S2 E20; We talk SmackDown including Mandy and Otis' day at the pool, Wills and Should for NXT Takeover In Your House, and more.
The day of reckoning has come for Thomas--with his crew more restive than ever, Captain Crowe will need to make sure his punishment satisfies Pierre Le Grande without upsetting the balance aboard the Caliban. Tarquin begins to get his finger on the friction below decks, and between George's frustration over Sorrowful's promised payday and Otis' fear of black magic there's plenty of complaints. With Hatteras approaching, the Carribean draws closer--this could be the point of no return...

Some won't admit it but Becky Lynch being away from WWE, and off TV is the best decision for the overall health of the WWE Women's Division, the product in general, the women's roster, who could not ever get an opportunity because of constantly being held back, and believe it or not for Becky Lynch. Also, on this episode of Off The Script, major news and notes that came out of WWE Money In The Bank, why Vince McMahon's office was not "trashed" during the match, why the overall PPV was as short as it was, and why the MITB ladder match was not the only match taped during Sunday's show. Major update on Summerslam 2020, plans for Otis' "cash-in" and it reportedly will not be for the Universal Championship, the WWE Intercontinental Championship has been vacated, with a tournament to start on WWE SmackDown but why is there all of a sudden a need, and desire for the title on SmackDown now, and why Sami Zayn believe it or not, has been punished. Everything you need to know on Becky Lynch being pregnant, when she found out, when she is "due", is there "heat" on Seth Rollins, did she wrestle Shayna Baszler at Wrestlemania 36 while pregnant, why Asuka won MITB and was awarded the Raw Women's Championship, what WWE could have done to make the overall title situation much better, and how it devalues the Money In The Bank briefcase, and how WWE books Becky Lynch upon her eventually return. This week we check out Rob Zombie's latest movie "3 From Hell". Check out my review of the rest of his offerings in episode 14. "3 From Hell" is the third movie to feature the murderous Firefly clan. The first is 2003's "House Of 1000 Corpses" followed by 2005's "The Devils Rejects". The original trio included: Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), Otis (Bill Moseley) and Baby (Sherri Moon Zombie). Unfortunately Haig becomes very ill and passes away shortly after the movie was released. He was able to do a few scenes but was replaced by Otis' half brother Winslow Foxworth "Foxy" Coltrane. And since the gang fled to Durango, I've included a few foods popular there and in Northern Mexico in general. Check them out at thespruceeats.com here Photo Credit: Here

Stand up comedian Nish Kumar was booed off stage at a charity gig for The Lord's Taverners. How do comedians cope when the audience disagrees with their political stance or just takes against them? Honey Boy is a new film written by Shia LaBeouf, a largely autobiographical story of an actor in rehab who, in an attempt to cure his PTSD, revisits memories of his abusive childhood. Jumping between present day and 1995, LaBeouf plays a version of his own father, a recovering alcoholic, sharing a motel room with son and child star 'Otis' whilst filming for children’s television nearby. Documentary filmmaker and film critic Charlie Lyne gives us his verdict. There's a heated debate in film circles at the moment. As cinema companies and Netflix clash over the distribution of Martin Scorsese’s epic mob drama The Irishman, how vital is it that it should it be seen on the big screen vs streaming on Netflix? The streaming service has a policy of restricting the amount of time its films are shown on actual cinema screens. We ask whether going to the cinema may eventually become an elite pursuit. Sri Lankan author Romesh Gunesekera discusses his new novel Suncatcher. It’s set in the country of his birth in 1964 when national political turbulence seems to echo the emotional turmoil experienced by the central character, Kairo, a boy on the cusp of adolescence attempting to make sense of the world around him. The debating duo delve into The Dilemma (2011), starring Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, and Jennifer Connelly. Otis gets a mic and is put to work, not fact checking though. Of course not. He’s literally just hanging out. Alejandro is infuriated by the fact that he’s not Otis’s funniest friend and is even more upset knowing that the guy who is Otis' funniest friend is actually funnier than Alejandro. The boys also get into the topic of “what would you do if you saw your best friend’s significant other cheating on them?” Christian hates the Queen of Rap. Let it be known that Otis and Alejandro DO NOT share that view.
Summer break is over, and The Basement Boys are back. And they've brought genre icon Bill Moseley with them! Jay sat down to discuss Bill's return to arguably one of his most iconic roles; Otis Firefly from Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. And you can see Bill as Otis once again when 3 From Hell opens on Sept 16. Bill discusses how Zombie brought the Firefly clan back for one more killing spree, what it was like getting into Otis' mindset after a 14-year break, and why these films and characters endure. Bill is a class act with a great sense of humour, and he and Jay had a great 12-minute conversation. So yeah, ya'll need to hear this one! And Jason and Shaw get into 3 From Hell as well. Yup, they've seen this bad boy, and sound off on it in a feature discussion. NOT a review, as those don't come out until next week. But they have a few words to say about it. Shawn also gets political again about some other stuff, and uses words like oligopoly. Be patient with him. He was tired when this was recorded. So grab your favourite brew, and push play on the player below. This is a Friday the 13th gift From The Basement! Stick with us!
