Sunday Sanctuary has teamed up with the Makers and Mystics podcast to bring you this episode on reclaiming wonder! Stephen Roach from Makers & Mystics is Petra's guest on this episode of Sunday Sanctuary as they explore the different ways that noticing the small wonders of the world can re-open, restore and change lives. Petra and Stephen look at finding wonder largely through the lens of creativity, but no matter how creative you're feeling today, this episode is a calm, wonder-chasing sanctuary for you. For those of you who want to delve deeper into Petra and Stephen's conversation, an extended cut will appear in the Makers & Mystics podcast feed on November 13th. For any Mystics & Makers listeners who have come to Sunday Sanctuary, kia ora/hello! It's great to have you here. Haere mai! (Welcome/Come along!) Sacred texts: 'The mystery of tea' scene from the film After Yang (a great film, especially for fans of cosy sci-fi which looks at themes of memory and family) 'The Summer Day' poem by Mary Oliver (read by Mary Oliver at The 92nd St Y) Music: Weird Little Birthday Girl by Happyness (played during intro) Stromy by Gabor Szabo (played to end the first part of Stephen's conversation) Red Lit Room by Holly Arrowsmith Space is the Place by Ezra Collective (played during Community Life) The Sea Has Spoken by Songs of Water (This is Stephen's band! Played during the contemplative moment) Summer's End by Julie Byrne (played during communion) Movement 6 and Movement 7 by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra Slider (Lorenzo Saxophone Dub) by This Is The Kit (played at the end of Stephen's conversation) Vanity by Mica Levi (played during the benediction)

This one's a special show for me! For this show, Yellow Brit Road (I) was on the ground in Toronto, where I caught up with a personal hero of mine: Gruff Rhys, Welsh musician, former frontman of the band Super Furry Animals, one half of Mercury-nominated duo Neon Neon, storyteller extraordinaire and solo musician. Gruff was performing at the Drake Underground in Toronto on 17 October 2023, supporting indie-folk band This Is The Kit on tour across North America. We talked about the Welsh music scene, the 90s, Super Furry Animals, Welsh pop culture, Super Furries' "lost techno album", and Gruff's upcoming solo album, Sadness Sets Me Free, out 26 January 2024! (tomorrow) Find all the music played/mentioned on the show here. PS: CFRC Live Sessions are now on air! And the CFRC funding drive is in full swing! Fifteen years and now six albums into her career, British-born, Paris-based, Kate Stables aka This Is The Kit sits down with host Carmel Holt to discuss her brilliant latest album, Careful of Your Keepers, reflections on her journey thus far, early lessons learned from her SHERO Ani DiFranco, and the many facets of the irritating yet necessary question: what's it like to be a woman in music? Her answers are poignant and at times hilarious.

I haven't done a quiet indie songs mix since this time last year. This one started when I heard the latest Peter Gabriel track, Love Can Heal, which I adore. And the timing is good as I'll be seeing him in concert on Oct. 2nd. I've heard that in his live show he plays a lot of the new tracks he's been releasing monthly. Several months ago that would have given me pause because I didn't much care for the first few new tracks. But they have been getting better and better with each new song. The rest of the mix is just what it says it is - a collection of quiet indie tracks, all of them released in 2023. It includes some old faves like Neil Young, Kevin Morby, Slowdive, & Julie Byrne along with new to me artists like Scott Orr, The Finks, This Is The Kit, & Jörgen Kjellgren. Cheers! What Goes Around returns with another well balanced look at the world of music. In this episode we attempt to find equilibrium between the beautiful folk music of Kate Stables from This Is The Kit and the spittle festooned twin punk worlds of Agnostic Front and The Anti-Nowhere League. Somewhere carefully balanced in the middle stands our Deb as she finally moves to Manchester and gets her dream job. Not many podcasts haver this much range listeners. Kate Stables from This is the Kit talks to us from her Paris apartment as her 6th album drops to enormous critical acclaim. We discuss listening, writing and mind blowing moments as the Parisian emergency services busy about their riot happy city.
