EP150: Losing holiday weight, a new challenge and the infamous pork chop In this solo episode, I'm catching you up on everything going on behind the scenes - because let's be honest, getting back into routine after a holiday isn't always easy. I share my experience coming home from an epic American road trip, gaining a bit of weight (which I was totally ok with), and the resistance I felt trying to get back into the swing of things. But more importantly, I talk about the 84-day challenge I've just started—what it involves, why I'm doing it, and how it aligns with my long-term approach to sustainable fat loss, not just quick fixes. From body composition goals to calorie tracking, zone 2 cardio, and daily non-negotiables, I break down how I'm staying consistent while maintaining muscle and a healthy mindset. Whether you're getting back from a holiday, planning one, feeling stuck, or need inspiration to set your own challenge, this episode is packed with real talk, strategy, and support. Key moments: Post-holiday honesty – Why I gained weight and why it didn't derail me Starting the 84-day challenge – What it involves, and how it's different from extreme diets Nutrition focus – Balancing calories, protein, and whole foods for sustainable fat loss Exercise plan – Daily movement, zone 2 cardio, and building a realistic routine Mindset over motivation – Why internal dialogue is the key to long-term change If this episode resonated with you, I'd love for you to leave a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts or give the show a rating on Spotify! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Your support helps more people discover the podcast and join the Weight Loss Warrior Tribe. EP148: Nick's Weight Loss Story: From Roadside Habits to Slimming World Icon In this episode, I chat with Nick, a down-to-earth guy from Surrey who made a powerful transformation - not just in weight, but in mindset, habits, and lifestyle. As a long-time manager for the RAC, Nick's days were often spent on the road, eating at petrol stations and fast food chains, living a life that eventually caught up with him. What followed was a major wake-up call: sleep apnoea, asthma, sky-high cholesterol, and pre-diabetes. But what makes Nick's story so relatable is how he didn't do it alone - he tackled it with a group of close mates who all joined Slimming World together, creating a support system that made the process not just manageable, but even enjoyable. Nick shares the power of community, the reality of setbacks, and what it really takes to build a lifestyle that lasts. Amy was such an inspiring guest and received amazing feedback when it was first shared. Often, it can take a harsh reality check to realise just how bad our health or situation has become. Weight gain tends to happen over time, and we find ways to adjust and cope with the increasing level of difficulty of doing every day tasks like walking up the stairs. In this episode Amy shares how humiliation and the feeling of letting her daughter down at a theme park inspired her to make a change. Amy explains how she took that first step to join Slimming World after a number of months of declining offers to go with a friend. Finally she changed her mind and hasn't looked back since.  In this weight loss success story, I found the level of discipline that Amy developed incredible and massively inspiring. How to stop the scales ruining your weight loss journey

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2024 39:06

EP123: Why the scales are ruining your weight loss journey In this solo episode, I dive into a topic that I know many of you struggle with: how the number on the scale can impact your emotions, self-worth, and overall success. I've been there myself, and I want to help you understand that the scale is just one data point in your journey toward health and well-being. I'll share my own experiences and lessons from coaching to show you how you can shift your mindset around weighing yourself. The truth is, success is about building consistent habits—like staying active, maintaining good nutrition, and taking care of your mental health—rather than obsessing over the number you see on the scale. I talk about how I've learned to view the scale as “just data,” which has helped me (and my clients) stop letting the ups and downs of daily or weekly weigh-ins ruin progress. I'll explain how factors like glycogen and water retention can impact your weight, and why that number doesn't always reflect fat loss or the success of your efforts. In this episode, I also challenge you to focus on other measures of success—like how your clothes fit, how much energy you have, and the non-scale victories that really matter when creating a healthy lifestyle. I share practical strategies to help you change your relationship with the scale and use it as a tool, rather than a source of frustration. Key Takeaways: The scale does not define your success. Your habits, consistency, and behaviors do. Weight fluctuations are often due to factors like glycogen and water retention, not just fat gain or loss. Viewing the scale as “just data” can help you stay emotionally grounded and focus on what really matters. Celebrate non-scale victories like better-fitting clothes, increased energy, and healthier habits. Focus on building a sustainable lifestyle by creating small, consistent actions over time. I invite you to take a step toward changing your mindset by scheduling a free coaching