More trade deals, just not with the US

Kia ora,Welcome to Friday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news there are more tariff-deals being done, of the free trade type, but just not with the US and their mutually punitive style. In the US, jobless claims dipped last week, mainly on seasonal factors. There are now 2,016,000 people on these benefits, +5.3% more than the 1,914,000 on them this time last year.Sales of new single-family homes rose marginally in June from May's seven-month low to be well below what market expected. The number of unsold homes on the market rose to 511,000, the highest since October 2007 and now almost ten months of supply at the current sales pace. The July US S&P Markit factory PMI fell back into contraction which was very unexpected because a rise in the expansion was expected. However, this was masked by a strong rise in their service economy in July. The Kansas City Fed factory survey slipped back into contraction in July after its rare expansion in June. They reported increased factory activity but new order growth was weak and order backlogs fell sharply. In Canada, their advance estimate of retail sales suggests that sales increased +1.6% in June. That more than makes up for the -1.1% fall in May and is much better than the -0.3% fall expected.Meanwhile in Japan, the same S&P Global/Markit factory PMI unexpectedly contracted in July from June's 13-month high but minimal expansion. A small rise was expected. In India, they are starting to see rising international demand in their factory sector, and this pushed up their July factory PMI to a strong expansion. And India has signed a free trade deal with the UK, one touted to bring NZ$10 bln in mutual benefits. Also expected soon is a China-EU trade deal.In Europe, the eurozone PMI for July reported a further increase in business activity during the month, with the pace of expansion quickening to the fastest for almost a year amid a stabilisation of new orders. Output growth was at an 11 month high for them. Cost inflation is easing.Meanwhile, as expected the ECB rate review decision delivered no change. This effectively marks the end of its current easing cycle after eight cuts over the past year that brought borrowing costs to their lowest levels since November 2022. And don't forget, they remain in a tightening phase because they no longer reinvest maturing bonds issued during the pandemic emergency. In Australia, the S&P Global/Markit factory PMI expanded slightly faster in July, on the back of the sharpest overall rise in new business in over three years. This was despite export orders still contracting. The same report shows price pressures intensified, hinting at higher inflation in Australia in the coming months. And staying in Australia, research by the RBA shows that international students play a significant role in the Australian economy. They contribute to demand through their spending on goods and services and are an important source of labour for some Australian businesses. When there are large swings in international student numbers or when the economy has little spare capacity, this means that changing international student numbers can affect macroeconomic outcomes, particularly in sectors of the economy where supply cannot respond quickly. The rapid growth in international student numbers post-pandemic likely contributed to high inflation over this period, but was not a major driver. But they do push up rents.Container freight rates dropped another -3% last week to be -57% lower than year-ago levels, although to be fair the year-ago levels were unusually high. Outbound rates from China to the US are the weakest routes at present. But bulk cargo rates rose another +11% over the past week to be +13% higher than year-ago levelsThe UST 10yr yield is now at 4.41%, up +2 bps from yesterday at this time. The price of gold will start today at US$3,369/oz, down -US$18 from yesterday.American oil prices are marginally firmer at just under US$65.50/bbl but the international Brent price is still at just on US$68.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now at 60.4 USc and unchanged from yesterday. Against the Aussie we have dipped -10 bps to 91.6 AUc. Against the euro we are holding at 51.3 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 67.8, up +10 bps from yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$117,232 and up +1.2% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been low at just under +/-0.9%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. That there are to be peace talks between Russia and Ukraine later this week in Turkiye, the first in seven weeks, is welcome news. The two belligerents sitting down at the negotiating table is crucial to end the almost three and a half years of conflict, as there is unlikely to be a decisive victory for one side or the other on the battlefield for the time being.Exactly when the talks will take place is unclear. