Eva Hausman, Silent co-founder of the Mothers' Day Movement (MDM) joins to remind us that $35B are spent on Mother's Day and what if for the cost of a bouquet of flowers we could change a life? Eva's interest in starting this organization grew out of a column in The New York Times by Nicholas Kristof, where he made the case for moving the apostrophe in Mother's Day so it honors not just one mother, but underserved mothers everywhere. It advocates shifting a portion of Mother's Day gift giving to a carefully selected charity each year in honor of a woman or person they love. Joining Eva is Karen Olson, founder and CEO emeritus of Family Promise, a national non-profit organization. Karen has dedicated her life to transforming the futures of homeless and low-income families. Family Promise is the 2025 Mothers' Day Movement beneficiary. Since 2011, MDM has raised over $1 million, in maternal health, education, hunger, clean water, and human trafficking, and has been featured in The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and NPR.Here are the topics we covered:0:00 Introductions2:47 MDM Mission4:57 MDM Impact 6:20 Family Promise Choice7:33 Family Promise Mission12:16 Misconceptions about Homelessness13:29 Homelessness Trends15:00 MDM Contribution to Beneficiary16:50 Advice 20-Something SelfMemorable Quotes“It's time to move the apostrophe so that it becomes not just Mother's Day honoring a single mother but Mothers' Day, an occasion to try and help mothers around the globe as well." Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times “With cutback in programs, homelessness will increase. When we cut food programs and money for housing, people will end up in the streets.” Karen Olson“Engage in what you believe in.” U.S. Sen. Elissa SlotkinHere are the 3 Takeaways: For the price of a bouquet of flowers, we can save a life by donating to MDM. Can you believe that $35 Billion was spent in the US on Mother's Day last year?! 100% of your donation to MDM goes towards helping Family Promise achieve their mission and the 2.5 million children in the United States who experience homelessness. Founded in 1988, Family Promise is the nation's leading organization addressing the crisis of homelessness for families with children. With nearly 200 sites across the country, Family Promise leverages local assets, implements real solutions, and advocates for families facing homelessness. As mentioned in the episode:Donation Link Mothers' Day Movement 2025 Family Promise campaign: https://www.mothersdaymovement.org/2025-family-promiseMore about Eva:Born in 1943 in Bridgeport, CT to Jewish refugee parents from Nazi Germany, Eva was privileged to be the only member of my family to be born in the United States a country her parents adored. Her volunteer activities are many and varied but are primarily related to diversity, civil rights and defending against discrimination. She served on the CT board of the Anti-Defamation League for the last 30 years and received multiple awards for her service. More about Karen:Karen's journey began in the mid-1980s when she first committed herself to the noble cause of advocacy for the disenfranchised and homeless. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Hercule Van Wolfwinkle (@portraitsbyhercule)Hercule has been called lots of things throughout his life, an artist certainly wasn't one of them. But all of that changed one late summer afternoon in 2020 when, whilst trying to coerce his young son into making some thank you cards, he doodled a picture of their family dog. The picture was rubbish, so naturally he stuck it on Facebook with the following comment: ***FOR SALE***Beautiful hand drawn pictures of your favourite family pets. Just send me a photo and I can produce a unique and wonderful piece of art that will grace any home and make the memories of your furry friends last a lifetime. Some examples have been posted (I know it's hard to tell but the photographs are the picture on the left in each one).£299 ono. No VAT. Little did he know that his work would go viral and his art would soon be in high demand with requests for portraits flooding into his inbox in their tens of thousands. Request from all over the globe.Hercule's self-proclaimed ‘ultra-realistic' style is akin to that of a small child who has never seen an animal before and is only just learning how to hold a pencil properly, but people like it. A large social media following and worldwide media coverage catapulted Hercule into the limelight and he has used this exposure to raise money for his chosen charities; Turning Tides Ending Local Homelessness and StreetVet.To date he has raised over £300,000 and counting with his pet portraits and this fundraising has seen Hercule receive a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister, recognised by The Big Issue as one of their 100 Change Makers for 2021, and named as the ‘Creative Fundraiser of The Year' at the 2022 Just Giving Awards .The merchandise and print sales from this site are not direct charity sales, however a minimum of 10% of all profits are donated to the chosen charities. For more information on the work of Pure Evil go tohttps://herculevanwolfwinkle.co.ukTo Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg Hosted on Acast. The