A Utah jury has convicted Kouri Richins of first-degree murder in the fentanyl poisoning death of her husband Eric Richins. The verdict closed the criminal case. The legal and procedural questions it leaves behind are another matter entirely. This week on True Crime Today, we examine the Richins conviction through the lens of what the trial's final chapter revealed — and what it left unresolved. Carmen Lauber, who prosecutors say supplied the fentanyl used to kill Eric Richins, received an immunity deal in exchange for her cooperation. The terms, the scope, and the implications of that agreement are examined here in full. Defense attorneys raised misconduct arguments — alleged coercion, evidence handling concerns — and the jury convicted Kouri Richins regardless. What does that tell us about the weight of the evidence and the credibility determinations made in that courtroom? We also draw a procedural parallel to the Nancy Crampton-Brophy case — the Oregon woman convicted of murdering her husband Daniel after a 2011 essay she wrote, titled "How to Murder Your Husband," surfaced during the investigation. The essay was ruled too old for admission at trial. The conviction stood. Both cases raise substantive questions about what evidence gets in, what gets excluded, and how juries reach decisions in the absence of certain materials.Retired FBI Behavioral Analysis Chief Robin Dreeke provides analytical context on the post-verdict phase — the psychology of the convicted defendant, the legal residue of disputed pretrial conduct, and what the Richins case establishes as precedent for cases involving defendants who publicly perform grief following an alleged crime.Verdict rendered. Analysis continues.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The children's book. The morning show appearances. The carefully composed grief — all of it documented, all of it public, all of it now part of the permanent record of a woman a jury found guilty of murdering her husband with fentanyl. This week on Hidden Killers, we examine the architecture of Kouri Richins' self-constructed narrative — and how it collapsed under its own weight. This is Part 4 of The Perfect Wife, and it draws a direct evidentiary parallel to Nancy Crampton-Brophy, the Oregon romance novelist who published an essay in 2011 titled "How to Murder Your Husband." The document detailed specific methods. It included the line: "If the murder is supposed to set me free, I certainly don't want to spend any time in jail." Seven years later, her husband Daniel was shot twice in the chest. She drove her own minivan. She bought the gun through traceable channels. She published her methodology under her real name. The jury convicted her.The pattern is consistent: the narcissist cannot stay invisible. The need to be seen — as clever, as wronged, as grieving, as powerful — is the same impulse that leaves the evidence trail.Post-verdict, retired FBI Behavioral Analysis Chief Robin Dreeke walks through the specific behavioral indicators that defined the Richins case, the unanswered questions around Carmen Lauber's immunity deal, and what the psychological profile tells us about where Kouri Richins goes from here — mentally, emotionally, and legally. We also examine the defense's misconduct arguments and what it means that a jury convicted her despite them. The investigation is over. The analysis is not.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? This week in True Crime Today's Week in Review, the Kouri Richins conviction gets examined through the two behavioral and evidentiary threads that make it most legible — the pattern of public narrative construction in the aftermath of an alleged murder, and the documented history of victims who identified their killers before they died. After Eric Richins died, Kouri Richins wrote a children's book about a father who becomes a firefly and went on morning shows to perform grief on national television. Prosecutors say she killed him. Tony Brueski examines that conduct through the case that makes the underlying compulsion most explicit. Nancy Crampton-Brophy published an essay in 2011 titled "How to Murder Your Husband" — under her real name, discussing methods, discussing freedom from imprisonment. Seven years later she shot her husband Daniel twice in the chest. The essay was ruled too old for trial. The jury convicted her anyway, on evidence that included traceable gun purchases and her own vehicle placing her at the scene. The prosecutorial and behavioral significance of a defendant who cannot resist public self-expression — even when that expression documents motive — is the thread connecting both cases. The evidentiary parallel on the victim side is equally significant. Eric Richins told friends after Valentine's Day 2022 that he believed Kouri was poisoning him following a serious illness. Prosecutors allege she administered five times the lethal dose of fentanyl approximately one month later. Bobby Curley, hospitalized on September 22, 1991, took a nurse's arm and stated explicitly: "Please help me. My wife is trying to kill me. She is not as she seems." He died the following morning. Joann Curley had been administering thallium to his iced tea for eleven months — confirmed by post-mortem hair analysis at nine hundred times the lethal dose. She collected a $1.7 million settlement two days before his death. Both victims named what was happening to them. In neither case was it enough. The legal and behavioral record this week's coverage examines explains why.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? This week in Hidden Killers' Week in Review, two of the most revealing dimensions of the Kouri Richins case get the examination they deserve — the performance Kouri allegedly constructed in the aftermath of Eric's death, and the parallel cases that document what it looks like when a victim understands exactly what is happening and still cannot survive it.After Eric Richins died, Kouri wrote a children's book about a father who becomes a firefly. She appeared on morning shows. Prosecutors say she killed him. Tony Brueski examines the narcissist's compulsion to control the narrative through the case that documents it most starkly — Nancy Crampton-Brophy, who published "How to Murder Your Husband" in 2011, discussing methods and motives under her real name, then shot her husband Daniel twice in the chest seven years later. The essay was excluded from trial. The jury convicted her anyway. She bought the gun traceably. She drove her own minivan to the crime scene. The need to be seen as clever overrides the need to stay invisible. The second piece of this week's coverage examines the victims. Eric Richins told friends after Valentine's Day 2022 that he thought Kouri might be poisoning him. He had been violently ill. According to prosecutors, she made him a Moscow Mule with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl approximately a month later. He was dead by morning. Bobby Curley grabbed a nurse's arm in a hospital on September 22, 1991 and said: "Please help me. My wife is trying to kill me. She is not as she seems." His heart stopped the next morning. Joann Curley had been poisoning his iced tea with thallium for nearly a year. Hair analysis confirmed eleven months of exposure — nine hundred times the lethal dose. Two days before Bobby died, Joann collected a $1.7 million settlement. She needed him dead first. Both men named what was happening. Neither survived it. The pattern the Kouri Richins conviction documents has been documented before.