In this episode Vicki Atkinson and Wynne Leon are talking with author, blogger, and former newspaper writer, Melanie McGauran about decoding our dreams. This is such a fascinating episode. The interior of our minds is an interesting, and sometimes scary, place. But it is so fun how Melanie brings her love of mysteries to this practice of sifting through the clues. Melanie talks about her fascination with dreams and how she both remembers hers and extends them. It's a wonderful practice to not only appreciate the dreamscape but also focus the mind in the middle of the night. She introduces us to the work of Matthew Walker, author of Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams and his insight that in dreaming, we access our memory tree but without the guardrails of logic. Melanie combines that memory mixology with her unstoppable creativity, joy and problem-solving to decode dreams. This episode is such a fun take on dreaming, writing and creativity. We love Melanie's passion and interest and get to see that in action as she helps us make stories from our dreams. I'm confident you'll love the scenic and beautiful places we explore as we share the power of storytelling – in podcasts, in conversation, and in dreams. We know you'll love it! Today, I have the honor of connecting with Dr. Robynne Chutkan, one of the most recognizable gastroenterologists in the United States. She is also the author of Anti-Viral Gut, one of the books I enjoyed reading most in 2022! Knowledge of the microbiome dates back to the 1600s when Anthony van Leeuwenhoek observed bacteria in his dental plaque through a microscope. However, it has taken us several centuries to understand the interdependence and beneficial nature of those bacteria. The terms "microbiome" and "microbiota" are often used interchangeably. They refer to the organisms and genes that live in and on our bodies, predominantly in the GI tract. Those organisms include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, parasites, and archaea, which, despite their microscopic size, collectively weigh around four to five pounds.  Today, Dr. Chutkan and I dive deep into the physiology of the microbiome and discuss how that interplays with immunology. We discuss the benefits of hydrochloric acid, the impact of proton pump inhibitors and other medications on the health of the gut microbiome, and the role of dysbiosis and the Estrobolome. We get into how the pharmaceutical industry has influenced both medical practice and the outlook of healthcare providers, and we talk about the impact of sleep, exercise, stress, and alcohol on the gut. Dr. Chutkan also shares top tips from her anti-viral diet book on the best ways to support the gut. (One of her tips is to consume 30 plant types per week for a healthier gut microbiome.)  This show has been one of my favorite podcasts I have recorded in the last year. I hope you enjoy listening to it! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: What is the microbiome, and why is it important? Why do we need to understand the interrelationship between the oral microbiome, the gut microbiome, and the vaginal microbiome? The importance of stomach acid. How do proton pump inhibitors affect gut health? The three big things that interfere with digestion. How pharmaceutical companies have taken over medical education. The role of statins in women. The importance of the Estrobolome test. The three different types of estrogens in the body. Why exercise is an important contributor to gut health. The net impact of low-quality sleep on immune function. Dr. Chutkan shares her top tips for a healthy gut microbiome. Sleep is the resting state that nature has chosen for us by default. Long overlooked or even neglected, it is one of the keys to good health, alongside nutrition, physical exercise, and mental and emotional health. Moreover, it is an excellent indicator of our overall health: when our sleep is disturbed, it usually means at least one of these four components is affected. It thus seems essential to be able to measure the quality of our sleep while minimizing the interaction or invasiveness of the measurement method with our body. And that is precisely the promise of Soumya Dash and his company Sleepiz! Based on radar technology, this Swiss startup has developed a compact device to place on a bedside table, capable of remotely clinically measuring sleep and detecting potential disorders such as sleep apnea or insomnia. No electroencephalogram to wear on the head, no pulse oximeter on the finger, nor any wearable around the wrist: everything is measured from the bedside table and without any direct interaction with the subject measured. In this surprising episode, we dive into the fascinating world of sleep, a realm with many secrets still to be uncovered! Soumya shares with us insights into the technology his team has developed, the difference between consumer-grade and medical-grade sleep monitors, and a glimpse into the future of healthcare in this field! Do you ever feel like you're running on empty, burdened with the societal pressure to be ceaselessly productive? We explore the tangled web of burnout, its impact on mental health, and how our attitudes and systems of work lead to this common state of exhaustion. Just because burnout is common does not mean it is normal and I've asked Accountant Misa Bacon and HR Consultant Candice Elliott to bring their invaluable insights and personal experiences to the table. In this episode, we dive into the intriguing connection between burnout and how this pattern relates to the water element and winter season. We examine the history of work to unpack why we are influenced to be relentlessly productive and highlight how honoring natural cycles, like