Careful of Your Keepers, the sixth full-length album by This Is the Kit, ends with the mantra-like benediction of "Be Okay". It's a beautifully delicate place to land, after ten songs that navigate their way through a world full of actions, their equal and opposite reactions, and the inextricably linked, overwhelmingly human dance between beauty and pain.  It's an album that starts with a goodbye. Or more precisely, it starts with a track called "Goodbye Bite", which carries on with plenty of bite throughout. The lyrics and imagery are are full of teeth and clawing and chewing. As Kate Stables sings on the chorus to the song "Inside Outside" – quoting Ralph Wiggum's celebrated Valentine note to Lisa on an episode of The Simpsons – "Bite off as much as you can chew/ I chew chew choose you."   Kate Stables is the singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist/ banjo enthusiast at the heart of this project. She grew up and fell in love with music in Winchester, one of Old England's oldest cities. She then moved on to the magical music city of Bristol, also the birthplace of groundbreaking acts like Portishead and Massive Attack. It's been a couple of decades since she moved to the artists' mecca of Paris, along with her husband (and fellow musician/bandleader) Jesse Vernon.  She and her musical collaborators have quietly built a body of work that's seen This Is the Kit become one of the most revered and distinctive creative forces in folk music. Their much-acclaimed 2023 album builds on 20 years of creative evolution, and finds them collaborating with a hero of Kate's from back in her teenage years – Gruff Rhys, who came to fame as the frontperson for Welsh '90s indie rock deities Super Furry Animals.  During the course of a wintertime 2024 tour through Alberta, Kate Stables stopped off at CKUA's Calgary studios to share an illuminating conversation about the elliptical nature of reality, her musical beginnings and creative evolution, drawing inspiration from a century-old banjo discovered in someone's attic, her surprisingly robust connections with Canada and/or Canadian music, working with one of her heroes, and what she always carries in her handbag.

Kate Stables is a singer, song-writer, multi instrumentalist and founding member of This Is The Kit. British born Paris based Stables will be releasing her 7th full length record, Careful Of Your Keepers on June 9th via Rough Trade Records. The new effort is a complex, soothing and magnetic collection of songs produced and "toneset" by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon). In this episode Joe and Kate discuss the lyrical origin and tone of the new record and Kate shares some insight into her general writing process and how that connects to the listener. Kate tells us why she's likely a "changer" vs. and "stay the samer" and how that may manifest in both her life and art. She also shares the experience of making Careful Of Your Keepers with a super furry animal, explains the meaning behind This Is The Kit and champions Joes excitement for the video for the single More Change. https://youtu.be/v25evwdaf8o This episode supported by Native Instruments, iZotope, and Plugin Alliance. This is the Kit is the alias of British singer and guitarist Kate Stables, as well as the band she fronts. Her early albums were rooted in the long British folk/rock tradition, with later work perhaps more under the influence of indie rock.  In June, she releases a new album called Careful of Your Keepers produced by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), full of big ideas and big arrangements, but it's also a very intimate, honest, and introspective set of songs. Kate plays some of them in a solo performance, in-studio. - John Schaefer Set list: “More Change”, “Stuck in a Room”, “Inside Outside” Watch “More Change”: Watch “Stuck in a Room”: Watch “Inside Outside”:

What a selection this is! We're always happy with the selection of music we bring to each and every Independent Music Podcast, but there is something truly magical about this combination of tracks. There's a whole lot of maximalism in small packages, from the very first track we have heavy jazz skronk combining with ferocious ‘punch a hole in your soul' drumming of Australian duo Party Dozen. We follow that with the latest dance floor-friendly industrial body music of Barcelona duo Dame Area, whose Ondas Tribales record on Mannequin was one of our favourites of last year, and the follow-up is equally wonderful. Elsewhere we've got an introduction to Venezuela synthesiser pioneer Oksana Linde, and a more contemporary female footwork pioneer Jana Rush. We have Indonesian disco from Midnight Runners, a This is the Kit cover of Rachael Dadd, and so much more. Tracklisting Party Dozen – The Iron Boot (Temporary Residence Ltd., USA) Dame Area – Esto me Pertenece (Humo Internacional, Spain) Oksana Linde – Intromersión (Buh Records, Peru) Jana Rush – Don't Want No Dick (Planet Mu, UK) Why Patterns – Wretched Makeshifts (Human Worth, UK) Midnight Runners – La Mama (Star Creature Universal Vibrations, USA) Will Glaser – Beginnings (Ubuntu Music, UK) Kate Stables, Rachael Dadd – Palaeontologist (Memphis Industries, UK) Count Jaakola – Keep It In the Ground (self-release, UK) Shit and Shine – SOCKTAGON (Riot Season, UK / The Garotte, USA) This week's episode is sponsored by The state51 Conspiracy, a creative hub for music. Kate shares with us her thoughts on her latest work and how many of those songs have been widely interpreted as quarantine songs despite all of them being written pre-Covid. She also provides us with tons of interesting perspective on going from DIY touring with her own band to traveling by tour bus and staying in swanky digs while on the road with The National.  It's a really fun and enlightening conversation -- especially if you're a fan of The National -- so join us for this great ride!!For more information: http://www.roadcasepod.comTo support Roadcase on Patreon, please visit: http://www.patreon.com/roadcasepodContact: info@roadcasepod.com

