July 19, 1980. Three young boxers are circling a track in front of thousands of people in downtown Moscow. Alberto Mercado, Jose Molina, and Luis Pizarro have found themselves as the sole representatives of Puerto Rico in this year's controversial Summer Olympic Games. The young men are here in defiance of their own nation's government and the government of the United States. The U.S. and 64 other countries are boycotting the Summer Olympics this year. The decision is meant to disavow the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan the year before. Puerto Rico is initially expected to boycott too, as an American territory. But they don't.Today, why do these three boxers make the controversial choice to go compete behind the Iron Curtain? And is it worth the risk to defy the United States? Special thanks to Bijan Stephen and the Eclipsed podcast team. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In a response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the US, along with more than 60 other countries, boycotted the Olympics. Yet three Puerto Rican boxers refused to allow politics to stand in their way of their athletic ambitions. In today's episode, Ben, Noel and Max welcome Bijan Stephen and Layne Gerbig, the creators of the Eclipsed podcast, to learn what led them to create this show -- and what the 1980 Olympics can teach us about the larger context of history. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's January 18th. This day in 1980, a group of Texas oil billionaires were in the middle of a scheme to drive up the worldwide price of silver. This would culminate in a few months later on what came to be known as “Silver Thursday,” when their speculation collapsed and sent worldwide markets into chaos. Jody, Niki, and Kellie are joined by Bijan Stephen, host of the podcast “Eclipsed,” which is currently running a four-part series on the Hunt brothers and Silver Thursday. Sometimes the most interesting stories from history aren't the ones we expect, it's the stories that got lost. Eclipsed is a new weekly narrative history show from Campside Media. Hosted by writer Bijan Stephen, each episode of Eclipsed features a story hidden in the shadows of a major historical event. Lakes disappear, sailors cry, and pop stars go into battle on this season of Eclipsed.

Welcome to the world of animated avatar streamers & Influencers. From the dawn of their creation in Japan with Tokimeki Memorial, a video game that created one of the first VTubers, to Code Miko, a current Twitch streamer who is pushing the bounds of what it means to be a VTuber and constantly breaking the rules to do it, we're exploring the evolution of these VTubers. And with it, the discovery that sometimes people's identities are sometimes more important as avatars than their real life identities.
Piracy. You know you've done it! And on this episode, we're exposing you as we talk about two stories that highlight the wild wild west of the early bit torrent days. In story #1, Saige and Harry cover Kim Dotcom, the mega personality behind Mega Upload. And in Story #2, Rowan and Bijan discuss KickassTorrents, a bit torrent website that became famous for the US Justice Department going after its founder Artem Vaulin, his trial on copyright infringement, and his travails in Poland. (edited) [9:13 PM]
On this episode we're talking about our favorite memes ever… and a few we made (and by “we” we mean Harry)
Harambe, DogeCoin, Rebecca Black, Kony2012… all this and more on this weeks episode of The History Of Memes, Part 2.
Memes. An absolute essential part of internet culture that in most cases take on lives of their own. In this first episode of our three-part series on the history of memes, we cover who coined the term, how they began, and the early days of meme culture. ERMAHGERD!
Two stories for ya this week about Reddit. Story #1: Bijan and guest host Ryan Broderick discuss what happened in 2014 when a Reddit user set out to discredit Tumblr by creating a post so hilariously dishonest it became notorious, and as such representative of Reddit culture of the day. And in story #2, Saige and Harry talk about the rise and fall of Unidan, Reddit's version of Steve Irwin with his opening catchphrase "biologist here" and his love of crows.
In 2013 and 2018 respectively, two conventions unfolded and soon became infamous for being the disasters they inflicted upon their fans. In story #1, Bijan and Saige peel back the layers of what happened at DashCon, the unofficial convention for Tumblr... and the now legendary ball-pit. And for story #2, Rowan and Harry discuss TanaCon, the spite convention to rule them all. Sit back, grab your snacks, and enjoy.
What happens when a brand's meme and marketing game is on point (and those brands whose game are not)? For our first story we talk about the first brand to be welcomed by the internet - Denny's - and all the things they did right. For our second story, this episode would not be complete without talking about KFC and all the ways they've broken (and continue to break) the internet. BONUS UPDATE: We learned many new things about Harry tonight. We look forward to your thoughts on it. Also, maybe leave us a comment? WE LOVE COMMENTS!
On this episode, we're talking about the simulation of human intelligence in machines, and how its applications have developed on the web. For our first story we're discussing Cleverbot, an AI chat web page that in 2011 passed the Turing Test. Up next is the story of Bina48, an AI robot from the perspective of a queer African-American that turned our perceptions of AI on its head.