winter's call for rest, is the medicine we all need and crave. What if you could shape the future of your business exactly as you desire? Imagine having clarity on what you truly want from your business and envisioning its trajectory even after you leave. Would you choose to maintain it as a thriving financial asset, allowing you to bask in the sun at the beach while escaping the daily grind? Or perhaps you adore the day-to-day operations but crave the freedom of being financially secure. If you find yourself unsure about how to navigate forward or explore the exit options available to you, then this podcast episode is an absolute must-listen. Your future awaits, and the only thing missing is your decision on what that future looks like. Every business owner has their own hopes and dreams of the future, which is why Ryan Tansom, founder of Arkona, built his company. He helps business owners “Get clear on what they want their leadership role to be, and how they want it to evolve on the way toward your target equity valuation.” Once that is nailed down, business owners can “Clarify a target equity valuation they want at a point in the future as well as the income they want along the way.” When Ryan is involved in the Intentional Growth plan, it will “Save money and reduce conflict with any stakeholders (partners, investors, family members) by getting alignment on your long-term goals.” So why wait, let's start planning your future.  Your future awaits, and the power to shape it lies within your hands. As a business owner, you hold unique hopes and dreams for what lies ahead. Understanding this, Ryan Tansom, the visionary founder of Arkona, established his company to guide entrepreneurs like you. His mission is to empower business owners to gain clarity on their desired leadership roles and envision the evolution toward their target equity valuation. By working with Ryan and embracing the Intentional Growth plan, you can embark on a transformative journey. First, you will define the precise nature of your leadership role and chart its evolution in alignment with your objectives. Simultaneously, you will determine a target equity valuation for the future, as well as the income milestones you wish to achieve along the way. This strategic clarity not only paves the path to your desired financial outcomes but also serves as a catalyst for savings and minimizes conflicts with critical stakeholders such as partners, investors, and family members. Through the Intentional Growth Framework, you can forge alignment on your long-term goals, fostering a harmonious and prosperous business ecosystem. Why wait any longer? The time has come to embark on this transformative journey and shape the future you envision for your business. We're revisiting our How to Thrive series co-hosted with positive psychotherapist Marie McLeod for Mental Health Month. This series initially went live in late 2021 - almost 12 months ago - while How to Thrive, the documentary, was still in production. It is now out in the world and showing in cinemas all over the country. "A good night's sleep starts the moment we wake up." We're almost at the end of Season 11 with 2 more episodes left. Today, we're back with our second to the last episode of our new weekly podcast series "How To Thrive", a collaboration with positive psychology coach Marie McLeod. We're exploring the last beam of the BEACON model; a model of thriving that Marie has developed to guide us through the simple steps to thriving and flourishing in life. In this episode, we talk about Nurture - the one and only beam of the BEACON model that is about our physical health and how it interplays with our mental health. Nurture focuses on four aspects: eating, moving, sleeping, and being mindful. All of which revolve around, energy. Marie and I talk about: Why maintaining energy is important in helping people thrive A handy acronym to help us remember how to keep our energy levels sustained Why do we need sleep How important is sleep for productivity, performance, and mental health How sleep deprivation impacts cognitive abilities and emotional regulation What is sleep hygiene and why we need to think about it Factors that affect our sleep and some practical tips to improve our sleep quality Your quest for the week: Nurture yourself by making improvements to your sleep quality. You can check out the cheat sheet to "Seven Steps to Splendid Sleep" in Marie's website or any of the resources listed above for tips on how to improve your sleep hygiene. Lack of sleep can affect multiple facets in both our physical and mental health. Studies have linked sleep deprivation to weight gain, chemical imbalances, thinking of food as a reward, and slower mental processes. It has been proven over and over that getting better rest is integral to lowering stress and increasing our ability to function in optimum health. But how do we actually achieve better sleep? Having struggled to get adequate sleep myself, this topic touches me personally. I've researched and worked to improve my own rest, and learned a lot of information, tips and ideas revolving around sleep. In this episode, I share them with you, including several physiological factors. I discuss ideas and tips for changing our thought processes around rest, correcting mistakes we might be making regarding sleep, and implementing ways to increase our restorative sleep. I hope the information I share helps each of you sleep more and function better. “Without enough sleep, we tend to be more irritable and our brains just don't function as well… We make more mistakes, things take longer to do and we are just not as bright and as capable as we can be. However, even though we know all that, most of us continue not to get enough