There has been a steady rise in autoimmune disease throughout industrialised societies over the last 30 years. Almost 4.5% of the world's population is affected by one of more than 80 different autoimmune diseases. To add to these already alarming statistics, recent studies have revealed that the incidence of autoimmune diseases worldwide is increasing at a rate of 19% per year. While we know that numerous predisposing genetic risk factors have been identified, these only account for a fraction of the overall incidence of autoimmune diseases. There are studies pointing to a strong influence of environmental and lifestyle factors, but translating this into a meaningful therapeutic model is a challenge, especially under the current, prevailing medical paradigm.Nevertheless, there are those who have pioneered this field of research and, through their personal and professional endeavours, have made it all but impossible to ignore how profound an impact diet, lifestyle and mindset can have when faced with seemingly intractable conditions.Dr Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. In 2000, she was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis and from that point, began to steadily decline. Because of her academic medical training, Terry began a research journey that eventually led her to investigate these under-explored factors and from this she developed a treatment plan that would help restore her health. Today, Dr Terry Wahls is a teacher and mentor to millions of people around the world who are seeking more effective ways to treat multiple sclerosis and other progressive health problems. Her story is truly inspirational and we are so fortunate to have Terry share this on the IMH Patient Journeys podcast. References:Jamka M, et.al. Do you need to eat three meals a day? Does eating more, smaller meals speed up your metabolism? Is breakfast the most important meal of the day? The answer to all of these questions is a big fat no. And I’ve got into tons of arguments about this, but stick around and you’ll know why I’m correct. So, on this podcast we discuss paleolithic living, paleolithic eating, paleolithic exercise as well as intermittent fasting. The Paleolithic Diet or Paleo is pretty straight forward.  If a caveman didn't eat it, neither should you. When you follow the Paleo Diet, you can eat anything you could hunt or gather way back in the day – things like meat, fish, nuts, leafy greens, local/seasonal veggies, and seeds. Anything that didn't exist in caveman times will not make it to your plate or stomach. Many people involved in the Cross Fit program have adopted a Paleo lifestyle. Paleo pioneer Melissa Hartwig has lots of great cookbooks.  You can find a great book called the Whole 30 here on our Amazon store: www.theguudcompany.com/shop It's a great idea to give this diet a try for 30 days.  I have many friends who have tried a "Whole 30" program which is following the tenents of this diet very strictly for 30 days.  You might give it a try and see how you feel.

Is the Paleolithic Diet the Optimal Diet for the 21st Century World? Kirk Hamilton interviews Dr. Loren Cordain on the pros and cons of the Paleo Diet (hunter-gatherer diet) and its potential benefit on chronic disease prevention and reversal, and its practicality in the modern world. Points of discussion are the health aspects of grains (pro & con), the acid load of foods, in particular meats and grains, and what is more beneficial for public health - emulating the diets of hunter gatherer populations or long-living Blue Zone populations. Dr Cordain received his Ph.D. in Health & Physical Education from the University of Utah in 1981, and has been a Professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University since 1982.
