One of our favorite bands based in Melbourne, Hiatus Kaiyote returns with their first new music in two years. They recently treated fans to a livestream of their first live show of the year from The Evelyn, one of the first venues in their hometown that took a chance on a nascent group. “Everything's Beautiful” leans into life's possibilities through luscious guitar licks, heart-pounding bass lines, and of course, the dynamic vocals only Nai Palm can lay down.

Sunday 23 January: Kate Fagan listens closely to one of the best albums of 1971, and Nai Palm from Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote shares the band's creative process.
"Hiatus Kaiyote" are an Australian jazz/funk/neo soul band based out of Melbourne. The band is led by signer/guitarist Nai Palm (aka Naomi Saalfield). After going through the trauma of losing both her parents and being separated from her siblings in her early teenage years, Nai Palm decided to move to Melbourne by herself, without knowing anyone of having a place to live. It wasn't long before she stumbled by a local park, where she witnessed and eventually learnt the art of fire dancing. During this time she also continued to write and perform solo material at local music venues. It was at one of her solo performances that the other members of "Hiatus Kaiyote" first met her. After a year of hanging out, the quartet officially formed a band and self-produced their debut full length album "Tawk Tomahawk" in 2012.Their path since then has seen them tour the world, make new fans and connections within the industry, and put out further studio albums. In this episode Jay and Jesse discuss the bands history and spin some of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Hiatus Kaiyote - "Sip Into Something Soft" from the 2021 album Mood Valiant on Brainfeeder. Two-time Grammy nominated neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote have returned after a six-year... well... "hiatus." During that time, members of the Australian jazz/funk group explored solo and side projects. Then, in 2018, vocalist/guitarist Nai Palm (real name: Naomi Saalfield) was diagnosed with breast cancer, the same disease she confronted in her childhood when her mother was diagnosed and died from it. The band's new album, Mood Valiant, was named in tribute to her late mom. “I don't know how she afforded it, but she had two Valiant station wagons. And we were ratbags,” Saalfield toldNME. “A Valiant is like a Kingswood, a trashy Aussie car. I like the idea that it's not a Lamborghini like you usually see. It's a flex because it's really daggy. The badass side of me comes from my mum being incredibly stylish. I also really like the word valiant – it's so uplifting and righteous.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nai Palm is the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of Hiatus Kaiyote, the progressive neo-soul group from Melbourne, Australia who make music that is, in their own words, “multidimensional, polyrhythmic gangster shit.” As the first Australian band nominated for a Grammy Award in an R&B category, this self-termed “future soul band” gradually won support from a wide array of taste-making DJs and industry peers and the list of artists who have sampled their music will make you weep. On this episode Nai chats about her hard, formative childhood, the emotional rollercoaster of getting validation from iconic artists, and getting back into the studio to write that long-awaited third album. Nai Palm of Hiatus Kaiyote has recently been flying solo, with her debut album Needle Paw soon to be released. In spite of a turbulent childhood, she took solace in nature, in animals and in music, growing into the independent spirit and curious soul that has enchanted such artists as Erykah Badu, Animal Collective, Questlove and the late, great Prince.
The boys talk with Nai Palm, the lead vocalist of Hiatus Kaiyote. They make really smooth music. This is Hannibal writing in the 3rd person. I don't want to do it any more. We had a good time talking about music and people and life and juice. Check out Hiatus Kaiyote. Their last album is great to cuddle to. I'm not an excellent interviewer. Tony is very excited during this one and it shows. Thank you to our sponsors for tolerating the nonsense. This episode is brought to you by Helix Sleep (www.helixsleep.com/RAMBLER), Seeso (www.seeso.com promo code: RAMBLER), and SeatGeek (promo code: RAMBLER).
Hiatus Kaiyote: In a whirlwind five years with two Grammy nominations, multiple world tours, and nods from Erykah Badu, Questlove and Prince, Hiatus Kaiyote meld electric jazz virtuosity with the beat-making dexterity of Flying Lotus and Madlib, and transform it into what the band describes as 'multi-dimensional, polyrhythmic gangster sh*t'. Singer-guitarist Nai Palm leads the band with her soul-driven force and is backed up by Paul Bender on bass, Simon Mavin on keyboards and drummer Perrin Moss.
