A hop, skip and jump away from Sydney, the Hunter Valley is renowned as the birthplace of Australian wine. And yet this is far from ideal wine territory: hot, sticky, often stormy. So how did this tiny wine region come to play such an outsize role in Ozzie wine's history and evolution?Join us to find out why as we chew the cud with Hunter legend Bruce Tyrrell (sample quote: ‘I'm the luckiest man in the wine industry') and winemaker Xanthe Hatcher (‘The Hunter's a region of extremes…') We touch on everything from French pick-pockets to oysters and, 'oblivion for a dollar fifty'. We explore how Hunter Semillon became an idiosyncratic global classic whose naturally low alcohol, refreshing, distinctive and food-friendly style paradoxically mean it's well suited to the wine drinkers of today. (But it wasn't always going to be this way – at one stage the wines had enough acidity, ‘to take the enamel off your teeth!') And we also look beyond Semillon to other Hunter staples like Chardonnay and Shiraz as well as future bets like Fiano. Thanks to the Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association and Wine Australia for sponsoring this episode. In 2019, the Sports Events and Tourism Association, or Sports ETA, embarked on an ambitious State of the Industry report to attempt to put a value on the economic impact derived from sports events and sports-related travel. The timing was fortuitous as it set a baseline for future studies just before the pandemic. In 2022, a second report analyzed the pace of recovery from that pandemic, looking at data from 2020 and 2021. But the latest report arguably paints the fullest pictureyet not just at how the industry has recovered, but how it continues to thrive. The headline numbers are that sports-related travel had a $52.2 billion direct economic impact in 2023. More than 200 million travelers were reported, generating more than 73 million room nights. But perhaps most impressive of all, some 63 percent of destinations surveyed said that sports are their largest generator of room nights. Think about that statistic for a moment and you can start to grasp the true power and potential of this market. John David took over as Sports ETA's president and CEO last year after decades as an event organizer and executive himself at USA BMX. So his perspective, and his support of continuing this vital research, are the perfect match to wade into the details of the full report. And Greg Pepitone from Tourism Economics, as the lead researcher in the project, also brings his perspective on where sports fit into the mix since his organization is one of the leading data providers for the overall travel industry. In this discussion, we talk with John and Greg about the not only the headline numbers in the report, but deeper insights that were analyzed about how event organizers make their decisions on locations, what kinds of services travelers are spending their money on, which areas of the country are sourcing the most events and much, much more.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's doubts a potential raising of the international visitor levy will impact tourism numbers.  Overseas visitors pay $35 collected through visa applications, which is evenly split between conservation and tourism.  Speaking at the TRENZ conference, Tourism Minister Matt Doocey says that advice he's received shows it would have to rise to about $42 in today's market.  Backpacker Youth Adventure Tourism Association chair Haydn Marriner told Mike Hosking that's just the cost of business.  He says to expect the same value from that $35 today is to ignore everything we've always had.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wilderness Tourism Association's new Executive Director: Towards a really bright future