podcast "The Dish on Health IT" is brought to you by Point-of-Care Partners, a distinguished health IT consultancy. In the opening minutes of the episode, the hosts, Pooja Babbrah and Jocelyn Keegan, set the stage for a dynamic conversation focused on the HL7 Da Vinci Project and its real-world implementation results.Introducing their guests, they warmly welcome Anna Taylor, Associate Vice President of Population Health and Value-Based Care at MultiCare, and Heidi Kriz, Director of Medical Policy and Medical Management at Regence. Both guests are not only accomplished professionals but also members of the HL7 Da Vinci Project, where they play pivotal roles as early implementers of the Da Vinci Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) Implementation Guides. The hosts underscore the key themes of the episode, which revolve around sharing insights from early implementation projects, understanding the tangible benefits and returns on investment, and exploring how their experiences in the Pacific Northwest can serve as a model for nationwide FHIR adoption. As the hosts and guests delve into the discussion, they shed light on the core issues they are working to address. Heidi Kriz highlights the existing silos in healthcare, where payers and providers often work independently, using different data standards and requiring access to multiple portals. They recognize the need to promote a common language and reduce the administrative burden of healthcare processes. A major area of concern is prior authorization, which often leads to delays in care. Their aim is to make the process more transparent and incorporate it into the provider's workflow, thereby automating several steps that currently require manual intervention.Anna Taylor supplements this perspective, emphasizing that their goal is to find a many-to-many solution that involves multiple stakeholders. With thousands of members to care for and thousands of providers to collaborate with in the MultiCare Connected Care ACO. To navigate the complexities of these relationships, they aim to streamline data administration, allowing more resources to be devoted to direct patient care. Open standard APIs, like FHIR, play a pivotal role in this quest for a comprehensive, interoperable solution.Jocelyn Keegan highlights the significance of implementation guides within the Da Vinci Project. She underscores the importance of repeatability and the need to get information to where it's needed, thus improving overall efficiency and user experience. The hosts and guests underline the role of collaboration as the linchpin of their endeavors. They emphasize the necessity of involving diverse stakeholders, including providers, patients, community organizations, and other contributors to the healthcare ecosystem. The objective is to create a harmonious and collaborative environment that benefits all parties involved.Heidi Kriz shares the story of how Regence, from a business perspective, became engaged in the Da Vinci Project. The organization's CEO and leadership recognized the need to enhance the member's experience, particularly regarding the prior authorization process. This realization prompted a series of discussions and plans to implement collaborative, interoperable solutions. In the early moments of this podcast, the stage is set for a conversation that promises to explore healthcare's complexities, emphasize the role of collaboration, and advocate for interoperability. The guests, Anna Taylor and Heidi Kriz, offer valuable insights from both the provider and payer perspectives. They highlight the need for automation, standardized processes, and the creation of a seamless healthcare ecosystem, ultimately aiming to enhance the patient experience and streamline administrative tasks. When asked about key insights or any “aha!” moments. Heidi shares that it was realizing the power of collaboration between a payer and a provider. The ability to come together to solve complex healthcare transactions and streamline processes marked a profound shift in their approach. The synergy between MultiCare and Regence in tackling a common goal was a testament to the potential of collaboration in the healthcare ecosystem.Heidi's second aha moment came when they went live in October 2022. After years of hard work and dedication, seeing their vision become a reality was truly amazing. The initial results were already impressive, but Heidi recognized that they were just scratching the surface of what could be achieved in terms of process automation and instant information delivery. She also highlighted the importance of involving patients in the process. The ability to provide timely information to both providers and members, enabling them to make the best decisions for their care, was a transformative idea.Another valuable lesson for Heidi was the necessity of embracing failure as part of the innovation journey. Adapting and making changes based on feedback and evolving needs was crucial, even if it meant not getting everything right the first time.As for Anna, her aha moment was realizing that the combination of a business-centered approach and the right technology expertise was key to success. It wasn't a matter of choosing between one or the other; both were essential. This