In this thought-provoking episode of the Future of Smart podcast, guest Nicole Lynn Lewis, founder of Generation Hope, shares her personal journey from being a pregnant teenager to a college graduate and a change-maker. She discusses the societal biases and stereotypes that often limit the potential of teen and student parents, particularly within communities of color. Highlighting her organization's work, Lewis talks about the FamilyU program, which collaborates with colleges and universities to create inclusive campuses for student parents. She emphasizes the need for systemic change in the educational sector and the importance of involving student parents in solution-building. Lewis also underscores the inherent value of a college education beyond earning credentials - as a platform for individuals to discover their identity, explore their passions, and decide how they want to contribute to society. The episode concludes with a discussion on the unique skills and experiences that parenting students bring to classrooms and workplaces, challenging the narrative around under-resourced students. Tune in to hear a powerful conversation about changing narratives and creating more inclusive educational spaces.
Generation Hope founder and CEO Nicole Lynn Lewis joins EAB's Christina Hubbard to discuss the unique challenges and needs of students who are providing and caring for at least one child while they attempt to earn a degree. The two provide context around the relative size and educational outcomes of this vulnerable but highly motivated cohort. They also point to smart steps (some simple and some more complex) that forward-thinking universities are taking to value student-parents and the contribution they make to the wider campus community instead of treating them like liabilities.

According to statistics, fewer than 2% of teen mothers earn a college degree before age 30. Furthermore, over half of all parenting college students leave school without a degree. Parent students, who are experiencing the stress of both educational requirements and parental duties, are a demographic who are often neglected and under-resourced by our educational institutions. On this week's episode of the Black on Black education, we sat with renowned author and CEO, Nicole Lynn Lewis. Nicole Lewis is the founder and CEO of Generation Hope, a nonprofit organization that works directly with teen and student parents to ensure they have the opportunities to succeed and experience economic mobility while engaging with education and policy partners to drive systemic change. Nicole Lewis is also the author of a critically acclaimed memoir, Pregnant Girl that retells her experiences being a college parent fighting for opportunities for her and her child. Throughout our session, we talked about her experiences as a Black mother and college student fighting for opportunities, the systemic hardships and social stigmas that student parents face, her transformative work through Generation Hope, the racial inequity of access to reproductive care and education between Black and white communities, the need for federal and local policy support for young families and much more. And then all of a sudden I'm pregnant.” Nevertheless, she made a promise to her mom that she'd go to college no matter what. “Congratulations, you are simply glowing!” “You're going to be a wonderful mother, I'm so happy for you,” are just a few of the phrases said to women who are pregnant. But when it comes to teenage pregnancy and teenage fatherhood, you may not hear those words and most certainly will experience shame and lack of support, at a time when you would need the most support. L. Joy brings Nicole Lynn Lewis to the front of the class to discuss teen parenthood and how we as a society can give the support our young parents deserve.

My guest today is Nicole Lynn Lewis. In her book, "PREGNANT GIRL", Lewis tells her story of being a Black teen mother who entered William & Mary College and graduated with honors four years later. Now the founder and CEO of the non-profit Generation Hope (which helps teen parents apply to and stay in college), Lewis writes with candor about the many hard choices she had to make about how to afford college and raise her daughter—and the many ways the higher education and financial aid systems are not built for student parents, especially parents of color. At a time when almost a quarter of college students are also mothers or fathers, PREGNANT GIRL is a moving illustration of how difficult it is to balance these two identities, and what changes could and should be made to help these student parents reach their goals. KEY POINTS / MAIN TAKEAWAYS: The motivation and mission behind Pregnant Girl. Impacts of the pandemic on student parents. The evolution of the student parent and teen parent experience over the past 20 years. Day-to-day challenges faced by student parents. How higher education institutions have been addressing student parent needs. What is Generation Hope about and what does it do? Policies that keep parents of color from entering and graduating college. The importance of childcare provision policies for student parents. How can we be of help and service to student parents? QUOTABLES: “We're not talking about them. We're not making sure that we understand their experiences and their needs. And there's so much work that has to be done to start putting them on the radar of institutions and policymakers. And I'm hoping that this book does that.” “A lot of our policies or processes are reactions. In conversation with Nicole Lynn Lewis, Founder and CEO of Generation Hope and author of the new book Pregnant Girl: A Story of Teen Motherhood, College, and Creating a Better Future for Young Families.
