From leading covert counter-terrorism operations for the British military for two decades to becoming the fastest Briton to solo row the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge – achieving the 3000-mile crossing from San Sebastian in the Canary Islands to Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua in just 46 days – Mike Bates knows a thing or two about performing under pressure.Whether the enemy was a Taliban insurgent in the middle of Afghanistan or a 40-foot wave in the middle of the night, Bates's preparedness and resilience has empowered him to rise to every challenge.Yet not even men like Mike, who has more motivation and determination than most of us can imagine, can do it alone. That's why after his distinguished military career and fresh from his endurance challenge heroics he co-founded NXT45, an innovative health, performance and wellbeing company dedicated to supporting men through midlife.More than just an events and community-building company, Bates wants NXT45 to be more like a movement, helping men navigate the often tumultuous transition from the first half of their lives to the second. The name NXT45 signifies this shift, focusing on the next 45 years and beyond. For many men the first half of their life is driven by testosterone-fuelled pursuits such as power, ambition, money and success. Yet as men approach middle age, these goals often shift towards more family-oriented values like support, community and mentorship. Navigating this shift successfully, Bates argues, is crucial for your long-term health and happiness. In our exclusive Unfiltered interview, Bates sheds light on why understanding this transition will empower men to take back control of their lives and find new purpose and meaning. Knowledge, communication and support, he says, will also prevent them descending into a pit of despair and depression as they contemplate their lost youth and the inevitable march towards their own mortality. One of the most compelling aspects of Bates's message is his belief in the power of community, something many men at all stages of their life don't feel or experience. Through NXT45 he aims to foster environments where men can connect, share experiences and support each other. This sense of camaraderie and mutual support, an essential asset in the military, can be a lifeline for those struggling with midlife transitions.Bates's unique perspective, shaped by his diverse and hair-raising experiences, makes him a compelling voice for men approaching middle age. His blend of practical advice, motivational insights and personal anecdotes can provide you with the blueprint for navigating your midlife with grace and purpose. For exclusive access to all Unfiltered's video interviews, features and documentaries visit https://unfilteredonline.com/Get in touch in the comments below or talk to us on:Email: editorial@unfilteredonline.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGSV7XVaBYUYq5YidLI12owInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/unfiltered.extraTwitter/X: https://twitter.com/UnfilteredExtra

In this podcast Rach & John talk to Former Counter Terrorism Covert Operations Leader and HUMINT specialist turned Entrepreneur and Solo Ocean Rower – Mike Bates. Born and raised in Doncaster, Mike carved out a career that most boys would dream of. Spending years undercover as a human intelligence specialist, covert counter-terrorism operations leader and commando in the Royal Marines. Mike was the real-life James Bond. But all those years spent undercover, Mike didn't know who he really was. Until he undertook the biggest challenge of his life - becoming the fastest British person to complete the ‘The World's Toughest Row' solo in a little over 46 days. Rooted in his personal experiences of fighting terrorists, tackling mother nature at her most powerful and attaining his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mike shares his unique experiences to provide a powerful and credible perspective on resilience, leadership, humility and overcoming adversity. Leadership Essentials Courage – to challenge the status quo, to do things differently, to admit you are wrong. Clarity - of mission. The mission needs to be absolutely clear. Clarity of communication with no doubt in any communication what you are trying to do and say. Clarity about the achievement and praising staff. Clarity in the culture of the organisation you are trying to create. Credibility – this is different from experience. It's integrity, care and empathy. The ability of a leader to inspire others to follow you. Get in touch with Mike: Links to Mike Bates on: LinkedIn, Instagram Or email Mike at: mikebatesofficial@gmail.com

Mike Bates is an ex-Royal Marine and also worked undercover in human intelligence for the MoD where he was an ops leader. Since leaving he has become a successful business owner after opening Gracie Barra Roundhay Leeds, a Jiu Jitsu academy which has seen amazing growth. On top of that he is also about to start the unbelievable challenge of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean (solo) to raise funds for Leeds Children's Hospital. Perhaps his biggest challenge is being a Dad. We sat down to discuss his approach to parenting, how he keeps his two boys motivated and what he's learned from being a parent with children involved in sport. This was one of our favourite conversations with so much to takeaway. You can find out more about Mike and his charity work by visiting: Website https://www.theatlanticgrappler.com/ Instagram https://instagram.com/theatlanticgrappler?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Such an interesting conversation. Mike is currently training to ambark on a solo row across the Atlantic. Is it absolutely insane, and we delve in to the why's and how's in more detail. Look up @theatlanticgrappler on Instagram. This follows a career as a Royal Marines Commando (Going after Saddam, Osama and others), and the Covert Op's and Human Intelligence & Account Handling. He also dispels the myths you read in books or see on the TV! Thanks always Whitson Prestige, Tiny Rebel Brewery and FourFive CBD (FLAP15 for 15% off)

Finally, as we (somewhat) jokingly set Mike off on his journey to help us reach millions of kids uncover their wellbeing, he poignantly reminded us of Peter Block's wisdom: “How do you change the world? One room at a time. Which room? The one you're in.” We're thrilled Mike has joined us in the room that matters the most – the inner “room” of each and every one of us, the room where our spark resides. For this week’s episode I spoke to Gloria and Mike Bates, who are the parents of a murdered soldier named Amanda Gonzales. Amanda had joined the Army and became a cook. She was stationed at the former Army base at Hanau, Germany. She had plans to return to Texas for Christmas to spend the holiday with her parents. She had a surprise for them. She was pregnant and expected to have her baby on Mike and Gloria’s wedding anniversary. The couple was looking forward to becoming grandparents. Unfortunately, this joyous moment would never happen. On November 5, 2001, Amanda was found deceased in her barracks. Someone had beaten and strangled the pregnant mother to be. Instead of coming home for Christmas, Amanda would be coming to be buried. If you know anything about what happened to Amanda, please contact the FBI field office in NY at (212) 384-1000 or you can go to their website at www.fbi.gov/tips. And if you would like more information about Amanda, please visit the family’s FB page at: PFC Amanda Gonzales Memorial Facebook. There is also a reward for $125,000 for tips leading to Amanda's killer. *Video clip provided by KBTX (www.kbtx.com)Please also visit my website for more information about my true crime and paranormal newspaper columns at www.themarcabe.com. Introduction: I had the great pleasure of having Mike Bates on for the first half hour, talking about the Second Amendment Rally in Milton, FL this Saturday, but also a discussion of how Florida went from "The Gun-shine State" that led the way on concealed carry of guns, to the horrendously mistaken belief after the Parkland High School murders, that taking guns from good people, or siezing them from people on a mere accusation, will prevent murderers from murdering. This disconnect is the sole justification of gun control, and it's irrational. Mike stuck around for a bit and was joined by Anthony, Pianki, and then Wendy for her Art Report. 41:00 - Take a look at the Action Radio Art Project on Facebook! Wendy covered how to take part in art festivals today. Look up Kathleen Johnson who covers art festivals in the South. 54:00 - Anthony Nunez gave The Technology Report. Today, how your smart phone is making you dumber... 1:13:30 - This is where I start my rant on the main topic of the show, the omnipotence of District Judges and the exercise and obedience to the unconstitutional power of "Injunction" to overrule any law, decison, order, policy, regulation, or anything from the Legislative or Executive Branches and make them both do what some pissant judge decides on their own. I covered a couple more articles, provided more evidence for my claim, and hashed out with Anthony and Pianki what this all means.