session with me. Let's work on focusing on small habit changes and celebrating non-scale victories so you can achieve your long-term weight loss and health goals. Please take care while listening, and seek support if needed. Episode Summary: In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Amy Edwards, a remarkable woman from Scarborough who has achieved something truly inspiring. Amy has lost over 10 stone (140 lbs) in under 12 months, all while juggling the challenges of being a mother of four young children and overcoming serious mental health struggles. We dive deep into her journey, discussing how she transformed her life with a calorie deficit, running, and an unwavering commitment to her family. Her story is a powerful reminder that no matter where you start, change is possible. Amy shared her background, explaining how she and her family moved from Surrey to Scarborough in 2020. As a mother of four kids under three, she talked about how the demands of raising young children impacted her health, both mentally and physically. She bravely opened up about her lifelong struggle with OCD, disordered eating, and multiple suicide attempts. Amy explained how these challenges shaped her relationship with food, starting in her teenage years and continuing into adulthood, as she battled both mental health issues and weight gain. The turning point for Amy came when she faced the reality of her weight gain—a bridesmaid dress that didn't fit and photos from a wedding that shocked her into realising it was time for a change. She decided to take control of her health, not only for herself but for her children, who were her biggest motivation. Amy lost 10 stone by committing to a calorie deficit and using her Fitbit to track her activity and food intake. She also started the Couch to 5k program, which gradually built up her fitness, despite the challenges of balancing motherhood with the demands of a healthier lifestyle. Amy also shared her experience with Slimming World and why it didn't work for her. While she acknowledges that it helps many people, she found that the restrictive nature of the diet negatively impacted her mental health, leading her to realise that a more balanced, sustainable approach was necessary for her well-being. During our conversation, Amy emphasised the importance of mental health in any transformation. She explained that improving her mindset and working on her mental health were crucial steps in her journey toward losing weight and feeling better about herself. Since her weight loss, Amy has achieved incredible things. She ran the London Marathon and is now training for an Ironman event. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and self-belief. It shows that when you commit to yourself and refuse to give up, you can achieve extraordinary results. Jenna shared how she broke free from the cycle of restrictive dieting and discovered a balanced way of living that focuses on strength, nourishment, and self-empowerment. We kicked off the episode with Jenna introducing herself and sharing her background. At 44 years old, she has spent years cycling through various diets, only to find herself stuck in a pattern of weight loss followed by weight gain. Jenna described how these diets often left her feeling restricted, leading to cycles of binge eating and guilt. A pivotal moment for Jenna came when she started following fitness influencers on Instagram, noticing how they nourished their bodies and maintained strong, healthy physiques. Inspired by their approach, Jenna decided to shift her focus from just losing weight to building strength and fueling her body with nutritious foods. She joined a gym and started working with a trainer who provided her with tailored exercise plans and a nutrition guide. Jenna emphasized the importance of setting small, realistic goals and not feeling restricted by diets. Instead of focusing solely on the scale, she began to prioritize how she felt—both mentally and physically. Jenna shared how tracking her calorie intake and hitting her protein goals allowed her to enjoy food without guilt, making her new lifestyle sustainable and enjoyable. One of the most insightful parts of our conversation was Jenna's realization that her confidence grew as she focused more on strength and health rather than just weight loss. This shift in mindset not only helped her achieve her physical goals but also positively impacted other areas of her life. As we wrapped up, Jenna offered advice for anyone starting their weight loss journey: set small goals, avoid restrictions, and find an exercise routine you enjoy. EP116: Angela's Transformation: From Dieting Cycles to Sustainable Health In this episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Angela, a remarkable woman from Birmingham, UK, who has experienced a profound transformation in her health and mindset. Angela shares her journey from a lifetime of dieting and weight loss programs to finally finding a sustainable approach that not only helped her lose weight but also improved her overall health and well-being. The episode begins with Angela introducing herself and reflecting on her lifelong struggle with weight. She described how she has always been overweight, from being a chubby baby to an overweight adult. Growing up in a Caribbean household, Angela developed a deep love for the rich and flavorful foods of her culture, which included a lot of starchy and fried foods. This cultural influence, combined with the