In Shakespeare's plays, he talks about “Travel” or “Traveller” just under 80 times, including references that suggest people travelled by foot and by horse, the Queen Mab speech by Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet talks about a wagon used for transportation, and there are references that indicate there were items which would add comfort to someone's travel, and one reference from Comedy of Errors talks about being “stiff and weary” from long travel. We also know that in a personal connection to William Shakespeare the man, playing companies often travelled around England visiting various inns and establishments of their patrons who hired out a production, this applied to the Lord Chamberlain's Men as well. With all of this travel, it begs the question of exactly what getting around England, particularly in a large group, might have entailed. What kind of vehicles would have been traversing the cities and countryside for Shakespeare's England? Were there paved roads, dirt paths, or maybe cobblestone streets? What about rules of travelling such as stop signs, round abouts, or other kinds of travel infrastructure? Whose job was it to decide where a road would be put, and then who carried the responsibility of maintenance of the paths? Could you get a traffic ticket in Elizabethan England? Here today to help us answer these questions, including sharing with us what kind of vehicles travelled along England's roadways in Shakespeare's lifetime, details about what the roads were like, and the rules for travelling them, is our guest, Robert Bucholz. English romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was born at Field Place in Warnham in 1792, spending his formative years at his family home. His family is well-connected with the Horsham District too. While he wrote famous poems such as Ozymandias, Queen Mab and To A Skylark and influenced many poets and writers, including Robert Browning, WB Yeats, Thomas Hardy and George Bernard Shaw, Shelley - whose second wife Mary Shelley authored the famous gothic novel Frankenstein - never knew fame during his lifetime. Despite Percy Bysshe Shelley's posthumous influence and literary reputation, many of us are unaware of the writer's connection to Horsham and know little about his life, other than his works. However, our guests for this episode - Carol Hayton and David Hide - directors of The Shelley Memorial Project - are among those hoping to change that. The Shelley Memorial Project wants to create a lasting public memorial to Percy Bysshe Shelley to commemorate Horsham's famous former citizen. To find out more, we gathered around a table at the Shelley Arms in Broadbridge Heath to talk about Shelley, his connection to Horsham, and the project's plans to honour him.

In all the annals of Fairyland nothing is more wonderful—and the annals are found in many hundreds of volumes—than that chapter which tells of the reign of the true fairy King Oberon and his beautiful wife Titania, who is sometimes called Queen Mab. Today's poem features a simple but satisfying sleight of hand. Happy reading.Richard Henry Horne (1802-1884), poet, was born on 31 December 1802 at Edmonton, near London, the eldest of three sons of James Horne (d.1810), quarter-master in the 61st Regiment; his grandfather was Richard Horne, secretary to Earl St Vincent. Richard was brought up at the home of his rich paternal grandmother and attended John Clarke's School where John Keats was also a pupil. In April 1819 Horne entered Sandhurst Military College but left in December 1820. In 1823 after reading Shelley's Queen Mab, he decided to become a poet.In 1825 Horne sailed as midshipman in the Libertad to fight for Mexican independence. After two years in America he returned to London, where in 1833 he published his first book Exposition of the False Medium and Barriers Excluding Men of Genius from the Public. In the next decade he published three poetic dramas, contributed prolifically to literary magazines, edited the Monthly Repository in 1836-37 and served on the royal commission on child employment in factories in 1841. His most famous year was 1843 when he published his epic Orion at a farthing a copy to show his contempt for public taste. It ran to six editions in a year and made him a celebrity. During the Irish famine he was correspondent for the Daily News. In 1847 he married Catherine, daughter of David Foggo. In 1852 Horne faced a crisis: his marriage was failing; he was impoverished; he was discontented in his work on Charles Dickens's Household Words; and he was torn between the practical and poetic sides of his nature. Tempted by dreams of fortune on the Australian goldfields and a chance to escape, Horne arrived at Melbourne in September. He soon became commander of the private gold escort