This week, In Conversation celebrates the 60th anniversary of a television phenomenon which has captivated audiences of all ages. Doctor Who is loved by millions around the world. Aside from its official television incarnation, it's seen two feature films, three stage plays, five spin-off series, hundreds of original audio dramas and novels, and countless unofficial fan made magazines, novels, videos plays, and more than a few podcasts. Katy Manning played the role of Jo Grant in three seasons opposite Jon Pertwee's Doctor in the early 70s. Australian theatre audiences will be familiar with her time based in Sydney, when she appeared in such plays as Run for your Wife and Educating Rita, as well as her remarkable performance in Me and Jezebel. Katy shares some wonderful stories not just from her time in Doctor Who, but also her long and varied career in theatre and television. A NEW PRODUCTION OF Willy Russell's classic comedy Educating Rita has just opened at the Theatre on the Bay. It's produced by Tally Ho productions and the original music is written by Jonathan Blair. I invited Jonathan to the People of Note studio to talk about his score and also about his many commissions which include, opera, concertos, chamber music, song cycles and stop motion film scores. Although Jonathan was born in San Diego California, he new lives in Cape Town where he has collaborated with some of this country's most important artists.

Proust as an agony uncle, Romeo and Juliet rewritten as 21st century Welsh teenagers in a new drama by Gary Owen, the Lesbian coming of age novel by Rita Mae Brown that inspired the lead character in Willy Russell's Educating Rita to change her name and a new book inspired by the historical figures who collaborated on the first English medical textbook on homosexuality. Tom Crewe's novel The New Life depicts the married lives and love triangles of John Addington Symonds and Henry Havelock Ellis and the impact of Oscar Wilde's trial on their attempts to publish their study of what they called "inversion". Naomi Paxton is joined by Tom Crewe, Gary Owen and New Generation Thinkers Julia Hartley and Diarmuid Hester. Neena Kulkarni (neena Joshi) began her acting career in the 1970s on the Marathi professional stage and Hindi experimental stage, along with fashion shows and modeling simultaneously. She met Pt Satyadev Dubey, her first guru, and went on to be a part of several Hindi productions under his direction. Mohan Rakesh's Adhe Adhure, Shankar Shesh's Mayavi Sarovar, and Willie Russell's Educating Rita are a few of her prominent plays. Dr. Vijaya Mehta chose her to play Shabbo in Anil Barve's Hamidabai Chi Kothi in 1978, and thus began her long journey with Bai into the remarkable world of Marathi theatre with Mahasagar and Savitri. She continues to assist Bai in her workshops. Mahasagar, Akasmat, Dhyani Mani, Vatvat Savitri, Dehabhaan, Prem Patra and Chaapa Kaata are some more of her successful award-winning (Natya Darpan, State Awards, Natya Parishad recognition) Marathi plays. She directed the play Mahasagar in 2011, Educating Rita, Mahatma Versus Gandhi and Wedding Album - English plays.  She wrote a daily editorial column for Loksatta, called Antarang, for 3 years, and the same has been published as a book by the same name. Her prominent advertising commercials include Cadbury, Surf Excel, Parachute, Paytm, Mother Dairy and Maggie Masala. Her latest television show Yeh Hai Mohabattein recently completed 6 years of telecast.Her foray into digital content through a web series Breathe and Gond  Ke Laddu with Unpaused 2, short films Cuddly and Maa has won her much appreciation. Dear ones, My life is a f**king magazine. Pages of projects, my life, twixting and twaining. I've grown up in them. You are your experience, and in the same way that you are what you sleep with, you become what you do, I guess.I wasn't sure whether to hammer your inboxes daily with micro-content, a la Patti Smith, in the run-up to my biggest news to date (beyond Psychomachia) or to just throw it ALL down here.Because what I really want to share is our. Beautiful. Single. (You can nab a pre-order of here).But it feels more honourable to make a cover star award of Geoff Travis, founder of Rough Trade - arguably the most important indie label in the history of the British recording industry.  We met as judges on the Doc n Roll Festival, he memorably said, “I bet you like performing,” as we hustled together for a group shot. He's right. Just gotta stay away from manifesting drama in one's personal life, and love you what you do - but like all those Wellness Live Ya Best Life aspirational platitudes - how do you jump off the cliff by a bungy rope if you ain't stapled in financially?When I went back to university at 25, bounding in all Educating Rita, like a spring daisy from another nervous breakdown/rehab (again), I did a BA in New Media Journalism and Radio, it taught me to be pretty self-sufficient and DIY, editing across media, coding, I was working in BBC Radio as a researcher by the second year, reporting at celeb parties and on September 11th, before making radio documentaries for 1XTRA, R2, etc. Authenticity has become more and more apparent to my sanity over the years. I've taught Media Ethics, Broadcasting, Pop video courses, loads of zine workshops with victims of torture, and minority groups, after school clubs - that sort of thing before getting more and more quasi-academic, and wannabe Doctor, shifting between teaching vocational media work to City & Guilds, B-Tec, undergrads and some Masters (in a particularly sketchy institution).  