constant negative feedback she received about her weight from family, teachers, and the medical profession, led to a complicated relationship with food. Angela shared that she began rebelling with food at a young age, using it as a form of control when she felt powerless in other areas of her life. This behavior continued into adulthood, where she found herself in a cycle of joining various weight loss programs, losing some weight, and then gaining it all back. Despite trying numerous diets and programs over the years, including Weight Watchers, Slimming World, and Keto, Angela's weight continued to increase, and she developed several serious health conditions, including lupus, type 2 diabetes, and fibromyalgia. The turning point for Angela came at Christmas 2019, when she found herself unable to get out of the sofa due to her weight and health issues. Realizing something had to change, she decided to give Weight Watchers one final try in January 2020. While she did lose weight, she found the focus on tracking and the scales to be restrictive and unsustainable. In August 2022, Angela had an epiphany: she realized that her cultural foods were missing from her diet, and the constant tracking was not working for her. She decided to put away the scales and stop obsessing over numbers. Instead, Angela focused on healthy habits, portion control using her hands as a guide, and enjoying her food by cooking whole foods from scratch. This shift in mindset, from focusing on weight loss to improving her health, was transformative. Over time, she lost 130 pounds and improved her overall health, all while enjoying her cultural foods without guilt. Angela emphasized the importance of self-belief, changing the narrative in her head from negative to positive, and learning to trust herself and her body. She now focuses on eating for health rather than just weight loss and has developed a sustainable lifestyle that allows her to enjoy food while maintaining her health. EP 116: Rose's Journey: From Anxiety to Empowerment In this episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rose, an inspiring woman from Toronto, Canada. Rose shares her remarkable journey of weight loss, mental health struggles, and finding balance. She talks about how she overcame severe anxiety and transformed her life through small, consistent changes, ultimately leading to a healthier, happier lifestyle. Rose is a 50-year-old mother of two from Toronto, soon to be celebrating her 20th wedding anniversary. I hear how she has worked with children with special needs and has dedicated herself to living her best life, both mentally and physically. Despite her current positive outlook, Rose's journey was filled with challenges, particularly surrounding her weight and mental health. Rose recounted her early years, highlighting how she was active and healthy as a child but started gaining weight during high school. The attention she received as she developed physically led her to seek comfort in food, and she began to eat more to avoid that attention. This pattern of emotional eating continued into adulthood, leading to cycles of weight loss and gain. A pivotal moment came when Rose's grandmother passed away at 44, prompting Rose to reflect on her own health as she approached that age. Determined to make lasting changes, she realized that weight loss had to be a lifelong commitment rather than a quick fix. This epiphany led her to join a weight loss program and successfully lose weight, although she initially did so through restrictive methods. Rose discussed the severe anxiety she experienced a few years ago, which at one point left her unable to leave the house. With support from her coach, she began taking small steps to manage her anxiety, starting with five-minute walks outside. These walks gradually increased in duration, helping her regain confidence and control over her mental health. She emphasized the importance of small, consistent actions in making significant life changes. We talked about Rose's transition from restrictive eating to a more balanced and sustainable approach. She no longer deprives herself of foods she loves but instead focuses on portion control and making healthier choices. Rose also shared her strategies for maintaining her weight loss, such as meal prepping and incorporating a variety of nutritious foods into her diet. A key highlight of our conversation was Rose's perspective on balance and enjoyment. She shared anecdotes from her travels, where she enjoyed local foods without guilt and managed to stay active. For example, during a trip to Chicago, she allowed herself to indulge in deep-dish pizza and a Gordon Ramsay burger but balanced it with healthy choices and plenty of walking. Rose also spoke about her recent shift from Weight Watchers to calorie counting, finding it more freeing and effective for maintaining her weight. She stressed the importance of viewing the scale as data rather than a measure of success or failure. This mindset shift has been crucial in her continued journey towards health and well-being. In closing, Rose offered valuable advice for listeners: stay consistent, set small, achievable goals, and step out of your comfort zone. She emphasized that the journey to health is lifelong and should be enjoyable, urging listeners not to compare themselves to others but to focus on their unique paths. Many of us set weight loss goals with summer in mind, aiming to look and feel our best for vacations, weddings, and