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that the next round of peace talks will be held in Turkiye on Wednesday. However, Russia's TASS news agency quoted a source as saying that the third round of talks will take place on Thursday.Regardless of when the talks take place, that both sides are willing to engage in direct peace talks is still significant as negotiations are the only way to resolve the conflict. More than three years since the fighting commenced, the death toll and suffering show no sign of abating. An end to the fighting and a lasting settlement would serve the interests of both countries and the rest of the world.Given the complexity of the Ukraine crisis and the big divide between the two sides — Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two sides' positions were "diametrically opposed" — if the upcoming talks are to yield any positive results, both Moscow and Kyiv need to demonstrate flexibility. So far, Ukraine and Russia have held two rounds of talks in Istanbul, on May 16 and June 2, which led to the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war and the remains of dead soldiers. The lack of progress in making a breakthrough toward a ceasefire has not only disappointed the entire world but also eroded the patience of the United States administration, which was previously optimistic about cracking open the stalemate in talks.Greater international consensus and coordination are needed to consolidate the global commitment to resolving the Ukraine crisis through dialogue and negotiations. Yet, instead of shoring up such a consensus, some parties involved in the crisis are sowing seeds of division by staging a blame game unwarrantedly targeting third parties. In the latest deepening of its sanctions regime against Russia, the European Union on Friday adopted its 18th package of sanctions, which included imposing sanctions on some Chinese entities, with the EU claiming they have links with Russia's military operation in Ukraine. Two Chinese financial institutions have been targeted too, with the EU claiming they "helped circumvent EU sanctions".These sanctions have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council. The EU's ill-advised decision will have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations and financial cooperation. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman criticized the move, calling it "unacceptable".Prior to this, the US administration also threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on countries that do business with Russia if there is no peace deal to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days.Such attempts to dictate alignment with a set position do a disservice to efforts to promote a fair settlement of the Ukraine crisis. The EU and US should engage in some deep soul-searching about the root cause of the Ukraine crisis and the reasons for the protracted conflict, rather than indiscriminately assigning blame to others for a crisis that is largely of their making. It is known to all that NATO's relentless eastward expansion and Western orchestrated "color revolutions" on Russia's periphery have been primary causes of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Ukraine crisis cannot be allowed to go on indefinitely. Relevant parties should discard selfish calculations and join hands with other members of the international community to push for a peaceful solution to the conflict while the window of opportunity remains open.

China and the European Union are stepping up cooperation as the United States ramps up tariff pressure and global trade fragmentation deepens, signaling the shared commitment of China and the EU to openness, stability and mutual benefit in an increasingly uncertain world, experts said. Chinese investment in the EU surged 47 percent year-on-year to 10 billion euros ($11.4 billion) in 2024, marking its first significant rebound since 2016.2024年中国对欧盟投资额同比增长47%, 达到100亿欧元(约合114亿美元),实现自2016年以来首次显著回升。The growth, driven by record-high greenfield investment and a revival of mergers and acquisitions, reflects the enduring complementarities between the two sides, according to a joint report released on Wednesday by the New York-based Rhodium Group and German think tank Mercator Institute for China Studies. Greenfield investment is a type of foreign direct investment in which a parent company starts a business operation in a foreign country from scratch. Analysts said the momentum underscores the strategic importance of China-EU economic ties at a time when Washington's unilateral tariff hikes threaten to upend global supply chains. Strengthening cooperation in green energy, digital infrastructure and smart manufacturing will not only serve both sides' development interests, but also help safeguard the multilateral trading system, they added. China's greenfield investment in Europe increased for the third year in a row and reached an all-time high of 5.9 billion euros, while merger and acquisition investment more than doubled in 2024 to 4.1 billion euro, according to the report. Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, emerged as the leading investor in 2024, accounting for 16 percent of total investment, mostly from the ongoing construction of its battery plant in Hungary, the report said. Ding Chun, director of Shanghai-based Fudan University's Centre for European Studies, said, "China and the EU possess expansive common ground and enormous potential for cooperation in green energy, smart manufacturing and artificial intelligence." As of the end of 2024, EU enterprises had cumulatively invested more than $150 billion in China, data from the Ministry of Commerce showed. China and Europe should work together to safeguard the stability of the multilateral trading system and global industrial chains, rather than allowing trade disputes to spiral into broader geopolitical conflicts, Ding said. Last month, China and the EU floated the idea of lifting the tariffs on Chinese EVs through possible commitments to minimum prices, known as price undertakings for imported cars. A further increase in China's investment in Europe is possible in 2025, the report said, noting that EU-China ties could improve amid the US' new trade war. Simon Lichtenberg, the All China founding chairman of the Danish Chamber of Commerce in