Josette Norris Andrews joins the show after setting an incredible new 2025 world standard in the 5,000m at the BU Last Chance meet, clocking a speedy 14:44.80. “We're kind of on this journey to the marathon. The next logical step is a half marathon. That will be in the new year. We don't know exactly where yet but we want to go attack a half marathon. That's what all the training is focused on and that's why it's been so fun. Not that the training is easy but it's the training that comes the most naturally to me.” My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian Joe Klecker of the On Athletics Club. He joins us with some news that he's gearing up for his half marathon debut in early 2025 after a challenging comeback from injury. Joe is back and looking to tackle a new distance with a keen eye on Ryan Hall's American record in the half marathon. While his 2024 outdoor season was sidelined by a torn abductor, he's now fully focused on the 13.1 mile distance. He doesn't say it, but I think all signs point that it will likely be at the Houston Half Marathon in January, which is traditionally perfect weather and very fast. And while he's not quite ready to step away from the track just yet, Joe is already embracing the marathon mindset and this is one step forward to getting to the full distance with a personal best of 12:54 for 5K and 27:07 for 10K. Joe's incredible speed and dedication are setting him up for a strong entry into the longer distance. So in this episode, we'll hear about his approach to injury recovery, his plans for that debut, all with the guidance of his coach Dathan Ritzenhein and the support of his training partner and Olympic medalist, Hellen Obiri. He also shares why he's hoping for one more team on the track. "My name is “Sintayehu” which means “Someone who saw a lot”... With age, I'm more proud of the meaning of my name. It means what I've seen a lot and it's true from an Ethiopian orphanage to a beautiful life, adoption and a beautiful family and then I decided to go to Florida, Mississippi, and now I ended up here (in Boulder) with the best team, living the best life." Sinta Vissa is a member of the On Athletics Club and just opened up her season this past weekend at the Penn Relays. Before turning pro last year, she was the 2022 NCAA 1500m champion and has now competed at two World Championships for Italy. She was last year's Italian 1500m champion and then had the bad luck of drawing one of the fastest heats in Budapest but did not advance to the semifinals. She did run a 4:01.66 personal best, which also got her the Olympic standard for this year. She's in a good position to be selected by the Italian Athletics Federation with some good performances this season. What I like about Sinta is that her story goes way back to growing up in Ethiopia and then being adopted by an Italian family. She shares her whole story candidly on this podcast about what it was like finding herself in Ethiopia, Italy and then eventually the United States. “I think it's wide open. I think it's hard to compete when you know that people have been at that level and they know what it takes to be at that level. That's one thing that's super hard about it. When you've been there before, you know it's a little bit easier to get back there because you're like, “OK. I know exactly what I need to show up and how I can do it.” But I haven't been thinking about the big ‘few' quite as much as maybe in 2021 when I was just starting to run the 800m at this level. I want to sort of like rely and think about ‘Who am I as a runner?' as opposed to trying to play whoever else's game or emulate someone. It's what works best for me.” I really enjoy watching Sage Hurta-Klecker race because each time out, she's going to put herself in the mix and take big swings. She's done that each of the last three years since turning pro and joining the On Athletics Club in 2022. She's fully committed to breaking through and make a U.S. team in the 800m, which is one of the toughest teams to make. The commitment is admirable. We chatted just days after she got into the blocks and opened up her outdoor season with a local 400m in Boulder. It was a tiny PR of 54.78. It speaks to her range with a 1:57 personal best for 800m and 4:25 for the mile. “All I want is to be healthy and train consistently. That's literally it. I try to keep things as simple as possible. I have a lot of confidence in myself that if I'm there on the start line and I'm prepared, I'm going in and do my thing and do really well…Last year unfortunately was another year where I wasn't able to do that. I do try and take stuff from those tough times. There's a lot to be gained when times are tough.” We continue our mini-series with members of the On Athletics Club as Mac Fleet sits down with Morgan McDonald on a recent trip to Boulder. In this episode, we chat about how he navigated his comeback from injury in 2023 to be able to compete at the World Championships in Budapest and Riga. He's played it a bit cautious with his approach to the indoor season but he's ready to open up the 2024 outdoor campaign with the Australian National Championships. We also get his thoughts on changes he'd like to see in the sport, the success of OAC and much more. Back on the podcast, is fan favorite and interant sensation Andrew Wheating. The man