This is a bit different than our usual Halloween adjacent episodes -- we're talking about the rise of romance centered around ghostly secondary characters (Jen) and funeral homes and mortuaries (Sarah). These two themes have become more and more prevalent in romance over the last few years, and we talk about how and why they've risen and what they might mean -- considering the way romance reflects the world we live in. We talk about the pandemic, about grief, about community and about the way humor and love find their ways into the cracks left by death. If you want more romance content, maybe you want to join our Patreon, where you get another episode from us each month, and access to the incredible readers and listeners and brilliant people on the Fated Mates discord! The very first Righteous Brothers release was "Little Latin Lupe Lu" in '62. It has a slight rockabilly/surf feel, with the great vocals we came to expect, plus the immortal love song line, "She's My Mash Potato Baby"! In 1964, our frat friends The Kingsmen trashed the song, a la "Louie Louie." It's clubfooted, stiffarmed, not soulful, and great. We follow that up with two versions by TWO Dimensions! The first one from Chicago, with some tetanus tambo, and the second a NC band who waxed the track in 65, and it's a hot-footin' verzh fer sher. We also feature a hearsecore rendition from 66 by The Morticians and Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels hit version, that you heard all about in "High Fidelity" - shake it shake it!!

Mortuary schools began as embalming schools, sponsored by embalming chemical companies. Today, mortuary schools are designed to be more holistic, covering everything a new mortician may face in the industry. But what groups are being left out of this education? The last decade has brought hard discussions around serious gaps in what is taught to students and if they're ready for the reality of working in the death industry. In this episode Caitlin talks with two funeral directors, Joél Maldonado and Ezra Salter to discuss race and gender in funeral education and practice. The Morticians are once again joined by special assistant Anirudh Pi for an entire episode devoted to dissecting Matt Reeves' red-hot vigilante crime thriller: ‘The Batman'
This session is the first of Season #3, A Close Call With Death, providing some personal commentary and a personal close call as this new season gets kicked off. I wanted to first thank all of our listeners from Season 1 and 2 and growing with us through a recovery year of 2021 where we heard from many people with fascinating stories of challenges, struggles, dissappointments, and close calls that caused them to over time, gain strength and growth that made them just a little bit taller and stronger. These stories capture those that gained strength from their experiences and I am one that has benefited and have been extremely blessed by them. The conversations have been powerful and touching and every time I sit down with someone, it becomes like a purging, release, healing and vulnerable session. I am so grateful for the time others have taken to share these stories and I have heard feedback that people are hearing and relating to what they have heard and it is making an impact for good in others lives. This year, there will be some diversity in close calls to include not only those that have experienced a close call but, have been close to others that have nearly died or have died and moved on and what did that impact do to influence their attitude and outlook on what life they have ahead of them. I will be talking with Doctors / Nurses, First Responders, Rangers, Firefighters, Morticians, Athletes, etc. Again, thank you for listening in and sharing these stories. There are those out there that need to hear these stories and could use some inspiration and strength through others. Let's all grow and gain more love and closeness with each other in this new year. Until we hear from each other again, "Stay Alive to Tell About It!" --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bob-howard9/message
