Orfeo Vecchi was held in high regard by his contemporaries for the sacred music he produced towards the end of the 16th century. Raymond Bisha introduces a new recording of the twenty pieces that comprise his third book of Motets for Six Voices. The works form a rich, eclectic programme, and the performances by Cappella Musicale Eusebiana directed by Don Denis Silano elegantly express the pictorial aspects of the texts that Vecchi achieved through subtle dialogue, antiphony and counterpoint.

Motets - Bach & Poulenc is a performance featuring sacred music compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), two composers from different periods in classical music history, each with distinct styles and influences. In this concert presented by the VerSeS Music Ensembles, we will be treated to two (of only six) of Bach's motets composed in the 1700s, namely, Komm, Jesu, komm (BWV 229) and Jesu, meine Freude (BWV 227), and then jumping ahead two centuries, we will hear Poulenc's Quatre motets le temps pour Noël. We find out more about what's in store by this performance from Scott Woo, the director/ tenor of the performance, and UK-based guest collaborator, Ibrahim Aziz, who specialises in the performance of baroque, renaissance and contemporary music for the viola da gamba.

So gelingen z.B. (mg)

DescriptionThe majority of modern music we hear today would not have been possible without the development of Polyphony in the 12th and 13th centuries. Much of this was accomplished through the innovation of The Notre Dame School in Paris. Take a minute to get the scoop! Listen to a great example of Pérotin's organum quadruplum—four-voice polyphony ℅ YouTubeFun FactThe earliest motets are the Notre-Dame motets, written by composers such as Leonin and Perotin during the 13th century. These motets were polyphonic, with a different text in each voice, and employed the rhythmic modes. An example of a Notre-Dame motet is Salve, salus hominum/O radians stella/nostrum by Perotin, composed between 1180 and 1238.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. Choral music formed an important part of Anton Bruckner’s output throughout his career, even though the genre was widely underappreciated by a public more inclined to large-scale symphonic and operatic works. Although the big-boned structure of such music also made its presence felt in Church masses and oratorios, there was always a need for smaller sacred choral works, not only because of listeners’ preferences but also because of pragmatic performance considerations. Raymond Bisha introduces a programme of Bruckner’s Latin motets that were composed to meet these demands, performed by the renowned Latvian Radio Choir conducted by Sigvards Kļava.

What is a motet? Where did this musical genre come from? What has the word "motet" meant throughout history? What can motets of the past teach us about incorporating non-obligatory texts into the sacred liturgy? How can the music and texts of motets make the other texts of the Mass, especially those of the lectionary, come to life? We explore these questions with Dr. Aaron James, the Director of Music for the Toronto Oratory of St Philip Neri, serving the music program at Holy Family Church in Toronto. “he returned refreshed to his monograph upon the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus” [BRUC]  Perhaps you recall Watson mentioning in the midst of "The Bruce-Partington Plans" that Sherlock Holmes took his mind off of things while waiting for crucial information by losing himself "in a monograph which he had undertaken upon the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus." Perhaps you've wondered who Lassus was. That would be Orlande de Lassus (or Orlando di Lasso), a Renaissance composer, who along with Palestrina, was one of the most influential musicians of the late 16th century. But what did a "polyphonic motet" sound like? And what were these motets composed for? And why should Sherlock Holmes have an interest in them? We have the answer to all of these questions and more from Ann Margaret Lewis, herself a Sherlockian and a soprano who performs liturgical music. Ann joins us to get us hooked on phonics, to explain the relevance of this beautiful music, and to identify a clip from the Jeremy Brett Granada series. Episode 13 features an incredible interview with Glen Soderholm. Glen is the pastor of Two Rivers Church in Guelph, Ontario. Two Rivers began as a single house church of what he calls “a collection of strays, orphans, and exiles,”  born from the idea of actually being neighbours with the people you live close to. He had so much to share about the Spiritual life, including his theology of Spirituality and the very practical things he does.As an accomplished musician, Glen spoke about the role of music in the Spiritual life and shared his love for some musicians that you may not have heard of. There are some links below to some of them. Check them out! There is a discussion of icons, which is fascinating, and I've included in these notes images of two mentioned in the episode.Glen has an amazing way of remembering quotes. Check out the quotes section below to read some of what Glen said. Some of what we talked about:Spirituality is being included in the Triune communion of God.What it means to listen to God? How do we listen in our inner life.Being limited by a cognitive approach to spirituality.Healthy spirituality begins to integrate all the senses.Icons - what are they and how are they helpful? How prayer life and spirituality changes over time.Having a prayer binderJournalingThe power of habit regardless of how we feel, but not driven by guilt. The idea of Jesus being our great high priest. That Jesus prays for us! The Spirit intercedes for us. Two thirds of the Trinity are already praying for us!It is not about persuading God. God is pursuing us and longs for a connection with us.Memorizing Scripture, in particular PsalmsThe role of music in Spirituality (see links below!)Quotes from Glen Soderholm in the Podcast“In this day and age, the last person we expect to be our neighbour, might be our actual next door neighbour.”“Spirituality is a gift that comes to us from God. God is the initiator in the spiritual life.”"Creation is the result of the overflow of God's life of love.”"Spirituality means talking to ourselves in healthy ways."A Prayer that he uses every day...I am the beloved child of God the Father. I am the beloved friend of God the Son. I am the beloved Temple of God the Holy Spirit. I am enfolded in the Three in One.Quotes from Others"Prayer is the gift of participating through the Spirit in the Son's communion with the Father.” - James Torrence"Prayer is listening to God tell you that you are the beloved child.” - Henri Nouwen“It is you that lights my lamp, the Lord, my God, lights my darkness.” - Psalm 18:28“Prayer is not overcoming God's reluctance. It is laying hold of God's willingness.” - Julian of Norwich“The energy of reconciliation is the dynamo at the center of the universe “ - Eugene PetersonMusic RecommendationsPalestrina (listen to Palestrina's Motets for 5 voices on YouTube)Bach  (listen to Bach's Magnificat on Youtube)John Tavener (listen to Tavener's Fragments of a Prayer on YouTube)Henryk Gorecki (listen to Gorecki's Totus Tuus on Youtube)Arvo Part (listen to Arvo Part's Magnificat on Youtube)Bifrost Arts - https://bifrostartsmusic.bandcamp.com/ This is a public episode. Two musical giants of the Romantic era, Brahms and Bruckner were often seen as being aesthetically and ideologically opposed. So it's fascinating to compare their choral works on a beautifully sung new disc from Tenebrae and its conductor Nigel Short. Hear clips from the recording and find out more about the music with editor Oliver Condy and reviews editor Rebecca Franks in this podcast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
