Episode Overview: “Sometimes it's really hard to convince yourself that you can do something until you've done it. It's okay to be afraid. It's okay to think that you're not strong enough as long as you try.”  Success doesn't always have to mean reaching those big audacious goals. It can be as simple as wanting to be better than who you were or where you were yesterday. It's alright to feel scared or second guess yourself; so long as you don't give up, you will always have the power and choice to succeed. Joining me for this episode is stuntwoman and top Ninja Warrior competitor, Jessie Graff.  A champion is never without setbacks, both physical and emotional, but with Jessie's drive to learn and grow, she continues to overcome them while shattering everyone else's expectations, including her own. Jessie's story is an inspiring one and I am excited to be able to share it with all of you so don't forget to tune in!   Episode Highlights: Jessie's early journey pursuing gymnastics to becoming a stunt double How she bounces back from pain and injury both physically and emotionally Seeing the upside of setbacks   The people she looks up to as her heroes Success shouldn't be strictly defined by solely reaching a goal How she defied her own expectations as a Ninja Warrior Her advice for those who admire her   About the Guest: Jessie Graff, one of the top competitors on NBC's "American Ninja Warrior," is a modern-day Wonder Woman, breaking stereotypes and breaking records. Graff became the first woman to complete stage 1 of the “American Ninja Warrior” Las Vegas national finals in 2016, becoming a national sensation and breaking news phenomenon. In the original version of Ninja Warrior, “Sasuke”, she is the second woman to accomplish the same feat in season 34 of Sasuke, and she is still the only woman to complete stage 2 in any version of Ninja Warrior and Sasuke. Graff attributes much of her success on American Ninja Warrior's seemingly impossible obstacles to her decade-long stunt career. Her credits include Wonder Woman, Bright, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Die Hard, The Dark Knight, and being a recurring double on Supergirl, Futureman, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Leverage, and many more. She was awarded the Action Icon Award for "Stuntwoman of the Year." Graff's journey began at the age of three when she went to the Big Apple Circus and begged the ringmaster to let her try. The experience ignited a desire to fly high and push herself beyond others' expectations. Her parents signed her up for circus gymnastics classes which led to training in various acrobatic and fitness disciplines, developing her strength, agility, and adaptability. Through her many social campaigns, Kathrine has truly made our society a much more accepting one, empowering women to come together and accomplish so much more than what was previously allowed. The photo of this incident spread throughout the globe and became one of Time-Life's “100 Photos that Changed the World.” The race served as a huge turning point for her and began her multifaceted career intending to empower and create more opportunities for women.  Thanks to her campaigning, women were officially allowed to register in the Boston Marathon in 1972.  Some of Kathrine's multiple accomplishments include founding the Avon's Running Global Women's Circuit and 261 Fearless, author of books such as Running and Walking for Women Over 40 and Marathon Woman, being inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in October 2011 for positive global social change, being an Emmy Award-winning television commentator who has done broadcast work for ABC, CBS, NBC, and ESPN.  Kathrine has run 39 marathons and was the winner of the 1974 New York City Marathon. In this podcast, we talk about her transition to building and growing Play Like a Girl full time, and the outdated terms we use that could very much be holding girls and young women back, by insinuating that femininity is negative -- I know I called myself a tomboy back then, but only now did I really understand it's potentially bad effects.       Episode Overview:   Welcome to Season 3 of the 6% with NancyMD! To kick off this season, I wanted to start with a very special episode featuring two of my colleagues-- Dr. Jennifer Weiss and Dr. Alana Munger! I'm so excited to have them here-- with this being Dr. Jennifer's encore appearance!   At the time of this recording, it would have been one year since my first episode-- and I really wanted to honor where I started by coming back and honouring women in orthopaedics, sharing their stories and all the hoops they had to jump through to get to where they are.   While I'm so happy that women are being celebrated in their industries, I've also been saddened by the instances where the gap between gender equality rears its head; evidently showing us that we still have ways to go.   In this episode, we'll all collectively talk about our fields today, and what strides still have to be made. Without further ado, let's kick off Season 3!   Episode Highlights:   The barriers each of us had to face going into this field The most ridiculous things said to us How we changed the culture around us Some of the best advocates we've met The SpeakUpOrto Movement and why it's important nowadays   About the Guests: Dr. Alana Munger was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. She played soccer throughout her childhood and was recruited to play at UCLA. In her final season at UCLA, she was a member of the 2013 NCAA Division National Championship Team, which was the 110th NCAA national title for UCLA and the 1st for the women's soccer program. She then went across town to go to medical school at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Upon her graduation from medical school, Dr. Munger received the American Medical Women's Association Janet M. Glasgow Achievement Certificate, presented to women who graduate in the top 10% of their class. Dr. Munger then continued to travel east to attend Yale University for her orthopaedic residency. Dr. Jennifer Weiss is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. Growing up as the daughter of an orthopaedic surgeon, Jennifer saw first-hand how male-dominated the world of medicine is. Throughout medical school, she encountered few female students and fewer women that were aspiring to become orthopaedic surgeons.   