I've also consulted internationally for cash. I've become more and more capable over the years, but it also means I am pretty multi-skilled and good at problem solving, but it also prevents me from working to true calling. As life does for most people who have to earn a living.  The reality of being a writer and performer is that without compromise to industry demands, you're on your own.Which flips me back to Geoff Travis -  there was a crossover period when I was still trying to lecture and edit Ambit (Ambit won in the end, despite it being a charity, and the money not being as good as teaching, I felt more committed to the responsibility of helming this great institution).I invited Travis to give a guest lecture when I was leading a class on the Music Industry to American undergrads (employed by the brilliant writer, Heidi Dunbar James).  I was surprised what I knew, despite having written about music since my early days, DJing etc, you may know from PSYCHOMACHIA, which examines  the patriarchal nature of the 90s music industry as fiction, I've been around it forever -  before editing Ambit I was the “Off The Floor” editor of the arts on DJMag, but have never felt part of the boys club -  despite knowing so many of the wheeler dealers who have hustled through life making money from music -  we all feel like outsiders sometimes. My DJ moniker took a non-female angle, K-Rocka - a nickname, and it was through doing a series of lectures about the music industry in the UK, I kinda realised that actually I'm likely qualified as much as anyone else -  but the guest lecture from Geoff Travis was landmark - I hope you may have time to listen to this founder of Rough Trade, I've added the lecture as a podcast here.  It's a masterclass in independence. He's very cool, casually reeling out how he didn't sign The Stone Roses, and being at one of The Strokes first gigs, and not knowing that one of The Libertines was going to end up a heroin addict. There's also the pain of board meetings, not really being in it for the money, and the backend of the music industry. It's solid - thank you to the students of that class for their questions…Gil and I started sharing our work live in 2018.   He's what one may call a “professional musician”, his first A&R was John Niven and he's been signed to major labels and produced John Martyn among others. He was performing with Little Barrie when we met, at a book reading for Tony O'Neill (who also used to work in music, playing keys for my friend Kelli Ali, but also Kenickie, Marc Almond and others. His first book, Digging the Vein was published by Wrecking Ball Press who put my novel out). Gil and I became friends after that signing, and in the maelstrom of our relationship, his band with Little Barrie imploded - as bands do - despite their only single as Pet Weapons being loved and played by Lauren Laverne.Gil commenced on The Long Road of who am I, why am I, etc.  The important road.We collaborated before we got together -  co-writing a poem that introduced him at Red Gallery, 15 December 2015.  And by NOLA, 2018, we were making a film for Jeffrey Wengrofsky's festival in NYC, me writing a poem, chalking it up in the streets, filmed, and Gil then made music to accompany it.  We later showed it at the Liminality show at Gallery46, first performing together there. We then played other galleries, like the Bomb Factory in North London. In Berlin, The Social, Pikes Ibiza.   We've now done a couple of tours.Our friend Martyn Goodace did the Das Wasteland compilation which was our first  release, on vinyl, from Berlin days…We met Blang! Records boss Joe, who works with Paul and Jules, Beth and La, with his wife, after the first show we did out of lockdown, in Sheffield at Sidney & Matilda, a great venue, supporting Band of Holy Joy. (There's a documentary about Blang! Records which is worth finding - about antifolk and why they started)The sound guy at Sidney & Matilda was good, turned me onto local hip-hop poet Otis Mensah - but in the basement, people were conditioned to not stand close to each other and it felt like we were defo sharing air.  By the end of the tour - it was a futile underground party of sweat-filled sardine dancing in venues in Edinburgh and North Shields.  But that first night, it was that kinda romantic dream: a record label coming up to you after a show and showing interest.  Blang! Records were later doing a residency at the Hope n Anchor is Islington and asked us to play.  