who reached over 4 million people from a clip of our last episode together. Andy is currently the Operations and Content Manager at the On Athletics Club. But long before Andy was working for On to push forward the sport, he was running world-class times and making history on the track. From 2008 to 2012, he won three NCAA titles, made two Olympic teams and a World Championship team, and ran personal bests of 1:44.56 for 800, 3:30.90 for 1500, and 3:51.74 for the mile. Today's conversation is real, open, raw, and one of my all-time favorites because of that. The most impactful thing about it for me was Andy opening up about mental health and the importance of dicussing it for athletes. We also get into the day-to-day of Andy's job progressing the OAC/On as a company, an egg nog mile he did back in the day, when one can start listening to Christmas music, and more. For this week's podcast, we spoke to European Bronze medallist in the 1500m, Mario García Romo. Mario ran his personal best of 3:30, when he finished 4th at the World Champs in Eugene last summer. Every few months, I have a conversation that blows me away; today is one of those conversations. From the minute Andy hopped on the call, I knew we were in for a good one. Today on the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with the one and only Andrew Wheating. I ask my guests before every conversation, "What will make this a home-run for you?" and Andy replied something to the extent of "I'm an open book so don't back from asking anything you're curious about." Well, I took that to heart and asked Andy many deep questions surrounding his career and life. This made for a raw and impactful conversation that blew my expectations out of the water. Andy's ability to share stories in an engaging and reflective way I've rarely seen replictaed. So I hope you all enjoy today's conversation as much as I did having it. “Especially this year, what I want to do is be better than last year. I feel like my mentality in the fall and winter was to run better than I did last year. Even though maybe I didn't have the position results I wanted, I PR'ed in every single event. I've accomplished those goals and now for the outdoor season, I just want to win races and be one of the best in the world.” Mario Garcia Romo is a professional middle-distance runner representing Spain and the On Athletics Club. Last year was a massive season for him. He won the NCAA indoor mile title with Ole Miss and then has a disappointing showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships but many people forgot about it when he ended up winning the Spanish 1500m title and then finished fourth at the World Championships in the 1500m in 3:30.20. It was a big personal best and he moved from seventh to fourth in the final 100 meters. He missed that bronze medal by just three-hundredths of a second. He went on to earn a bronze medal at the European Championships before fully joining the OAC in Boulder in the fall. This past indoor season, he broke the Spanish indoor mile record in 3:51.79 at the Millrose Games. In this conversation, you'll hear about his goals for the upcoming outdoor season to try and improve upon last year, being a student of the sport watching Matt Centrowitz videos to become a master tactician, his roots in Spain and much more. "At the end of those two months, I interviewed (two Ethiopian female runners) each of them for an hour and a half and hired a translator. What came out of those interviews was that this was a richly complicated and complex world that I knew very little about and I had barely scratched the surface. They were talking about the relationships with their family members because I had assumed – as a lot of people do – Ethiopia has this rich history of running, therefore, it must be such a prideful thing. It actually turned out that they all said that all their family members disapproved of what they were doing. There were all these things that came up that surprised me. As I later came to learn in anthropology in grad school, you should always follow and ask questions about the things that surprise you because those are the most interesting things." Hannah Borenstein is a good friend of mine who I've had the pleasure of getting to know as a member of The Magic Boost program that I help direct. She is an anthropologist and fellow at the University of Chicago. She's currently working on a book project focusing on women distance runners in Ethiopia. Beyond her academic work, she's also a freelance writer covering race, sports, gender, politics and labor across a variety of publications. She most recently published a story for World Athletics on Sinta Vissa, the Italian middle distance runner who was born in Ethiopia and now runs for the On Athletics Club. I've wanted to get her on the show for a while because she's passionate about telling the stories of Ethiopian athletes and has been a major resource for me in helping me understand some of the contexts around the athletes, their lives and when politics can intersect with it all. "I always have to remind myself that a race is gonna be really hard!" Surely when Alicia Keys sang "this girl is on fire," she was referring (preemptively) to On Athletics Club's Alicia Monson. In 2021, Alicia became an Olympian in the 10K. In 2022, she represented Team