China, told China Daily that Europe has recognized the problems arising from being overly dependent on the US in the past and is now seeking to cultivate a more independent stance and perspective. This shifting mindset presents an opportunity for stronger China-EU cooperation, as both sides seek to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape, Lichtenberg said. China's manufacturing capability is truly outstanding, perhaps the best in the world," he said. As Canada heads to the polls on Monday, a historic shift in national identity and foreign policy is unfolding, driven by growing disillusionment with the United States and a renewed embrace of European alliances. Across Canada there is a strong sense that this crucial election is about more than domestic policy. It is being seen as a referendum not just on leadership, but on Canada's place in the world – particularly in terms of its increasingly strained relationship with the United States and a growing desire to forge closer ties with allies in Europe.“This election really matters,” said Shachi Kurl, president of the Angus Reid Institute, a Canadian, non-profit polling organisation.“More than nine in 10 Canadians say it's more important than the last two elections – and over seven and a half million have already voted early. That's huge, in a country of just over 40 million."From Trudeau to CarneyThe election follows the resignation of Justin Trudeau in January, after nearly a decade in office. While once a global liberal icon, Trudeau had seen his domestic popularity plunge, and by the end of 2024 his Liberal Party was trailing the opposition Conservatives by 30 percentage points. His departure set the stage for Mark Carney, the former Bank of England governor, to step into the political spotlight as the new Liberal party leader. But it wasn't just the change in Liberal leadership that shifted the political winds.“The other main character,” as Kurl put it, “was Donald Trump."Trump unveils sweeping US tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China - EU next?Trump's re-emergence on the US political stage – and his increasingly provocative comments about Canada – electrified the Canadian political conversation. He floated ideas about annexation, referred to Canada as "ripe for reabsorption", and reintroduced aggressive trade rhetoric – all of which triggered a wave of public backlash north of the border.“Canadians initially dismissed it as Trump being Trump,” Kurl told RFI. “But the more he talked, the more seriously people took it. There was real anger, a sense of betrayal – and the politicians who leaned into that emotion did well”.Nationalism, the Canadian wayCarney responded with a tone rarely seen in Canadian politics: firm, unapologetic nationalism. He rejected Trump's rhetoric outright, reiterated Canada's sovereignty and committed to defending Canadian interests – economically and politically.“We don't tend to do overt nationalism in Canada,” Kurl explained. “But this time, it worked."We saw a huge swing in the polls – from a 30-point deficit to a five-point Liberal lead today. And that shift is in no small part down to Carney embracing a message of pride and independence."What's changed most dramatically is the tone of Canada's relationship with the US, once its closest ally.Kurl notes that Canadian travel to the US has dropped significantly in recent months, a reflection of a more widespread cooling of sentiment towards the country's southern neighbour.“The US was Canada's best friend – not just its biggest trading partner, but emotionally too. And now people are saying, this just isn't working."And for Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, this has been a missed opportunity, as he ignored the Trump factor until the campaign was already under way.For Kurl, Poilievre's recognition of Canadian anger and disappointment with the US came "too little, too late".New Canadian PM in Europe to seek 'reliable partners' amidst trade war with USLooking towards EuropeIn Carney's first foreign visit as prime minister, he bypassed Washington opting instead to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The symbolism was clear: Canada is looking elsewhere for dependable allies. That shift is not just diplomatic theatre. The Carney-Macron meeting produced agreements on cybersecurity, clean energy and artificial intelligence, and reaffirmed both countries' support for Ukraine. This new strategic alignment has deep roots – particularly in Quebec, where cultural and historical ties to France have given the pivot to Europe added momentum and legitimacy.“It's not just short-term crisis management,” said Kurl. “Canada's been burned before by Trump. During his first term, we saw the renegotiation of Nafta and a lot of anti-Canada trade rhetoric. But nothing really changed – the economy remained heavily tied to the US. This time, there's a real sense that we need to act, not just wait it out."That said, a full break with the US is not on the cards.“There can never be a complete divorce,” Kurl concedes. “Our economies are deeply intertwined, and we share a very, very long border. But there is a renewed focus: Canada must diversify its economic relationships. It can't afford not to."French PM defends Ceta trade deal on visit to Canada, despite lawmakers' rejectionFor voters, this election is about who can best protect Canada's independence, its values and its interests, in an increasingly volatile international environment. As Kurl said: "Canadians are taking this election very seriously, because they know what's at stake. The question is no longer just, who should lead us? It's, where do we go from here?"