We filmed the shows for them, and they offered to put out a single.  Initially it was suggested we did it with Pink Eye Club on the flipside, but we played them Rock n Roll Is A Deathwish, after they'd chosen Paradise Burns - that's what's coming.  There are 50 lathe-cuts. The artwork's by the brilliant Bert Gilbert - “northern Marina Abramović” -  who's showing at the forthcoming Horror show at Somerset House, curated by Jane Pollard and Ian Forsyth (who directed 20000 Days with Nick Cave).  We've done a beautiful UV spot bespoke print and they really are limited and beautiful. Bert used Gustave Doré as her main influence on the piece.  A modernised rising of a new enlightenment, we can but dream.David Erdos has been super-kind in his review of the single in International Times. Comparing us to everyone between early Dylan (the first record I ever DJed was Subterranean Homesick Blues), and my vox being halfway between Wendy James and Siouxie Sioux. Jim O Mahony is one of the most unassuming guests you could meet. Quietly spoken, a huge supporter of the arts in Cork, he works as a biologist in MTU, but he's also a gifted pianist. He's a talented actor, having just played the professor in Educating Rita to great acclaim in UCC's Aula Max. And by a quirk of fate, he sounds like Frank Sinatra. Career:As a stage actor, he has half a century's experience of working in theatres up and down the British Isles, and in English-speaking productions overseas. The mostly forgotten 1983 movie Educating Rita is Michael’s latest retro pick. Jared recommends two new films that just hit streaming services. Joe digs into the sequel entries of an enduring horror franchise. Michael revisits an acclaimed television series. The guys also discuss their favorite Michael Caine roles.

We both LOVED this adaptation of the Willy Russell play. Rita is a working class Liverpudlian who decides she wants a literature degree through the Open University; Frank is a jaded university lecturer who can't stand his middle class students. The film made us think more about the purpose of education, and the ways gender and class intersect in the university. 

This week, Brendan and Jason start off a new batch of 20 movies with their discussion of Lewis Gilbert's Educating Rita. They discuss Julie Walters' iconic film debut, how the movie plays with audience expectations, the weird synthesizer musical score, the way in which the film criticizes the educational system, the difficulties with writing the original play and much more. "I talk with veteran actor, write, producer, and teacher on his life in the art of acting." Inside the Episode with Mitch Hampton: "The diverse group of guests on our podcast encompass both those I have never met and only know from their work in what you might consider a "public" sense. Then there are those guests whom I have had the good fortune to know personally. I have never gotten to know the actor Austin Pendleton in a personal manner but I know for sure my first conscious awareness of him was most probably from his role in the Peter Bogdonavich masterpiece What's Up Doc (1972), which I saw on the big screen at the age of six, with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. I was not so fortunate to have seen his early 1970s musical or theatre work, yet it feel like I have seen him in so many television and movie productions as well as on Broadway (Doubles comes to mind from the 80s) and my now father produced his play Orson's Shadow, that I can confidently say that he has been such a large part of the world of both theaters, movies and t.v. that I feel that I grew up with him to the extent that one can group up with a "named actor." I never dreamed I would have had the opportunity to speak with him on this context in my own podcast. Austin Pendleton is, among many other things, what sometimes people call the real deal. He is one of the greatest living actors, period, regardless of genre or style of production. He is also beloved as a teacher of acting and playwright and director in his own right. It is always an honor to be able to talk to someone who cells at what they do artistically, especially if they are as generous as is Austin, as well a clear about his own life experiences and what they have meant to him. This summer marks 40 years since Willy Russell’s landmark play Educating Rita was first performed. The funny and moving story of a 26 year-old Liverpudlian hairdresser studying for an Open University degree has barely been off stage since. Dame Julie Walters played the lead role in both the original theatrical production and the later film, for which she was Oscar-nominated. She joins Jane to talk about what playing the role has meant to her, and how much Rita/Susan’s experience chimed with her own. Jane also speaks to Willy Russell about Rita’s story, and why he believes it has resonated with so many women. They are joined by four real life Ritas – working-class women who returned to education in later life, Glynthea Modood, Sue Slater, Kate Wiseman, and the Open University’s Pro Vice Chancellor Liz Marr.

