricultural exports screeched to a halt Tuesday as dock workers walking off the job on the East and Gulf coasts, after the International Longshoremen's Association's contract expired Tuesday at midnight. The poultry industry — concentrated in southeastern states and still reeling from Hurricane Helene — could be hardest hit in the meat sector, but extended port closures would quickly be felt nationwide, with 13% of beef, 15% of poultry, and 25% of pork production exported annually. Erin Borror, U.S. Meat Export Federation vice president for economic analysis, said that the strike-hit Eastern and Southern ports are responsible for at least $100 million a week worth of pork and beef exports, with a typically faster pace of outbound shipments in the fourth quarter. Senators Introduce Bill To Amend Federal Meat Inspection Act U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., along with Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., introduced the Livestock Owned by Communities to Advance Local (LOCAL) Foods Act. The legislation aims to amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 to support small-scale meat producers in rural areas by updating the "personal-use exemption." The bill would allow consumers to purchase live animals from local producers and designate agents for slaughter and processing, easing bottlenecks caused by the limited number of USDA-inspected slaughterhouses. The move is intended to help small farmers avoid delays and continue providing locally sourced food to their communities. Welch said the legislation would cut through regulations that favor large-scale operations, ensuring small producers remain competitive. The bill is supported by several farming organizations, including the Farm Action Fund and the National Family Farm Coalition, as a way to boost local food access and protect farmers' rights to sell directly to consumers. Cheap Burgers Becoming Harder To Find According to a report from Bloomberg, the rising cost of beef is pushing burgers out of reach for many Americans, as the price of fast food continues to climb. In the second quarter of 2024, the average fast-food burger cost $8.41, a 16% increase from five years ago, according to Technomic's Ignite Menu data. Even McDonald's has seen prices surge, with a Big Mac averaging $5.29 — up 21% since 2019. The report said the root of the issue lies in dwindling cattle numbers, which hit a 73-year low in early 2024. Severe droughts, beginning in 2020, have forced ranchers to reduce herds, further driving up prices. While recent rainfall has improved conditions, higher interest rates and operating costs have made it too expensive for ranchers to rebuild herds quickly. Beef prices are expected to rise until at least 2026, with long-term challenges posed by climate change. Fast-food chains are responding with promotions to attract customers, but experts predict that the days of dollar-menu burgers are largely behind us. Consumers may need to adjust to beef becoming a pricier delicacy, similar to pre-McDonald's times, as the cattle industry faces ongoing environmental and economic hurdles. Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News Export Federation Warns Of Port Strike Impacts Of Beef Exports are heavily dependent on the Eastern ports threatened by an Oct. 1 strike deadline, but the ramifications of a halt in shipments would be serious for beef and pork industries, too, the U.S. Meat Export Federation warned late last week. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said, “The three big West Coast ports are the leading outlets for U.S. beef and pork exports. That doesn't mean the East and Gulf coast isn't important. If we look at total waterborne exports of pork, about 45% of those go through the East and Gulf coast ports, and beef side about 30% of the waterborne exports.” He pointed in particular to “quite a high percentage of very high value chilled beef that goes out from the East Coast in particular for destinations like Europe and the Middle East. He said we can't overstate the importance of the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. Even though the West Coast is larger, still a very significant quantity is exported through the East and Gulf coasts. Halstrom said any halt in port activity “will back up the supply chain immediately,: and redirecting meat exports to the West Coast is “by no means a long-term solution at all,” because a vast flow of grain and non-farm commodities and goods would also be left without port capacity. He said we're challenged to export all of our products today using all the ports, so we cannot afford a shutdown in any part of the supply chain. Plant Based Diets Are More Expensive Originally posted in Alt-Meat and then again in MeatlingPlace.Com, consuming a plant-based diet that is nutritionally equivalent to one that includes animal proteins is “considerably” (34% to 45%) more expensive than an omnivorous diet, putting numbers to one complaint that's been voiced about plant-based diets for years, according to new research from New Zealand's Massey University. As published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition,” the article reviews recent modeling studies using Linear Programming to determine the respective roles of animal- and plant-sourced foods in developing a least-cost diet in the United States and New Zealand. The abstract said that “In both economies, least-cost diets were found to include animal-based foods, such as milk, eggs, fish and seafood, to meet the energy and nutrient requirements of healthy adults at the lowest retail cost. The article said , the costliest culprits in transitioning from an animal- and plant-containing least-cost diet to a plant-only based least-cost diet are mostly vitamins and minerals. In conclusion, “Modeling of least-cost diets that consist exclusively of plant-based foods is feasible, but at a higher daily diet cost, and these diets are often close to limiting several key nutrients. 2024 Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour, Hamburg, New York The Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour is coming to Hamburg, New York and surrounding states October 25 - 26 at the Agriculture Discovery Center In Hamburg, New York. Public Health Officials Confirm Four More HPAI Cases In Humans An update on the Avian Flu, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this past weekend confirmed that four workers at a poultry farm in northeast Colorado were infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The agency confirmed that four of the workers who were culling birds after an HPAI outbreak at the commercial egg-laying operation tested positive for HPAI, and a fifth employee is presumed HPAI-positive as the agency waits for samples to be processed. The CDC is investigating whether the workers properly used recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) and will decide whether guidance adjustments to protect poultry farm employees are warranted. Most human cases of HPAI infection involved people who were not wearing recommended PPE when working with infected birds, CDC noted. The agency also is analyzing the virus sequences from the outbreak in order to determine if a change in the risk assessment should be launched. HPAI infections in humans have been confirmed in three U.S. states since March. Meanwhile, USDA reported that an estimated 152 dairy cattle herds in at least 10 states tested positive for HPAI infections so far this year. US Beef Exports Exceeded $900 Million In May Shipments of beef from the United States to foreign markets hit an 11-month high in May in dollar terms, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. The value of beef exports was 3% higher than the same month a year ago and the highest mark since June 2023. For the first five months of 2024, the U.S. beef industry exports were worth $4.29 billion, 5% ahead of the same period in 2023. Calculated per head of fed slaughter, export value in May was $410.94, up 3% from May 2023. The U.S. Meat Export Federation said that Japan, Taiwan and the ASEAN region showed strong demand for U.S. beef in May, as well as Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean. Equine Infectious Anemia confirmed in Nebraska horse The Nebraska Department of Agriculture July 4 announced a confirmed case of equine infectious anemia in a horse located in Colfax County. This is the first confirmed case of EIA since 2013 in the state. NDA staff are working with the owner and local veterinarian to monitor potentially exposed horses. The infected horse is currently quarantined and will be released once state regulations are met. Spread by blood-to-blood contact, EIA is an incurable, infectious viral disease and can be transmitted from an infected equine to an uninfected equine by blood-feeding insects such as horseflies, deer flies, or stable flies, and by people using contaminated medical equipment, such as needles, syringes, and IV sets. There are currently no USDA-approved vaccines for EIA. Equine owners can do a number of things to help protect their animals, and this includes things like implementing insect controls, keeping stables and facilities clean, eliminating standing water, using one needle per horse, separating infected equine from the healthy, and never using blood-contaminated medical equipment.