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? This week in Hidden Killers' Week in Review, the behavioral analysis that matters most on the Kouri Richins case goes beyond the trial record and into the psychological architecture underneath it — the compulsion to perform grief publicly, and the documented history of victims who recognized what was being done to them and couldn't escape it anyway. After prosecutors say Kouri Richins killed her husband, she wrote a children's book. "Are You With Me?" A father who dies and becomes a firefly. She appeared on morning shows. She performed. Tony Brueski examines that behavior through the case that documents the narcissist's narrative compulsion at its most explicit — Nancy Crampton-Brophy, who published an essay in 2011 titled "How to Murder Your Husband," discussing methods and motivations under her real name, then shot her husband Daniel twice in the chest seven years later. The essay was excluded from her trial. The jury convicted her anyway. She bought the gun with traceable purchases. She drove herself to the crime scene. The need to be recognized as clever — to be seen — overrides the operational instinct to disappear. Kouri wrote herself as the bereaved mother. Nancy wrote herself as the expert. Both stepped into public light that ultimately exposed them. The victims' side of that dynamic is equally documented. Eric Richins told people after Valentine's Day 2022 that he believed Kouri was poisoning him. He had been violently ill. Prosecutors say she killed him with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl approximately a month later. Bobby Curley, in a hospital on September 22, 1991, physically grabbed a nurse and said clearly: "Please help me. My wife is trying to kill me. She is not as she seems." He died the next morning. Joann had been poisoning his iced tea with thallium for nearly a year — eleven months confirmed by hair analysis, nine hundred times the lethal dose — while collecting a $1.7 million settlement two days before he died. Both men named it. The behavioral framework that explains why naming it wasn't enough is the work this week's coverage does.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Eric Richins told people after Valentine's Day 2022 that he believed his wife was trying to poison him. He had been violently ill. He said it out loud to people he trusted. Prosecutors say Kouri made him a Moscow Mule with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl approximately a month later. He was dead by morning.Bobby Curley grabbed a nurse's arm in a hospital on September 22, 1991. Weak, barely able to hold himself upright, he said clearly: "Please help me. My wife is trying to kill me. She is not as she seems." His heart stopped the next morning. Joann had been adding thallium to his iced tea every day for nearly a year. Hair analysis later confirmed eleven months of poisoning — nine hundred times the lethal dose administered over time, methodically, while he lost his hair and his hands burned and doctors couldn't explain what was happening. Two days before Bobby died, Joann collected a $1.7 million settlement. She needed him dead first. This week in Hidden Killers' Week in Review, both men are at the center of the coverage Eric's community has been following — because both cases document the same unbearable truth: knowing what is happening to you is not the same as being able to stop it.Tony Brueski also examines what Kouri did after Eric died. The children's book. The morning show appearances. The grieving widow performance on national television. That conduct gets examined alongside Nancy Crampton-Brophy — who published "How to Murder Your Husband" in 2011 under her real name, discussing methods and motives, then shot her husband Daniel in the chest seven years later. The essay was kept out of her trial. The jury convicted her anyway. The narcissist cannot stay invisible. The need to be seen as clever, as the author of the story, overrides every instinct toward self-preservation.Kouri wrote herself as the grieving mother. Eric's family watched it happen. The jury gave them the verdict that answered it. Daniel Brophy was a beloved chef and culinary instructor at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland. At 63 years old, he was passionate about teaching and loved by his students. On June 2, 2018, Daniel was found shot to death inside his classroom—murdered in the place he loved most. The investigation led police to an unlikely suspect: his wife, Nancy Crampton Brophy, a romance novelist. Years before Daniel's murder, Nancy had written an essay titled "How to Murder Your Husband." In it, she detailed various methods of killing a spouse and getting away with it. Investigators discovered Nancy had purchased gun parts online, taken out life insurance policies on Daniel, and her car was captured on surveillance footage near the culinary school the morning of the murder. In May 2022, Nancy Crampton Brophy was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. This case is a chilling reminder that sometimes, truth is stranger—and darker—than fiction. Her husband, a chef and culinary instructor, was found shot to death in June 2018 at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland.Nancy was arrested in September 2018 and charged with his murder. Prosecutors argued that she killed her husband for financial gain, citing her significant debt and multiple life insurance policies taken out on him. In this movie summary Lifetime states, “Nancy seemed to have a knack for writing about murder. The Portland-based romance-thriller novelist authored books about relationships that were tumultuous, while using seductive men on the covers to lure in her readers. This case will probably go down as one of the most infamous murder cases in Oregon history. It almost seems too wild to be true. A writer authors a blog post titled, “How to Murder Your Husband” and then years later, her husband ends up murdered and she becomes the prime suspect. Maybe if Nancy Brophy had been a better writer, she would've written a better ending for herself. Or maybe she really was just “researching” for her next book? This is the case of Dan and Nancy Brophy. Daniel was killed by his wife, Nancy Crampton-Brophy, at the Oregon Culinary Institute where he worked as an instructor. Nancy – who published an online essay called “How to Murder Your Husband” – left a trail of digital evidence in her browser history that Sparling was able to use to help prove her guilt and secure her conviction for homicide in May of 2022. This case involved a lot of digital evidence, from CCTV video footage to online searches for ghost guns, so with that let's hear from Aaron about this complex case.

