January is School Board Appreciation Month! We'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our seven elected School Board members for their voluntary service to the District and to the greater Hillsboro community: Chair Ivette Pantoja, Vice Chair Mark Watson, and Directors See Eun Kim, Erika Lopez, Patrick Maguire, Nancy Thomas, and Monique Ward. We would also like to recognize and thank our three student representatives to the Board: Gwen Kondor from Century High School, Kal Sibbel from Liberty High School, and Abraham Staffa from Hillsboro Online Academy. Board members put in countless hours overseeing and providing community voice to District operations, as well as advocating for the resources and opportunities students need to be successful. For all you do, School Board members, we thank you! Our Featured Staff Member is Poynter Library/Media Assistant Kim Parrett. Walk into her library and you instantly feel a sense of welcome and calm. With soft music playing, spotless organization, inviting displays, and a multitude of soft seating options, you definitely feel like you've entered an oasis. That atmosphere is something Kim has worked hard to achieve. Not only that, but through a variety of purposeful actions - from grant writing to surveying students about the books they want to read - she has grown her library's collection with $15,500 worth of high interest, age-appropriate, and culturally and linguistically diverse books! Kim is quick to give credit to the Hillsboro Schools Foundation and local businesses for a majority of the infrastructure changes she's been able to make. Many of the books she's added are because of HSF grants and gifts, and much of the furniture was thanks to pass-through donations HSF received from organizations in the area. In addition, Kim received a $1000 HSF grant this year to enhance a makerspace that she converted from an old storage area off of the main library. Learn more about the amazing things Kim is doing over at Poynter and see pictures on our website. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. For all you do, School Board members, we thank you! Our featured event is a refresh of the map of the United States on Butternut Creek Elementary School's playground. The map is once again clear and vibrantly colorful, thanks to a generous donation of paint from Ace Hardware and time from the Butternut Creek Parent-Teacher Committee. The original map had significantly faded over time, making it challenging for students to explore and learn. So the PTC reached out to Ace and successfully secured the materials necessary to restore it to its former glory. Students and staff are thrilled with the results. Many thanks to Ace Hardware and the Butternut Creek PTC! There will be no school for all students on Monday, January 15th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. School resumes for all students on Tuesday, January 16th. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Nancy argues that higher education faculty, staff, and administrators can be political without being partisan when it comes to things like encouraging students to vote or thinking about how political issues will impact their day-to-day lives. She also offers some advice for how to keep voting in your messaging mix this fall despite everything else happening on campus and in the country.

Description: Sometimes the struggles while parenting is not rebellion in the child, nor is it poor parenting in the parent. Sometimes the problem lies in the attachment between parents and children. This is a brain problem – with answers. In this episode of Breaking Bread, Craig Stickling teaches us about Reactive Attachment Disorder. Critical content contained in this episode:  Attachment is a deep and lasting connection between a child and a caregiver established in the first 36 months of life. Attachment is a construct built over time. Attachment impacts a person’s self worth, emotional management and ability to build relationships. Characteristics of poor attachment in a child can manifest itself in the following ways: detached and unresponsive behavior difficulty being comforted defiant behavior poor boundaries with strangers difficulty trusting parents While cause and effect is difficult to tease out, Reactive Attachment Disorder rises from early trauma and stresses and should be understood as an infliction of the brain. While trauma and stresses may be present in the early years of a child it puts them at higher risk of Reactive Attachment Disorder but doesn’t mean that they necessarily will suffer with attachment issues. The road to recovery includes reorienting a child’s brain toward their parents. Establishing “mom and dad know best" and can assure safety along with unconditional love is foundational.  Resource: "When love is not enough” by Nancy Thomas

Welcome to episode 18 in Season 2 of Real Democracy Now! a podcast. And it is also the last episode in Season 2 about representative democracy. My interview with Nancy will be published in a later season of the podcast.    Helene Landemore is Associate Professor of Political Science at Yale University. Her research interests encompass democratic theory, theories of justice, Enlightenment thinkers, and the philosophy of social sciences.   Jean-Paul Gagnon from the University of Canberra. Peck Chair in International Communication at Stanford University where he is Professor of Communication, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Deliberative Democracy. I spoke with Professor Fishkin about deliberative polling in episode 16 in Season 1.   Andy Holdup who was a member of the Citizens’ Assembly South in Southhampton in the UK in 2015 and also a guest on episode 17 in Season 1.   And finally, we hear from Benjamin Isakhan who is Associate Professor of Politics and Policy Studies and Founding Director of POLIS, a research network for Politics and International Relations in the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalization at Deakin University, Australia. I spoke with Ben in episode 4 of Season 2 about non-Western democracy.    Thank you for joining me for Season 2 of Real Democracy Now! a podcast, looking at how representative democracy developed and how it operates. I’ll be back with Season 3 on Elections, voting and alternatives in September 2017. If you haven’t yet subscribed to the podcast, I’d suggest you do that now so that when Season 3 starts you’ll automatically have those episodes downloaded onto your podcast app.
