Fire ant bites are still bad! Skin red and raised, blisters. Washed the bitten areas as soon as I could, used Witch Hazel, Benadryl gel, and Neosporin. The relief offered was/is minor. Got bit while doing a good deed, mowing my neighbor's yard while he is away. Of Course You Realize THIS Means Podcast - A Looney Tunes Discussion
SDCC 2024 seems to have at least one panel a year dedicated to Looney Tunes and I'm here for it, but not there. I couldn't make it out to the Fan Capital of California, but my dear friend The Tooney Tenor was able to cover for me! MeTV Toons brought out the Looney Legends from voice cast to animation historian, Jerry Beck who is also a producer on the channel! This panel was all about Saturday Morning Cartoons, favorite cereals, animation and the best Bugs Bunny voices you've ever heard. The Panel Included: Bob Bergen: The official voice of MeTV Toons. You'll recognize his voice as Porky Pig, Tweety, Marvin the Martian, Speedy Gonzales, and Sylvester Jr. He's also lent his talent to projects like Spirited Away (No-Face). Not to mention various Star Wars video games (Luke Skywalker). Jerry Beck: Renowned animation historian, author of numerous books on the subject, and co-founder of the influential Cartoon Research website. Eric Bauza: Two-time Emmy-winning voice actor celebrated for his role as Bugs Bunny. Additionally, he has voiced Daffy Duck, Tweety, Marvin the Martian, Stimpy, and many more. Jeff Bergman: Celebrated voice actor who has brought life to classic cartoon characters like Fred Flintstone. Known for being Barney Rubble, Yogi Bear, and an extensive list of Looney Tunes favorites including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Elmer Fudd. Candi Milo: A versatile voice actress known for her work as Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory, Dr. Nora Wakeman from My Life as a Teenage Robot, Snap from ChalkZone, and Granny and Witch Hazel from Looney Tunes. Neal Sabin: Vice Chairman of Weigel Broadcasting, the parent company of MeTV Toons. MeTV Toons Network is celebrating Bugs Bunny's 84th Birthday with a Brand New Original Special and Full Day Marathon of his best animated shorts! Check out the Documentary Hare's To Bugs! A Bugs Bunny Celebration out now! Follow The Tooney Tenor across Social Media @Thetooneytenor Thanks for Listening!

We have a number of pop culture interests outside our beloved genre. Our fandom in the wonderful world of comic books outdates our residency in Metaldom. Indie comic companies have been clamoring to present stories about and inspired by current Metal artists. There have been some cool crossover stories as well. Think Elvira meets Vincent Price. So we took our love of "funny books" and thought up some cool crossovers featuring our fave Metal artists. How about Misfits/Scooby Doo, Gwar/XMen and Henry Rollins vs. Wolverine. The ideas are endless. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we lost another Punk legend and regret WrestleMania. Musically, we crank some Tyr, Thor, Trespass, Drop Dead, Witch Hazel, Victor Crowley and Personality Crisis. Horns Up!!

Thursday, March 14th, is Pi Day! Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. That ratio's first three digits are 3.14, hence the celebration of Pi Day on March 14th. From the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to modern‐day mathematicians, no other number has captured humankind's fascination and attention quite like π - it continues infinitely without repeating digits and has been calculated, using supercomputers, to more than 1 trillion digits past the decimal. Because it represents so much mathematical fun, and because it is also the birthday of Albert Einstein - one of history's most revolutionary physicists - Pi Day has become an international holiday, with special events held around the world. For more information or to find fun Pi‐related activities, visit piday.org. Our featured event is field trip support from the Royal Rosarians! The Rosarians will donate a total of $7,751 to Brookwood, Free Orchards, Lincoln Street, McKinney, Minter Bridge, Mooberry, Reedville, West Union, Witch Hazel, and W.L. Henry Elementary Schools this year. Rosarian and former HSD teacher, Holly Fowler, presented the first check for $1329 to Witch Hazel Elementary School on Friday, March 1st. Generous support from individuals, businesses, and community organizations like this one allow our schools to provide students with experiences and opportunities that otherwise would not be possible. Edith Wharton published The Age of Innocence at a very important moment in her life. When the novel came out in 1920, she had been living in France full-time for nearly 10 years and had seen the devastating effects of World War I up close. Her response was to look back with a sense of nostalgia to the time of her childhood to recreate that staid, restrictive world of New York in the 1870s that, despite its often social cruelty and harsh judgements, seemed to have some kind of moral center. It was a world in which Wharton as a creative woman, however, could not live and work, and thus, she transferred her life in stages to France. In this episode, Dr. Emily Orlando, a noted Wharton scholar, joins Carl to