The Murder of Daniel Brophy:On Saturday June 2, 2018, students at the Oregon Culinary Institute (OCI) arrived at class that morning to find their instructor, sixty-three-year-old Daniel Brophy, dead from gunshot wounds to the back and chest. With more than fifty years' experience in the culinary field, Brophy was a popular chef and instructor and, while detectives couldn't rule out a disgruntled student, no one could imagine his killer was a member of the OCI community.Thank you to the incredible David White for research assistance!ReferencesCourt TV. 2022. In 2018, Daniel Brophy was a chef and instructor at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland. Early on a Saturday morning, students found his body on the floor of one of the school's kitchens. Daniel's wife, Nancy, became an early suspect, in part because she was an author and had a lengthy search history involving different ways to kill someone. Dan Brophy, 63, was a well-known chef and popular teacher at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland, Oregon. In the morning of June 2, 2018, Dan was gunned down while he was prepping for the day's work in the school's kitchen. He had no known enemies. However, Dan and his wife, Nancy, were having serious financial problems and to shore up the couple's finances, Nancy, a self-published romance novelist, had taken a job selling life insurance. Friends of the couple testified that their marriage was strong and stable; others noted that Nancy was tired of Dan's hoarding and messiness. During the trial, it was revealed that Dan was heavily insured, and Nancy had recently purchased a “ghost gun” kit online (for "research purposes," she said). In addition, Nancy's van was seen near the scene of the crime. And although the judge did not allow the issue to be raised at trial, she'd also published an essay on her blog entitled "How to Murder Your Husband". Nancy Crampton Brophy, 71, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. This episode includes testimony from friend and fellow chef Tania Medlin, Nancy's cellmate Anndrea Jacobs, and Nancy herself, whose rambling responses did her no favors.

63-year-old Chef Daniel Brophy was the Oregon Culinary Institute's most eccentric instructor for many years. His hands-on method of foraging wild herbs & incorporating them in his dishes was only one example of what made him so special, in and out of the kitchen. All seemed well in Daniel's personal life as well, having been married to his wife Nancy for over 20 years. In 2018, Daniel left his home early in the morning to teach his normal Saturday course. Little did he know, heading into work that day meant walking directly into a trap…when he was confronted with a 9mm Glock 17, held by the last person anyone would expect. This week, a 71-year-old woman found guilty of murdering her husband in 2018 after writing a blog post titled "How to Murder Your Husband." According to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, Nancy Crampton Brophy was convicted of second-degree murder with a firearm on Wednesday, May 25. The trial began in April as prosecutors argued she shot her husband twice on June 2, 2018, outside his workplace at the Oregon Culinary Institute. Her husband, Daniel Brophy, arrived at the scene before her according to surveillance footage. She is seen leaving the Oregon Culinary Institute shortly after he was shot. Police were called to the scene after Brophy's co-workers found his body. Using the same vehicle, Crampton Brophy returned to the scene. Her husband was killed at home, according to law enforcement officials. Crampton Brophy purchased a Glock 9 mm gun before her husband's shooting, and three days after he died, she tried to collect his life insurance policy. Brophy was shot in the heart, according to KOIN-TV. Gun parts from the shooting, however, were not found by investigators. In order to pay off some credit card debt and their mortgage, the couple recently took out $35,000 from his 401K. Crampton Brophy reportedly claimed she had a "memory hole" on the day of her husband's death during her trial. It may have been possible for her to drive to the Culinary Institute in her minivan in order to write, but she is unable to recall the exact details. A psychologist testified that she did not find Crampton Brophy to be a psychopath after conducting tests on her. According to KOIN, she testified, "I know I did not go into the building because I know I did not kill Dan." According to Brophy's son, the verdict gives the family a sense of closure about what happened because they can now move forward and always remember their father. As of June 9, Crampton Brophy is scheduled to be sentenced by the District Attorney's Office. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts!