Kate Stables is a singer, song-writer, multi instrumentalist and founding member of This Is The Kit. British born Paris based Stables will be releasing her 7th full length record, Careful Of Your Keepers on June 9th via Rough Trade Records. The new effort is a complex, soothing and magnetic collection of songs produced and "toneset" by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon). In this episode Joe and Kate discuss the lyrical origin and tone of the new record and Kate shares some insight into her general writing process and how that connects to the listener. Kate tells us why she's likely a "changer" vs. and "stay the samer" and how that may manifest in both her life and art. She also shares the experience of making Careful Of Your Keepers with a super furry animal, explains the meaning behind This Is The Kit and champions Joes excitement for the video for the single More Change. https://youtu.be/v25evwdaf8o This episode supported by Native Instruments, iZotope, and Plugin Alliance. So yesterday, the Winchester born musician Rozi Plain – not singer songwriter, not folk singer FYI – released her new album, her seventh, the really very brilliant, Prize. Now out on the ever-excellent Memphis Industries, it is a thing of wonder. The night before it's release I had a chat with the record's creator about whether she reads reviews of her music, the impracticalities of pyro, elves, her work in This Is The Kit, her forthcoming tour, the mysteries of Wikipedia, how not to choose a stage name… all sorts of stupid shit. It was a hoot, it really, really was. Graham interrupts early with memories of BB King's Eighties and Nineties' gigs in Yorkshire as we learn the late blues great will have his own TV channel next year. Charles and Graham mull over rising cinema attendances and changes in cinema-going experiences as Hutch attends a ViP screening of Spencer at Cineworld York, string quartet et al. Charles celebrates a new venue for him, in York, where he had the pleasure to see This Is The Kit. Graham follows the knotty roads tying together an American local journalist, The Merry Pranksters, Hustler magazine, Jack Kerouac and Hebden Bridge in 2022. Charles tries to take the re-boxed Festival of Brexit out of its Unboxed box, to Graham's mockery.
Big Red Machine - "Phoenix (feat. Fleet Foxes & Anaïs Mitchell)" from the 2021 album How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? on 37d03d. Last month, The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon released their second album under the name Big Red Machine, titled How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?. The album features a heavyweight line-up of guests, including Taylor Swift, Sharon Van Etten, This Is The Kit, Ben Howard, Naeem, Lisa Hannigan, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Nova, and on today's Song of the Day, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes and Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. "'Phoenix' was one of the last songs we wrote for this record," Dessner says via a press release. "I was thinking about The Band and the Grateful Dead... maybe imagining this Big Red Machine album was some version of The Last Waltz. Justin first heard it while driving and immediately the chorus melody came into his head. I shared the sketch with Robin Pecknold, who I've been a fan of forever and who I'd been dreaming would join us on this record. Robin wrote the verses and pre chorus as a kind of dialogue with Justin, recalling a conversation they once had backstage in Phoenix. Later Anais wrote words to the chorus and The Westerlies added their magic to the instrumental. JT Bates rumbles around in rare form on the drums on this song. I think it's what I always imagined Big Red Machine would sound like." Pecknold adds, “It was a high, high honor to work on this song, and beyond that it was a really interesting creative challenge. Justin's vocals and the beautiful chorus were already in place before I got my hands on it, so I felt my job melodically and lyrically was to set his entrance up in the best possible way. I felt like a pilgrim putting questions to an elusive sage, not needing clear answers, but happy for the chance to ask.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!! Come on aboard for this episode with the supremely talented Kate Stables who joined us from Paris, France to talk about This Is The Kit's latest album, Off Off On, a gorgeous album which she wrote while on the road with The National. Kate is a unique and captivating artist as well as an engaging conversationalist and she chats with Josh about what it's like to hang with The National and perform side-by-side with lead vocalist Matt Berninger during the I Am Easy to Find 2019 tour -- as she and Josh reminisce about many of those shows. Kate's musical background is both deep and multi-faceted and she has worked with some tremendously talented producers such as Josh Kaufman, who produced Off Off On, as well as Aaron Dessner who produced Kate's 2014 album, Bashed Out. Kate shares with us her thoughts on her latest work and how many of those songs have been widely interpreted as quarantine songs despite all of them being written pre-Covid. She also provides us with tons of interesting perspective on going from DIY touring with her own band to traveling by tour bus and staying in swanky digs while on the road with The National. It's a really fun and enlightening conversation -- especially if you're a fan of The National -- so join us for this great ride!!For more information: http://www.roadcasepod.comTo support Roadcase on Patreon, please visit: http://www.patreon.com/roadcasepodContact: info@roadcasepod.com
Newer music (Corvair, This Is The Kit, Nap Eyes, Ruth Good) is mixed in with older stuff (West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Linda Smith, Candi Staton), as Bob Nastanovich and Mike Hogan discuss all topics from environmentally friendly lawnmowers, former MLB star Otis Nixon's personal life, and the possibility of a Pavement tour in 2022.