ARGs for short, these games are unlike anything you've ever "played" before. Because they begin as games you don't know you're playing. Popularized by the internet, the game can start with a video, a tweet, a Reddit post. All it takes is for a group of people to play along. And now you have a game. In the first story, we cover the video series Petscop, a walk-through of an unfinished video game that delves into unexpected territory. And for the second story, we're talking about The Sun Vanished, which began with a simple tweet that said "help"
This episode we peel back the pixels on early internet Flash Games and the ensuing chaos of trying to stay alive with massive server bills and Scientology owners. First up, Newgrounds, a user-generated website that began with Flash games like 'Club A Seal' and 'Assassin', but became famous as the home of viral videos like 'Numa Numa Dance'. This is followed by our second story, Neopets, in which the original creators accidentally sold a majority stake in their children's Pokemon-esque company to Scientologists who in turn decided to run their new acquisition using the "80 trillion year-old" organizational management technique developed by an ancient civilization. We wish we were kidding.

Yahoo recently announced that it will be shutting down their “ask site” Yahoo Answers and so on this episode, we pour one out in this Yahooeulogy for the legendary hive-mind site for the internet’s weirdest questions as we tackle two stories about it: First, The history of Yahoo Answers. And second, Ken M, the wholesome troll account that drove the unknown fits of verbal rage.
We're joined by journalist/streamer/podcaster Bijan Stephen to talk about gaming's greatest power fantasy: unalienated labor. On this episode we go hunting for the stories where fans took over and made something their own... on the internet. In the first story, Bijan and guest host Anthony Carboni explore video game developers/prankster group Arcane Kids and the Sonic The Hedgehog game they created because Sega would never make it. And in the second story we dive into internet legend, Slender Man and the twist to the horror genre only the internet could invent.
How many chairs equate to a real US dollar? Tonight we go sleuthing for the stories of currencies of in-game economies and why people spend real money for digital items. Four and a half months later, it became known as one of the first “internet hoaxes”, creating a War of The Worlds moment that modern culture had not seen before. Join us as we dive deep into the history of this phenomenon with co-creator Mesh Flinders.

Quick content warning! This episode contains discussions about or directly relating to cyberbullying and suicide, topics potentially sensitive for you or others. This week we’re diving into two stories about MySpace that defined the social network of the time. First, MySpace celebrities! The rise of the Influencer was popularized in this era and MySpace was a major platform for that. And for our second piece, we discuss the dawn of cyberbullying, and specifically, the Megan Meier story, and how it led to change.
In a world where meeting romantic partners online is the norm, we dive into two stories under this topic. First, where it all began, with the one of the world’s first known computer dating applications. And the second, in which a website designed to explicitly facilitate people looking to cheat on their spouses goes horribly wrong in more ways than anyone could imagine.
On this episode we cover two wildly disparate corners of fan fiction: "My Immortal", the Harry Potter fanfic that was massively popular, and serial killer fan fiction, featuring some of the most widely known killers in interesting situations.
For our very first episode, Bijan, Rowan, Harry, and Saige explore MMOs. One story's about Corrupted Blood, the WoW in-game pandemic that foreshadowed things to come, and then worlds.com, one of the original MMOs that's still around today... but maybe for not the reason you expect.

Hello and welcome to Episode 24. This is Arjun. My head hurts. I feel like I’ve been in nonstop pain this entire year. Yes, it’s because of the pandemic, and we cannot forget the unmanageable political anxiety that continues to fester in Biden’s America. But on top of it all, the question that has prolonged this never-ending migraine is: How can I fix the lack of diversity in the media?Over the course of this podcast’s existence, we’ve presented this mind-melting noggin noodler to some of the most talented journalists of color in the industry. There were many answers, but there seemed to be one overarching sentiment: this is a dumb question and we shouldn’t be wasting our guests’ time with it. But we begged them to humor us.In this week’s episode, Kevin and I look back at the various outcomes of The Diversity Tribunal.Arjun and Kevin talk about the year’s end and New York’s death (0:00)The Diversity Tribunal (6:46)“People should leave.” -Jay Caspian Kang (7:55)“The media industry exists as an exploitative force.” -Maya Binyam (12:17)“We have to stop letting old institutions and bastions of corporate media be our gods.” -Jazmine Hughes (15:15)“Fire everybody. Viral videos of police brutality against Black people have generated outrage, protest, and sustained national attention this year. We talk to Bijan Stephen, a reporter at The Verge, about his latest project called “Capturing The Police,” which examines the impact these videos have on the people who film them. Another 884,000 people filed for unemployment last week, which is more than economists were expecting. The Republicans failed to pass their “skinny” relief bill in the Senate, and it’s not clear whether another deal will be reached before the election. And in headlines: the NFL kicks off their season, Microsoft announces election hacks, and Mike Pence gets friendly with QAnon. Hey there! I'm Mike Rugnetta, I'm Shannon Odell, I'm Nick Guercio, I'm Jenn de la Vega, I'm Bijan Stephen and I'm Taylor