perspective underscored the importance of collaboration between these two aspects of healthcare organizations.Anna also shared the concept of the "magic button," where providers found immense value in a simplified, streamlined process. The idea of having a single point of access to manage transactions and receive instant responses became a game-changer, simplifying the lives of providers and driving home the importance of automation. Both Anna and Heidi spoke about the remarkable return on investment they experienced. Anna cited the Data Exchange for Quality Measures (DEQM) implementation, where they saw immediate returns by closing quality gaps and receiving financial incentives. The investment in developing these open standard APIs proved to be worthwhile, not only in terms of financial gains but also in making providers' lives easier. The discussion revealed that the journey to healthcare transformation through initiatives like the Da Vinci Project is challenging but entirely feasible. Success hinges on a combination of collaboration, transparency, and a willingness to embrace change. The ability to iterate and adapt is essential, and organizations that strategically invest in these initiatives will position themselves for long-term success in the evolving healthcare landscape. In this podcast segment, Anna Taylor and Heidi Kriz discuss their experiences and insights regarding healthcare interoperability and the impact of open standards and APIs in the healthcare industry.Anna emphasizes the importance of embracing open standards and APIs, highlighting their potential to transform the healthcare landscape. She encourages organizations to take a close look at their current processes, especially if they are spending a significant amount of time and money on old-fashioned ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) packages. By adopting open standards and APIs, they can free up their employees' capacity, transform their culture, and ultimately improve healthcare.Heidi adds that the risk of not adopting these technologies is greater than taking the leap. She cites the staggering amount of money wasted due to the lack of open standards in healthcare and emphasizes the potential for financial savings and enhanced patient care through interoperability. She also stresses that putting patients and people at the core of healthcare is vital. Both Anna and Heidi underscore the importance of community collaboration, particularly through organizations like Da Vinci, which provide resources and support for implementing open standards and APIs. They encourage organizations to start small, focus on foundational changes, and build a culture of transparency and collaboration. As they conclude, they invite more providers and partners to share their success stories and experiences, urging the community to come forward and tell their stories to inspire and educate others. In summary, Anna and Heidi emphasize the transformative power of open standards and APIs in healthcare, the necessity of community collaboration, and the need to embrace change to improve healthcare for all. The discussion also highlights the significant impact these technologies can have on productivity, transparency, and patient care in the healthcare industry.Learn more about this and other Da Vinci Project Implementations: Da Vinci Roundtable Presentations: https://confluence.hl7.org/display/DVP/Da+Vinci+Video+PresentationsCMS Presentation: Catching FHIR: Lessons Learned from Achieving the First Prior Authorization Automation via HL7® FHIR® - https://www.cms.gov/files/document/hiig-august-2023-isc-speaker-slides.pdfFierce Healthcare Article: https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/payers/regence-multicare-team-fhir-enabled-prior-authorizationRevcycle Intelligence: https://revcycleintelligence.com/features/how-a-better-prior-authorization-process-is-rising-from-fhir News Coverage:KLAS Points of Light Award: https://www.mcg.com/client-resources/news-item/mcg-regence-multicare-klas-points-of-light-award/
Remember, you can watch the Superpowers for Good show on e360tv. To watch the episode, download the #e360tv channel app to your streaming device–Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV–or your mobile device. You can even watch it on the web.Devin: Amanda, what do you see as your superpower?Amanda: When Josh first reached out to me, he graduated from NYU Stern Business School. He brought in a few of his middle school friends. I was actually very self-conscious because I didn't really know anything about business. I didn't have a business background or anything like that, but I realized pretty quickly that my superpower is not necessarily the financial, logistical, the minute hard skills but more of the soft skills, more of the way that I relate to people, the way that I can understand people, the way that we're working with teenagers.Devin: Amogh, what do you think is your superpower?Amogh: I think my superpower lies in the fact that I am young, and I drive youth empowerment, youth leadership.Devin: Gavin, what is your superpower?Gavin: I wanted to use my superpower and engage students. So actually, with the organization I helped with, with their first-ever networking workshop. So, I show students how to use