From the start, it has always been her goal to help aspiring women to become successful surgeons — and to inspire women to enter the field of surgery and not be intimidated by this largely male profession.   Dr. Weiss actively writes and speaks on the topic of women in medicine. She has served on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Directors, and is currently the Communications Cabinet Chair.  She teaches communication skills to physicians, surgeons, and other health care clinicians both within her large integrated health care system in Southern California and within the Orthopaedic surgery societies.  Her research is widely published, and she is an active leader and speaker within the medical community nationally and internationally.     Connect with Alana:   She Can Fix It Podcast SheCanFixItPod | Twitter @shecanfixitpod |  Instagram shecanfixitpod@gmail.com | Email    Connect with Jennifer:   Jennifer Weiss MD | Website Jennifer Weiss | Twitter Jennifermweiss@yahoo.com | Email     ---   Did you enjoy today's episode? S2 E6: Eradicating Gender Bias with Mechanic Angeline de Luca

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2020 23:50

There is an unconscious and inherent bias against women that exists in our society that results in women getting passed over for opportunities and advancements on simply the basis of gender.  In this episode, I'm joined by Angeline Deluca. She is a power generation technician at a major diesel engine and power systems manufacturer. After completing a two-year tech program, she entered the Cummins Engine Program where she graduated with a 4.0, being the top-scoring student in 14 of her classes, and obtained the sought-after Roger Penske Student of the Year scholarship. I had to admit that when I was introduced to Angeline as a possible guest for The 6%, the field of mechanics hadn't even crossed my mind. This is exactly what makes her perfect for this show. We talk about her motivations and challenges, encounters she's had with contemptuous customers and coworkers, how she's able to push through and rise from trials, what she would say to young women who aspire to be in her field, and many more. If you want to catch Angeline, she will be in one of her favorite events in her now-homeland Oregon at the Oregon Tradeswomen's Career Fair. The second day is open to the public. Angeline will be there to teach how to work with engines together with other women in working in carpentry, electrical, roofing, and etc. More information about the fair can be found here. Episode Highlights: Angeline's childhood and upbringing  What inspired her to pursue this profession Her father's initial reaction to her career choice People who supported her ambition growing up How she handles sexist feedback from customers Her internal and external approach to dismissive coworkers How she controls her anger and frustration The different certifications and levels for mechanics The mentors and cheerleaders in her journey Why women need both male and female allies and advocates The importance of He-ForShe movement in male-dominated arenas What keeps her going despite the challenges Confidence and passion: Angeline's recipe for success The value of having outlets for anger  Why doing what you love is worth all the trials How earning your accomplishments makes you more resilient Countless harassment she experienced in school Stories about coworkers who didn't want her in the job Her relocation and how she's happier where she works now Her public speaking opportunities Advice she would give to women who want to get in her field   About the guest: Angeline Deluca is a generator technician at Cummins Sales and Service in Portland Oregon.  She acquired her Associate's degree in Diesel Mechanics Technology from the Universal Technical Institute of Arizone Inc. She's also completed the Ford Accelerated Training program along with the Cummins Engines program where she was an Awarded Student of the Course in 14 courses. Aside from her mechanic background, she's also done some public speaking and mentoring in the past, being present on podcasts and sharing with audiences what it's like being in the field. Angeline's path wasn't an easy one but it was worth it. From the beginning, she faced objection by some members of her family upon opening up about her career choice. She's also met so many employers, clients, classmates, and workmates who were against having a woman working with them. In spite of all of these, she's able to continue doing what she loves with the help of her loved ones, solid supporters and her confidence and belief in her own skills. Now, Angeline educates other women interested in her field. She imparts her knowledge and wisdom in her passion and urges them to not give up because the prize awaits them.   Connect with Angeline: LinkedIn @angeline-deluca Facebook @angeline.deluca Instagram @angie.savage   Resources mentioned: Oregon Tradeswomen's Career Fair --- Did you enjoy today's episode? Young women who step into male-dominated careers rarely find female mentors to look up to. So it's hard to know - do you need a thick skin? Do you need to suppress aspects of their femininity, to succeed? In this episode, I'm joined by Tanya Hall, CEO of the Greenleaf Book Group. She shares how she has navigated her field and ascended to the top without shedding parts of herself as a woman. She lives the example of being an individual who values her emotions and connects with her feminine parts. I was thrilled to get her as a part of this show, being a female publishing leader, an influencer, and a conduit to getting stories and ideas out into the world. We delve into her childhood, her move from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas, her experience with other women in her field, and why accepting and using your feminine strengths can help you accomplish great feats.   