Moore. We’ve got a whirlwind of an episode this week on The Vergecast. Nilay, Paul, and Dieter bring back Silicon Valley Editor and host of Converge Casey Newton to discuss Twitter’s bad week and what the heck is going on with them. But before that, there’s a whole lot of other things that came up. We reviewed both the Galaxy Note 9 and Android 9 Pie this week, so Dieter runs through everything you need to know about the two launches. We’ve also got two fresh segments this this week. Deputy Editor Liz Lopatto updates us on this week in Elon Musk, and culture reporters Megan Farokhmanesh and Bijan Stephen stop by to tell us what’s happening in culture section of The Verge. There’s a whole lot more in between that — such as Paul’s segment, “Phone prison,” that he does every week — so listen in to hear it all. 01:36 - Battery week 02:14 - Note 9 review 09:58 - Android 9 Pie review 18:11 - This week in Elon with Liz Lopatto 21:51 - Tesla allegedly covered up drug trafficking and spied on employees at the Gigafactory, whistleblower says 23:03 - Verizon’s 5G home internet launch will come with free YouTube TV or Apple TV 4K 23:26 - Sprint and LG will release a 5G smartphone in the first half of 2019 31:02 - This week in culture with Megan and Bijan 38:18 - Twitter’s fear of making hard decisions is killing it 1:01:05 - Twitter officially kills off key features in third-party apps 1:08:00 - Paul’s weekly segment “Phone prison” 1:11:20 -Google may add Windows 10 dual-boot option to Chromebooks Learn more about your ad choices. We’ve got a super stuffed episode of The Vergecast this week. First, the biggest news in tech right now is the European Commission’s ruling that Google has been unfairly using Android to push Google search on users, giving it an unfair advantage. Nilay, Dieter, and Paul sit down and discuss the implications. In the second half of the show, Dieter discusses some of the new MacBook Pro benchmarks that claim the processors may throttle performance due to cooling issues. Nilay got an exclusive interview with Roku CEO Anthony Wood, so we’ve included that in this episode as well. Also, our culture coverage continues this week with another roundup by Megan Farokhmanesh and Bijan Stephen. There’s even a whole lot more in between that — like Paul’s newly sponsored segment “Fold the phone” — so listen to it all, and you’ll get it all. 01:46 - Verizon is shutting down its original video app Go90 06:26 - Six questions you were afraid to ask about Google’s EU antitrust case 25:09 - Google may put its Fuchsia OS on smart home devices within three years 34:25 - This week in culture with Megan and Bijan 39:42 - Test suggests 2018 MacBook Pro can’t keep up with Intel Core i9 chip’s thermal demands 53:15 - Roku CEO Anthony Wood interview 1:17:33 - Paul’s weekly segment “Fold the phone” 1:20:39 - Galaxy Note 9 leak suggests it looks a lot like the Note 8 1:22:12 - Walmart reportedly plans to launch Netflix competitor under its Vudu brand later this year Learn more about your ad choices. The Vergecast starts off this week in a traditional fashion with a talk about dongles — Microsoft’s $80 USB-C dongle to be exact. But there’s a whole bunch of little things that also happened this week that Nilay, Dieter, and Paul discuss. We’ve got Apple acknowledging the problem with its MacBook keyboards, Google demoing Duplex, and Apple releasing the Mojave public beta. Also this week, we bring you two new rotating segments on the show. First we have transportation reporter Sean O’Kane with “This Week in Elon Musk” — a rundown of the news that happened this week in the Elon Musk canon. Second, culture reporters Megan Farokhmanesh and Bijan Stephen run though their favorite “Culture Headlines” on The Verge this week. And of course we’ve got Paul’s weekly segment that he does every week, “Rhymes With What’s Poppin’,” so if you listen to the whole show, you’ve got a stew going. 02:20 - Microsoft’s Surface USB-C dongle launches on June 29th for $79.99 09:15 - Apple acknowledges faulty MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards with new repair program 15:00 - macOS Mojave is now available in public beta 20:59 - Intel now faces a fight for its future 29:06 - This week in Elon Musk with Sean O’Kane 33:41 - Google Duplex really works and testing begins this summer 42:03 - BlackBerry Key2 review: a keyboard with a phone 42:59 - LG says screw everything, we’re doing five cameras for the V40 43:57 - The Galaxy Note 9 hits the FCC, with launch of Samsung’s next flagship presumably on the horizon 45:51 - AT&T more than doubles ‘admin fee’ for every wireless customer 48:31 - Culture headlines with Megan and Bijan 52:58 - Honda retires its famed Asimo robot 53:41 - Paul’s weekly segment “Rhymes with whats poppin” 55:58 - Amazon adds voice control to its Alexa iOS app 59:19 - Sonos Beam review: living room upgrade Learn more about your ad choices. Writer Bijan Stephen joins merritt to talk liminal spaces, lucid dreams, and ghost research.
Bijan Stephen, an associate editor for The New Republic. Bijan has written for Wired, The New Republic, Fast Company (Today in Tabs), TIME, and more than a dozen other outlets, is our guest on the show this week. Prolific doesn't really do him justice. He’s accomplished enough at such a young age (24) to make me feel the beginnings of my own age-inspired cultural blindness, as becomes evident on the show. We talk to Bijan about his editing vs. his writing, the time he was fired from a media consulting firm, how he became everyone's favorite media intern, growing up in suburban Texas and what it means to be woke. Produced by The Podglomerate. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Time works in strange ways in both pieces on this episode. Shelly Oria reads a short story from her new collection, New York 1, Tel Aviv 0, about measuring love, distance, and loss, and Bijan Stephen reads an essay that tells the story of one night in fragments, but decades and centuries are tangled up in those moments.
