ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
What happened to the fairies? In this episode of Angela's Symposium, we uncover the history of fairy beings—from terrifying, liminal spirits associated with death, illness, and esoteric knowledge to the benign, whimsical figures of children's books and garden ornaments. Drawing on peer-reviewed scholarship and folkloric sources, I trace how fairies were feared as soul-stealing entities, morally ambiguous tricksters, and powerful beings of the Otherworld in Celtic and Germanic traditions. These entities weren't cute—they were cautionary, chthonic, and occasionally divine. But during the Victorian era, spiritualism, Theosophy, and literary romanticism reshaped fairy imagery into something innocent and controllable. This domestication served ideological purposes: reinforcing ideals of childhood, whiteness, femininity, and empire. With insights from Robert Kirk, W.Y. Evans-Wentz, Katharine Briggs, and contemporary scholars such as Sabina Magliocco, Morgan Daimler, and Richard Sugg, this video explores how fairies reflect changing cultural values—and why reclaiming their wilder past matters.CONNECT & SUPPORT

For this year's Solstice episode, we interviewed the indomitable Morgan Daimler about the holidays and misconceptions, and debunked some misinformation about where some of our holiday traditions come from. This was an enjoyable and thought provoking conversation that was very informative and revealing to the point where we want to schedule for Morgan to come back to continue some of the threads we picked up in this episode. The Outer Realm Radio welcomes the return of Morgan Daimler Hosts: Michelle Desrochers, Amelia Pisano Date: November 27th, 2024 Episode: 496 Discussion: Morgan will be talking about her newest book "Celtic Fairies in North America" Morgan goes on to talk about different types of Fairies, Folklore, differences between Fairies throughout the world, how do you know if a fairy is in your space, how to attract them, do fairy houses work? And more!!! Contact for the show - theouterrealmcontact@gmail.com Rumble: TheOuterRealm X - MicheleDerocher Website: www.theouterrealmradio.com Please Support Us : Like, Subscribe, Share and Comment! Thank YOU!!! About The Book: This book looks at the question of whether Celtic cultural fairies can be found in North America by exploring folklore across the last four hundred years through today. Stories of belief and personal encounters from Canada, the US, and Mexico show the flexibility of fairy belief and the way that these beings and ideas adapt to new places and times as they are carried along with the people who believe in them. Perfect for anyone who ever wondered if Celtic fairies can be found outside of Europe, what those appearances may be like, and what people have believed and do believe about fairies in diasporic communities. Fairy beliefs survived thousands of years of attempted suppression by religious groups. Celtic Fairies in North America shows that they survived and adapted to emigration, immigration, and the influences of popular culture. Welcome to the fascinating world of Fairy. Author and expert, Morgan Daimler is returning, bringing us more of what they've found in the field of fairy research and understanding, and assisting us to live respectfully with These Good Neighbours. Morgan is bringing her newest work, Fairy: The Other World by Many names, as well as The Fairy Faith for Children. We'll also take a look at what's happening in their fantasy fiction writing. About Fairy: The Other World by Many Names - The world of Fairy has intrigued humanity across folklore and literature for as long as we have written records and into the modern period. This book seeks to detangle the convoluted history of the world of Fairy by looking at the various cultural beliefs that form the basis of the wider view and explore how those beliefs interact and impact each other. We will explore the Irish Soal Eile, Scottish Elfland, English Fairy, and Welsh Annwn before delving into modern and popcultural understandings of this Otherworld so intrinsically bound to our own. About The Fairy Faith For Children - The Fairy Faith is a way to approach believing in fairies based in centuries of folklore. This book, written for children ages 8 to 12, explores what fairies are, what the Fairy Faith is, and how children can engage with these beliefs. Chapters focus on fairy belief, practices associated with those beliefs, stories of fairies, and an exploration of various specific types of fairy beings, and include several lists of suggestions for children to explore these ideas further. Perfect for children interested in fairies who want to engage with belief through folklore and folk practices. About Morgan - Morgan Daimler is a witch who has been a polytheist since the early '90′s. Following a path inspired by the Irish Fairy Faith blended with neopagan witchcraft. Author and folklorist Morgan Daimler returns to discuss the role of A.I. in reshaping folklore, leading to a potential future where cultural nuance is lost in favor of a bland tasteless gray goo! With the rise in popularity of A.I.-driven writing tools, nowadays we are witnessing never-before-seen transformations of cultural tropes into incoherent, conflicting and homogeneous gobbledygook. But is this truly a new phenomenon, or have we been diluting and mixing up folklore for centuries? Morgan and I also discuss the turmoils of researching the history of fairy belief, the influence of Christians and Victorians in reshaping fairy lore, and how modern nontraditional tropes make their way into not just our pop culture, but also bleed into the real world through anecdotal encounters with the Good Folk! Morgan Daimler and Cat Heath return to the podcast and answer listeners' questions about elves and fairies. We only got through half the questions in two hours, so we will record a part two episode in the future.