Eliza Shaddad is joined by Oddisee, Gaidaa and This Is the Kit's Kate Stables to discuss working from home, where they now record, and how factors such as politics and heritage feed into the creative system. Eliza Shaddad is a singer songwriter whose debut album Future came out in 2018, which she described as her “sonic journal”. Oddisee is a Sudanese-American rapper and producer based in Brooklyn, originally from Washington DC. His first release was a collaboration with DJ Jazzy Jeff in 2002, and since then he has released a series of acclaimed mixtapes, EPs and albums, as well as founding the rap trio Diamond District. Gaidaa is a Sudanese Dutch artist who grew up between Sudan and Eindhoven in Holland. Her debut EP Overture came out last year, firmly establishing her as a rising star in the spheres of neo-soul and R&B. And Kate Stables is the creative force behind the band This Is The Kit. Their songs are said to “untangle emotional knots and weave remarkable stories”, and the band’s latest album Off Off On came out on Rough Trade last October.

Thanks for listening to the December 2020 episode of the Deepdale Podcast, our end of year celebration of fabulous music from some of our favourite artists. Many have either played at Deepdale or we’d love them to play at Deepdale. Chris, Jason and Nathan bring you our Top Music Releases in 2020, farm chat and our favourite indy Christmas tunes (effectively the Deepdale Christmas Album).______Chris’ Favourite Music Releases in 2020Jason set Chris the challenge to pick 8 albums that reflected his listening in 2020, and what a set of albums he’s selected. We hope you will help these artists by buying their music, preferably directly from the artists. The Jayhawks – XOXOThe Jayhawks are Sheila’s favourite band, and she introduced Chris to their music. They got to meet the band at Moseley Folk Festival last year. Great album, and well worth purchasing.Courtney Marie Andrews – Old FlowersAnother discovery for Chris & Sheila at the Moseley Folk Festival. This album helps support her music crew who have had such a tough year. Not the happiest of albums, but fabulous music.Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit – ReunionsChris feels Jason is a ‘master songwriter’, and loves his body of work, but particularly this new album. Our Jason (not Mr Isbell) is new to The 400 Unit and loved this selection.Little Red Kings – The Magic Show Part 1A band we love hosting at Deepdale, and they were due to headline Deepdale Festival 2020. Fingers crossed they’ll be with us in 2021 instead. A band that is so talented and should be better know out side of Norfolk. The Chicks – GaslighterFormerly The Dixie Chicks, The Chicks changed their name to step away from the racist conertations of their former name. We’ve all been fans of these ladies for a long time, and this album is a return to form.Das Fenster & The Alibis – Lucky Charms & FirearmsThese lovely guys have produced a fabulous album this year. Fans of Deepdale Music events will have heard some of the tracks during performances from these guys. A great buy, will make you want to dance, and bring a smile to your face.Kirsty Merryn – Our Bright NightKirsty was due to perform at Deepdale Festival 2020 in St Mary’s Church, but Covid has moved that performance to September 2021. This beautiful album, taking you through one night is a beautiful piece of work.Martin Simpson – Home RecordingsWhat a brilliant album created in lockdown at home. Martin was due to play at Deepdale Festival 2020, and has kindly agreed to move his performance to September 2021, really looking forward to that.No one, who knows Chris’ love of music, will be the slightest bit surprised that he struggled to pick just 8 albums. So we gave him leeway and allowed him to include some honourable mentions. This Is The Kit – Off Off OnChris describes This Is The Kit’s album as one you could never get bored with. He would love Kate Stables and her band to play at Deepdale Festival, so this is an official invite to them, and we hope we can host them sometime soon.Kathryn Williams & Carol Ann Duffy – Snow AngelChris is quick to point out this isn’t an album, its a single specially produced for Christmas 2020. Kathryn was the one that got away in 2020, as was very nearly booked for the Deepdale Festival. With hope the stoned will aline and we’ll hear Kathryn performing at Deepdale sometime soon. The Shackleton Trio – Gonna Retrain As Santa ClausOur lovely friends the shacks, have taken government advice and headed the call for the arts to retrain, choosing to take the job of Santa Claus. We approve of the career move, but would miss their music if they did retrain!Man The Lifeboats – When The Time Bell RingsWe’ve welcomed these guys to Deepdale a couple of times, and they set the Brick Barn alight, with everyone dancing and loving the music. Due to play at our Beltane in May, which has been hopefully reset for this coming May, fingers crossed. Great listen._____Farm ChatAfter all that lovely music, Nathan & Jason have a bit of Farm Chat. A quiet time in terms of drilling crop and other workson Deepdale Farm, but