Episode Highlights: Tanya's upbringing as a middle child Her parents' traditional relationship dynamics  How she and her sister rebelled against stereotypical gender roles The lack of female mentors growing up How some women feel competitive toward other women How Tanya pivoted from a career in television into publishing Gender balance in media and how the powerful women there inspired her Why women are great at storytelling Unlearning the idea that women are less valuable than men How Tanya rose from distribution manager to CEO Why working with a sense of purpose creates job satisfaction What a hybrid publisher is and its numerous benefits The pros and cons of self-publishing The upsides and risks of traditional publishing How she came up with her book “Ideas, Influence and Income” Self-acceptance and how it can help you become the best in your field How impostor syndrome still happens to CEOs How being a single mom added to her work stress Flow: The key to career and family balance  Her biggest setbacks and how she got herself back up Reharnessing negative emotions and making them work for you Advice for young women who want to chase their passions   About the guest: Tanya lives in Austin, Texas with her two daughters and three big dogs. She and the girls have developed a tight-knit bond, being proud and supportive of each other. Initially from LA, she moved to Austin Texas because was impressed with its diverse and accepting culture. She found it a great place to raise her daughters. It was only after moving in that she realized that she needed to find a job. She then found an opening for a distribution manager in Greenleaf Book Group. Telling herself she'll find a better paying job as soon as they become settled, she started her career within the company. But pretty soon, she found herself loving her work. Although her tasks started out as primarily listing books in different databases, the part where she worked with authors sparked a fire in her. She fell in love with how passionate they were. Knowing that she had a huge impact on making their ideas happen, gave her a strong sense of purpose. Fast forward many years later, she's now the CEO of the company. Her discovery that she has a knack for launching and branding authors and the fact that she is an awesome builder played a fundamental role to her rise in ranks. She also learned to work with, instead of fight against, her individuality. She loves to write, think, and analyze during mornings and becomes more verbal during the afternoons. S2 EP2: Helping Moms Conquer Incontinence Through Innovative ONDRwear With Urologist Jessica Lubahn

Incontinence can serve as a barrier for new mothers attempting to reclaim their bodies and sense of self. The interplay of shame and discomfort in needing to wear “diapers” or poorly-designed leak-proof underwear prevents moms from participating in those crucial mood-boosting, feel-good activities. In this episode, I'm joined by urologist, Dr. Jessica Lubahn. She wears many hats: She's a urologist, mom, wife and an entrepreneur. She's also carefully crafted ONDRwear - underwear that is both stylish and protects against leakage. In The 6% with NancyMD podcast, I interview people who I admire from afar, but I'm fortunate to be able to interview someone I call a dear friend. This was a really wonderful and special episode for me. We talk about her own experience with incontinence, how women get back in touch with their carefree and fun-loving selves during motherhood, the ups and downs of her business, and what it's like being one of the few women in the field of urology. Episode Highlights: Her Chinese upbringing and how being second-born shaped her The influential people in her life who helped her with life choices Why she decided to pursue urology instead of plastic surgery How incontinence affects mothers' confidence and limits activities The burden of pursuing a social-media-perfect life  Her inspiration for her entrepreneurial pursuits Determination and grit: Keys to succeeding in business challenges How women in power still encounter issues regarding gender imbalance Workplace harassment and the downsides of being “one of the boys” How female-founded companies get funded at lower rates About the guest: Dr. Jessica Lubahn is a Urology Specialist with over 12 years of medical experience. She finished her degree in medicine from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Her residency was completed in Dallas, Texas at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She's also a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology. She's accepting new patients and telehealth appointments and dedicated to providing the best care in areas of general urology, women's health, robotic and laparoscopic surgery, kidney and bladder cancer, and no-scalpel vasectomy.  