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Janeen Sutherland has been the Wilderness Tourism Association's (WTA) Executive Director for close to three months. She became the WTA's Executive Director at the end of May and is about to embark upon a new strategic plan for them that will focus on areas of advocacy, marketing support and really building community. Sutherland did not know how many tourism businesses there are in the Discovery Islands, but last year Breanne Quesnel (President of the WTA and co-owner of Quadra Island based Spirit of the West Adventures) said there are more than 60 whose combined revenues are between $40 and $50 million a year. They are on Quadra, Cortes and the Outer Discovery Islands, but are not all members of the WTA “We have about 55 members total as part of our organization and most of them are actually coastal and Vancouver Island, A lot of them are. We're picking up more interior members and that's actually one of our goals of our strategic plan. We love to have more partners up north and more partners in the interior and also two more indigenous partners as well,” explained Sutherland. “Our vision is to create a sustainable future for BC's wilderness tourism industry.” How is that going? “We're obviously coming out of COVID and recovering from that. I would say most of our members are really quite thrilled with this summer and how bookings have been and how business has picked back up. Things are going quite well in that regard.” She added, “We really feel that tourism is the way of the future.” Sutherland quoted some stats: “Tourism brings in $20.3 billion per year and 130,000 jobs. That is more GDP than any other industry in British Columbia.” “There's 149,900 tourism jobs and there are 1,291 BC fish factory jobs.” “There are 19,748 BC owned tourism businesses and only half of one BC based fish factory is owned by British Columbia.” “All the rest are foreign owned, and so why are we allowing that in our waters?” Sutherland said the two issues that kept her membership up at night are protecting wild salmon and new regulations for the forestry industry “Those are definitely two hot topics, At the WTA we recognize that both of those industries are very important employment for many folks, so it is a sensitive topic.” “We are all about protecting the wild salmon and the Discovery Islands is the most important migratory route in the world for wild salmon. We know salmon are a keystone species. Without salmon, we won't have forests. They are just such a key part of all ecosystems. We really feel strongly that things are moving right now, the announcement that was made by the honorable Joyce Murray in the spring, are very positive steps in the right direction. We support responsible land-based aquaculture and we really hope that our government can make a shift in that direction.” They would also like to see some of the forestry regulations changed, so that the industry did not have such a negative impact on tourism. “Some of the wordings to some of the regulations really are not effective in protecting fragile ecosystems. Why do we need to log some of these pristine areas where some of our operators are going to pull up their kayaks? Why do they need to log that little patch right there by the water?” Sutherland said the WTA will continue to advocate for change. “We're really tuned into protecting these wild places and keeping them wild,” she explained. “We have a pretty bright future ahead of us. Canada now, in the international marketplace: I'd say we are the hottest wilderness destination out there. So I think we've got some really important work to do in the years to come.”

The fifth episode of the GNTB's industry podcast focuses on German natural landscapes from a business perspective: How are German natural landscapes received by travelers from abroad and what needs to be worked on? A particularly important group when it comes to nature travel is Dutch people, who especially appreciate vacations in nature. This is by no means just about hiking; climbing and canoeing are also popular. What is common to all interests is that a very good digital offering is extremely important to Dutch people, both for travel inspiration and for the actual trip. There is still some catching up to do here in some regions. Petra Hedorfer also discusses with her guests Marjon Kaper, Director of ANWB Travel at the Dutch ADAC, the ANWB, and Dr. Michael Braun, Board Member at the Tourism Association of Eastern Bavaria and Chairman of the Federal Association of German Low Mountains, how Germany is positioned in terms of visitor guidance, sustainability and electromobility, and what projects can still be expected here.

Everyone in Nashville knows Dee; she's been awarded the Woman of Influence by the Nashville Business Journal and the Outstanding Woman Hotelier of the Year. She's also a stakeholder within her community and serves on several boards: The Tennessee Hospitality & Tourism Association, Historic Hotels of America, the Nashville Downtown Partnership, the Nashville Chapter of the Les Dames d'Escoffier International, which mentors and supports women in hospitality just to name a few and she is most proud of the hotel's 10-year partnership with The Land Trust for Tennessee.Dee recently took on an important role in organizing the Centennial Celebration of Women's Suffrage in Nashville where it all happened 100 years ago. I bet you didn't know Tennessee was the swing vote back then. Dee will give us a little history lesson, we'll hear about the hotel, what they have been doing during this pandemic, of course, the women's suffrage celebration and we'll find out what it was like moving from England to Mississippi as a young girl, and how an independent Indian woman from the UK, figured out how to land a seat at the table. We'll even get a little celebrity juice, some girls chat, and a very moving narrative of what she is teaching her children. She does it all, while at the helm of such a majestic property, and as far as I'm concerned – she is the queen.   A lady of distinction, let's roll out the red carpet for Dee Patel….