our Winter Barley is poking its head out of the soil, our woodland management plan is taking shape, and the process of going organic continues._____Christmas TunesLast up on the podcast is what has been become known as the Deepdale Christmas Album. (Although its just samples, tempting you to head online to buy the actual songs)Little Red Kings – IntroLisa Redford – I Believe in Father ChristmasThe Shackleton Trio – Gonna Retrain as Santa ClausMan The Lifeboats – Whisky For ChristmasKathryn Williams & Carol Ann Duffy – Snow AngelMarina Florance – The Winter WindDusky Sunday – Every ChristmasFred’s House – Christmas at HomeTilly Moses – I’ll Be Home for ChristmasRattlebox – Ye Mariners AllAnd of course the whole podcast was started by the lovely intro track by the hugely talented Jess Morgan.HAPPY CHRISTMAS!_____Contents of this podcast00:00 - Intro by Jess Morgan01:03 - Introduction & The Jayhawks - XOXO05:57 - The Jayhawks - Across My Field08:05 - Courtney Marie Andrews - Old Flowers09:40 - Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit - Reunions11:26 - Little Red Kings - The Magic Show Part 113:19 - Little Red Kings - Weather The Storm15:21 - Dixie Chicks - Gaslighter17:34 - Das Fenster & The Alibis - Firearms & Lucky Charms19:13 - Das Fenster & The Alibis - Roll Up23:14 - Kirsty Merryn - Our Bright Night25:21 - Martin Simpson - Home Recordings26:37 - Martin Simpson - Angel From Montgomery29:11 - Honourable Mentions38:12 - Man The Lifeboats - When The Ship Goes Down40:23 - More Honourable Mentions41:58 - Farm Chat53:09 - Christmas Tunes55:01 - Lisa Redford - I Believe in Father Christmas56:23 - The Shackleton Trio - Gonna retrain as Santa Claus58:19 - Man The Lifeboats - Whisky For Christmas1:00:31 - Kathryn Williams & Carol Ann Duffy - Snow Angel1:02:35 - The Winter Wind Master - Marina Florance1:04:24 - Dusky Sunday - Every Christmas1:06:22 - Freds House - Christmas at Home1:08:26 - Tilly Moses - I'll Be Home for Christmas1:09:51 - Ye Mariners All by Rattlebox

This Is The Kit returns with a new album, Off Off On, and Kate Stables catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about finding new sounds and playing against the folk genre. Stables also discusses the themes of empathy and the human condition, the power of youth leading the movements around the world, and borrowing from the Earth from future generations. Currently residing in Paris, the singer-songwriter also dishes on her need for solitude, love of pinhole photography, and the special edition car decks she’s made, which could hold mystical powers. This Is The Kit is British singer and songwriter Kate Stables (lately based in France) and whoever joins her. Her early albums were rooted in the long British folk/rock tradition, but her new record, Off Off On, has a different sound – grander arrangements, with more flesh on them, for one - perhaps more so for her having toured (in the before times) and with The National. She joins us remotely to play some of these pre-pandemic songs in their intimate solo form, and invites us to be uplifted. "Coming to get you Nowhere": "This Is What You Did":

In January 2020, Rozi Plain travelled over to the Isle of Eigg to work with two of her closest companions; GERARD BLACK, a Glasgow-based musician and songwriter, frontman with electronic synth upstarts Babe, and frequent performer with Charlotte Gainsbourg and François & The Atlas Mountains; and JAMIE WHITBY-COLES, a fellow acolyte of the Bristol scene, who plays alongside Rozi with This Is The Kit, and creates his own music under the moniker B-Fax.Whilst on the island, this ebullient trio recorded a collection of woozy, groovy instrumentals and songs; dreamy guitars, soft analogue synths, floaty drums and percussion collide, each pal taking a turn on lead vocals.Part two of our two-part interview, was recorded in September 2020. Rozi, Gerard and Jamie were in Winchester, sat in Rozi’s parent’s garden - taking a break from recording some new demos. They discuss how they met one another, their trip to Eigg, and their writing/recording process during their stay on the island. Throughout this episode you’ll hear clips of some of the tracks they created for the project. To listen to the music they created in full, and to support this podcast, please subscribe to VISITATIONS. You’ll receive 3 x 12” vinyl releases (with CD and download copies included) from the three acts in the current series - Arthur King, Rachel Aggs, and Rozi Plain. Go to lostmap.com/visitations for more info. You can find Rozi over on roziplain.co.uk, and on all the regular social media places with the handle @roziplain. Gerard Black is @akuriousoranj on Twitter, and @babeband on Instagram. Jamie Whitby-Coles is an online enigma, but you can purchase his debut solo album, under the name B-Fax, available only from indie-shops across the UK.At the end of the episode, Pictish Trail presents an overview of the two series of VISITATIONS thus far, reflects on their common themes, and reveals what lies in store for the podcast…Lost Map Podcast is presented by Pictish Trail. Additional production and editing by Joe Cormack.