delve into the background of this novel, take a deep dive into the personalities of the major characters, and discuss what Wharton wanted to say in her masterpiece. Our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan is the fifth HSD has operated under since unification in the late 1990s. These strategic plans articulate our mission, goals, and focus areas as we strive to increase the achievement of all students. A clear and focused plan is critical to communicating our priorities to all stakeholders, serves as a roadmap to success, and helps align efforts toward a common, student-centered outcome. While we are actively working on and tracking fifteen metrics to assess our progress, there are five performance targets we will routinely highlight: % of students proficient in reading in 3rd grade % of students attending more than 90% of their enrolled school days % of students participating in at least one school-based extracurricular activity % of students on-track to graduate by the end of their 9th grade year % of students graduating within four years of entering high school, and % of students completing within five years of entering high school You are now able to see an infographic with our current status in each of these areas on our new Strategic Plan Dashboard. As we are able to update the dashboard with new data, we will start indicating changes over time. Next summer, once we have a full year of data, we will compile a report with information on our progress toward all fifteen metrics. Part of our outreach, feedback, and accountability process is to offer parents and community members the opportunity to complete a survey each fall in which they can share their perspectives on the quality of the education program offered in HSD. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts by Thursday, November 30th, 2023. The results of the survey will be analyzed along with those from our student survey next spring to see where adjustments to our plan need to be made heading into the 2024-25 school year. Thank you! Our featured event is a series of Dia de los Muertos-themed assemblies that were held at seven of our elementary schools on Wednesday and Thursday, October 25th and 26th. San Diego-based band Jarabe Mexicano, composed of members who are all trained music educators, regularly embarks on educational outreach tours and in HSD visited Eastwood, Mooberry, Lincoln Street, Minter Bridge, Reedville, Witch Hazel, and W.L. Henry Elementary Schools. Hilhi's own Mariachi Sangre Azul opened for the band at their Minter Bridge performance on Wednesday afternoon, and did the same for the group's performance at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton on Friday evening. Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 5th at 2 a.m. Remember to turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. In this episode, Ari talks to Bryan Jackowitz, President of Dickinson Brands. Bryan has an incredible passion for his business. Between the Witch Hazel product itself, the history of the industry, the sustainable nature of their production, and the growth of the company along the way, what's not to be excited about? Bryan enjoys talking to Ari about the cool history of the product, but then dives into upgrades in processes, automation, and marketing that are allowing American Distilling and Dickinson Brands to launch into the future. Organic, natural, local, and native isn't a marketing gimmick, it's truly the way they've been creating their products since the beginning. For this very special episode five people have gathered to discuss an influential part of their childhood – H. R. Pufnstuf! In particular we examine the movie that grew out of the children television show's immense popularity – PUFNSTUF (1970). So, grab your magic flute and come to Living Island for an adventure you'll never forget – no matter how hard you try. Wild, man! I am joined by Beth, Troy Guinn, John Hudson and Steph to talk about the biggest hit of Sid & Marty Krofft's many Saturday morning TV programs. Each of us relate our history with the various shows and what we thought of them as kids before diving into the specifics of the big screen version. We dig into the Krofft brothers' background as puppet performers, their early successes on the stage and the genesis of Pufnstuf as a character. We take note of a fun Universal Horror related song from their early 1960's adult puppet show and then turn things toward the amazing songs created for the film. We talk about the cast with Jack Wild's place in the hearts of young girls becoming a subject of some amusement while Billie Hayes' immortal Witchiepoo is lauded as the best reason to watch either the film or the television show. Favorite lines of dialog are quoted and we wonder aloud if some of the best bits were adlibbed by Miss Hayes or not. We also talk about Mama Cass Elliot's excellent performance as Witch Hazel and single out her song as a highlight. This really is a delightful movie! If you want to share your own memories of the old Sid & Marty Krofft shows thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We hope you enjoy this slightly chaotic trip into Saturday mornings past. Thank you for listening!