LinkedIn, how to send messages to politicians, industry professionals.Years ago, I had Joshua's Heart Foundation's founder, Joshua Williams, on the show to talk about his remarkable organization. At the time, he was a young teenager and had already been at work feeding people who were hungry and food insecure for nearly a decade. When he launched the effort, he understood he was creating a movement to feed those who need help but likely didn't fully appreciate the more radical impact he was having by empowering children and teenagers to lead.Recently, we reconnected, and he introduced me to some of the young people who lead the effort today.Amanda Aviles serves on the newly constituted National Advisory Board. Members of the board are Joshua's Heart alumni volunteers scattered around the country. Some participated with Joshua as peers in the earliest days when their little hands and arms couldn't carry much food but when their minds could immediately grasp the impact of providing food to someone who needed it.Gavin Poore and Amogh Baranwal are both in high school. They are members of the Junior Advisor Board, which has the primary responsibility for leading the organization. They are two of the day-to-day leaders. Both trace their roots in the organization back in time for years. Amogh shared his recollection of volunteering at age six:The one memory that I have that has always stuck with me is that when I was in line, we used to have people come to us, and we would shop with them like a grocery store, so they would get to choose exactly what they wanted to take home. A family came with another six-year-old, and this was the first time I had seen someone who looked like me–we're the same age, we might have gone to the same school, or we might have had similar life experiences at that age. When I gave his family that box of food, I saw his smile brighten up. I was shocked. Something that I take for granted. I never think, “When's the next food going to be on the table?” Or when the next family dinner is going to be. It's something that just happens. So, to see someone my age see so much joy from something that I took for granted really opened my eyes to the many problems that many people face–even at six years old. So, it is cool to tell people that I started volunteering when I was six, but it's sad to know that there are six-year-olds who didn't get that same opportunity because of the circumstances they were put in. So ever since that day, I have been grateful for our Foundation for giving me these opportunities and allowing me to experience giving back firsthand. His story represents well the experiences of other young people who volunteered regularly with Joshua's Heart. The truly remarkable things about the nonprofit founded by a four-year-old may not be the people it feeds but the leaders it builds.AI Episode Summary* This is an interview with three young people involved with Joshua's Heart Foundation: Amanda Aviles, Gavin Poore, and Amogh Baranwal.* Joshua's Heart Foundation was started in 2005 by a young boy named Joshua who had a passion for feeding the hungry.* The foundation's primary mission is to fight hunger and engage and empower youth in that fight.* The organization is facing the challenge of keeping its founders and early participants involved while preserving the youth-led nature of the organization.* The organization is split into three parts: core volunteers, a junior advisory board, and a national advisory board.* Amanda Aviles believes her superpower is her ability to connect with people and understand them, particularly younger individuals.* Amogh Baranwal believes his superpower lies in his youth and the ability to empower and inspire other young people.* Gavin Poore sees his superpower as youth engagement, helping other young people find their voice and engage in positive change.* The organization can be supported through donations, and volunteers are accepted, but mainly from the South Florida area.* The best way to stay in touch with the organization is through its website and social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn.Guest ProfilesAmanda Aviles (she/her):Director of Strategy, Joshua's Heart FoundationAbout Joshua's Heart Foundation: Joshua's Heart Foundation (JHF) was founded in 2005 in Miami Beach, Fla. by Joshua Williams when he was four years old. Phil Heckels, AKA Hercule Van Wolfwinkle, is a pet portrait artist with a self-proclaimed ‘ultra-realistic style' that has gained him worldwide fame and an ever-increasing gaggle of disgruntled customers trying to get their hands on him! But all of that changed one late summer afternoon in 2020 when, whilst trying to coerce his young son into making some thank you cards, he doodled a picture of their family dog. The picture was rubbish, so naturally he stuck it on Facebook.Little did he know that post would go viral and his work would soon be in high demand with requests for portraits flooding into his inbox in their tens of thousands from all over the globe.Hercule's self-proclaimed ‘ultra-realistic' style is akin to that of a small child who has never seen an animal before and is only just learning how to hold a pencil properly, but people like it. A large social media following and worldwide media coverage