and in 1853 assistant gold commissioner at Heathcote and Waranga. He was erratic in both posts and was dismissed in November 1854. By 1855 his English ties were severed, his wife having requested a formal separation. In Melbourne he became clerk to (Sir) Archibald Michie, and lived with a Scottish girl; their son, born in 1857, died after seven months. In September 1856 as a radical Horne contested Rodney in the Legislative Assembly but lost. As a commissioner of sewerage and water supply in 1857 when Melbourne's new reservoir was under public attack, he did little to appease the critics. By 1860 he was again unemployed and living at St Kilda with a female companion. He was well known at Captain Kenney's swimming baths, lectured at Mechanics' Institutes on 'The Causes of Success in Life' and failed to win the Belfast (Port Fairy) seat. He helped to found the Tahbilk vineyard on the Goulburn River. In 1862-63 the Royal Literary Fund assisted him.In June 1863 Horne was made warden of the Victorian Blue Mountain goldfield near Trentham: 'my Siberia'. Again he began to write seriously and found tranquillity. On visits to Melbourne he held court at Henry Dwight's bookshop, and became friendly with George Gordon McCrae and Marcus Clarke. In 1864 he published a lyrical drama, Prometheus the Fire-Bringer, and in 1866 for the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition a masque, The South Sea Sisters; it contained a rhythmic representation of an Aboriginal corroboree which brought acclaim. In 1867 he celebrated the arrival of the Duke of Edinburgh with a cantata, Galatea Secunda, signing himself Richard Hengist Horne, the name by which he was henceforth known. In Australia he produced no significant poetry but some good prose: Australian Facts and Prospects(London, 1859), and an essay, 'An Election Contest in Australia' in Cornhill, 5 (1862). Disillusioned, he sailed in June 1869 for England where he became a literary doyen, producing many new works all artistically worthless. His poverty was relieved in 1874 by a government pension, and he died at Margate on 13 March 1884.-bio via Australian Dictionary of Biography This is a public episode. The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: voicesoftoday.net/za9 The Necessity of Atheism By Percy Bysshe Shelley Narrated by Oberon Michaels Introduction by Henry S. Salt. Narrated by Oberon Michaels The Necessity of Atheism was first published by Shelley in 1811. In 1813 he printed a revised and expanded version of it as one of the notes to his poem Queen Mab. Shelley evinced a searing contempt for organized religion but maintained a belief in a benevolent non-sectarian World Spirit. in the opening statement of this pamphlet, he makes clear the nature of his qualified deism: "There is no God. This negation must be understood solely to affect a creative Deity. The hypothesis of a pervading Spirit co-eternal with the universe remains unshaken."
For our final Local Legends episode for Series 4, Martin gathers round the campfire to talk about the folklore of Sussex with Dr Paul Quinn.Paul grew up in Sussex, going on to complete his doctorate at the University of Sussex, working on anti-Catholicism and the Early Modern Stage. He has a wide array of interests, from Doctor Who and popular science fiction to the history of fairy tales, Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and the links between Catholic discrimination and magic. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship at Sussex University's Centre for Early Modern and Medieval Studies, he moved ultimately to the University of Chichester, where he teaches modules including ‘Fairy Tales: From Early Modern to Postmodern' and ‘Theatres of Pleasure and Theatres of Pain.' This week on The Literary Life Podcast we are pleased to bring you another “Best Of” series replay of one of our most popular episodes. Today our hosts Angelina Stanford, Cindy Rollins and Thomas Banks tackle the tough questions so many people ask about reading stories dealing with magic. First off, Angelina affirms the need to discernment and the desire to steer clear of that which would be a stumbling block for our children. Cindy shares a little about her own concern when her children were very young. Then they set the groundwork by defining some terms and considering the kinds of questions we need to ask, beginning with Scripture and the church fathers. Be sure to listen to the end when Angelina, Cindy and Thomas suggest some criteria for evaluating magic elements in books before handing them to their students. Commonplace Quotes: I am not conscious of having ever bought a book from a motive of ostentation. Edward Gibbon There is no language and no knowledge without symbol and metaphor. Two consequences arise from this: one is that