Of Course You Realize THIS Means Podcast - A Looney Tunes Discussion
Hey Folks! We were treated to a surprise yesterday as Cartoonito dropped a brand new Halloween short just before the end of spooky season and it's filled with Easter Eggs to the larger Looniverse! The bite-sized short is only 3 minutes long and unlike the usual fair from this series, non of the character create any conflict that prevents them getting the job done so this is just for fun! It starts with a Transylvania 6-5000 reference with the backdrop design appearing visually similar to that of Count Bloodcount! Then we get those magic words by Lola, "AbraCadabra" and BAM, a bat with a top hat drops down! This is a direct visual homage to what Count Bloodcount looks like in Bat form. When Tweety flies in dressed as a ghost, he spooks Sylvester and I took this to be a reference to Boo Appetweet! The Looney Tunes Cartoons short released in the first batch of shorts way back in 2020. Then the jobs are dished out and the rest of the costumes are revealed. Porky is dressed as a pumpkin; this is for a gag later on that made me laugh out loud. Wile E. is dressed as the scarecrow, "If I only had a brain." Lola is a magician, making the Halloween magic happen. Bugs Bunny is dressed as Witch Hazel and later in the episode appears with the mask he wore in Broomstick Bunny; the "Ugliest" Witch of all! Petunia is dressed as a Astronaut and that's just silly. AND DAFFY IS BATMAN! During his candy check, he has the line, "Taste Tested and Bat-Duck Approved!" The utterance of BatDuck is a verbal reference to when Plucky Duck dressed as Batman in Tiny Toon Adventures! What a callback! The citizens of Looniburg show up as their costumes are equally as adorable. Pussyfoot is dressed as dracula, Hippity is dressed as a pirate AND EGGHEAD IS DRESSED AS A GREMLIN FROM FALLING HARE!!! SO COOL! Unlike the other entries, the Looney Builders have no problem getting these trick or treaters their tasty candy making it just a sugar filled outing and a ultra cute one at that. Bugs wearing this mask from Broomstick Bunny is just an excellent homage and truly inspired me to make this blog for those that might miss it this holiday season! You can watch this one right now on Youtube at the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuhjE982oLE Be sure to watch the shorts mentioned as well or introduce them to the kids for additional cartoon treats this Halloween! Comment with your favorite homage in this and what's your favorite Looney Tunes Halloween short?!

Unless otherwise noted, all Web addresses mentioned were functional as of 10-21-22. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of October 24 and October 31. This revised episode from Halloween 2014 is part of a series this year of episodes related to trees and shrubs. SOUNDS – ~9 sec What better than an Eastern Screech-Owl calling eerily from a dark woods to conjure up a Halloween landscape? But for this Halloween season episode, consider a much quieter, but still mysterious, part of that landscape: the American Witch Hazel plant. This shrub or small tree—a native in Virginia and throughout the eastern United States—has two noteworthy water connections. First is the use of its forked twigs in “dowsing,” “divining,” or “water witching” to try to find groundwater, a centuries-old practice that some people still follow. In fact, the “witch” in the plant's common name may derive from an old English word that means “bend,” apparently referring to the plant's flexible twigs and, perhaps, to the belief that a dowsing rod will bend toward groundwater. Second, extracts from the plant's bark and leaves have long been used—medicinally and cosmetically—as an astringent, that is, a substance used to dry fluids and shrink tissues. Besides its reputed water-finding ability and its established fluid-drying uses, American Witch Hazel is also remarkable for its unusual blooming time. Bright yellow flowers appear in fall and can continue into December, often seen beside fruits from the previous season. When those fruits ripen, seeds are forcibly ejected some distance, leading to yet another possible origin of the plant's name: that people attributed to witchcraft the mysterious sound of those far-flung seeds hitting the ground. From its name, to its uses, to its unusual flowering and fruiting, Witch Hazel offers botanical treats far beyond Halloween season's creepy screeches. SOUND – 3 sec – Screech-Owl We close a musical observation about how seeing a cold-weather flowering tree can inspire human resilience. Here's about 50 seconds of a song called “Witch Hazel,” by Tom Gala, from his 2011 album, “Story After Story.” MUSIC - ~53 sec – Lyrics: “I am looking at Witch Hazel blooming in a garden—the bright yellow flowers in the middle of wintertime. And I tell my heart be strong like the Witch Hazel flower, and you will not be injured by this dark and trouble time.” SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment. EXTRA INFORMATION ABOUT WATER DOWSING The following information is quoted from the U.S. Geological Survey, “Water Science School/What is Water Dowsing?”; online at