Nicole Lynn Lewis talks about being a Black teen mother who entered The College of William & Mary and graduated with honors.
As a pregnant teenager, Nicole Lynn Lewis felt ashamed. Now she knows many pregnant teens share the problems she had — including an abusive boyfriend, and being temporarily homeless. She says the odds against pregnant teens going to college and having a career are even greater, if you're Black, like she is. We talk about her new memoir, 'Pregnant Girl.' Also, we hear from Alison Bechdel. Her graphic memoir 'Fun Home,' about coming out and learning her father had secret gay affairs, was adapted into a Tony Award-winning musical. Her new graphic memoir, 'The Secret to Superhuman Strength,' is about her obsession with exercise and the issues that have fed that obsession. And, jazz critic Kevin Whitehead reviews a new Louis Armstrong box set.
"Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women.” —Professor Jessica CalarcoIn this episode, we're focusing on moms, child care, single parenting and teen parenting. We know that women have been hit hard by COVID—causing many to dub the economic downturn a “she-cession.” And as it stands, current U.S. laws and policies are woefully inadequate—leaving mothers, particularly mothers living with low incomes, behind. Luckily, women-led organizations are helping moms by filling in the gaps. How are moms making it through the pandemic? And, how do single moms fit in, especially teenage moms? What should parents generally, and mothers in particular, be demanding of lawmakers and the Biden administration? What are the best ways for the U.S. to 'build back better' after pandemic? We also hear from some of our listeners who are giving shoutouts to the mothers–and stand-in moms—in their lives! Joining us for this very special Mother’s Day episode are special guests: Representative Katie Porter represents the 45th congressional district in Orange County, Calif. She is a member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, the House Natural Resources Committee, and chair of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. As a single working mom, Rep. Porter knows firsthand about the challenges that families face. She’s introduced bipartisan legislation that would more than double the amount families can set aside pre-tax to help pay for pre-school, summer day camp, before or after school programs, and child or adult day care.Nicole Lynn Lewis, founder of Generation Hope, which works with teen parents to apply to, enter and stay in college. She is a former teen mother herself, who put herself through the College of William & Mary with her three-month old daughter in tow. Lewis has been featured on major news outlets including Good Morning America, CNN, NBC Nightly News and The Washington Post. Nicole also serves as an Ascend national advisor with the Aspen Institute and a nationally known author and speaker. Her newest book, Pregnant Girl, was released on May 4, 2021 by Beacon Press. Dr. Aisha Nyandoro, CEO of Springboard To Opportunities and director of Magnolia Mother’s Trust, which this year will give $1,000 per month for 12 months to 100 families headed by Black women living in federally subsidized housing. This week on the show Joseph and Chauncey discussed the usual Blerd talk along with some great topics. From new books ( Pregnant Girl by Nicole Lynn Lewis), to the killing of a teen mom, and MPD drag racing within the city. For the main show, we took a deep dive into gang culture and its significance.
Nicole Lynn Lewis shocked family and friends when she told them she was pregnant her senior year of high school. “I was this honor roll student who was so involved and I had a very clear sense of what I wanted to do with my life. And then all of a sudden I'm pregnant.” Nevertheless, she made a promise to her mom that she'd go to college no matter what. Hear how Nicole went from eight months pregnant, living day to day in a Motel 6, to a college grad and non-profit leader. Plus, how she's helping end the stigma around teen parenting with her organization, Generation Hope. You can follow Nicole Lynn Lewis on Twitter and Instagram @nicolelynnlewis.