we require imagination both to make and to interpret symbols, and the other is that symbols themselves beckon us through language to that which is beyond language. In other words, symbols are energized between the two poles (as Coleridge would say) of immanence and transcendence. Malcolm Guite Incidentally, we do not know of a single healthy and powerful book used to educate people (and that includes the Bible) in which such delicate matters do not actually appear to an even greater extent. Proper usage sees no evil here, but finds, as an attractive saying has it, a document of our hearts. Children can read the stars without fear, while others, so superstition has it, insult angels by doing the same thing. Wilhelm Grimm The Queen Mab Speech by William Shakespeare O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you. She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes In shape no bigger than an agate stone On the forefinger of an alderman, Drawn with a team of little atomies Over men's noses as they lie asleep; Her wagon spokes made of long spinners' legs, The cover, of the wings of grasshoppers; Her traces, of the smallest spider web; Her collars, of the moonshine's wat'ry beams; Her whip, of cricket's bone; the lash, of film; Her wagoner, a small grey-coated gnat, Not half so big as a round little worm Pricked from the lazy finger of a maid; Her chariot is an empty hazelnut, Made by the joiner squirrel or old grub, Time out o' mind the fairies' coachmakers. And in this state she gallops night by night Through lovers' brains, and then they dream of love; O'er courtiers' knees, that dream on curtsies straight; O'er lawyers' fingers, who straight dream on fees; O'er ladies' lips, who straight on kisses dream, Which oft the angry Mab with blisters plagues, Because their breaths with sweetmeats tainted are. Sometimes she gallops o'er a courtier's nose, And then dreams he of smelling out a suit; And sometimes comes she with a tithe-pig's tail Tickling a parson's nose as ‘a lies asleep, Then dreams he of another benefice. Sometimes she driveth o'er a soldier's neck, And then dreams he of cutting foreign throats, Of breaches, ambuscades, Spanish blades, Of healths five fathom deep; and then anon Drums in his ear, at which he starts and wakes, And being thus frighted, swears a prayer or two And sleeps again. This is that very Mab That plats the manes of horses in the night And bakes the elflocks in foul sluttish hairs, Which once untangled much misfortune bodes. This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs, That presses them and learns them first to bear, Making them women of good carriage. This is she! They say you should never look a gift horse in the mouth, but we're here to do just that. This episode we're investigating Willoughby's attempted equine offering, including a discussion of finances and the implied social significance of such a gift, as well as breaking down the meaning behind the name Queen Mab. Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome back to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast! Today we return with a Goblin Profile! But for this Goblin we are doing things a little different. This Goblin is so amazing that they needed 2 parts! The Goblin? Kiki-Jiki, the Mirror-Breaker. For part one we were joined by the Queen (Mab the Queen that is) to discuss a community that has embraced Kiki-Jiki. This specifically grew out of the cEDH Community and the trans-femme community. Part 2 delves a little deeper into the lore with the Gruulboss (aka Skylar) and look at Kiki through the lens of Autism! Again we would like to state that Black Lives Matter (with a link to where you can offer support both monetary and not). We also are proud to have partnered with Grinding Coffee Co a black, LGBT+ affiliated and owned, coffee business that is aimed at providing coffee to gamers. You can read more about their mission here. You can use our partner code for discounted coffee! On another new note we continue our partnership with The Fireside Alliance. Another special guest joins us this week! Josh Heath from Werewolf: the Podcast is here to talk about Werewolf: the Apocalypse and its synergies with Changeling: the Dreaming. What are some of the similar themes? Do the Garou and Kithain have shared history to call out? How should one set up a crossover between the two? We tackle these questions and more, and natter for a bit about the Auspice we'd all be (because WtA astrology is a thing). mirror images One of the interesting bits of connective tissue between WtA and CtD to bear in mind is that characters in each can often do similar things, but from different perspectives (metaphysically, spiritually, grammatically, etc.) Various kiths have the ability to change shape, as the Garou and other