beach outings. However, it's common to face challenges during this time, from holiday indulgences to a lack of routine. I shared personal insights and strategies for navigating these summer challenges without abandoning your goals. It's important to recognise that even if you haven't reached your desired weight or if you've indulged during a holiday, it doesn't mean your journey is over. Instead, it's about maintaining balance and finding ways to enjoy the season while staying on track. A significant part of this episode focused on the concept of Outcome, Processes, and Actions (OPA). This three-step structure helps you create and set realistic goals. Next, I introduced the Warrior Spirit Challenge, an exciting new initiative designed to help listeners get back on track with their weight loss journey. This five-day challenge offers free, one-on-one coaching sessions with me. It's an opportunity to reset, refocus, and address any obstacles or limiting beliefs that might be holding you back. EP113: Priti's path: From secret eater to healthy snack advocate In this episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Priti, a mother from Milton Keynes and the founder of A Little Big Kid, a business dedicated to providing healthy, convenient snacks for children. Priti shared her journey from being a secret snacker to becoming an advocate for healthy eating, particularly for children. Her story is one of personal growth, self-education, and the drive to create positive change in her life and the lives of others. Priti has navigated the complexities of managing her weight and building a healthy relationship with food. Her journey began at a young age when she developed the habit of snacking in secret. Growing up in an environment where snacks were restricted, Priti often found herself hiding in the pantry to satisfy her hunger. As she transitioned into adulthood, Priti's weight fluctuated significantly, ranging from a size 8 to a size 16. This constant yo-yo dieting took a toll on her mental health, leading to peaks of motivation followed by lows of disappointment when the weight returned. It wasn't until she became pregnant with her first child that Priti had a turning point. Determined to provide the best nutrition for her baby, she embarked on a journey of self-education, completing a child nutrition diploma. Through this education, Priti learned about the importance of balanced nutrition and the detrimental effects of restrictive diets. She started to understand the root causes of her unhealthy relationship with food and made significant changes to her approach. This newfound knowledge not only benefited her own health but also inspired her to create A Little Big Kid, a business providing healthy snack boxes for children. Priti explained that her business addresses the gap in the market for convenient, nutritious snacks for kids. The snack boxes are designed to be a healthy alternative to the typical sugary and processed snacks available, offering parents an easy way to ensure their children have access to nutritious options on the go. The boxes are subscription-based and include a variety of snacks, all selected for their nutritional value and suitability for children. Priti emphasised that understanding nutrition and developing a healthy relationship with food are crucial for both children and adults. She shared her insights on the role of parents in guiding their children's eating habits and the challenges they face in a society that often promotes unhealthy food choices. As we wrapped up the episode, Priti shared her advice for listeners: don't be too hard on yourself and seek knowledge and support. She stressed the importance of being kind to oneself and recognizing that change is a gradual process. EP112: Hollie Rose: Resilience, Transformation, and New Beginnings In this latest episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I welcomed back Holli, who shared her incredible weight loss journey and the significant changes she has experienced since her last appearance in April 2023. Hollie, now 33, detailed her struggles with weight from a young age, her battles with emotional eating, and the impact of losing her mother unexpectedly. Her story is one of resilience, transformation, and the pursuit of a healthier, happier life. We began by catching up on what Holly has been up to since her last appearance on the podcast. Hollie shared that she started her weight loss journey just before her 31st birthday, after struggling with her weight throughout her life. Growing up, Hollie was aware of being the "chubby short girl" in a toxic school environment. Her unhealthy relationship with food, marked by emotional and secret eating, contributed to her weight gain. A pivotal moment in Hollie's life was the sudden passing of her mother when Holly was 22. This loss triggered significant emotional turmoil, and Hollie found herself using food as a coping mechanism. Despite completing her teacher training, getting engaged, married, and having a daughter, Hollie hadn't dealt with her grief head-on. The birth of her daughter in 2017 brought her emotional eating and grief to the forefront, leading to a significant weight gain. Hollie reached a breaking point when she was denied affordable life insurance due to her weight, prompting her to take action. She found the One to One diet and decided to give it a try. Starting in June 2022, Hollie followed the plan and lost six stone in six months. The structured nature