“Blues Unlimited: The Complete Radio Show Transcripts, Volume 3” was the #2 new release at Amazon for Music Reference and was a top ten new release in Music History & Criticism this past weekend! Now available in the Amazon Kindle Store at https://tinyurl.com/y4pwwr2f and from Barnes & Noble at https://tinyurl.com/y64jdbrp While the name Johnny Otis is certainly synonymous with West Coast R&B, and borders on what many people would call a household name, his one-time guitar player, Pete Lewis, is a virtual unknown whose life is shrouded in mystery. Apparently, Johnny Otis "discovered" Pete Lewis at his Barrelhouse Club, in 1947, during one of the regular Thursday night talent shows. He went on to hire Lewis to be a part of his band, in what would mark an almost ten year relationship. Legend has it that Lewis came to California by way of his birthplace, now thought to be Oklahoma City, in the year 1913 (previously it was thought to be Louisiana, which we now know to be in error). What Pete Lewis did prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, was that he was a guitar player like no other. A disciple of T-Bone Walker, he took the electric guitar to new heights, offering sophisticated turns of phrase that bordered on jazz-inflected, to low-down gut bucket riffs that were unceremoniously wrenched out of his instrument — sometimes, all in the same song, or if need be, in the short space of a twelve-bar solo. His playing is at once, crisp, precise, and gritty — not to mention endlessly inventive — the perfect compliment to Otis' rocking big band. From what we can gather, Lewis must have been something of a character. One anecdote, related in the book “Midnight at the Barrelhouse,” is that during a time of incessant touring, he arbitrarily one day decided to stop talking to his boss, Johnny Otis. After about a year had passed, he suddenly resumed talking to him, as if nothing had ever happened. One member of the Otis band — a legend in his own right, tenor sax icon Ben Webster — admired Pete's playing, and the story goes that the two of them roomed together while out on the road (Be sure to listen for a couple of inspired duets between the two of them near the end of the first hour). Although reports vary to the exact date, sometime around 1956, Johnny Otis and Pete Lewis parted company for good. Rumor has it that it was Lewis' problems with alcohol that lead to Otis seeking a replacement, which he found with yet another young and inspired talent, Jimmy Nolen. Thanks to cracker-jack research detective Rob Ford, we happen to know that Pete Lewis was still playing guitar in the clubs of Los Angeles as late as 1962. After that, details start to get murky. According Johnny Otis, the last time he saw Pete Lewis, it was shortly after the L.A. riots of 1966. In the intervening years since he’d last seen him, Lewis had become a wino, apparently living on the streets. Lewis died a short time later, in 1970, at the age of 57. A sad and ironic end to a man whose guitar playing took no prisoners, and had few equals. Photo of Pete "Guitar" Lewis courtesy of Ace Records/Johnny Otis Collection. The Album: Otis Redding The Very Best of Otis Redding (1992) Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart is the son of a record producer and session player who blessed him with the gift of The Very Best of Otis Redding, the 1992 compilation of sixteen of the best songs from the late Otis Redding's catalogue. His father gave him instructions for listening - the charge to learn all about feel. We talked about the nuances of jabs and riffs and Otis Redding's pathos, his restraint, Otis' use of "uncool words" his penchant for the word "lovely", and his wonderfully nuanced cover of the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction". We discussed the sound Memphis music - Stax/Volt, the musicianship, the organic country friend soul sound of the label, and how that sound benefitted Otis Redding. What Jamie Stewart learned most from Otis Redding was awareness, how beats affect emotion, awareness of feel and how rhythm and emotion impact singing. It was a great conversation about a career and a life interrupted. Xiu Xiu's newest album Girl with Basket of Fruit, releases 02/08/2019 via Polyvinyl. As a companion piece to Rock N Roll Archaeology EP13: Hard to Handle, Shelley and Christian discuss this all too-short of the life story of Otis Redding, written by Scott Freeman. Scott gives his take on Otis' life coming from Macon Georgia, the same town where Little Richard and James Brown were born. Otis grew up on the streets. His father was preacher and had been a sharecropper. They lived in tough neighborhoods until Otis got money. Otis loved to be around his family and friends from home, although towards the end his life got very hectic and ended tragically. Published by St. Martin's Press - December 11, 2001.