On our final episode of this series, Martin McQuillan is joined by legendary playwright, Willy Russell. Taking a trip down memory lane, Willy recalls the horrors of school as a youngster in comparison to the joy he found in going back to education as an adult where he found his passion for writing. Having spent years as a musician, writing lyrics had become part of Willy's life but it wasn't until he went back to night school to study that the world of writing changed everything. "This lovely man treated us all as equals and adults and I remember in the first couple of weeks, he introduced us to Animal Farm - I'd never heard of George Orwell. I went back the next week and he said to the class, "of course, you do know that this book is an allegory," and I was learning to be a bit bolder and I said, "sorry, I don't know what that means". And he said, "well it's a story that's about one thing that is in fact about another. In this case the Russian Revolution right?" Brilliant! I mean, I'd just enjoyed it about pigs and animals, but suddenly understanding completely how it mirrored Orwell's take on what happened with totalitarianism...of course I became the world's biggest bore on Orwell."As we come to the end of series two, we'd like to thank you for your support and look forward to bringing you more guests of The Lonely Arts Club soon.

German police have made six arrests in relation to a planned knife attack at Sunday's Berlin Half Marathon. Newspaper Die Welt reported six men were detained - one of whom they suspected of planning the attack. Die Welt said the suspects were linked to Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist ties, who hijacked a truck in December 2016. Amri killed the driver and then ploughed into a crowded marketplace killing 11 more people and injuring dozens of others. Police said before the sporting event today there had been "isolated evidence that the detainees between 18 and 21 years of age might have been involved in the preparation of a crime related to the event". Die Welt quoted a "senior police leader" as saying: "We are still evaluating. But it was probably close." Spain’s Royal Family has long been plagued by rumours of tension between Queen Letizia and her mother-in-law, Queen Sofia. Now, a video of the pair appearing to clash over a family photo following Easter Mass has ignited claims of a matriarchal feud at the heart of the House of Bourbon. The royals were making their way out of Palma Cathedral in Mallorca on Sunday when Queen Sofia attempted to pose for the cameras with her two grandchildren, Princess Leonor and the Infant Sofia. Queen Letizia was seen repeatedly walking in front of the trio in an apparent bid to block the shot before approaching Princess Leonor and seemingly trying to dislodge her mother-in-law’s hand from her daughter’s shoulder. Princess Leonor then appears to become frustrated with the tussling and thrusts both of their hands away.  As the Catalan crisis rolls on Barcelona has become one of the EU's best-loved city-break destinations, famed for its 1992 Summer Olympics, trade fairs, football and tourism. Catalonia is one of Spain's wealthiest regions, making up 16% of the national population and accounting for almost 19% of Spanish GDP. Generations of people from poorer parts of Spain have moved there for work, forming strong family bonds with regions such as Andalusia. During this crisis, the Catalan economy has suffered. Thousands of businesses, including major banks and energy firms, have moved their headquarters out of the region. However, the EU has treated the crisis as an internal matter for Spain, deaf to the separatists' pleas for support. There have been warnings that the issue is damaging Spain's democratic credentials. The Economist Intelligence Unit, which compiles an influential annual democracy ranking, said Spain risked being downgraded from a "full democracy" to a "flawed" one over its handling of the situation. The UK Home Secretary has insisted that police have enough resources to tackle crime despite claims that government cuts are contributing to a spate of violence.  Emergency plans to extend stop and search are in a tough package of measures the Home Secretary Amber Rudd is announcing following a string of fatal stabbings and shootings in London in recent weeks.  Meanwhile a former police officer said that younger officers were 'afraid' to use stop and search, as figures showed its use has fallen.  ..... New ‘Offensive Weapons’ laws to be introduced within weeks will make it illegal to own so-called ‘zombie killer’ knives and knuckle dusters used by gangs – and allow police to raid homes to seize them.  