Changing Breeds do, but they're rarely doing it to go into battle or even commune with their nature. Delirium hides the actions of the Garou as a remnant of primal human terror; the Mists hide the actions of the fae as a form of preservation (and maybe also a bit of human terror). Each group has an otherworld they can enter with relative ease—though stepping sideways is usually simpler—and with which they have a deep spiritual connection. But those realms are entirely different in terms of their atmospheres, level of danger, their denizens, and the lessons they teach. Maybe most importantly, both groups lean heavily into the importance of social (Title/motley and Rank/pack) and familial (Kinfolk and Kinain) ties, but have very different structures for dealing with both their fellow supernaturals and mortal Kin. There are also lots of points of similarity. There are redcaps as bloodthirsty as any Ahroun, raiding a Pentex facility is something many changelings will support just as much as a werewolf, and songs and epic tales are arguably essential to the survival of both. Aside from the mechanics that have to be organized for a crossover game, bearing thematic links like these is important to have the game feel right. Players can explore what it means to their characters to see their comrade doing the not-quite-same thing as they do, and consider whether it's an opportunity for one or both of them to grow a bit. ... assorted crossover notes Among the X20 books, there's more about crossovers in C20 than W20 (Werewolf mystics "can apparently travel to Arcadia"?? but changelings who go with them fall into Malfeas??) (these are not recommended as story elements for your game), but more solid material can be found in the older books. Some assorted tidbits that might be helpful: While C20 has walked this back a bit, traditionally the Black Spiral Dancers have had dealings and occasional alliances with the Shadow Court. There are three Fianna Kinfolk families (two of Irish background, one of Breton) called "The Kin" who have high rates of werewolf and fae blood in their lineage. 3 out of 10 of their children are Garou (triple the rate of most Kinfolk families), 1 to 3 out of the remaining 7 will be Kithain, and the rest are likely to be Kinain (in addition to Kinfolk).A Fianna elder apparently lives at Caer Palisades and is Queen Mab's advisor on Prodigal affairs in the Kingdom of Apples.House Balor insists that the fomori are not the Fomorians or their agents, and are only threats to Prodigals; they would know the difference. We talk about why the Get of Fenris despises the fae (especially sidhe) so much in the episode, but trolls and the Nunnehi are specifically exempt from their ire.In addition to the other Changing Breeds mentioned in the episode (Ananasi, Bastet, Corax, Rokea), the Kitsune and the Nuwisha are popular crossover choices, due to their tricksiness. And on top of that, we do have an upcoming episode about Rage Across Appalachia, the specific Werewolf/Changeling crossover book! (Spoiler: it's mostly Werewolf.) ... where to find josh heath Some places online where you can find Josh and his work: Werewolf: the Podcast feed (https://keepontheheathlands.podbean.com/)!...as well as its Twitter (https://twitter.com/podcastwerewolf) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/werewolfthepodcast/)We should also use this as an opportunity to once again shout out Mage: the Podcast (http://www.magethepodcast.com), of which Josh is technically a host......but also, for all things Trinity Continuum related, check out the OpCast (https://anchor.fm/opcast/)!Stealing shamelessly from the show notes of Mage: the Podcast's chat with Josh, here's a list of the many projects he's contributed to on Storyteller's VaultJosh can also sometimes be found in various places on Discord, distributing truth and beauty about the Garou Nation like a Jaggling in the night ... your hosts Josh Hillerup (he/him) asks, "Werewolf?" Pooka G (any pronoun/they) responds, "There. There, wolf. There, castle," thinking Josh wanted to talk that way. ... "The dream is not like the world of flesh... O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? HE'S HERE, PAL! Jen, Yosra and Mick recall teenage loins being aflame as, courtesy of Jen's pick, they watch Baz Lurhmann's 1996 take on the 424-year-old romantic tragedy and are reminded just how damn pretty Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes were as the star-crossed lovers. Obviously, Lurhmann gives big Bill a nod in the film's title, but how does his mangling of Sheakespeare's text, frenetic camerawork and extended MTV video vibes stand up 25 years on? Does the fish-tank scene still make us all woozy? And does anyone know what Mercutio's wanging on about in that Queen Mab speech? Find out.