Eliza Shaddad is joined by Oddisee, Gaidaa and This Is the Kit's Kate Stables to discuss working from home, where they now record, and how factors such as politics and heritage feed into the creative system. Eliza Shaddad is a singer songwriter whose debut album Future came out in 2018, which she described as her “sonic journal”. Oddisee is a Sudanese-American rapper and producer based in Brooklyn, originally from Washington DC. His first release was a collaboration with DJ Jazzy Jeff in 2002, and since then he has released a series of acclaimed mixtapes, EPs and albums, as well as founding the rap trio Diamond District. Gaidaa is a Sudanese Dutch artist who grew up between Sudan and Eindhoven in Holland. Her debut EP Overture came out last year, firmly establishing her as a rising star in the spheres of neo-soul and R&B. And Kate Stables is the creative force behind the band This Is The Kit. Their songs are said to “untangle emotional knots and weave remarkable stories”, and the band’s latest album Off Off On came out on Rough Trade last October.

Thanks for listening to the December 2020 episode of the Deepdale Podcast, our end of year celebration of fabulous music from some of our favourite artists. Many have either played at Deepdale or we’d love them to play at Deepdale. Chris, Jason and Nathan bring you our Top Music Releases in 2020, farm chat and our favourite indy Christmas tunes (effectively the Deepdale Christmas Album).______Chris’ Favourite Music Releases in 2020Jason set Chris the challenge to pick 8 albums that reflected his listening in 2020, and what a set of albums he’s selected. We hope you will help these artists by buying their music, preferably directly from the artists. The Jayhawks – XOXOThe Jayhawks are Sheila’s favourite band, and she introduced Chris to their music. They got to meet the band at Moseley Folk Festival last year. Great album, and well worth purchasing.Courtney Marie Andrews – Old FlowersAnother discovery for Chris & Sheila at the Moseley Folk Festival. This album helps support her music crew who have had such a tough year. Not the happiest of albums, but fabulous music.Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit – ReunionsChris feels Jason is a ‘master songwriter’, and loves his body of work, but particularly this new album. Our Jason (not Mr Isbell) is new to The 400 Unit and loved this selection.Little Red Kings – The Magic Show Part 1A band we love hosting at Deepdale, and they were due to headline Deepdale Festival 2020. Fingers crossed they’ll be with us in 2021 instead. A band that is so talented and should be better know out side of Norfolk. The Chicks – GaslighterFormerly The Dixie Chicks, The Chicks changed their name to step away from the racist conertations of their former name. We’ve all been fans of these ladies for a long time, and this album is a return to form.Das Fenster & The Alibis – Lucky Charms & FirearmsThese lovely guys have produced a fabulous album this year. Fans of Deepdale Music events will have heard some of the tracks during performances from these guys. A great buy, will make you want to dance, and bring a smile to your face.Kirsty Merryn – Our Bright NightKirsty was due to perform at Deepdale Festival 2020 in St Mary’s Church, but Covid has moved that performance to September 2021. This beautiful album, taking you through one night is a beautiful piece of work.Martin Simpson – Home RecordingsWhat a brilliant album created in lockdown at home. Martin was due to play at Deepdale Festival 2020, and has kindly agreed to move his performance to September 2021, really looking forward to that.No one, who knows Chris’ love of music, will be the slightest bit surprised that he struggled to pick just 8 albums. So we gave him leeway and allowed him to include some honourable mentions. This Is The Kit – Off Off OnChris describes This Is The Kit’s album as one you could never get bored with. He would love Kate Stables and her band to play at Deepdale Festival, so this is an official invite to them, and we hope we can host them sometime soon.Kathryn Williams & Carol Ann Duffy – Snow AngelChris is quick to point out this isn’t an album, its a single specially produced for Christmas 2020. Kathryn was the one that got away in 2020, as was very nearly booked for the Deepdale Festival. With hope the stoned will aline and we’ll hear Kathryn performing at Deepdale sometime soon. The Shackleton Trio – Gonna Retrain As Santa ClausOur lovely friends the shacks, have taken government advice and headed the call for the arts to retrain, choosing to take the job of Santa Claus. We approve of the career move, but would miss their music if they did retrain!Man The Lifeboats – When The Time Bell RingsWe’ve welcomed these guys to Deepdale a couple of times, and they set the Brick Barn alight, with everyone dancing and loving the music. Due to play at our Beltane in May, which has been hopefully reset for this coming May, fingers crossed. Great listen._____Farm ChatAfter all that lovely music, Nathan & Jason have a bit of Farm Chat. A quiet time in terms of drilling crop and other workson Deepdale Farm, but our Winter Barley is poking its head out of the soil, our woodland management plan is taking shape, and the process of going organic continues._____Christmas TunesLast up on the podcast is what has been become known as the Deepdale Christmas Album. Une orfèvre de la folk, avec l'anglaise This is the Kit et son titre This is What you did This is what you did est une chanson que la musicienne assimile à une crise de panique. This is the Kit, c'est Kate Stables. This is what you did est le premier single de l'album Off Off On, sorti le 23 octobre dernier sur Rough Trade Records. Her early albums were rooted in the long British folk/rock tradition, but her new record, Off Off On, has a different sound – grander arrangements, with more flesh on them, for one - perhaps more so for her having toured (in the before times) and with The National. She joins us remotely to play some of these pre-pandemic songs in their intimate solo form, and invites us to be uplifted. "Coming to get you Nowhere": "This Is What You Did":