USA at World Championships, again in the 10K. And just two months into 2023, the unstoppable streak continues: Alicia just broke the indoor 3000m American Record at the Millrose Games in New York City. Alicia lives and trains in Boulder, CO, where she is coached by Dathan Ritzenhein. In this conversation, she talks about training with OAC, about the team culture, and about why seemingly every member of the team is killing it right now. She also talks about how she has learned to stay focused, stay relaxed, and stay energized during races and hard workouts. (Check out this video for a perfect example.) And if you've ever thought you can't relate to the pros, rest assured, Alicia is one of us: Her on-the-run music of choice is The Greatest Showman soundtrack. In today's episode of The Ready to Run Podcast, we are joined by professional runner, Joe Klecker. Joe competed at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado where he was a 9-time All-American and is currently the school record holder in the 5000m. He turned pro in 2020 with the On Athletics Club in Boulder and became an Olympian in 2020 in the 10,000m. Joe is originally from Minneapolis and both of his parents were professional marathoners and US National record holders in the ultramarathon. He won his first national championship in 2020 where he edged out Grant Fisher in the 10,000m. He went on to finish 9th at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon later that year. In this episode, we discuss some highlights from last season and some factors that have led to his success and his ability to overcome past injuries including a foot injury that happened prior to some of his breakout performances last year. Joe also shares some of his goals for the upcoming season and beyond. Hearing his take on how to maintain Achilles strength provided a unique perspective in our conversation and ties in nicely to a previous recording where Kurt and I discussed Achilles tendon exercise strategies. This episode was recorded just before his 2023 season opener at the BU Invitational where he achieved his goal of breaking the 13-minute barrier in the 5k by going 12:54 which is now the third-fastest indoor 5k for American men! “I think I was ready for a change and I wanted to really see where I could keep growing as an athlete...I wanted that team environment. I took a visit to the On Athletics Club in October and my gut just said, ‘This is where you need to be to be successful.'" Josette Norris was previously a guest on this show back in October 2021 but she's back now after signing a new contract with On and has joined the On Athletics Club. We talk about how the move came together, why she's excited to workout with Alicia Monson and Sage Hurta and how she overcame some mental battles during last year's outdoor season. She is making her OAC debut at the Dr. Sander Invitational on Jan. 28 and then racing the women's Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on Feb. 11. "I don't think anyone goes as hard as a dance floor full of professional or elite runners. Everyone was going bananas." Last year at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, Sage Hurta was in an exciting spot. Off the track, the seven-time All-American had just graduated from the University of Colorado and signed her first professional contract with On Athletics Club. And on the track: She was in the semi-finals of the 800m race, charging into the final 100 meters of the race with plans and dreams to advance to the final and maybe, hopefully make her first world championship team. But then she went down. Sage fell hard, breaking her wrist in the process. It was a heartbreaking day. The good news: 2022 has been the ultimate redemption year. In her first full year as an On-sponsored professional athlete, Sage (who just married teammate Joe Klecker!) entered 2022 having never broken two minutes in the 800m, and then went on to break 2:00 not once, not twice, but three times in the span of just six days. (And then, once more for good measure in August, where she ran 1:57 in Monaco, a new personal best.) She also ran a 1500m personal best (4:01.79) and took the win at the Ed Murphey classic. In this conversation, Sage reflects on 2021, shares her 2022 highlight reel, and looks forward to 2023 and beyond. SPONSORS: UCAN: Click here and use code ALI for 20% off your next UCAN order. "I think she has the talent to be the best in the world in the marathon – just like she's been the best in the world in track and cross-country as well." Last week, Mac Fleet and I traveled to Boulder, Colo. to spend some time with the On Athletics Club and coach Dathan Ritzenhein. We got a chance to sit down and chat about the highs and lows of OAC's 2022 outdoor season + Hellen Obiri's upcoming marathon debut in New York City on Nov. 6. Obiri's move to Boulder has been in the works since she signed with the Swiss sportswear company in January with the intention of focusing on the roads. Ritzenhein worked closely with her agent and former coach Ricky Simms to make the transition as smooth as possible following her 67:05 victory at The Great North Run in September. We also spoke with Obiri about her fall plans a day before she won a silver medal in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. What you're about to listen to is an episode of