catapulted Hercule into the limelight and he has used this exposure to raise money for his chosen charities, Turning Tides Ending Local Homelessness and StreetVet. Hercule does not take paid commission requests. All of the portraits are free and are just uploaded to his social media pages in return for a discretionary donation to the charity (more information can be found on the Facebook page). To date he has raised over £260,000 and counting and this fundraising has seen Hercule receive a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister, recognised by The Big Issue as one of their 100 Change Makers for 2021, and named as the ‘Creative Fundraiser of The Year' at the 2022 Just Giving Awards.Visit the website or follow on InstagramIf you love A Dog's Life and would like to help support the show why not become a Patreon backer where you can also have access to some exclusive content. The play has reached tens of thousands of people, with the troupe performing in rehabilitation centers, hospitals, shelters, youth houses, and correction centers, where they use the powerful medium of theater to educate about addiction and show that recovery is possible. The play has also been presented to churches, schools, and communities, usually with no fee, except for raising money for charitable organizations. The cast and crew have formed a not-for-profit organization, Visions Recovery Inc, dedicated to substance use prevention and recovery education. Bob L., the author, producer/director, initially penned the images in his head during breaks on his job in an automotive plant, and after facing initial rejection from community theaters, he sought help from friends and acquaintances to form a cast. The play has won several awards for community service and volunteerism, including the State of New Jersey Governor's Volunteer Award in the Arts and Humanities and the Presidential Points of Light Award.
This episode is one of the most important shows I have done because of my guest... Mr. Joe Dudley, Co- Founder of DudleyQ+ brand Hair Products and Dudley Cosmotology University. Labeled mentally retarded in the first grade, he exemplified the motto of this show by overcoming obstacles to become one of the most sought after business leaders on the talk circuit in the world. What makes this episode so special is the fact that Mr Dudley, a National Black College Hall of Famer, 2005 Trumpet Award Winner, President George Bush's 467th Point of Light Award for Dudley Fellows and Ladies Program, at 85 year old, in very poor health... still wanted to impart his story to inspire the youth of today that they can overcome obstacles to be anything they want to be. While he struggles to give his message...his does it with love and determination... and I am so proud he did it on my show.

This episode is part of a mini series exploring forced displacement as one of the many legacies of conflict. Alice interviews Dr Waheed Arian, author of In the Wars – an autobiography, published in 2021, which narrates his journey of forced migration from Afghanistan to the UK. Dr Arian was born in Kabul in 1983 and his childhood was dominated by the Soviet-Afghan war. His family spent years fleeing the fighting, especially after his father was conscripted into the army, and they took the difficult decision in 1988 to escape to Pakistan, which involved a hazardous mountain journey, dodging terrifying air strikes. Their cramped, difficult living conditions in a refugee camp in Pakistan resulted in Dr Arian becoming seriously ill, with a combination of malnutrition, malaria and tuberculosis. That experience – and the medical care he received – inspired him to start dreaming of becoming a doctor. Dr Arian and his family returned to Kabul when Soviet forces withdrew from Afghanistan; but civil war rapidly broke out, and as the Taliban's grip on power increased, his parents became increasingly concerned that he would be recruited to fight, so they arranged for him to travel to the UK. He was fifteen years old, and on arrival as a refugee he was immediately imprisoned and sent to the Feltham Young Offender Institute. Against all the odds, Dr Arian learnt English, took on multiple jobs in shops and restaurants, and studied in the evenings, gaining the A-levels required to read Medicine at the University of Cambridge. From there, he became a doctor, specialising in radiology, and he now works on the front line in A&E in the NHS. Aware of the ongoing need for more medical support and training in Afghanistan, Dr Arian has set up a charity called Arian Teleheal, which enables volunteer medics based in the UK to advise medical colleagues in Afghanistan and elsewhere, using smart phones, social media and other every-day technologies. Motivated by his personal experiences of trauma and PTSD, he has also developed Arian Wellbeing, a telemedicine project focused on providing culturally-sensitive and trauma-informed care for patients who struggle to access mental health services, particularly refugees. Dr Arian has become a powerful advocate for refugees in the UK, and he has been recognised for his charity work by multiple organisations, including a UN Global Hero Award in 2017, a Rotary International Peace Award in 2018, and the UK Prime Minister's Points of Light