Morgan Daimler returns to Bigfoot and the Bunny! Morgan is the author of forty two books on subjects relating to Irish mythology, Paganism, and Fairies. She has contributed to multiple anthologies and magazines as well as taught workshops on these topics across the United States and internationally.
Morgan Daimler returns to the podcast and she and Barbara discuss how Madame Blavatsky's interpretations of fairies through the lens of Theosophy changed Western understandings of them considerably.
Author and independent folklorist Morgan Daimler joins to inspire us with a vast knowledge of Irish fairy lore. Since it is Valentine's Day, today we will be blending together fairy lore and supernatural inspiration to discuss the often overlooked (and misrepresented) concept of fairy muses. Kidnapped musicians, poet's dark muses, fairy lovers, and even imaginal offerings! Can our relationships with the Good Folk be the source of our creativity? May we be channeling inspiration from them? And if so, are our creative endeavors used to convey messages from beyond the veil? We may not know the answers, but we feel inspired enough to discuss the possibilities! In 1895, in Ballyvadlea, Ireland Bridget Cleary was burned to death by her husband Michael in the presence and with the help of her own family. Her crime? She was ill, and was suspected of being a changeling. Warning: this episode deals with talk of violence, abuse and murder.
Our StoryCana Cludhmor was a banfhile, an Irish woman poet of great renown. We know her story from only a few lines in Imtheacht na Tromdháimhe or https://www.google.com/books/edition/Imtheacht_Na_Tromdhaimhe_Or_The_Proceedi/KdWHNgAACAAJ?hl=en (The Proceedings of the Great Bardic Institution,) found in the fourteenth century Book of Lismore. Only mentioned briefly in the manuscript, we know that Cana Cludmor walks away from a dissatisfying marriage, and finds herself at a beach where the wind is playing in the sinews of a whale skeleton. She falls asleep to this otherworldly music, and when her husband discovers her and hears the lovely sound, he is inspired to construct the first harp. This retelling by Marisa Goudy stays true to the original, but imagines the characters' motivation (and adds the bit about the poet's curse, the bloodied hands, and the healing at the end). Our GuestMaureen Buscareno is a harper, a music educator, a podcaster, and the founder of https://www.moonoverthetrees.com/ (Moon Over the Trees Music & Theater Productions.) Maureen received her master's degree in Ethnomusicology from Ireland's University of Limerick. Passionate about bringing music to schools and to the community, Maureen received her master's in music education from Columbia University. You can hear more from Maureen on her podcasts: https://www.moonoverthetrees.com/podcast (HarpSong), https://www.moonoverthetrees.com/beat-your-heart-out (Beat Your Heart Out), and https://www.moonoverthetrees.com/theatre-aesthetics (Theatre Aesthetics). Our ConversationMarisa and Maureen connect as two American women with Irish heritage who both received master's degrees in Ireland at about the the same time (though it took a https://hudsonvalleywomeninbusiness.com/ (Hudson Valley Women In Business) gathering in 2021 to get them together!). In their discussion, they explore: The work of world-renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist Mícheal Ó Súilleabhain has been a profound influence on Maureen. He was her thesis advisor at UCL and reveled in the campus's location on the River Shannon, likening students and faculty to ancient Druids becoming one with the land, landscape, sounds and sights of nature. https://apoemforireland.rte.ie/shortlist/fill-aris/ (“Fill Arís,” a poem by Seán Ó Ríordán) that invites us back to the Irish language (even if it was a language spoken by distant ancestors) Marisa is dedicated to honoring the source of the story, which appears in an 1860 publication from the Ossianic Society. Modern versions of the story have turned the Cana Cludhmor, the banfhile (woman poet), into a “Celtic goddess of inspiration” and credited her with being the inventor of the harp.
