We connect with Karthee Madasamay of MFV partners, a deep tech VC firm that was an early investor in Agility Robotics (one of the largest manufacturers of humanoid robots), to learn more about the current capabilities of humanoids, their cost and maintenance requirements, and how far off we are from seeing humanoids become more commonplace in manufacturing environments.

In this episode, Hall welcomes Karthee Madasamy of MFV Partners. MFV Partners' approach is to back visionary entrepreneurs developing deep technologies and solutions that disrupt traditional verticals and ecosystems across automotive, manufacturing, retail, agriculture and knowledge services. Karthee has been a VC investor for 15 years, following a career as an entrepreneur with an electrical engineering background. Karthee talks about how technology is disrupting some of the established traditional industries like automotive and agriculture and provides great advice for investors interested in the deep tech space. He discusses the pitfalls of commercialization, and how important it is to think through before you dive in. Karthee emphasizes that startups and investors need to understand how solving a problem in science or engineering will ultimately lead to a product and customer. In addition, Karthee talks about the evolution of investing in the deep tech space, and how it is often focused on the later stages. He also talks about some of the companies that MFV has worked with, as well as some of the challenges particular to the deep tech space. Finally, Hall and Karthee discuss the state of capital availability in a general sense, and what that might mean for future innovation.

Tom Portesy has been president of MFV Expositions for more than 18 years, and added CEO to his title in 2009. With more than 25 years of global sales and executive management experience, Tom oversees the team that produces the three leading franchise events in the U.S., and is active in many International franchise events operated by MFV Expositions or strategic partners. Working closely with the International Franchise Association and many franchise associations around the world, Tom has participated as a panelist and moderator in countless educational seminars and symposia. Previously, Tom owned an advertising and PR firm and was a founder and Group VP of an instant printing franchise. He has been married for over 33 years and has 4 children. Key Takeaways: [0:27] Today’s episode is brought to you by Franchise 5! The key to long-term success is through smart, strategic growth. To learn more about this program, head over to FranchiseEuphoria.com/Franchise5. [0:58] Our episode today features Tom Portesy, president and CEO of MFV Expositions. Tom leads his team in producing the premier franchise events in the U.S. [4:44] Before he was in expositions, Tom was involved with a printing franchise, a business that sold instant printing and advertising specialties. They quickly learned it was a duplicatable model and within a few years had 150 units in the U.S. [6:56] MFV is a trade show company based in New Jersey that produces four U.S. shows a year and numerous other shows internationally. [9:45] Expos are not just about shaking hands and making connections. They also showcase various speakers and host seminars with a variety of topics that cover all aspects of franchising. [11:25] The biggest misnomer that people think about franchising is that it’s all about food and becoming a millionaire. People would be shocked to know franchising touches every industry. [13:00] Just because something is considered the “hottest” franchise, it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what you should want to buy into. [13:55] Becoming a franchisee is not necessarily for everybody. A franchisee is a certain type of entrepreneur who is ready to work hard but they want the proven system. [16:00] Franchisees can still have creative liberties, but you have to prove yourself to the franchisor before your ideas will be heard. [16:50] Not every business makes for a good franchise. A good franchise system offers a good product/service that can be delivered by nearly anyone. [20:45] A good franchisor will make working capital part of your investment. If they don’t – run. [22:10] The International Franchise Expo is coming up in New York this summer (May 31 – June 2). If you want to attend as a guest or have a booth, go to www.ifeinfo.com. [23:39] Additionally, IFE is conducting a contest where you could win up to $25,000 to start your own franchise, plus a free trip for two to attend the expo. To learn more, head over to www.ifeinfo.com/franchiseme. [24:38] Thanks again for listening, and please, reach out to Josh anytime through email at josh@indyfranchiselaw.com. Thirty-nine, yet also two! Nick and Alastair cover two TV shows beginning with O and ending in Black for the second time (see also: MFV #10), but first, Alastair's seen Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle, a serious documentary about the housing crisis, while Nick's read some Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye comics. Then it's down to business with the start of Orange Is The New Black season 5 (9:55), followed by a big look back at the whole of American Gods season 1 (27:18) and a little check-in with the first episode of Orphan Black's final season (43:26). Last but definitely not least, Nick recommends Quantum & Woody (55:17) by Christopher Priest and Mark Bright, the mismatched-buddy-superhero comic that influenced much of his style, taste and sense of humour. Will Alastair dig it?
Thirty six more chances to win! This fortnight, Nick finally watches premium telly classic Deadwood, while Alastair saw Bunch of Kunst, a documentary film about his beloved Sleaford Mods. Also: how has their Mod listening progressed since the album review in MFV #31? Most excitingly, though, it's Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 (8:10), the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film of the year! After that, almost as anticipated, it's the first episode of American Gods (23:57), Bryan Fuller's weirdly angled TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel. Next, Nick's taste in music takes its turn for a pasting, as they review new Gorillaz album Humanz (33:58). Lastly, a truly inevitable recommendation section, as Alastair pitches some classic Doctor Who (47:20) - specifically, the Tom Baker story Genesis of the Daleks.
