Joan Blythe is a singer. Francis "Frank" Blythe is a scientist - and Joan's younger sister. They both work at "Mike Fahey's Revolution Lounge" in Boston. The sous chef there doesn't like Frank. Why? And why is there an odd piece of blank paper in the bass player's salad? It will take both Blythe sisters, the whole band, and Joan's boyfriend Warren McAllister - a T-man - to get to the bottom of all of it. We start by remembering a professional friend of mine who we lost this month - Mike Fahey of Kotaku. We talk about how we would be the two press representatives at Atlanta events in the late 2000's and how we helped out each other professionally and personally. We take some comments from the Discord server regarding issues with the Tilt Five AR headset that other people are seeing, as well as some clarifications at how it works. I went to Dragon Con and had a great time - although a lot of people brought home a really bad souvenir. I hosted several panels, including an amazing one with Master Daniel and Carlos Pesina of Mortal Kombat fame. Check it out on YouTube! Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 will be online due to wanting to not hold their event in Florida. Sony has rejected Microsoft's offer to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles for three extra years, calling it inadequate. Then we talk to Rob about him beating my high scores, Dragon Con, and Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Torna il Weekly, anche se in un giorno diverso dal solito e con una coppia diversa dal solito: stavolta Alessandro è in compagnia di Andrea. Apriamo la puntata con Microsoft e Sony che litigano per Call of Duty (03:40). Poi passiamo a una lunga e interessante intervista a Ron Gilbert e Dave Grossman, autori dell'imminente Return to Monkey Island (24:25). Buon ascolto! #42 "You can see the cabbage in it."Roundtable 2017.08.30 It's a slightly experimental show this week, as we try to see what a two-topic episode looks like. Also, Martha defends her love of coleslaw, Stephen still doesn't really like VR, and Mark has almost completely lost his voice.Discuss this week's episode on Reddit in r/gamedev here. There's lots to discuss on today's Splitscreen, starting with some brief chat about Kirk's cool Undertale cover (3:37) and some of the games we've been playing including Mario Kart 8 and Dungeon Keeper (10:23). Then, we dig into the week's news, starting with Nintendo discontinuing the NES Classic (23:44) and selling nearly a million Switches in the United States last month (29:21). We talk about why we're optimistic for Star Wars Battlefront II's campaign (34:10) and then Jason disappears so Kirk can talk to Kotaku staffers Mike Fahey and Heather Alexandra about what makes Nier: Automata so rad (42:59). Finally, Kirk and Jason reconvene to talk about The West Wing and answer a listener question (1:00:47).
One month later, how much has the Switch grown on us? Kirk and Jason go over this week's news including Telltale's CEO departing (12:30) and Mass Effect animators getting harassed (20:06) before assessing the Switch, one month later (36:20). Then they bring on Kotaku's Stephen Totilo (46:22), Gita Jackson (1:00:16), and Mike Fahey (1:10:08) to hear some more Switch thoughts.
Kotaku vet Mike Fahey joins Jason to talk about Final Fantasy XIV, fanservice games, and 7th Dragon III Code VFD. He also tells the story of the time he wasn't allowed to go to the Tokyo Game Show.
Mike Fahey, Michael McWhertor, in the same podcast! That's crazy!! But it's true. And we'll be taking your calls and discussing the fall of gaming.
Continuing our holiday theme, Scott and I reached into our 'epic' spreadsheet of podcast topics to share with your our seasonal leftovers. From dark Disney characters to videogame weapons, these six stories are a little old, but still have a lot of flavor. Join us while we discuss persistent world narcissism, games of the decade, in-game trust, and old-school medallions. As always, you can find all these stories in the show notes. Some discussion starters: - How can lies and mistrust be implemented in a videogame? - How do you feel about collector's editions? How do you flaunt your 'geek' pride? - Epic Mickey: How much do you trust Warren Spector really? - What are the most influential games of the decade? - How do we implement persistent worlds in the most painless way possible?Show notes:- Run time: 30 min 36 sec- "Games of the Decade: An Introduction" by Mitch Krpata, via Insult Swordfighting - "Design of a Decade" by Steve Gaynor, via Fullbright - Epic Mickey details via Game Informer - Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition via Joystiq - "Dear persistent worlds: you make me feel bad" by Andrew, via Charge Shot!!! - "Inside the Video Game Weapon Replica Business" by Mike Fahey, via Kotaku - "Fear and Mistrust in Videogames" by Scott Sharkey, via 1Up- Music provided by Brad Sucks
Animals have a long history in video games, and continue to play important parts in the most recent titles. This week, we happened upon an article detailing the story of a high school student offended by the treatment of dogs in Call of Duty: World at War. Her efforts to petition Activision to change its ways got us thinking about how and why games are criticized, as well as the larger role of animals in games. Although we have a bit of fun at the article's expense, it is a useful tool for examining how people react to violent games, how different forms of violence are interpreted, and how animals fit in to the medium as whole. As always, we love hearing your responses to both the story and the podcast, so feel free to send us an email or jump in on the comments! Some discussion starters:- What memorable animal appearances can you think of? What role did the animals play in the game?- While we were not exactly optimistic about Lucci's chances of getting Activision's attention, her efforts raise a good point: how should people display their disagreement with publishers and developers? Petitions? Essays? Response games (like the PETA example)? Voting with one's wallet?- To what degree does the incorporation of animals succeed in games, and how would you like to see it improved? To listen to the podcast: - Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here. Additionally, here is the stand-alone feed. - Listen to the podcast in your browser by left-clicking the title.