Having experienced a tough delivery herself and being a urologist, Jessica is well-aware of the issues women who've undergone vaginal delivery and childbirth go through. And although most consider urinary leakage as a minor issue, she understands that it's a strong enough deterrent to stop moms from doing what they want to do. Activities like going to the gym and playing with the kids (ex: trampoline) can be cancelled because they feel uncomfortable wearing bulky pads. Her own experiences with incontinence combined with her specialization urged her to design ONDR - a high-tech and much-needed sleek underwear that fits both function and form. It contains a plant-based liner composed of sustainable modal and seaweed fibers, making it antimicrobial and odor-resistant. It's also ultra-thin and incredibly soft. Available in high waisted brief, boy short, thong and bikini, this machine-washable underwear is also highly-absorbent and boasts zero-leakage. It does not sacrifice protection for comfort being able to hold ¼ cup of liquid while maintaining dryness and comfort all day. When she's not busy with her business or practicing urology, she loves to hike, snowboard, and travel. Numerous notable women have made their mark in the world but there are only a handful in traditional history education who get the recognition that they deserve.  In this episode, I'm joined by Elliana Welby, an 8th grader and a futsal player. Despite her youth, she's making giant steps towards gender equality. She realized that her history classes were not teaching in a gender-equitable fashion, so she took action. She founded the website womencreatinghistory.com - which aims to give anyone easy access to data on remarkable women. I am so excited to have Elliana on The 6% podcast and learn more about her and her site. She's included sections such as Nobel Prize winners, LGBTQ+ women, sports, science, and mathematics on her site, and already has more ideas in growing it.  Elliana and I talk about the challenges she's encountered while creating this project, why gender equality still needs a huge cultural shift, and why it's especially important for young girls to have other successful women to look up to. Episode Highlights: The unsettling experience that pushed her to create her website Her first attempts and unapproved projects in motivating other girls How she turned her idea of an empowering website into reality The female political figure from history she'd love to talk to for 15 minutes Her advice to her 10-year-old self about being a woman What her classmate said that embarrassed her and almost made her quit Connect with Elliana: Elliana's website womencreatinghistory.com --- Did you enjoy today's episode? Women were long steered away from STEM fields, including engineering, as it was thought that women did not possess the analytical skills to excel.    Girls and women are systematically tracked away from science and math throughout their educations, limiting their training and options to go into these fields as adults. The gender gaps are particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid jobs of the future, like computer science and engineering.   Join me in this episode as I interview Dr.  Erica Fischer, one of the small percentage of women working in the civil engineering and construction industry. Erica is a Structural Engineering Professor, Earthquake Reconnaissance Disaster Researcher, and a licensed Professional Engineer in the states of California and Washington. She got her Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. Prior to becoming a professor at Oregon State University, she was a structural engineer in New York and Seattle where she focused mainly on renovations and retrofits of existing buildings.   She has served in a number of positions throughout Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), from president of the Purdue EERI student chapter to becoming one of the founding members of the EERI Younger Members Committee and Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Team.   Erica strives to provide opportunities for younger members of the organization to have a voice so they can take active roles and expand the awareness of their committee.   In this conversation, Erica walks us through the things she does as an engineer and the research projects she's currently working on. Erica shares her experience being the only woman in her engineering class and how she was treated when she entered the male-dominated engineering workplace.    Find out how having a community helped her bounce back from failures and how she didn't succumb to the roles and expectations society has placed on her and on women in general.   Episode Highlights: Why looking young as a woman can sometimes be challenging in a workplace dominated by men Erica talks about the percentage of females working in the engineering industry The importance of imagination and why it should be taught early Why you should maintain your individuality Dealing with imposter syndrome Why Erica decided to shift from industry into the academia Erica's disaster research project Learning to fail and then bouncing back again Why you should be in a community of like-minded people who lift you up   Connect with Erica Twitter @erica_fischer Linkedin Erica Fischer - website Learn more about Erica and her work at EERI

2020 has been a year defined by the COVID pandemic and heightened attention to long-standing racial inequality and excessive force in law enforcement.  This episode is a follow-up interview with Penny Harrington, our guest in episode two. She was the first female to become chief of a major city police bureau in the United States. And although the 6% podcast focuses mainly on women in male-dominated fields, at the heart of all of these issues are the same - systemic bias and inequity. This is why I felt that this added episode was important and timely.  Penny and I talk about the recent horrifying cases of people of color being subjected to excessive police force, training programs that contributed to the law enforcement culture, how technology has impacted policing, and how hiring more women in the police force can help de-escalate potentially deadly encounters.  We also discuss Penny's intervention with a problematic police officer, why she banned the use of the chokehold in 1985, and why a massive cultural change in the police force and a societal shift in the country are the lasting solutions to this long-standing issue.  Episode highlights: Attitudes toward race and bias in Penny's upbringing Why we need to raise our children to value racial equality Penny's insightful research on police brutality Why female police officers are greatly needed today Alpha male culture and leading through bullying in the police force Why de-escalation of conflict should be valued in the police training The lack of accountability of police officers and encouragement of shootings  Absence of gun control and its effect on policing The role of counseling in the police force Political inaction and its effects  Get in Touch with Penny: www.pennyharrington.com Email: chiefpenny@aol.com Please consider supporting organizations that challenge racial injustice: Equal Justice Initiative Black Lives Matter  NAACP  --- Did you enjoy today's episode? Ep02: Pioneer and Groundbreaker Penny Harrington