of the plan helped her take control of her eating habits, providing the mental space she needed to focus on her health. We discussed the misconceptions about the One to One diet, often criticized for the lack of real food and ultra low calories. Hollie explained that the plan offers various steps, from total meal replacements to incorporating conventional food, and emphasizes the importance of finding a consultant who understands your journey. The personalized support and gradual reintroduction of food helped Hollie develop a healthier relationship with eating and maintain her weight loss. Hollie also shared her recent experience with skin removal surgery, which she decided to undergo to fully appreciate the results of her hard work. The surgery, which included a tummy tuck, muscle repair, liposuction, and a breast reduction and lift, was a significant step in her journey towards body confidence and acceptance. Hollie emphasized that this decision was personal and about reaping the rewards of her weight loss. One of the highlights of our conversation was Hollie's recognition in the One to One annual awards. She and her consultant Rachel were the only virtual pair shortlisted for the award, highlighting the strong relationship they built despite not meeting face-to-face. Hollie's success and the support she received from Rachel were pivotal in her journey, and winning the award was a testament to their dedication and hard work. As we wrapped up the episode, Holly reflected on the impact of her journey on her daughter and the importance of setting a positive example. She shared a heartwarming story about a client who lost weight under her guidance and was able to conceive naturally after being told to lose weight for fertility treatment. This success story was a beautiful testament to the life-changing impact Hollie has had on others. EP111: Louie's Limitless Journey In this episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I had the pleasure of talking with Louie, also known as Limitless Louie, about his inspiring journey. Louie, originally from Tasmania, Australia, has been living in the UK for nearly 20 years. His story is one of resilience, transformation, and self-discovery. We explored his journey from struggling with weight to finding a healthier, happier version of himself, while also delving into the deeper aspects of self-acceptance and mental health. We talk about his struggles with weight from a young age. He was always the "chubby kid" and faced challenges that many can relate to, such as not wanting to take his shirt off in public or participate in activities that might draw attention to his weight. A pivotal moment in Louie's journey was when he purchased a pair of expensive trousers from a brand called Dante. Unable to fit into them, he was determined to change his lifestyle. This led him to a period of intense fitness and strict dieting, which, although effective in terms of weight loss, became an unhealthy obsession. He realised that being thin did not equate to being happy and that his mental and physical health were suffering. Four years ago, Louie made significant changes by leaving an unfulfilling job and pursuing a career in nursing, which he finds deeply rewarding. He emphasised the importance of helping others and how this has become a central part of his life and his journey towards self-improvement. Louie shared his approach to weight loss now, which is more balanced and sustainable. He no longer focuses on the numbers on the scale but rather on how he feels and how his body functions. One of the highlights of our conversation was Louie's insight into mental health and the importance of self-acceptance. He discussed how he manages his mental health by recognizing and allowing himself to have bad days, but not letting those days define him. His advice to others struggling with weight or mental health issues was heartfelt and practical: find what works for you, enjoy the process, and don't let negative thoughts take over. If you don't already follow Louie on Instagram, his account is full of inspiriation and a lot of funny content. EP110: Jonathan's Ongoing Transformation: More Than Just Weight Loss In this latest episode of the Weight Loss Warrior podcast, I welcome back Jonathan "Half the Man," who previously shared his incredible weight loss journey. Jonathan joined us again to provide updates on his progress and the challenges he's faced since his last appearance. We kicked off the episode by catching up on what Jonathan has been up to since we last spoke in September. Jonathan, who started his weight loss journey at 40 stone, has now reached an impressive 16.5 stone. He recounted his initial steps toward weight loss, starting in January 2021, and how an accidental message to a coach led to life-changing support and guidance. Jonathan's journey hasn't been linear, and he openly discussed the ups and downs he has faced. One significant milestone was his public speaking event, where he emotionally shared his story in front of an audience, realising the immense progress he had made. This moment of recognition and support was both overwhelming and affirming for him. A major topic of our conversation was Jonathan's recent surgery to remove excess skin, a common issue for those who have lost a significant amount of weight. He described the 360 surgery procedure, which involved removing skin from both his front and back, and the physical and mental challenges of recovery. Despite the