Folk singer Seth Lakeman on what inspired him to write the song Solomon Browne in tribute to the Penlee lifeboat crew lost at sea Seth Lakeman grew up surrounded by remarkable stories – whether that be through his father's career as a journalist, or spending weekends with his family immersed in music at local folk clubs. It was his passion for great stories – and tunes from the folk music community – that inspired his career as a singer-songwriter. Hear Seth talk about how he came to write Solomon Browne – a special song dedicated to those sadly lost in the Penlee lifeboat disaster on 19 December 1981 – and find out how friends from throughout his life have brought him even closer to the RNLI's lifesaving cause. One of the crew members sadly lost was Stephen Madron. In another episode from our 200 Voices series, Stephen's wife Janet Madron shares her deeply personal account of the Penlee tragedy, and why she still loves being an RNLI volunteer. Listen to Janet's podcast episode to hear her story. 200 Voices is produced by Adventurous Audio for the RNLI Interview by the RNLI's Rory Stamp Soundtrack composed and performed by Jon Nicholls The RNLI is a charity celebrating 200 years of saving lives at sea - find out more at RNLI.org/200
My guests this week are Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz, who join me to talk about their wonderful new record 'Nothing But Green Willow : The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry.' The album brings together a selection of British folk songs collected in Appalachia in the early 20th century by Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles. Alongside Martin and Thomm it features a range of incredible artists from both sides of the pond, including Sierra Hull and Justin Moses, Angeline Morrison, Odessa Settles, Tim O'Brien, Tammy Rogers, Seth Lakeman, Dale Ann Bradley and Tim Stafford. We talk about how the songs made their way to Appalachia, how (and why) Cecil and Maud travelled to the region to collect them and why this record is so important to both Martin and Thomm. It was a truly fascinating conversation and it's a superb record. I'd really urge you to check out the physical copies of this one as the packaging is amazing and features some really informative and fascinating liner notes. When Janet Madron attended the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, she wore something special – the medal awarded to her husband Stephen, who was lost in the 1981 Penlee tragedy Stephen Madron would do anything for anyone. He even came to Janet's rescue on the bus to the fair. Years later, she listened as the Coastguard called into the silence for the lost Solomon Browne and her crew. Hear Janet's deeply personal account of the Penlee lifeboat disaster – a story of one village's lost sons, and the hope their loved ones rediscovered. Janet shares why she still loves being an RNLI volunteer and talks about the honour she felt paying the RNLI's final farewell to our Royal Patron. Stephen was one of eight courageous men who were lost in the Penlee tragedy. To pay tribute to them, folk singer Seth Lakeman wrote a special song, Solomon Browne. Grammy-nominated guitarist, producer, and songwriter Thomm Jutz discusses his upcoming project with award-winning English guitarist Martin Simpson. The album, Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry, is comprised of ballads from English folklorist Cecil Sharp's 1916-1918 collection, English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, particularly those tunes from singers Mary Sands and Jane Gentry. On this album, Simpson and Jutz brought together a mix of roots artists from both sides of the pond—Sierra Hull, Angeline Morrison, Odessa Settles, Tim O'Brien, Tammy Rogers, Seth Lakeman, and more—to create an homage to the bridge from Appalachia to England and back, just as the songs of Sands and Gentry originally did. The album is available September 29th on Topic Records. Seth Lakeman is the Mercury Music Prize nominated singer, fiddle player and guitarist who will forever be associated with Dartmoor. He grew up in the village of Buckland Monachorum with his two brothers Sean and Sam who are also key players on the folk scene. In this episode Seth takes Matthew to the village church to re-create his 2004 recording "Cape Clear", to the local school to sing “An Educated Man” and to the hills above the Burrator Reservoir where he performs “Kitty Jay”, “The White Hare” and “The Courier”. November is the month of memories, and in an opening section we pay tribute to the dead of all wars, with six songs from various viewpoints of war through history. Later in the show our folk historian, Babba, lights the fuse on the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot – an infamous event remembered annually with fireworks and bonfires. And there's a specially-written song to commemmorate "the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions". We also remind you that the end of November is time for the Great British Folk Festival, so we preview the event with music from some of the artists appearing this year.