https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/water-dowsing. “'Water dowsing' refers in general to the practice of using a forked stick, rod, pendulum, or similar device to locate underground water, minerals, or other hidden or lost substances, and has been a subject of discussion and controversy for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. “Although tools and methods vary widely, most dowsers (also called diviners or water witches) probably still use the traditional forked stick, which may come from a variety of trees, including the willow, peach, and witchhazel. Other dowsers may use keys, wire coat hangers, pliers, wire rods, pendulums, or various kinds of elaborate boxes and electrical instruments. “In the classic method of using a forked stick, one fork is held in each hand with the palms upward. The bottom or butt end of the ‘Y' is pointed skyward at an angle of about 45 degrees. The dowser then walks back and forth over the area to be tested. When she/he passes over a source of water, the butt end of the stick is supposed to rotate or be attracted downward. “Water dowsers practice mainly in rural or suburban communities where residents are uncertain as to how to locate the best and cheapest supply of groundwater. “Because the drilling and development of a well often costs more than a thousand dollars, homeowners are understandably reluctant to gamble on a dry hole and turn to the water dowser for advice.” What does science say about dowsing? “Case histories and demonstrations of dowsers may seem convincing, but when dowsing is exposed to scientific examination, it presents a very different picture. The natural explanation of ‘successful' water dowsing is that in many areas underground water is so prevalent close to the land surface that it would be hard to drill a well and not find water. In a region of adequate rainfall and favorable geology, it is difficult not to drill and find water! “Some water exists under the Earth's surface almost everywhere. This explains why many dowsers appear to be successful. To locate groundwater accurately, however, as to depth, quantity, and quality, several techniques must be used. Hydrologic, geologic, and geophysical knowledge is needed to determine the depths and extent of the different water-bearing strata and the quantity and quality of water found in each. The area must be thoroughly tested and studied to determine these facts.”SOURCES Used for Audio John-Manuel Adriote, “The Mysterious Past and Present of Witch Hazel,” by The Atlantic, November 6, 2012, online at http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/11/the-mysterious-past-and-present-of-witch-hazel/264553/.American Water Surveyors, “Water Witching: A Brief History,” by Gerald Burden, December 26, 2015, online at https://wefindwater.com/water-witching-a-brief-history/. Porky and Sylvester! I'm ecstatic to say that the Porky/Sylvester pairing still works beautifully and one of the things I wanted to point out to fans is that when Sylvester is Porky's pet cat, he doesn't speak. This adds to the tension of the horror surrounding their adventures. We recommend this special to old and new fans of Looney Tunes alike, but while we're glad we are being challenged with this comedic content, it won't be for everyone. Molly Idle is on the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate her beautiful #PictureBook Witch Hazel. Molly tells us that in Witch Hazel something magical happens when Hazel and Hilda are together. As the seasons pass, Hazel's broom whisks the dust off many years of joyful memories, and young Hilda watches them come to life. But is it magic making memories...or are memories making magic? Molly also tells us the book gently explores the passage of time and the transcendent power of sharing our stories. Of Course You Realize THIS Means Podcast - A Looney Tunes Discussion
You made it! Here is the third part of my SDCC Looney Tunes Coverage! In the Indigo Ballroom, Warner Brothers Animation gracefully conducted a coup de grâce of epic proportions to their competition with 5 New Projects surrounding their Looney Tunes and Tiny Toons IP that are in production simultaneously! And that's not to mention, Coyote Vs. Acme which is another feature film we're getting next year! Eric Bauza moderated the panel and brought out Alex Kirwan, Abe Audish, Nick Cash, Erin Gibson, and Ashleigh Crystal Hairston to the stage to discuss Looney Tunes Cartoons, Tiny Toons Looniversity, and Bugs Bunny Builders! The presentation started with a Birthday Celebration surrounding Tweety's 80th! Then we were given the release date of Nov. 19th and 20th for King Tweety to be broadcast on Cartoon Network and HBO Max the following day! BUGS BUNNY BUILDERS: was next where we were treated to a full episode of the new show aimed at pre-school, but there is a lot to love in this family friendly series. "The world may change but the tunes adapt to fit in it without losing their main character traits." The big take away from this was the character interactions. Here, we'll see Foghorn Leghorn talk it up with Bugs Bunny and there will be so many cameos! LOONEY TUNES CARTOONS: Speaking of deep cut