The Coffee Club Podcast hosted by Morgan McDonald, Geordie Beamish and Olli Hoare. I'm a big fan of the show since it started. I haven't missed an episode. I was honored to be invited on as a guest while I was in Boulder last week on a quick content trip with Mac Fleet. Stay tuned for some of the videos and interviews that we have coming on the CITIUS MAG YouTube Channel. This week I had the pleasure to speak with Alicja Konieczek. She is a Polish runner based in Albuquerque and working with Jackrabbit Race Management. She is an Olympian, finishing 20th in her specialty, the 3000m Steeplechase, at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She is also an On sponsored athlete. Alicja talks about getting started in running in Poland and that she hated it at first, but found some success. She talks about running with her siblings and even following her brother to Western Colorado University. We talk about her journey to Albuquerque and joining the On Athletics Club. She also talks about leaving the team, coming back to Albuquerque and working with Jackrabbit Race Management. She is helping to create and promote races, including the Albuquerque Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day that she is helping to set up. It was fun to hear her talk about finding passions outside of running that she can continue to do after her competitive career is over (though hopefully not for a while). We also talk about how she is now self coached, with Ben Fletcher (previous guest) as a support. She also talks about the European Championships where she finished 4th in the Steeplechase with a time of 9:25.15, in what was the fastest finals in European Championships history. We also talk about the rest of the year and how happy she was to reach the final. She also talks about her next goals and some competition with her sister. Alicja has been on my radar for a while and I was so happy to finally have a chance to talk with her. I hope you enjoy the conversation as well. Cross Country season is already about halfway done. It feels like we are just getting started. There are so many wonderful athletes out there competing and I encourage you to support your local school. It is also the middle of marathon season. I hope everyone is getting in the training they need for the results they want. Stay hydrated, listen to your body, and keep running New Mexico.

In today's episode of the Ready to Run podcast, we'll meet with American professional middle distance runner - Sage Hurta. Sage was born in Buffalo, NY and was a 3-time New York State cross country champion. She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder where she was a 4-time All-American in cross country, PAC-12 800m champion, and 2021 NCAA champion in the mile. She currently lives in Boulder, CO and trains with one of the most exciting teams in professional running - On Athletics Club. We'll discuss her transition from collegiate to professional running, mentorship in sport, and how she overcame a series of bone stress injuries in college. "After coming off of cross country and finishing second the year before, we were all really amped about having a team that could really win if we got it right. Obviously, it didn't turn out that way, especially for me. I had a terrible race at Nationals. It was still about going out there and going for that. Giving everything I had to my team is super important to me. That's what I also like about On. They're as team-oriented as a pro group can be. I really appreciated that and that will definitely help me in this next stage to have that team vibe but still be bought into something." Yared Nuguse just wrapped up his career at the University of Notre Dame, where he was an All-American and two-time NCAA champion with the 1500m outdoors and indoor DMR in 2019. He also held the NCAA record in the 1500m with a 3:34.68, which stood until it was broken this spring. He qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 1500m after finishing third at the Olympic Trials. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from the Games in Tokyo due to a quad injury that he sustained while in Japan. So what's next? He's here with the news that he has signed with On Running and joining the On Athletics Club to work under coach Dathan Ritzenhein. Hear more about the move, what went wrong this past year but why things have turned and are now going right heading into the U.S. Championships, where he will be contesting the 1500 meters. Alicia Monson is a professional runner for the On Athletics Club and a 2021 Olympian in the 10,000 meters. Before turning pro, she was a star at the University of Wisconsin. Just a few weeks ago, she won her first national title with a win at the USATF Cross Country Championships in San Diego. In this episode, we touch on a bit more of her personality and dive into why so many things have been going right for her in the past two years. She's got big goals to make the U.S. national team in the 10,000 meters again for this summer's world championships. I think she does a great job providing insight into her mindset during races and when she makes her move to break the competition. Stick around for her recap of the super hot Olympic Trials 10,000m race and her funniest drug testing story. HOW TO SUPPORT THE PODCAST Interested in sponsoring the show?