difficulties, Jonathan has maintained his weight and is steadily regaining his strength and fitness. Jonathan shared his strategies for maintaining weight loss, emphasizing the importance of consistency and realistic goal setting. He detailed his approach to dieting, balancing strict weekdays with more flexible weekends, and how this sustainable method has helped him stay on track. We also discussed the common pitfalls of weight loss journeys, such as the pressure to be perfect and the unrealistic expectations set by social media. One of the most insightful parts of our conversation was Jonathan's perspective on having bad days. He stressed the importance of accepting that bad days will happen and the key is to get back on track the next day without dwelling on mistakes. This mindset has been crucial in his continued success. As we wrapped up the episode, Jonathan talked about his next goal: preparing for a photoshoot to showcase his transformation. This goal isn't just for himself but to inspire others by demonstrating what is possible with dedication and hard work. Special thanks to Jonathan for joining me again, he is a lovely bloke and I really appreciate his insight, jokes and attitude towards helping others to succeed. Nick shared his compelling weight loss journey, his battles with mental health, and how he transformed his life to become an inspiration to others. We began the episode with a warm welcome to Nick, where he shared some insights into his busy life in Blackpool. Balancing responsibilities as a PT, a duty manager at a gym, and a parent, Nick's story is one of determination and resilience. He opened up about his early life, growing up as the "chubby kid," and how his teenage years marked a significant change when sports helped him manage his weight. However, the transition to university life and a sedentary job led to weight gain and a growing dissatisfaction with his physical health. A pivotal moment in Nick's journey was the birth of his daughter, which led to his diagnosis of postnatal depression. This diagnosis had a profound impact on his mental health and motivated him to change his lifestyle for the sake of his family. Nick detailed his approach to weight loss, which included calorie counting, home workouts, and the Couch to 5K program, even though he disliked running. He highlighted the challenges of balancing these efforts with the demands of family life and work. We delved deep into the connection between mental health and physical health. Nick stressed the importance of addressing mental health alongside physical health and shared his struggles with body dysmorphia. He explained how losing weight alone didn't resolve his self-image issues and emphasized the need for a holistic approach to well-being. Nick's career transition to personal training was another significant aspect of our conversation. From being a retail team leader to pursuing a career in personal training, Nick's journey was fueled by the support of his partner and his passion for helping others achieve their fitness goals. He shared valuable advice on making healthier food choices, the importance of moderation, and setting realistic expectations. Nick underscored that weight loss is a gradual process and encouraged listeners to focus on their mental well-being as part of their fitness journey. EP104: The impact of changing your mindset - Gen's Journey as a coaching client I am really excited to share this with you Warrior Tribe and hope you find it helpful. My special guest today is Gen who recently completed a 12 week coaching program with me and was happy to share her experience with you all. We dive into the challenges that Gen had faced which like so many of us involved years of struggling with being overweight and dieting. When Gen and I began speaking her goals were clear however her habits, reliance on motivation and past experience created a difficult environment for the ultimate objective to be reached. This episode is important for me to share because I feel there are so many people who listen to the show and experience the same struggle as Gen explains, not making any meaningful changes between attempts, hoping for a different outcome and having to manage the feeling of failure when things don't work out. I say that with compassion as someone who spent years going through the same cycle until learning the benefits of focusing on mindset. Gen shares how coaching has allowed her to approach weight loss from a different angle, focusing on the behaviours and thinking in a different way with regards to being on a diet. We talk about how there is so much emphasis and pressure attached to whether the scale goes up or down, placing our judgement and self worth on this single factor whereas the truth is there is so much more you can measure in order to be successful. One key difference is that Gen now lives with a level of confidence and self-esteem that has increased dramatically since we began working together. You can hear in her voice that there is no longer the fear to experience social events or dinners out like before, and her excitement for the journey she on can offer encouragement to anyone else wanting the same. She emphasises the importance of finding a sustainable lifestyle and enjoying the foods you love while making healthier choices. I hear how Ro is now training for the Great North Run and continues to embrace a healthy and fit lifestyle, pursuing her goal to lose another stone and take her total to 6.