China has urged the United States to cancel its unilateral tariffs as quickly as possible, and get back on track to properly address differences through equal dialogue. If the US stubbornly pursues its course of a trade war, China will "fight till the end" to defend its legitimate rights and interests, Chinese officials said on Thursday. They didn't specify whether Beijing will again raise tariffs on US goods, which now stand at an additional 84 percent, in response to the latest decision by the US on Wednesday to raise the tariff on Chinese imports to 125 percent. 125%。The China Film Administration said on Thursday evening that the country—the world's second-largest film market—will moderately reduce the imports of US films. The US government's abuse of tariffs against China will inevitably lead to a further decline in the favorable perception of US films among the Chinese audience," the administration said in an online statement. "We will adhere to the law of the market and respect the choices of the audience, and moderately reduce the number of US films imported." He Yongqian, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Commerce, said at a news conference on Thursday, "Our position is consistent and clear—the door to dialogue is open, but any discussions must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and equality." However, she stressed the abuse of pressure, threats and extortion is not the way to engage with China. We hope that the two countries will meet each other halfway and work toward resolving differences through dialogue and consultation, guided by the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation," she added. She noted that the current bonded policies in the special supervision areas of China's free trade zones will still be applicable for US goods, specifying that taxes will still need to be duly paid once the US goods depart the designated areas and enter the Chinese market for sales. US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he was pausing his new tariffs for 90 days except on China. Trump said on social media that he had "authorized a 90-day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10 percent, also effective immediately". He did not specify which countries the pause would apply to, but he was clear that the levies would climb for China. Gary Winslett, an assistant political science professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, said: "The 90-day pause is a step in the right direction, but the trade war with China is still bad, the universal 10 percent tariff is even worse, the on-again-off-again approach is bad for investment and jobs, and we further undermined geopolitical leadership with nothing to show for it." Analysts noted that the Trump administration's 10 percent base tariff is still in place, suggesting that more rounds of tariff negotiations are ahead. The White House said that over 70 countries had come forward to negotiate tariffs this week. Luo Zhenxing, an associate research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of American Studies, said that the US' selective approach to different countries allows Washington to maintain its image, as removing tariffs across the board could be seen as a setback. In addition, it shows that the Trump administration is using tariffs as a tool and weapon, likely targeting China, Luo added. Such moves by the US have severely disrupted the global trade system. Regardless of future policy directions, key global trade principles like the WTO's nondiscrimination rule have been significantly undermined, potentially leading to a restructuring of global trade and even global financial systems, Luo said. Lin Jian, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, told a news conference on Thursday that China will never allow the international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system to be undermined. The US is placing its own interests above the legitimate interests of the rest of the world, sacrificing the just interests of all countries to serve its hegemonic ambitions, Lin said, adding that this will inevitably face stronger opposition from the international community. China and the European Union have recently exchanged views on strengthening economic and trade cooperation in response to US tariff hikes. The latest move came as Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held a video call on Tuesday with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic, during which they discussed various issues, including enhancing China-EU economic and trade cooperation and responses to the US imposition of so-called "reciprocal tariffs", according to a statement released by the Commerce Ministry on Thursday. Wang said that under current circumstances, China and the EU jointly upholding the rules-based multilateral trading system and staying committed to trade liberalization and facilitation will "inject more stability and certainty into the global economic and trade landscape". According to the statement, the two sides agreed to immediately start negotiations on electric vehicle pricing commitments, and resume the China-EU trade remedy dialogue mechanism. The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said on Thursday that China has the chance to establish a business environment that can provide the stability and reliability that investors require. On the contrary, the US is now rolling back on many of the principles that have underpinned its approach to global trade and investment, which has created unprecedented global economic uncertainty, the chamber said. retaliationn.