The latest move reflects a change of direction for Mrs May, who has introduced a series of curbs on stop and search since 2010, claiming they are unfair to young black men, damaging to community relations and do not cut crime. Nearly two-thirds of ‘child’ refugees who were questioned about their real age after coming to Britain were found to be adults, an official report has found. In one year, 65 per cent of asylum seekers assessed after claiming to be juveniles were judged to be over 18. The report, by immigration watchdog David Bolt, revealed that the Home Office received 2,952 asylum applications from unaccompanied children in the year to June last year. Out of these there were 705 age disputes – around a quarter of the total – where officials suspected the individual was lying about their age. Of these, 618 cases were resolved and 402 – or 65 per cent – were found to be adults. If these asylum seekers had been treated as children it would have left councils and local taxpayers facing a care bill of millions of pounds a year. In the UK Donors and entrepreneurs have been secretly developing plans for a new political party frustrated with polarisation and grabbing for the centre ground. Up to £50million has been pumped into the project with a former Labour benefactor at the helm hoping to 'break the Westminster mould'. The movement believes in borrowing from the left and right for its policies and was set up by multi-millionaire LoveFilm founder Simon Franks, who says he is frustrated with political division in light of the Brexit vote. He has had full-time staff on the project for about year, The Observer revealed today, after starting initial discussion in 2016.  His company - Project One Movement for the UK - is said to be a probable vehicle for the scheme, which has the support of a number of former Tory donors.   A pensioner cleared of blame after killing an armed burglar may never be able to return home amid fears of a vendetta against him, police have told residents. Richard Osborn-Brooks, 78, and his disabled wife Maureen have not been seen at their £500,000 property since Henry Vincent died after a break-in last week. With the couple believed to be staying at an undisclosed location in fear of their lives, their house has been fitted with security grilles – and a police surveillance camera has been mounted on a nearby lamppost. According to residents, Vincent was part of a tight-knit community whose members have a reputation for violence. One of the extended Vincent clan shamelessly declared on social media a few years ago: ‘An OAP a day keeps ur bank balance at bay. The old b******s deserve everything they get.’ Maureen Lipman joined hundreds of furious protesters outside Labour HQ, saying said she could never return to the party with an 'anti-Semite at its head'. The Jewish actress said she was attending 'as a disenfranchised socialist' and agreed with a placard reading 'Corbyn made me a Tory'. Some 250 demonstrators gathered in Westminster today to criticise the Labour leader's approach to tackling anti-Semitism in the party.  Lipman joined their pleas for change at the protest, saying Mr Corbyn's conduct was 'appalling' and calling for him to resign. The 71-year-old, best known for her roles in Educating Rita, The Pianist and Oklahoma!, made a speech which was met with swathes of applause. 'He is standing with elements who are against everything that we stand for; hardworking, decent Jewish people of whom I am incredibly proud,' she said.  'By doing nothing he is telling us the same thing he has been telling us for the last 30 years.   'He wants a Marxist party. Because it's worked so well in the rest of the world!' She added: ‘Everything you have heard today points to the fact that we have an anti-Semite at the head of the British Labour Party.’ Lipman also attacked the Labour leader for attending a Seder organised by left-wing Jewish group Jewdas, saying it was 'the absolute cherry on the top' of his behaviour. These days sport is all about money. Gone are the glorious days of true sportsmen and women who competed against each other out of pure pride and sporting rivalry.  During the amateur days of yore, apart from a couple of countries who used events as propaganda exercises, I can’t recall any accusations of cheating by the competitors or officials. Nowadays they are all at it. Doping, drugging, betting and game throwing are now regular features on the back pages of the nationals. Hardly any corner of the sporting world has not been infected by this greedy virus that leads to the ‘win at any cost’ attitude that prevails among the athletes of today.  And you know what really sticks in my craw. Sooner or later they all seem to wheedle their way back in.  Even those who commit, what are to my mind unforgivable offences, are, after the authorities have considered their wrists have been slapped hard enough, allowed back in to carry on as though nothing has happened!