sleep.” – Dr. Sara Dill What You'll LearnSleep linked to various diseases, especially obesity Overeating and sleep deprivation Listening to your body Signs you're not getting enough sleep How to get more rest Changing how you think about sleep Mistakes we make regarding rest Ideas and tips for improving sleep Contact Info and Recommended ResourcesBook: https://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Sleep-Unlocking-Dreams/dp/1501144316 (Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams) by Matthew Walker, PhD Oura Ring:  https://ouraring.com/ (ouraring.com)  Podcast Episodes:https://www.saradill.com/blog/e26 (How to Beat Burnout) https://www.saradill.com/blog/e25 (How to Drop Your Manual) https://www.saradill.com/blog/e18 (Thought Work: The Most Important Work You Can Ever Do) https://www.saradill.com/blog/e3 (Believing New Things) Connect with Sara Dill, MD, The Doctor's CoachWebsite: https://www.saradill.com/ (saradill.com) Work with me: https://www.saradill.com/coaching (saradill.com/coaching) It's not too late to join my Physicians Only Small Coaching Group! Professor Jeremi Duru, a nationally recognized sports law expert, joins us this week to talk about a baseball-related U.S. Supreme Court case, Flood v. Kuhn, decided 50 years ago this week (June 19, 1972, to be exact). The case sparked the movement that birthed the free agency era in baseball and sports.Curt Flood was an All-Star and Gold Glove center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals during their 1960's heyday. The Cardinals won 2 World Series titles, in 1964 and 1967, and Flood played a big role for both teams. After the 1969 season though, the Cardinals traded Flood to the Philadelphia Phillies. Flood protested the trade and ultimately sued Major League Baseball -- a lawsuit that cost Flood his career.Professor Duru leads us through the background, Flood's career, the lawsuit and the aftermath, ultimately reminding us that Curt Flood deserves to be remembered today as an excellent baseball player as well as a trailblazer for athlete's rights. Sleep is the foundation upon which other pillars of health stand. That's according to Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology and Director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of the international bestseller Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams. Walker's growing body of data suggests that 7 to 9 hours of good sleep every night is important for effective immune function, regulating metabolism, controlling glucose and the mechanisms for appetite and weight gain. Lack of sleep is also a risk factor for illness from minor colds to serious diseases such as cancer and Alzheimers. Says Walker, “the biggest misconception is that our bodies are dormant during sleep and this couldn't be further from the truth.” During sleep, our body undergoes a remarkable overhaul of all of its physiological systems—cardiovascular, immune, metabolic, hormonal, and in the brain. Walker's research shows that deep sleep is when our bodies sewage cleansing system kicks into high gear. Our brain literally washes away all of the metabolic byproducts that build up when we're awake. This is a particularly important function as it relates to dementia and Alzheimers Disease. Our heart rates slow down with more benefits than any blood pressure medication could ever offer. Sleep also stimulates many immune factors that help fight off infections. In addition, deep sleep is when our brain processes information and commits it to long term memory. It can also contribute to good mental health and creativity. Thus, all night cramming for a test or brainstrorming for a presentation won't serve you as well as a good night's sleep. All of this begs the question—how do we get a good night's sleep in our non-stop demanding lives? Aside from more complex sleep disorders, Dr. Walker says there are several simple steps for ensuring sleep. These include a regular sleep schedule, a dark and cool room without our devices, stopping caffeine intake after midday, and staying away from alcohol. Alcohol induces sedation but causes fragmented sleep. Furthermore, if you're having trouble falling asleep, Dr. Walker suggests getting up for a short while and then returning to bed. With so much at stake, why aren't we prioritizing sleep more? Says Walker, “Sleep is the neglected stepsister in the health conversation of today but getting sleep tonight is literally an investment in tomorrow. Sleep is probably mother nature's best effort yet at immortality.”

“We really have to have a horrible relationship with ourselves if we're going to poison ourselves every single day.”-Dr. Bryan BorlandDr. Rob Graessle grew up in Columbus, OH in a blue collar neighborhood called Hilltop where few people went to college. Like many blue collar neighborhoods around America, Hilltop and adjacent Franklinton have been ravished by the opioid epidemic. Rob was a first generation college student and one of the few who made it out of his neighborhood and went on to college where he eventually went to medical school, trained in emergency medicine, and returned to his hometown.Rob worked at Grant Medical Center, Columbus' busiest Level-1 trauma center, for the last 10 years. Just over a year ago, he began working on a project to give back to his childhood neighborhood and help with the opioid epidemic. Out of a vision he had, Basecamp Recovery Center was born. On August 3rd, 2020, Rob along with Dr. Bryan Borland, opened their doors, began seeing patients, and helping those struggling with substance use disorder.Join The Mosaic Life Circle to be the first to hear about new episode releases, exclusive Instagram content, and brand new merchandise deals!Suffering from Addiction?
