She now coaches women to lead their most healthy life and love it, so they can "shed the wobble", get lots of energy and lead a long and healthy life. Dr. Kerek shared that in order to make changes, you need to step forward and commit to a healthier lifestyle. It's definitely hard however she suggested to turn that around by saying "it's easy" to be where I am and "it's easy" to adapt to where I want to be. We further chatted about goals and how important it is to keep you eye on your goal while enjoying the present moment. Dr. Kerek also shared some amazing insight on how our children view us as adults; in other words, the best (2) gifts you can give your children is your own happiness and vegetables! As far as food and emotions with our children, her advice was to not use food to modify a child's behavior and shared a personal story of how she did just that! Hi!   Today on the podcast I'm chatting with Dr Orlena Kerek. Dr Orlena trained as a pediatric doctor in the UK. She now works as a health coach, teaching busy women to lead their most healthy life in a way they love, so they can feel amazing, lead a long life and teach their kids healthy living habits.   Like me, Dr Orlena also has four kids, so we start off by talking about picky eaters. We then chat about the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, and what is the Mediterranean diet, before moving on to talking about the importance of building healthy habits. Dr Orlena has a book coming out on 27th April 2022 called ‘Building Simple Habits to a Healthy Me” so we chat about that. But for many of us that goal may seem too far out of reach to even consider it. Work, laundry, cleaning, parenting, and cooking for kids, who probably won't eat anything anyway, can leave you with no time for yourself, causing frustration, fatigue, and stress. This results in overeating, poor nutrition, emotional upheaval, and sickness. But that doesn't have to be the case. Dr. Orlena Kerek, MBChB is a pediatric doctor from Great Britain who lives in Spain with her husband and 4 young children. She was feeling trapped in that sort of crazy life full of turmoil causing low self-esteem and anger”. She wasn't the person she wanted to be. Through extensive research she began to understand and work on her own emotional wellbeing. She started prioritizing her own self-care and discovered that being a working mom, eating healthy, nutritious foods and looking after yourself is possible. She became a health, weight and life coach to help people say goodbye to frustration and have an amazing, healthy life. She discusses her FOUR PILLARS of healthy living for families:1) nutrition2) exercise3) sleep4) emotional wellness and mindsetShe states that making changes is like a spiral...start with little changes, and they spiral into bigger and more significant changes. Tara notes that the initial steps of developing a new routine are the most stressful aspect of making healthy changes, but it improves with practice. Dr. Orlena urges us to listen to both parts of our brains; the planning part of our brain, and the part that defaults to old habits and temptations. We need to take care of both of those parts.Chocolate isn't bad all the time, she says. So, phew.Dr. Orlena notes that younger kids are naturally picky eaters, but oftentimes the mother has the role of setting the tone for healthy habits in the home. She advises against pressuring their kids to eat, but instead focus on having a healthy repertoire of food at all times. She notes that refined carbs should be limited, whereas vegetables (and sometimes fruits) should be given unlimited access. She feels that kids aren't actually able to regulate their own intake, especially if presented with foods high in salt and sugar.We briefly discuss cultural differences, as the United States doesn't regulate the type of foods kids consume, whereas Spain (where Dr. Orlena resides) limits kids' access to unhealthy food during snack and mealtimes. Also, portion sizes are smaller outside of developed countries.When it comes to exercise, try to focus on activities that are fun for the entire family, and push past your kid's cries of "No, I don't want to!"  Technology such as social media and video games can distract families from getting enough exercise.Finally, Dr. Orlena describes the mindset that goes into making healthier decisions, consisting of developing positive thinking and being aware of the relationship between thoughts --> feelings --> action (behavior). Dr Orlena trained as a paediatric doctor in the UK. In 2011 she moved to Spain with her husband and 2 young kids. Cutting a long story short, she "accidentally lost" her medical career after having her twins and turned to the internet to keep herself busy. In the last few years, she has pivoted to teaching frustrated professional mothers to lose weight by leading a healthy life so they can feel fit and fabulous. The 4 pillars of self care that she teaches are nutrition, exercise, sleep and emotional wellness. She draws from her own experiences (still walking the trenches of parenting!) as well as the latest scientific research and thinking.