Welcome to this week's episode of The Literary Life Podcast! Come back next week when we will explore Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Don't forget to check out our sister podcast, The Well Read Poem, as well as Cindy's new podcast, The New Mason Jar! In Part 3, Professor Simon Palfrey offers close-readings of some of the play's most significant scenes. You'll hear the play's dark energies emerge through Mercutio's speech about “Queen Mab”; see how Juliet discovers a new, eroticized vision of the world and of herself as she awaits her wedding night, and witness one of the most iconic scenes in literature, when Juliet on her balcony imagines the possibility of love transforming identity: “What's in a name?” Speeches and performers: Mercutio, 1.4, “O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you …” (Mark Quartley) Juliet and Romeo, 2.2, “O Romeo, Romeo …” (Katy Stephens) Juliet, 3.2, “Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds …” (Katy Stephens)

The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/au/en/audiobook/alastor-3 Alastor Or the Spirit of Solitude And Other Poems By Percy Bysshe Shelley Narrated by Denis Daly This meditation on artistic creativity was written during the latter months of 1815, during a sojourn on the border of Windsor Forest. Critics have concurred in the opinion that the anonymous hero of the poem is Shelley himself, who feared that he too would become an "inheritor of unfulfilled renown." Today, the poem is considered to be the first major work of Shelley's maturity. Appended to the collection were a number of shorter pieces: 1) To Coleridge 2) Stanzas — April 1814 3) Mutability 4) The pale, the cold, and the moony smile 5) A Summer-evening Church-yard 6) To Wordsworth 7) Feelings of a Republican on the Fall of Bonaparte 8) Superstition 9) Sonnet from the Italian of Dante 10) Translated from the Greek of Moschus 11) The Daemon of the World The final poem is a reworking of the first two cantos of a much larger work, Queen Mab, which was first published in 1813.

TESTO DELL'ARTICOLO ➜ http://www.bastabugie.it/it/articoli.php?id=6651IL FILM SULLE FATE...

Stories of fairies are prominent in Irish folklore, and the belief in a fairy hierarchy, or fairy royalty, has been a popular notion for centuries. But while much has been written about the Fairy Queen (often named Titania or Queen Mab), the Fairy King is a more mysterious figure.

Suspicion, a cautious distrust. If anyone knows how to foster suspicion, it’s Alistair Hounsdstooth. In this business, cautious distrust is what gets you in the door. Their expectation for you to overperform, overdeliver. Everybody loves an underdog, so why not play a little below the table? The trick is to make whatever story you’re selling half believable, even if none of it’s true. Create the narrative. Create suspicion. Create an opening. It all went to plan, the Vehement. A little bloviating, a trumped up story oversold with sympathy. Just a couple of Queen MAB’s subjects looking for an edge, help from a kind soul. Sure he met us at the door with his sidearm on, but why let that stop a little polite conversation? “The Wingard’s Anchor assembly plant in the Cydonian sector went dark a few days ago. House Wingard is furious, obviously.Last transmission from security was a run-of-the-mill all hands call for the night shift. After that, nothing. No one in, no one out, not even the factory techs. Anything that gets close to the place in plain view either gets shot down or blown up by something on-site. Something that hits very, very hard. Most likely a number of Anchors rolled the factory overnight, though no demands have been made and no allegiances declared. We don’t know who’s sponsoring the other side but they paid for some premium muscle.Letter of the contract from Queen MAB says get planetside, assess the situation, and pacify the targets so the Gentry can get back to making their money. I’ll leave the definition of “pacify” to your discretion. That’ll be all, people.”-Ambrose Belgarde, Captain of the Vehement, Briefing Minutes Section C*In today’s episode, we get into our first session of actual play after a quick refresher on the system. Our luck is all over the place this week as a mission to a Martian gulch brings back old anxieties in Scarlett, Bete’s Anchor takes a beating, and Otto’s first engagement leaves him wondering if he’s really cut out for life among the freelancers. Will the team pull itself together or be blown apart? Yes, a thousand times, yes! Check out our sponsor at www.warforthetower.com! This episode is getting into some pretty fun elements now, because we run across Queen Mab (after a wonderful reunion with Toot-Toot that RoShawn was just saying she kinda wanted) and the Queen is calling in one of the three favors that Harry has promised her. He tries to decline, and she successfully...ah...persuades him to reconsider. Then Mab vanishes, and Harry is left face-to-face with not one, not two, but three of the Gruffs that are after him for as yet unknown reasons, and he has to think fast to get out of it. He only just manages to dodge them, but he knows that his luck has to be running low. Thanks so much to everyone for listening, and I hope you enjoy the show!

