It was their first day in battle and the two best friends had just switched places. Bob Fordyce rested while Frank Hartzell crawled down into the shallow foxhole, taking his turn chipping away at the frozen ground. Just then, German artillery fire began falling all around them. With his body plastered to the ground, Hartzell could feel shrapnel dent his helmet. When the explosions finished, he picked himself up to find that his best friend had just been killed in the blur of combat. “When you're actually in it, it's very chaotic,” Hartzell said. The following day, New Year's Day 1945, Hartzell batted Nazi soldiers for control of the Belgian town of Chenogne. In the aftermath, American soldiers gunned down dozens of unarmed German prisoners of war in a field, a clear violation of the Geneva Convention. “I remember we had been given orders, take no prisoners,” Hartzell said. “When I walked past the field on the left, there were these dead bodies. I knew what they were. I knew they were dead Germans.” News of the massacre reached General George S. Patton, but no investigation followed. This week on Reveal, reporter Chris Harland-Dunaway investigates why the soldiers who committed the massacre at Chenogne were never held accountable. This is an update of an episode that originally aired in July 2018.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/weekly Instagram

In true DJ form, Snakes brings four rare/abstract vinyl singles to Electric Kitsch for a conversation about the DIY punk scene of his adolescence, the intersection of skateboarding and hip-hop, dusty independent soul holy grail 45s, proto-drumless rap from Wu's G.O.A.T. (arguably), and an unlikely emcee whose appeal is seemingly without boundaries. As always, an eclectic custom mixtape is curated and included on the back end. Lickers gonna lick. Join the fun! On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Jimmy from Alcatrazz. Pipeman expresses his admiration for the band's music and the fact that they have stayed true to their style over the years. Jimmy shares that despite the passage of time, he continues to make music and work with people he enjoys collaborating with. Their recent records draw heavily from their album "No Parole from Rock and Roll," and Jimmy and the band have been touring extensively. Pipeman notes that Alcatrazz is one of the few bands that release music as frequently as they did back in the day, putting out one album a year instead of waiting for five or eight years between releases. Jimmy explains that touring is the only thing that slows them down from recording, but they love touring and have a fair amount of it coming up this year. Jimmy goes on to explain that while touring can be fun, it can also be challenging. Nevertheless, he enjoys it, and they are all looking forward to rehearsing and putting down tracks in the next few months. Pipeman compliments the band on their resilience and their ability to keep making music that resonates with their fans. Today's guest is one of the most stylish women I know, but I also know that she won't mind me saying, it wasn't always that way. Now Fashion Director of The Times, I first met Anna Murphy when we were both regular stalwarts of the second row at the biannual ready to wear fashion shows. She was then editor of the Telegraph magazine Stella and I was editor of Red, both magazines deemed not quite fashion enough by the fashion industry. I certainly dressed not to be seen, I think it would be fair to say the same of her. Oh how things change.Somewhere between 41 and 51 Anna went from anonymously chic editor to colourful fashion industry doyenne with cascading grey curls and a wardrobe that manages to be both outré (there's a fashion word for you) AND wearable. You go quietly into middle age if you want to, but she's not having any of it.Anna joined me in a brief pause between Paris shows to talk about her take-no-prisoners approach to ageing, how going grey was the most visible thing she's ever done and how she learnt to dress to match. She also shared her philosophy of “why not try it”, her one-word-trick to sorting your midlife personal style and why she wouldn't have surgery if you paid her. Oh, and the lifechanging power of yoga!* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Destination Fabulous by Anna Murphy and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.Find out more about: Living Proof hair products; Boucleme's hair towel; and the Hayou method.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please consider joining The Shift community. An abiding law of the universe is this: You are a slave to that which you obey, and you obey that which you desire. This is why loving Jesus is synonymous with obedience (John 15), and why Paul so often refers to himself as a bondservant. But say you break beyond the fence line of obedience; you are not then "free" from the constraints of His commands—you're enslaved within the territory of disobedience. In this week's passage, Paul addresses one way we jump the fence: by giving our minds back to "weak and worthless elementary principles of the world." Abiding within the fences of Jesus' commands is THE BETTER FREEDOM. Join Jeff & Steph for a meditative conversation on Galatians 4:8-9 in this week's episode of our long walk through the book of Galatians.

Welcome to the weekly expression lesson episode here on the Aussie English podcast! In today's episode, I am going to teach you about the English expression “take no prisoners”. I will give you a breakdown of the meaning of the words in the expression and its full meaning. There will also be examples given so you'll know how to use the expression. Plus, you will learn the grisly origin of this expression! I will also answer a question from an IG follower who asks about how one should pronounce the words “weather” and “whether”.  We will practice saying the expression “take no prisoners” and don't forget to have something to write on as you try to catch what was said in this clip from the Australian drama/comedy movie The Castle. Faced with the prospect of an untimely death, 25-year-old Mary Lambert Swale drew up an unusually specific last will and testament. The daughter of the wealthy English family, Swale anonymously bequeathed to the Anglican Church of Toronto 5000 sterling, an astronomical sum in 1845, to erect a new church. This gift came with stipulations, however. The building must be constructed in the Gothic Style in a cruciform structure. The congregation must be named Church of the Holy Trinity. And, most importantly, that all people be welcome in the church and that its pews be “free and unappropriated forever.” This was a radical request as a common practice among Anglican churches of the time was charging pew reservations as a way to allow the more affluent to worship undisturbed by the pathetic prayer riff-raff. The Church of the Holy Trinity was dedicated in October 1847 and its doors have ever more been open to all.It is fitting that this deference to the past, insistence on beauty, and the requirement for openness would be built into a church that 140 years later would play host to a recording session that would make the environment a critical aspect of its music. The Cowboy Junkies would hole up in the Trinity Church and quietly play their haunting Shoegaze Americana into a single microphone nestled in the midst of the five-story Cathedral. The hushed beauty that was committed to tape in that sacred place on the “The Trinity Session” is a commentary against the increasingly digital and frantic world surrounding them.  If you'd like to hear why Lou Reed's "Take No Prisoners" is our favorite live album of all-time, listen to the Love That Album Podcast.Highway Hi-Fi is a proud member of the Pantheon Music Podcast Network - Home of the Finest Music Podcasts