Thirty five, dirty lies! The recommendations section is a little recycled this time, as Nick talks the second book of Alan Moore's Jerusalem (last mentioned in MFV #30) and Alastair revisits Spaceship now it's up on BFI Player (fully reviewed in MFV #18). But it's on to new frontiers after that, as Doctor Who (6:10) starts its first new series since the podcast began! And then The Fast And The Furious 8 (23:09), Nick's first ever encounter with this ridiculous franchise! Including a philosophical diversion as Alastair starts to wonder about how to review blockbusters! And then another callback with the podcast's third Better Call Saul (39:06) segment to mark the start of season three. (Previously: MFV #2 and MFV #6.) Lastly, but most importantly, what did Alastair think of Ultimate Spider-Man (50:09) by Brian Micheal Bendis and Mark Bagley, the favourite Spider-Man comic of Nick, a massive Spider-Man fan?
The big three-one! Moving into the thirties with good range, as Nick and Alastair start with brief chat about the poetry of Kate Tempest and Archie-murder series Riverdale. Then it's on to new movie Elle (9:19) which, for anyone sensitive about such content, means talking a fair bit about the film's handling of rape. If you'd rather not listen, you can skip to 25:44 and the album English Tapas by Sleaford Mods, a band Nick hadn't previously heard. Lastly, Alastair's recommendation: Heat (38:46), a 1995 crime epic with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. If you're wondering why there's only three items this episode - the fourth for the fortnight was in MFV #30, an off-schedule special where we talked Logan with guest Chris Brosnahan. It was fun, scroll back in your feed and check it out.
Twenty-fifth podcast - would be a giant-sized special if this were a 90s comic! (Yes, Nick writes these blurbs, how did you guess?) Nick and Alastair are back from the holiday season to talk about things they've seen on their travels, such as Revolting Rhymes, The Eagle Huntress and Inside Number Nine! In our first Steven-Moffat-run TV show of the fortnight, we're covering the start of Sherlock series 4 (5:02), as we ask: how much crime is enough? Full spoilers here, by the way. Whereas we're a bit more sparing with the spoils in our talk about The OA (21:36), a strange new Netflix sci-fi mystery - detail-free thoughts for a while, finally plunging into total ending details at 34:31. Then back to Moffatland for the Doctor Who Christmas special (44:15) - fortunately, we're releasing this on the twelfth day of Christmas so narrowly avoid suffering a curse. Lastly, back in MFV #23, Nick recommended Alastair the first volume of JLA by Grant Morrison and Howard Porter (55:05) - will this straight action-superhero comic be a step too far?
Only took twenty-four podcasts, but Nick and Alastair are finally in the same room for this bonus year-in-review episode! They attempt to talk down 2016 as a year in film and television, starting with a general chat about movies lately (1:19) before moving on to each listing their top five films covered in 2016 and negotiating them into a unified MFV top 3 without coming to blows (12:48). And if that wasn't enough, they do the same for TV - a little broad discussion (27:07), followed by chart listings (39:05). Finally, needing a little mutual back-slapping after all that controversy, they each give their favourites of the other's 2016's recommendations (59:55). All that and the first ever live incident of the Moderate Fantasy Violence drinking game!
Twenty-three podcasts, just in time for the twenty-fifth of December! It's nearly Christmas, and to celebrate, Nick and Alastair have seen An Inspector Calls and the Supergirl/Flash/Arrow/Legends of Tomorrow crossover. Neither of which are particularly festive. Oh well. But we have at least got a review of new mega-film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (5:42). Can this latest spin-off justify its own existence, or is it a Star War too far? Next up, a rare MFV complete disagreement as both our heroes have seen Amazon's Philip K. Dick adaptation The Man In The High Castle (22:48), but only one of them likes it much. Which host is the Nazi sympathiser? You'll have to listen to find out. We're also taking a look at Nate Parker's new film The Birth Of A Nation (42:04), chronicling the 1831 slave rebellion of Nat Turner. Then we reach a seasonal feature at last, as Nick finally watches Die Hard (53:10). Some say it's the best Christmas movie ever. Does he agree? Is it even a Christmas movie at all? Rest assured, this will be discussed.
Twenty-two episodes of our podcast and somehow 2016 is still going! This fortnight, both of us went on London outings, Nick to the SMASH comics-chat event run by the London Graphic Novel Network and Alastair to the BFI's Black Star season. (We also both recommend the Kraken podcast, if you like podcasts.) Moving on, in an MFV first, we talk about a whole novel! Specifically: The Hanging Tree (5:41), the latest Rivers of London book by Ben Aaronovitch, bringing Peter Grant back for another magical mystery. We also watch the first three episodes of The Grand Tour (21:05), a new motoring/banter hybrid from Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May on Amazon Prime. Next, because we love Doctor Who and related media, we revisit teen-focused spin-off Class (37:18) now the first series is over, to see how it ended up. And yes, to justify covering it a second time, we'll need to include some extreme spoilers. Also Nick complaining a lot about the Shadow Kin. Finally, Alastair recommends Taxi Driver (54:59) directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, a classic of modern cinema that Nick, unsurprisingly, has never seen.