On Monday, the White House launched a review of its $9 billion in federal funding—weeks after stripping Columbia University of $400 million. Harvard's new president, Alan Garber, has acted swiftly: dismissing Middle Eastern Studies leaders, cutting ties with a West Bank university, and reinforcing academic diversity guidelines. Critics say it's not enough. Former Harvard President Larry Summers accused the school of ignoring Israeli perspectives, while faculty worry Garber is caving to political pressure. Princeton, too, is caught in the crossfire, with Trump pausing dozens of its research grants. Princeton's president calls it “the greatest threat to American universities since the Red Scare.” Garber warns that losing federal funds could cripple research, but with Trump's task force investigating multiple institutions, the battle is far from over. India Eyes Bigger Green Bond Target India is considering increasing its ₹25,342 crore sovereign green bond issuance for FY26, riding on investor interest. Green bonds, which fund renewable energy and climate projects, currently see a 2-3 basis point premium (“greenium”) over regular bonds in India, lower than the 3-8 points seen in developed markets. Officials expect higher returns this year amid global shifts towards sustainable finance. However, if investor demand falls short, the government may scale back. Since 2022, India has issued ₹58,000 crore in green bonds to support its 500 GW non-fossil fuel energy target by 2030. The coming months will determine investor appetite and the country's green finance trajectory. Manufacturing Rebounds, But Trade Risks Loom India's manufacturing sector rebounded in March, with the HSBC PMI hitting 58.1—its highest in eight months—driven by surging new orders. Strong demand and marketing efforts fueled the recovery, but concerns over potential US tariffs linger. President Trump is set to announce new trade measures on April 2, raising fears of weakened exports. A 20% tariff hike could shave 0.4% off India's GDP, according to Capital Economics. Inflation is also rising, with higher costs for copper, electronics, and rubber. The RBI, meeting April 7-9, may cut rates to support growth, but with Q4 GDP tracking at 6.7%, below its 6.5% target, economic uncertainty remains. IPL Drives Food Delivery Boom The IPL season is fueling a surge in food orders, with fast-food chains cashing in. Domino's sees no sign of demand slowing, doubling down on promotions like its six-in-one pizza. Streaming and TV viewership are soaring—JioHotstar reported a 40% spike in digital engagement, while TV audiences hit 253 million in the first three matches. Rebel Foods, which runs Wendy's and Oven Story, increased marketing spend by 10-20%, banking on the cricket frenzy. Last year, IPL-driven sales jumped 60-70%, and brands expect another blockbuster season despite broader economic concerns.

Singapore’s shares bucked the regional trend today as Asian markets fell hard on the back of US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs. The country imposes no tariffs on US products under the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement and was only subject to the baseline 10 per cent rate. The Straits Times Index (STI) was relatively little moved, falling about 0.5 per cent shortly after the open. In terms of companies to watch, we have OCBC after the bank announced yesterday that it plans to deploy £10 billion (S$17.4 billion) in financing over the next six years to support foreign direct investment into the UK. Elsewhere, from the impact of US tariffs on key Asian markets such as Japan, South Korea and China, to the implications of possible retaliation by the US largest trading partners – more international headlines remain in focus. Also on deck, how gold hit a record high today as investors rushed towards the safe haven asset. On Market View, Money Matters’ finance presenter Chua Tian Tian dived into the details with David Chow, Director, Azure Capital. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