The original Luddites were British weavers and textile workers who objected to the mechanical advancements of the Industrial Revolution. When the economic pressures of the Napoleonic Wars made the cheap competition of early textile factories particularly threatening to the artisans, a few desperate weavers began breaking into factories and smashing textile machines. They called themselves “Luddites” after Ned Ludd, a young apprentice who is said to have wrecked a textile apparatus in 1779. In his newest work, Peter Linebaugh tells the story of Queen Mab, who through her personification in Shelley's poem of that name composed in 1812, becomes the symbol of a radical critique of western civilization as a whole. Today, we have a conversation with Peter Linebaugh about the effects new technology and capitalism had on the Luddites. Guest: Peter Linebaugh is an American Marxist historian who specializes in British history, Irish history, labor history, and the history of the colonial Atlantic. He is also a professor emeritus of history at the University of Toledo, as well as a member of the Midnight Notes Collective. He has authored several books including his most recent, Incomplete, True, Authentic, and Wonderful History of May Day and his pamphlet Ned Ludd & Queen Mab: Machine-Breaking, Romanticism, and the Several Commons of 1811-12. I'm sorry we had to miss last week, but we're back this week and I'm going to try my best not to miss next week even though I'm sick because I WANT TO HEAR WHAT ROSHAWN THINKS ABOUT THE NEXT PART. You all know what I'm talking about. This section is when Harry & Co. get to Arctis Tor, with a little help from the Summer Court. Lily can't travel into the heart of winter and must stay behind, but she gives Harry one of her fiery butterflies to keep the group warm and light the way. Meanwhile, something serious has happened at the castle, some kind of attack, and Harry can sense that Hellfire was used. What on earth went on here? They battle to the top and find Molly, only for an old enemy to step out and get in their way. Luckily, Lily's gift looks like it's going to be pretty handy. Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you soon with a new episode!

Moby Dick: Chapter 26: Knights and Squires, Chapter 27: Knights and Squires, Chapter 28: Ahab, Chapter 29: Enter Ahab; To Him, Stubb, Chapter 30: The Pipe, and Chapter 31: Queen Mab.
It's time for the chapters where Harry finally starts to get a clue as to what's going on with the necromancers, thanks in large part to the generosity of Queen Mab. Turns out, the deal that Harry thought he had with Mavra is pretty much bullshit because what she's asked him to do will inevitably result in his death as well as the death of everyone he loves and cares about, including Murphy, whom he thought he was protecting. So yeah, Mavra can kick rocks and Harry is going to do all he can to keep the Word from falling into the wrong hands. Only problem is, he doesn't know how to get the Word first, and the only piece of information he has is a bunch of numbers that don't mean anything to him. Hopefully they don't mean anything to the necromancers, either, or else Harry is in big trouble. Oh wait. There's a horde of undead chufflign towards his house. I guess he's already in big trouble. Thanks for listening, and we will see you next week!