My heart was heavy as I decided to release this pre-recorded episode. As I was wrestling with that decision, protests were, and likely still are, occurring not just across our country, but all over the world. Though this podcast focuses on women in male dominated fields, what is at the heart of this is inequity, bias, systemic injustice. We are hurting, angry, and in shock. But I realized that maybe more than ever it's important to hear about those who have advocated for change in eliminating excessive force and police brutality, including those from within the system. My guest in this episode is Penny Harrington. She began working as a policewoman in 1964, when there were only 12 women in her department of over 800 officers. In 1985, she was appointed chief of the Portland Police Bureau - the first woman in the country to hold this position. Clearly, being a woman in law enforcement was rare and had challenges, and being a leader in the field, even more so. She later became a special assistant to the California State Bar's director of investigations to handle a wide range of special projects. She has served as an advisor for the US Department of Justice under Janet Reno, and she has testified for the US Civil Rights Commission. She became known as the foremost expert in the US on women's issues in policing. In 1995, she co-founded The National Center for Women & Policing. According to the NCWP, the organization promotes increasing the numbers of women at all ranks of law enforcement as a strategy to improve police response to violence against women, reduce police brutality and excessive force, and strengthen community policing reforms. I want to make it clear that I realize how complicated the relationship is between law enforcement and the community at large, especially for the disenfranchised and the underrepresented. For too many, this relationship is broken. No one person or organization could possibly have all the answers, but I felt that hearing the story of one woman who has been fighting for over 50 years on issues of equity was particularly compelling to me. Today, at age 78, she lives on the Central Coast of California, and has never truly retired. In fact, just before the release of this episode, she was testifying before the US Senate in front of the US Senate Justice Committee on George Floyd. In this episode, Penny will share with us her story and career experience in law enforcement. She talks about her steep journey of rising through the ranks from being a rookie to becoming a leader. Episode Highlights: What led Penny down the path of law enforcement Challenges when entering a field that is not saturated with women Standing firm in what you believe Pay gaps, rising through the ranks and smashing glass ceilings Sex discrimination in the workplace Penny's experience leaving the Portland police department How Penny became a pioneer to opening door for females to work in the criminal justice system Co-founding The National Center for Women & Policing Why women should not undervalue themselves Life in "retirement" Connect with Penny www.pennyharrington.com Email: chiefpenny@aol.com Mentioned in this episode: The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan Triumph of Spirit: An Autobiography by Chief Penny Harrington Please consider supporting organizations that challenge racial injustice: Equal Justice Initiative www.eji.com Black Lives Matter www.blacklivesmatter.com NAACP www.naacp.org --- Did you enjoy today's episode? The 6%" is a podcast dedicated to women thriving in traditionally male-dominated fields. As a female orthopaedic surgeon, I belong to the 6% that are women in this field - and thus the inspiration for the title. The birth of this podcast came about when I was at an airport and saw a female commercial airline captain. Though I didn't know her, I wanted to talk to her and ask her all about her life and path - and I wanted to hug her, knowing she likely experienced many of the same challenges that I had. I realized that across disciplines and careers, we have parallel experiences and struggles in following our passions. My audience includes women and men who enjoys hearing inspiring stories of grit, perseverence, resiliency, but I also hope to inspire the next generation of women surgeons, scientists, firefighters, engineers, CEOs. I'm Dr. Nancy Yen Shipley, and in every episode, you'll get to hear inspiring stories of women who are thriving in male-dominated fields, and how they were able to realize their goals and overcome the challenges that they've faced.  In "The 6%", I talk to women about how they arrived at their careers, and the facets of their lives that brought them there. We talk about imposter syndrome, microagressions, barriers to entry, pay gap, mentoring, obstacles and failures - more importantly, how we get up from those failures. We all need motivating and inspiring stories to keep us going, especially during these unprecedented times. In this kick-off episode, I'm going to share my story on how I became an orthopaedic surgeon and overcame the challenges of being in a male-dominated field.