Award in 2018. In the podcast, we discuss Dr Arian's journey towards self-healing, via the work that he does helping others. He outlines the vital need for more holistic care to support refugees' physical, mental and social needs. We discuss the power of care and compassion; the day-to-day contributions made by refugees in their new communities; and the right that everyone has to safety, to a normal, settled life, and to hopes and dreams. Like his book In the Wars, Dr Arian's conversation offers moving insights into refugee experiences, critical analysis of current support systems, and powerful truths about refugee rights. We hope you enjoy the episode. To find out more about our wider project on Visualising Forced Migration, please visit our website. Welcome to The Academic Life! In this episode you'll hear about: What inspired Professor Sumner to study wasps. That time she ate a slug. Her grad school research trip to study wasps in the Malaysian rainforest. The complex and varied roles wasps play in the natural world. The importance of approaching the natural world with endless curiosity. Today's book is: Endless Forms: The Secret World of Wasps, which explores these much-maligned insects' secret world, their incredible diversity and complex social lives, and reveals how they hold our fragile ecosystem in balance. Everyone worries about the collapse of bee populations. But what about wasps? Deemed the gangsters of the insect world, wasps are winged assassins with formidable stings. But do wasps deserve this reputation? Wasps are nature's most misunderstood insect: as predators and pollinators, they keep the planet's ecological balance in check. They are nature's pest controllers; a world without wasps would be just as ecologically devastating as losing the bees, or beetles, or butterflies. Our guest is: Seirian Sumner, who is a professor of behavioral ecology at University College London, where she studies the ecology and evolution of social insects. She has published over seventy papers in scientific journals and has received numerous awards for her work, including a L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award, a Points of Light Award from the UK prime minister, and a Silver Medal from the Zoological Society of London. She is a fellow and trustee of the Royal Entomological Society and cofounder of the citizen science initiative Big Wasp Survey. Sumner lives in Oxfordshire, England, with her husband and three children. She is the author of Endless Forms: The Secret World of Wasps (HarperCollins, 2022). When it comes to mindfulness, we all have the tools readily accessible at all times to get started. Mindfulness is simple but powerful and can help address a child's emotional regulation, inattention, and anxiety. In fact, not only children benefit from this practice, but adults as well. But what do we mean by mindfulness? What does it look like and how can we start building these practices into our daily lives? Today's guest shares just that. Andrew Jordan Nance is a bestselling author of both children's books and classroom curriculum on mindfulness practices. He is also the founder of Mindful Arts San Francisco and spends time presenting in schools in the area to help kids develop muscle memory in mindfulness breathing practices. In today's episode, he explains what mindfulness is and how we can use simple breathing exercises to acknowledge our emotions and make good choices in response. His kid-friendly explanations are perfect for students and make mindfulness accessible to all, within the home and the classroom. Show Notes: [2:30] - Mindfulness is the practice of using our breath to focus on our minds, hearts, and bodies. [3:53] - Andrew suggests replacing judgment with kindness. [5:16] - Although a calming practice, mindfulness isn't always for staying calm, but more for just acknowledging and being with our emotions. [6:45] - Andrew does an activity that he does with children to understand big feelings. [8:29] - One of the purposes of mindfulness in schools is to help children develop the muscle memory of taking breaths to relax and think through big feelings. [11:10] - Andrew lists some of the benefits of mindfulness practices. [12:40] - Meditation is important, but mindfulness is different and can be integrated throughout the day. [14:05] - Andrew describes Quiet Coyote breathing and other practices that can be used in the classroom. [16:38] - Mindful Arts San Francisco is a program that Andrew founded. He shares his inspiration to start this program and write his books, specifically Puppy Mind. [19:23] - Puppy Mind is great for elementary aged students, but adults can find value in it as well. [21:02] - The goal is not to have our “puppy mind” go away, but to better manage our attention and emotions. [23:37] - How have things been moving forward with Andrew's presentations and curriculum post-COVID? [24:55] - Breathing practices connect everything together and enhance relationships and focus. [26:54] - Mindfulness is fully accessible to everyone all the time and can be integrated into home life and school. [28:20] - Mindfulness isn't always easy to start, but can impact many areas of a child or adolescent's life. About Our Guest: Andrew Jordan Nance has been an educator since 1990.