The UK Home Secretary has insisted that police have enough resources to tackle crime despite claims that government cuts are contributing to a spate of violence.  Emergency plans to extend stop and search are in a tough package of measures the Home Secretary Amber Rudd is announcing following a string of fatal stabbings and shootings in London in recent weeks.  Meanwhile a former police officer said that younger officers were 'afraid' to use stop and search, as figures showed its use has fallen.  ..... New ‘Offensive Weapons’ laws to be introduced within weeks will make it illegal to own so-called ‘zombie killer’ knives and knuckle dusters used by gangs – and allow police to raid homes to seize them.  The latest move reflects a change of direction for Mrs May, who has introduced a series of curbs on stop and search since 2010, claiming they are unfair to young black men, damaging to community relations and do not cut crime. Nearly two-thirds of ‘child’ refugees who were questioned about their real age after coming to Britain were found to be adults, an official report has found. In one year, 65 per cent of asylum seekers assessed after claiming to be juveniles were judged to be over 18. The report, by immigration watchdog David Bolt, revealed that the Home Office received 2,952 asylum applications from unaccompanied children in the year to June last year. Out of these there were 705 age disputes – around a quarter of the total – where officials suspected the individual was lying about their age. Of these, 618 cases were resolved and 402 – or 65 per cent – were found to be adults. If these asylum seekers had been treated as children it would have left councils and local taxpayers facing a care bill of millions of pounds a year. In the UK Donors and entrepreneurs have been secretly developing plans for a new political party frustrated with polarisation and grabbing for the centre ground. Up to £50million has been pumped into the project with a former Labour benefactor at the helm hoping to 'break the Westminster mould'. The movement believes in borrowing from the left and right for its policies and was set up by multi-millionaire LoveFilm founder Simon Franks, who says he is frustrated with political division in light of the Brexit vote. He has had full-time staff on the project for about year, The Observer revealed today, after starting initial discussion in 2016.  His company - Project One Movement for the UK - is said to be a probable vehicle for the scheme, which has the support of a number of former Tory donors.   A pensioner cleared of blame after killing an armed burglar may never be able to return home amid fears of a vendetta against him, police have told residents. Richard Osborn-Brooks, 78, and his disabled wife Maureen have not been seen at their £500,000 property since Henry Vincent died after a break-in last week. With the couple believed to be staying at an undisclosed location in fear of their lives, their house has been fitted with security grilles – and a police surveillance camera has been mounted on a nearby lamppost. According to residents, Vincent was part of a tight-knit community whose members have a reputation for violence. One of the extended Vincent clan shamelessly declared on social media a few years ago: ‘An OAP a day keeps ur bank balance at bay. The old b******s deserve everything they get.’ Maureen Lipman joined hundreds of furious protesters outside Labour HQ, saying said she could never return to the party with an 'anti-Semite at its head'. The Jewish actress said she was attending 'as a disenfranchised socialist' and agreed with a placard reading 'Corbyn made me a Tory'. Some 250 demonstrators gathered in Westminster today to criticise the Labour leader's approach to tackling anti-Semitism in the party.  Lipman joined their pleas for change at the protest, saying Mr Corbyn's conduct was 'appalling' and calling for him to resign. The 71-year-old, best known for her roles in Educating Rita, The Pianist and Oklahoma!, made a speech which was met with swathes of applause. 'He is standing with elements who are against everything that we stand for; hardworking, decent Jewish people of whom I am incredibly proud,' she said.  'By doing nothing he is telling us the same thing he has been telling us for the last 30 years.   'He wants a Marxist party. Because it's worked so well in the rest of the world!' She added: ‘Everything you have heard today points to the fact that we have an anti-Semite at the head of the British Labour Party.’ Lipman also attacked the Labour leader for attending a Seder organised by left-wing Jewish group Jewdas, saying it was 'the absolute cherry on the top' of his behaviour. These days sport is all about money. Gone are the glorious days of true sportsmen and women who competed against each other out of pure pride and sporting rivalry.  During the amateur days of yore, apart from a couple of countries who used events as propaganda exercises, I can’t recall any accusations of cheating by the competitors or officials. Nowadays they are all at it. Doping, drugging, betting and game throwing are now regular features on the back pages of the nationals. Hardly any corner of the sporting world has not been infected by this greedy virus that leads to the ‘win at any cost’ attitude that prevails among the athletes of today.  And you know what really sticks in my craw. Sooner or later they all seem to wheedle their way back in.  Even those who commit, what are to my mind unforgivable offences, are, after the authorities have considered their wrists have been slapped hard enough, allowed back in to carry on as though nothing has happened!