Kate is an amazing songwriter, performer and record maker, and we get into the detail about how we make our records (we are both in progress as we make this!) and how we feel about it. For the first time in a podcast I (Nuala Honan) do a lot more talking about my own experiences and goings on. Also some interesting differences in life in lock down in Paris and just a lot of giggling. Join Nuala each episode as she works her way through the contacts in her phone, catching up with old friends, checking in with the sick or self-employed, or just a jolly chat with a charming mate. The aim of this podcast is to pass the time, to bring you stories that might help you navigate your own way through this viral mess, and most importantly, to build the mother of all music playlists to soothe your isolated body and mind. Ursula le Guin was born in California in 1929. Her books - including A Wizard of Earthsea and The Left Hand of Darkness - have been described as masterpieces but she battled prejudice all her life from the literary elite. Choosing her because she loves both Ursula's books and who she was is the British musician Kate Stables. She's speaking to Matthew Parris from Paris. On the line from San Francisco is Arwen Curry - she knew the author and made the film The Worlds of Ursula K Le Guin with the strapline, A Wizard's Work is Never Done. The producers in Bristol are Toby Field and Miles Warde

In November 2019 the band Massive Attack announced it was working with the Tyndall Centre in Manchester to devise a strategy for touring without emitting carbon dioxide. They join a host of acts including Coldplay, The 1975, Radiohead and Billie Eilish all of whom intend to tour in as green a way as possible in the future. Tom Heap speaks to Chris Jones of the Tyndall Centre to find out what the key components are to produce a 'green' gig and how this could provide a template for bands in the future. But what of the smaller bands for whom touring is their main source of income? This is the question he puts to Kate Stables of the band This is the Kit who talks about the difficulties of balancing her environmental conscience with her desire to play music to a live audience. He also speaks to musicians Fay Milton and Sam Lee from the organisation Music Declares Emergency about what a band can do and where their responsibilities start and finish. Murray Matravers from the band Easy Life explains how shooting a video on a plastic recycling site in Morocco brought these issue home to him, and Surrey-based artist Bruch talks about how the environment sits at the heart of every decision she makes as a musician. Also featured are BBC Introducing bands Brand New Friend, Roving Crows, Lucy Leave and October Drift. This is more than just a debate about who should and shouldn't play live. This is a discussion about the role music plays in our lives and how we can best experience it whilst acknowledging its impact on the planet. Producer: Toby Field

“There should never be a barrier between making music and not making music.” For the last ten or so years, the words This Is The Kit have meant the inspirational songwriting, rewarding albums and endlessly listenable vocals of Kate Stables. Together with bassist Rozi Plain, Kate sat down to talk to Tim in the summer of 2019, a few days after a great Glastonbury performance. They discussed gigging, recording, writing and the burning question of which other countries they might like to hail from, if not from the UK. Contains one very small swear word (entirely Tim's fault). Here's a playlist of some great TITK tracks and a couple of Rozi's too https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0etwNCbIMqNEM3EWT2Y76m?si=-rJoegW9QTesIt_o8sZVLA Thanks to Siân Monaghan Game Changing logo by Dawn Kelly

I had the opportunity to interview Kate Stables, the multi-instrumentalist core of This is the Kit, after the band's soundcheck at the Fox Cabaret. We talk about jokes, Kate's writing process, the state of the world and our perception of it, and the issues of a small, indie band. Truly a lovely and thoughtful individual and I really enjoyed the whole experience. Enjoy.

Kate Stables’ Earl of Lemongrab wallet is on the table when I sit down for our interview at Baby’s All Right — so naturally, we spend the first several minutes of the conversation discussing Adventure Time. It was some she discovered independently, but it’s since become a nice source of bonding for Staples and her daughter. Stables happily discusses the ways in which having a child have impacted the music of This is the Kit, from decisions to take her on tour in her younger days, to a hand clapping pattern she and a school mate brought home that inspired “Moonshine Freeze” the lead off single and title track from the band’s new album. Then there’s the utter lack of alone time, something the musician says she requires in order to thrive as a songwriter — though she’s found enough of it to put together her fourth and strongest record to date. And, thankfully, we were able to grab a few relatively quiet moments ahead of her most recent New York appears to discuss the songwriting process and what it means to be in a band.