It’s only episode #4 and we’re changing stuff around. On this episode we’re not just verbal vomiting idea after idea we’re picking a topic and sticking with it through thick and thin…. No matter how bad it gets. FAYE IN SPAAACCCEEEE. Yup, you read that right we’re going there. Maybe Dave and Gary really should let us get some sunshine; we’re starting to go buggers. Just to show how crazy we're getting we didn't do a Behind the Screen.... Nope...none of us was put on the spot after we finished collaborating on a total epic yet anti-climatic story idea. Please note: We are unscripted. We ramble. We get off topic. We are rude. We are often off color and we laugh loudly... a lot. You've been warned! NPC's in this episode: Queen Mab, King Titania, Captain and Puck. Chapter 031 - Queen Mab by Mr. Herman Hawthorne
For this month's Wildcard we're trying out a new format - Prose and Verses. In each P&V episode, one of the boys will take a controversial position on a Shakespearian matter and the other will defend what is perceived to be the popular opinion on the issue in a Lincoln-Douglas-inspired long-form debate For this inaugural attempt at Prose and Verses, the case on the docket is "K. Condardo v. The Queen Mab Speech." www.noholdsbard.com noholdsbardpodcast@gmail.com patreon.com/NoHoldsBard @NoHoldsBardCast facebook.com/NoHoldsBardCast
This week we’ll see is’t real, get drummers drumming, and plot how we’re going to squeeze our way into the relationship between Second Sight Spirits and Froghammer Shakespeare, who just collaborated to release a hazelnut liqueur called “Queen Mab” that we don’t understand why we haven’t received a courtesy bottle of yet. www.noholdsbard.com noholdsbardpodcast@gmail.com patreon.com/NoHoldsBard @NoHoldsBardCast facebook.com/NoHoldsBardCast
Mercutio – Romeo & Juliet – Act I scene 4
This week we’ll trouble our brains, foil Queen Mab, and defend the University of Southern California’s definitely-intentional choice to spell Shakespeare without the final “E” on a statue at the centerpiece of their recent $700 million facility upgrade. www.noholdsbard.com noholdsbardpodcast@gmail.com patreon.com/NoHoldsBard @NoHoldsBardCast facebook.com/NoHoldsBardCast
In "Romeo and Juliet," Mercutio becomes the tipping point that turns this tale of two star-crossed lovers from a romantic comedy to a tragedy. Episode 11 delves into what kind of friend Mercutio is to Romeo, various approaches to his famed Queen Mab speech, imaginings of Mercutio’s own romantic history, and why Mercutio — after speaking in only four scenes — remains one of the most memorable and beloved parts of this iconic play. Guests on this episode are André Martin, who played Mercutio with the Independent Shakespeare Company in Los Angeles in 2014; Brian Grey, who plays the role in Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s current production; and Martine Kei Green-Rogers, assistant professor in the Theater Arts department at State University of New York at New Paltz and President-Elect of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.

"Here will we sit and let the sounds of music / Creep in our ears" (The Merchant of Venice, 5.1.63-64) How can young people connect with Shakespeare? It's a question that confronts each generation. Members of Taffety Punk, a Washington, DC, theater company, have taken to heart the mission of bringing Shakespeare into the 21st century. Rebecca Sheir, host of our Shakespeare Unlimited series, talks with Taffety Punk founding member and Artistic Director Marcus Kyd about how he and a group of classically trained actors—who are also ex-punk rockers—are giving new meaning to the term "band of players." From Bootleg performances of Shakespeare's plays—rehearsed and staged in a day—to Riot Grrrls all-female Shakespeare, recordings of punk versions of Shakespeare's Sonnet 71 and Mercutio's "Queen Mab" speech from ROMEO AND JULIET, and the Generator series of experimental works, Taffety Punk is defining Shakespeare for a new generation of theatergoers and theater makers. Marcus Kyd is a founding member and artistic director of Taffety Punk Theatre Company. Taffety Punk Theatre Company's mission is to establish a dynamic ensemble of actors, dancers, and musicians who ignite a public passion for theater by making the classical and the contemporary exciting, meaningful, and affordable. Taffety Punk received the John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company at the 2008 Helen Hayes Awards. ---------------- From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. © Folger Shakespeare Library. Introduced by Peter Donaldson, Recorded by John Braden, WOMR , Edited and Mixed at dBs Music'I have written a blasphemous book', said Melville when his novel was first published in 1851, 'and I feel as spotless as the lamb'. Deeply subversive, in almost every way imaginable, Moby-Dick is a virtual, alternative bible - and as such, ripe for reinterpretation in this new world of new media. Out of Dominion was born its bastard child - or perhaps its immaculate conception - the Moby-Dick Big Read: an online version of Melville's magisterial tome: each of its 135 chapters read out aloud, by a mixture of the celebrated and the unknown, to be broadcast online, one new chapter each day, in a sequence of 135 downloads, publicly and freely accessible.Starting 16 September 2012!For more info please go to: www.mobydickbigread.com