Episode twenty-one! The podcast comes of age everywhere, just in time for the world to basically collapse. Alastair matches the mood with Hypernormalisation, a new documentary from Adam Curtis, while Nick is escaping into a surreal superhero dream with Grant Morrison and Richard Case's Doom Patrol run. Forcing ourselves into the present day, we take on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (6:45), a new film set in the past of the Harry Potter universe. To help us get to grips with this, we bring in blogger, booktuber and Potter-lover Claire Rousseau, last seen discussing Harry Potter And The Cursed Child with us in MFV #13. This leads to some continuity deep dives and, yes, EXTREME SPOILERS for the film, right from the get-go. If you enjoy Claire's appearance here, you can get more from her at ClaireRousseau.com, @ClaireRousseau on Twitter, or you can find her booktube channel by searching her name on YouTube. We've also got a chat about Train To Busan (50:47), a Korean zombie film aiming to change the way we all see train travel, and, on Nick's recommendation, we look at Chew (62:59), the recently-concluded hit comic about food and flesh-eating, by John Layman and Rob Guillory.
It's our thirteenth episode! We've done this for a whole half-year! What better way to mark the occasion than a massive batch of trailers from San Diego Comic Con and the third Sharknado movie? We've also got our first ever guest on the show - we're talking Harry Potter And The Cursed Child (6:47). Nick saw the play but Alastair didn't, so booktuber and mega-Potter-fan Claire Rousseau is here to tell us her feelings. There's a quick no-plot-details opinion-summary at the start, then anyone avoiding spoilers should jump to 46:35, where Nick and Alastair review Star Trek Beyond in the regular MFV way. If you enjoy Claire's appearance, you can find her talking about books on YouTube by searching her name, or at ClaireRousseau.com or @ClaireRousseau on Twitter. And finally, Nick recommends Alastair the video-game-folk-music of Rebecca Mayes (58:29). Is it his sort of thing, or are we headed for another Lebowski-esque clash?
How To Buy A Franchise Show | Dr. John Hayes provides insight on how to buy and operate a franchise
At the end of the 2016 International Franchise Expo (IFE), Dr. John Hayes interviewed Tom Portesy, president and CEO of MFV Exhibitions, producer of the IFE. MFV also owns FranchiseExpo.com, a portal that includes many franchise opportunities and a variety of resources for people who want to buy a franchise.
"Our business has morphed into attendees who have done research and are on step 3. They’ve cleared a number of different hurdles before they get to one of our franchise expos. They’ve done so much research, they’ve talked to franchisors, they’ve looked at some of the costs and industries, and are really in a different mindset by the time they attend an expo. They’re way more educated. It’s the biggest comment we hear time and time again, that the quality of the attendees at these shows is just off the charts. It’s so much different than it was 10 years ago." - Tom Portesy, CEO, MFV Expositions, when asked how the internet has changed how people today research franchise opportunities. This week on Franchise Today, co-hosts, Stan Friedman and Paul Segreto discuss the world of exploring franchise opportunities with their guest, Tom Portesy, CEO of MFV Expositions. Just ahead of Franchise Expo South in Houston, TX, an event produced by MFV with the International Franchise Association, Tom shares his perspective on how individuals have become more educated in the process of researching franchise brands and how the internet has changed the process from just a short ten years ago. Franchise Today airs LIVE Wednesdays at 11AM CT / 12PM ET with on-demand access on iTunes.
NFL veteran Michael Stone and Franchise Today co-host/franchise industry veteran Stan Friedman, co-founders of (PAFI) The Professional Athlete Franchise Initiative, now in it's 7th year, will talk with Franchise Today co-host, Paul Segreto about recent athlete/franchisee successes and what’s on the horizon at PAFI. Join us as we discuss how franchisors, athletes and suppliers have all come together to successfully advance the business model of pro athletes in franchising. Tune in as we discuss how up and coming, twilight year and even retired veterans of the court or field can trade in their play books for Ops. Manuals and keep producing wealth and legacy through franchising. FRANCHISING: the ONLY game these athletes play, that NEVER GOES OUT OF SEASON! In addition, Mike and Stan will preview some new ideas on the horizon that PAFI is exploring with Expos like those produced by MFV, Franchise Update’s Multi-Unit Conference and of course, PAFI’s own 7th Annual Franchise Summit during the spring of 2016, in Atlanta. Franchise Today airs LIVE Wednesdays at 11AM CT / 12PM ET with on-demand access on iTunes.