characters; we were given concept are and model sheets for older characters joining these new cartoons! These include Pussyfoot and Marc Anthony, Witch Hazel, Ralph Phillips, The Three Bears, and Sniffles! They brought with them a sneak peek of Hex Appeal, the Witch Hazel short and it is breathtaking! Check it out here: Hex Appeal! Then we were treated to a Comic Con Exclusive, with Ralph Phillips donning the cape and cowl and re-enacting the classic Batman: The Animated Series opening within a day dream! The crowd went nuts for that! A New Batch is on the way and we'll also see the full Witch Hazel short alongside a Halloween Special this FALL! TINY TOONS LOONIVERSITY! Tiny Toons Looniversity showed up with concept art, new details and a casting announcement! Ashleigh Crystal Hairston (Craig of the Creek) will be Babs Bunny in this series which will contain 30 minute episodes! We were also told the leads for the show would be Buster, Babs, Sweetie, Plucky and Hampton. With the faculty being made up of all the classic Tunes you know and love supporting their growth through the Performing Arts School! THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP! TITLE REVEALED! Daffy Duck and Porky Pig star in this Sci-Fi Animated Epic that will have the two idiots trying to save the world in the style of Looney Tunes Cartoons! This will be the first film from that team of Warner Bros Animators and it's written by Kevin Costello (Brigsy Bear.) BYE BYE BUNNY - FEATURE Before we were let out, we were provided an exclusive look from the new Musical Feature written by Ariel Dumas with songs by Tom Kitt who appeared at a piano and ready to sing us a song from the film. The song brought everyone's emotions out as it was set to a visual montage of Bugs Bunny from the Happy Rabbit to What's Opera Doc! and the lyrics were so nuanced I couldn't help but feel the weight of it. THAT'S NOT ALL FOLKS! The Panel may have ended, but it has never been a better time to be a Looney Tunes fan! Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat! Trick or Treat for Halloween! Listeners, if we have to have the song stuck in our head, so do you! Join us as we talk about this Barks oddity: a story with a provided concept, one based on a contemporaneous animated cartoon short (and subject to some editorial snipping). This story is a departure, but has the very memorable Witch Hazel as well as her broom, the delightful Beelzebub, and her wonderful pet ogre, say it with me: Smorgasbard, also known as Smorgie the Bad (!). So when ghosts and goblins by the score, ring the bell on your front door, better not be stingy or your nightmares will come true!
Take a look through your medicine cabinet — from skin cream to body wash and deodorant. Many of these products share an ingredient: witch hazel. And the witch hazel industry has deep roots in the Connecticut River Valley.
On the latest episode of the FemCity Podcast, Violette de Ayala is joined by Amy Welsman, to talk about launching a business, challenges and inspiration! About Our Guest // When the idea for PAUME came to founder Amy Welsman in early 2019, she was a new parent concerned about the health and wellbeing of her daughter. Already a seasoned entrepreneur by this point, Amy helped build the wildly successful Canadian women's intimate apparel brand Knix as its first employee. Amy's innate talent for pinpointing—and bringing to life—the next big idea led her to the concept of a nourishing, indulgent, sustainable hand care brand. PAUME launched in late 2020 with one product, the PAUME Antibacterial Hand Gel. The award winning formula, which features 69% ethyl alcohol, moisturizing plant-based emollients including Safflower Oil, Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel, and the PAUME Signature Blend of five essential oils with notes of woody cedar, crisp citrus, and herbaceous lavender and rosemary, is the antidote to the harsh, astringent, utilitarian hand sanitizers that have become ubiquitous. In the midst of relying on these products to keep her daughter safe, Amy felt that there had to be a better way. Amy began creating PAUME a few months before the pandemic hit, but the need for a product that protects people and their loved ones from germs and bacteria has become more relevant now than ever. Amy's vision is to create products that are both elegant and effective, and helps us to feel safe and to stay in touch with the people in our lives. XIV. As writer Edith Wharton began to spend more and more time in Paris during the early years of the 1900s, she made the acquaintance of the American journalist Morton Fullerton. Their meeting grew into a passionate and complicated love affair combining joy and emotional pain. Still, the affair led Wharton to some of her greatest creative moments and it wasn't until the 1980's when a long thought lost trove of letters brought the full story of the affair to light. This week's episode brings you to the Paris of the Belle Epoque and into the story of this surprising romance. For more stories of Edith Wharton from Carl Raymond, the Gilded Gentleman, tune into his appearance on the Bowery Boys episode Edith Wharton's New York.
