Host: Isaretta Riley, MD, MPH Guest: Nicola A. Hanania, MD, MS, FCCP Guest: Jay Peters, MD A recent study assessing the impact of implicit bias on uncontrolled asthma treatment found that a patient's identity and socioeconomic status can unintentionally influence a physician's decision-making, impacting the quality of care. Additionally, a critical gap exists in clinician awareness and implementation of health equity practices, which play a key role in mitigating these unintended consequences. That's why Drs. Isaretta Riley, Nicola Hanania, and Jay Peters come together to explore the latest research on unconscious bias in asthma treatment and provide recommendations for more equitable care. Dr. Riley is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina; Dr. Hanania is a Professor of Pulmonary Medicine and the Director of Airways Clinical Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas; and Dr. Peters is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Texas, San Antonio. This week is all about classic sitcom shenanigans as we devote an entire episode to the state of the network sitcom (plus our usual Netflocalypse-of-the-Week). We'll investigate the mysterious resurgence of network sitcoms that suddenly seem to be haunting the streaming landscape with our review of one of last season's most successful new shows: The CBS comedy Ghosts. But don't look behind you, because there's another show looming in the shadows this week… and it's the BBC's Ghosts (boo!). We're comparing the original UK pilot with the US remake and picking apart the network sitcom like it's a rotting corpse (which we swear it isn't!). And if that's not enough sitcom excitement we're continuing the conversation with a Rewind Review of Abbott Elementary's excellent season finale! We'll discuss our hopes are dreams for the show's next season and share some exciting news (but you'll have to attend class to learn all about it). ———

This week we're force-ing ourselves to see both the light and dark sides of the newest Star Wars series: Obi-Wan Kenobi (like Ewan McGregor, we are cranky old dad-types now and our jokes will reflect that). We're reviewing the first four episodes and making our predictions for the final two! We'll take a look at the “Marvel-ization” of the Star Wars universe that's accelerated since the launch of Disney+ (try to guess how many Star Wars shows are currently in development!) and we'll try to answer this week's big questions from the streaming universe. Questions like… Is it cake? What is “Breaking News” anyway? Wait, Premier League Cricket is worth how much? Do you think J.J. Abrams will take our notes about his sci-fi epic Demimonde and give Demi Moore the Emmy she deserves?? No really, is it cake??! And can Netflix pivot to blockbuster movies? In this economy?!?!! ———

We're hitting the high seas this week as we cruise through the entire first season of the queer pirate rom com we didn't know we needed: Our Flag Means Death. But first: Join us as we sail into stormy weather with Netflix's salty subscriber numbers, search for the treasure buried in the latest video game adaptations, voyage to the far off land of the Amazon (dot-com), and accidentally deliver a eulogy for CNN+ before scattering the young streamer's ashes into the vast ocean of entertainment. ———

You've got questions about The Thing About Pam and we've got… even more questions! Those questions include: Are we terrible people for slurping down every second of this show like it's a giant generic fountain soda in the clutches of Renée Zellweger‘s fat-suit-clad hands? How should we feel about the complicated ethics of a show— based on a podcast based on an episode of Dateline— that treats the real-life murder at the center of the story like the punchline of a joke? And do the tonal similarities to Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber mean that Renée Zellweger is the Joseph Gordon-Levitt of network television?? Listen in as we grapple with these existential questions, catch up on the latest streaming news, and ponder the future of TV shows based on video games. Plus: There's a new comedy streaming on… Grindr? Sure, why not! ———

Roblox is one of the fastest growing games in the world right now. But depending on who you ask, some would say it's more than a game. Developers of Roblox say the app is more focused on creating “experiences” than “games.” The Verge's Jay Peters (@jaypeters) joins Rani Molla to help explain what that means. EPIC WIN (OR FAIL): It has been a few weeks of high drama in the world of video games as Epic––the company behind Fortnite and the Unreal Engine––sued Apple after Apple delisted Fortnite from its storefront when Epic violated its terms of service as a developer. It's a complicated, convoluted issue with a lot of far-reaching and severe consequences for those who don't really have a dog in this fight––the players (not to mention the impact it could have on smaller indie developers). The Writership Podcast Editing Tips For Fiction Authors

In this episode, Certified Story Grid Editors Leslie Watts and Jay Peters critique the beginning of “What Lives Beneath,” a short story by A.V. Herzberg. The author's synopsis for the story suggests that the main genre could be Obsession Love Story or Horror. Leslie and Jay talk about how those genres can be translated into story values (in other words, the external change that happens from the beginning to the end of the story). Then they analyze the scene in the submission, including how the scene value changes from beginning to end. Then they discuss ways to strengthen the scene by bringing the value shift into closer alignment with the overall story. This week's editorial mission challenges you to compare the value shifts in your scene to see how they relate to your global story.

Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: Product managers and innovators want more influence in an organization so they can better create value for customers. Without influence, we can’t build support for our ideas and convince others to help us. Influence also allows us to be more strategic in our work, which is the same thing executive leaders want from product management. When I share that this podcast and my training helps product managers become product masters, increasing influence is the key factor involved for the product manager. Part of the journey to mastery is thinking more strategically and more in terms of value not only to customers but to the organization as a whole. This means moving from involvement in the design of products to involvement in the design of businesses. And that is exactly what today’s guest is here to talk with us about — thinking of business design through the lens of product management and innovation. My guest is Jay Peters, Managing Director for PARK USA. PARK is one of the leading experts in the management of design and innovation. They consult, coach and educate on how to maximize the value of design. Product managers and innovators learn about four areas of Design Value from the interview: More profit,More brand equity,More innovation, andFaster change.
