Ask Skift Is the AI Chatbot for the Travel Industry: Ask Skift Your Questions Episode Notes Destinations across the U.S., Canada and Mexico are ramping up their preparations to welcome soccer's World Cup in 2026. And they'll need a substantial influx of money to make hosting the event a success, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam. Officials at this week's Destinations International Annual Convention addressed the challenges of welcoming thousands of visitors for the World Cup. Each of the 11 U.S. host cities is responsible for finding ways to pay for tournament-related expenses. Monica Paul, executive director of the Dallas Sports Commission, said the U.S. federal government doesn't assume most of the cost of major international sporting events, unlike in other countries. Visit Kansas City CEO Kathy Nelson acknowledged the difficulties of securing the funding for World Cup-related operations. Nelson said the organization has to appease governors from both Kansas and Missouri, adding that it's the most contentious issue she's ever experienced. Next, several vacation rental markets that experienced a major post-Covid boom are feeling the effects of oversaturation. That's causing rental rates to plummet and driving investors to sell their properties, writes Short-Term Rental Reporter Srividya Kalyanaraman. Kalyanaraman cites Palm Springs, California as one destination where the surge of licensed vacation rental properties has helped contribute to falling rental rates. She also notes that a growing number of investors in short-term rental properties are looking to exit the sector. Christopher Ledwidge, executive vice president of wholesale mortgage seller TheLender, said supply for rentals went up, and there was a slight drop in demand. Ledwidge also acknowledged that the cost of operating rentals has increased. Finally, American Airlines has raised its earnings outlook for 2023 after reporting a strong second quarter, writes Reporter Jess Wade. The company now expects to earn between $3 and $3.75 per share, an increase from its previous forecast of between $2.50 and $3.50. American said on Thursday it generated a little more than $14 billion in revenue during the second quarter, its highest-ever quarterly revenue. The company also recorded a $1.4 billion profit that Wade notes was made possible in part by a 35% decline in average jet fuel prices.
Ben and Blake recap Canada-Croatia and the rollercoaster of emotions, including Davies' first goal to the bitter disappointment of defeat. They discuss whether or not Herdman's post-Belgium comments were bulletin board material and look ahead to the 2026 North American World Cup. Afterwards, they discuss an impressive weekend of Leafs hockey, the injured blue line stepping up, and whether or not its sustainable. Later on, NBC Sports' Peter King (33:26) joins the show to discuss the Aaron Rodgers injury and Jordan Love's performance in relief. They also discuss two-point conversions changing the game for the Chargers and Ravens with seconds to go, and a QB change for the New York Jets. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.
In this episode of the B Practice MTB Podcast, we rope in one of our favorite #USDH racers, Dante Silva. We've known Dante since he started popping up at popular shuttle zones in SoCal years before he could drive. Now a fun-spirited, high-energy 19-year-old, Dante has harnessed the natural talent he oozed at 12 to become one of the fastest U.S. downhill racers of the modern era. After racing as a supported privateer during his Junior years and first Elite season in 2021, Dante made the jump to the Canyon Collective Pirelli Team for 2022. Never one to waste a hard-earned opportunity, his 2022 season was filled with consistent results and a few moments of glory, highlighted by two top-20 finishes at the North American World Cup rounds. With racing behind him for the year, we chatted with Dante about off-season activities, helping develop Pirelli tires, having Fabien Barel as a line coach, crashing at the U.S. Open, being bored and dying his hair, pants vs. shorts, and so, so much more. We enjoyed this entertaining and at times hilarious conversation, and hopefully, you do too! #MTB #USDH #mountainbike #bikes

The headline news for us here in Canada is that for the first time since its inception in 1987, Canada has failed to qualify for the Rugby World Cup. However, more to the point is the question concerning what has clearly gone so horribly wrong in the last six years. Remember that thrilling match against Italy in the 2015 tournament where we almost caused a major upset. The same tournament where winger DTH van der Merwe was one of the leading try scorers. Go back even further to 1991 where Canada actually competed in a quarter final. Always a feisty and nuggety opponent in the past, Canada are now on the verge or receding into rugby obscurity. Meanwhile, it's not exactly a rosy picture south of the border either, as the USA failed to qualify in their first attempt, after losing the Americas 1 berth at the 2023 World Cup to Uruguay. They now face a tricky road ahead as they have to overcome an increasingly confident and fired up Chilean team, and if that fails then there is the humility of a last chance repechage tournament. Despite the advent of Major League Rugby here in North America it seems there is little if any benefit to the fortunes of the national sides. If anything both Canada and the USA look poorer after 3 years of the MLR. As rugby seems to be going backwards in North America, by contrast in South America it would appear to be going from strength to strength.