Since the mid 2000s, Kate Stables has been performing as This Is The Kit. Along the way she's built up a repertoire of wonderful songs, critically acclaimed albums, and the occasional high-profile collaboration. Now the band is back with a new album, Off Off On.

“There should never be a barrier between making music and not making music.” For the last ten or so years, the words This Is The Kit have meant the inspirational songwriting, rewarding albums and endlessly listenable vocals of Kate Stables. Together with bassist Rozi Plain, Kate sat down to talk to Tim in the summer of 2019, a few days after a great Glastonbury performance. They discussed gigging, recording, writing and the burning question of which other countries they might like to hail from, if not from the UK. Contains one very small swear word (entirely Tim's fault). Here's a playlist of some great TITK tracks and a couple of Rozi's too https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0etwNCbIMqNEM3EWT2Y76m?si=-rJoegW9QTesIt_o8sZVLA Thanks to Siân Monaghan Game Changing logo by Dawn Kelly
This conversation was recorded at Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff, just before Kate played with her band This Is The Kit. Kate is charming, inspiring and hugely insightful on creativity. She talks about how her process never really begins or ends, she reveals how she writes her extraordinary lyrics, and she makes a plea for more smiles and more play.

Coming into this episode I didn't really know much about service workers. I assumed there were very specific use cases for them, but Jeremy opened our eyes to the fact that they allow access to some very powerful browser features and are useful across the board. We also spoke about Jeremy's recently released A Book Apart Book 'Going Offline', I'm really enjoying it. I can't put it any better than Sarah Drasner (https://sarahdrasnerdesign.com), who said: "Jeremy Keith explains service workers with kindness, clarity, and humour in his new book, a must-read for any web developer who wants to learn this exciting new API and enable offline experiences for their applications." The first chapter is available as an A List Apart article, link below. There were some strong Jukebox Entries this time. Jeremy Chose Catastrophe And The Cure by Explosions In The Sky, from one of my very favourite albums. Ben chose The Celestial Garden by DrumTalk but apparently described a different track in the episode, he's a sleep deprived new dad so we'll have mercy on him for that. My pick was Bashed Out by This Is The Kit, a lovely bitter sweet track. Jeremy's and Ben's tracks are added to the Relative Paths Playlist (https://relativepaths.uk/pl), mine goes on the Relative Paths Alt Playlist (http://relativepaths.uk/altpl) for tracks with lyrics. Jeremy also plays slide bouzouki for Brighton based band Salter Cane. Link to their site is below, I'd definitely recommend giving them a listen. Esta semana toca mixtape en Soleado. Hay tantos temarracos del demonio por poner que ni hay tiempo para hacer bromitas sobre el master del universo de la Cifu o el juego de tronos de la Sofi y la Leti. Suena lo nuevo del grandísimo Jonston, This Is The Kit, Parliament y Shirt y lo no tan nuevo de Cy Gorman, Gecko Turner, Chris McGregor, He3 Project y The Lyman Woodward Organization.
Effortless storytelling is at the heart of This Is The Kit. And the stories the band's only permanent member, Kate Stables, weaves are profound but sweet with a tone that quietly reels you in.
