Paul Greive founded Pasturebird after searching for high-quality pasture-raised chicken to feed his family. Unable to find this chicken in stores, Paul and his family took matters into their own hands, setting out to produce nutrient-dense pasture-raised chicken. In the spring of 2012, Paul's brother ordered 50 chicks, marking the inception of their business. Pasturebird is now the largest pasture poultry producer in the world, with a mission to make nutrient-dense chicken more affordable and accessible to all. Pasturebird is revolutionizing the chicken industry by integrating solar-powered, self-driving chicken coops. This innovation provides their birds access to the outdoors, fresh grass, insects, and sunlight and contributes to soil regeneration for future generations. In an unconventional move, the company partnered with “Big Ag” giant Perdue. This strategic partnership granted Pasturebird access to hatcheries, feed mills, and slaughterhouses, sparing them from the significant debt they would have otherwise incurred to build these resources. In this episode, Paul and John discuss: Improving the way “Big Ag” operates Scaling up operations to reduce costs Focusing on one thing and outsourcing the rest Pasturebird's collaboration with Perdue  The innovation behind self-driving chicken houses The importance of effective marketing and messaging Incentivizing regenerative ag through fractional land ownership Additional Resources To learn more about Pasturebird and to place an order, please visit: https://www.pasturebird.com/ Connect with Paul on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulgreive/ About John Kempf John Kempf is the founder of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA). On today's episode, we are joined by Pasturebird Farm's founder & farmer,Paul Greive. Paul transitioned from city life as a corporate accountant without a background in agriculture when an illness required him to change the course of his life. After serving in the Marine Corps and contracting Lyme disease during sniper school, Paul began to look more closely at what he was putting into his body to focus on healing, but wasn't able to find pasture-raised chicken that fit his Paleo needs. His family ordered 50 chicks as part of an experimental hobby when they first moved to Temecula, and now Pasturebird is the largest pastured poultry farm in the world and official supplier of chicken to the LA Clippers and Dodgers. On this episode, we get into the problems with our food system, why pasture raised chicken is important, industry myths, sustainability, how to read labels at grocery stores, regenerative vs. factory farming and what this means for both plants and animals, glyphosate and its long lasting impact, the importance of buying directly from farmers, hidden truths about farmers markets, soil health and the environment, ancient wisdom from indigenous practices, and getting back to our roots by finding the joys of nature at any age. Whether a fatty snack or nutritious meal, all the food we consume has a massive impact on our bodies. That's why it's important that we have access to foods that are safe, nutritious, affordable, and, ideally, work in harmony with the environment. Paul Greive is an accountant, marine veteran, family man, and founder of Pasturebird. Pasturebird is one of the largest pastured poultry producers in the US that uses regenerative farming and provides people with more nutritious meat that comes from a more natural environment.  This accountant-turned-farmer believes everyone should have access to ethically-produced, nutritious food, which is why it has been a true joy for him to be one of the people pushing forward and re-inventing a new-old way of farming. In this episode, Cory and Paul talk about the journey of building Pasturebird over a decade. Paul shares his life in the military, his battle with Lyme disease, and starting a pasture-poultry farm business with only 50 chicks, to raising millions of chickens without using a single antibiotic or drug. Paul addresses the problems in the food industry and the future of farming with the regenerative agriculture movement.   ⭐ SPONSORED BY: Saybrook University   -- --

Thanks for joining us, today we welcome Paul Greive, Pasturebird's Co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing, located in Temecula, California. Paul shares with us Pasturebird's awesome story and what has driven their team to reinvent American poultry production. They've worked to scale the production of regenerative poultry, raising over two million chickens without antibiotics or drugs. They've kept their focus on the land, the animal, and the consumer all while improving the soil every year. Paul says, “we use nature as our template, and move animals to fresh pasture every day.” Listen in and Monte and Paul discuss this great American story of passion, innovation, and regeneration. Paul grew up in downtown Seattle and was a college athlete with no interest in food or agriculture. His farming journey began after contracting Lyme disease from a tick bite during Marine Corps sniper training and experiencing the joint pain, brain fog, and decreased performance common with the autoimmune condition. After returning from Iraq in 2009, he and his family started eating paleo and grew frustrated with the lack of pasture raised meat available in Southern California. In 2012, they ordered 50 chicks and raised them in the backyard as a fun project. Mimicking their mentor, Joel Salatin, they raised the birds in mobile coops on pasture, moving them every single day. The birds sold out instantly, and the business started to take shape, especially when the LA Lakers and LA Dodgers players became their first wholesale accounts. Pasturebird has continued to grow into the largest pasture raised chicken operation in the world, and they're hyper focused 2 things: 1) making true pasture raised + nutrient dense chicken more accessible and affordable, and 2) re-integrating animals and crops in a regenerative, closed loop system. The primary means for accomplishing this is Pasturebird's Automated Range Coop (ARC), a 6,000 bird floorless mobile coop that drives itself to fresh pasture every daily using solar power. https://www.pasturebird.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulgreive/ Got questions you want answered? Thank you to our presenting sponsor Merck Animal Health Ventures! https://www.merck-animal-health.com/animal-health-ventures/ StockCropper website: https://thestockcropper.com/ StockCropper YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TheStockCropper Zack Smith Twitter: https://twitter.com/zebulousprime Today's episode really speaks to the core of what this podcast is all about. We look at the current trajectory of where agriculture is headed, identify some of the negative outcomes associated with that trajectory, and explore how people and technology can play a role in creating a better future. I'm excited to share with you today's conversation with farmer and Stockcropper co-founder Zack Smith. If you've listened to the episode with Joe Bassett, or the recent episode with Paul Greive of Pasturebird, or if you spend any time on ag twitter or ag youtube, you probably have an idea of what the StockCropper is all about. But today's episode goes deeper into why these types of innovations are important. We talk about consolidation in ag and its impact on rural communities. Zack shares about his journey into soil health and how that's changed his operation and led him to the point that he felt it was critical that he find a way to incorporate animals onto his crop land. And we talk about these two diverging paths of being the low cost producer vs being a value added producer. A lot of great stuff in today's episode.  It used to be common practice for farmers to raise a diverse mix of animals and crops in a somewhat integrated system. Over the years through technological and policy changes, most farmers became more specialized, and today the majority of our crops and livestock are produced separate from each other. However, this creates other challenges that Zack will talk more about, and there is a growing push to try to integrate crops and livestock more for the sake of soil, the environment, and rural economies. StockCropper is creating a system to help with this. Their first product is the world's first multi-species, solar-powered, electrically-driven, autonomous mobile grazing system, called the ClusterCluck. Zack's going to talk a lot more about the system and what it represents for the future of agriculture.

I want to see environmentally destructive factory farming come to an end. I want to see antibiotics, especially prophylactic antibiotic use, come to and end - preferably before a major outbreak of antibiotic resistance caused by livestock. We’ve all seen the videos and documentaries about the many issues of factory farming and how it affects the animals, humans who produce them and the environment. While some people choose to stop eating meat as a way to reduce harm, there are many ways we can opt into another system that treats animals, the humans that raise them and the environment in a way that not only supports, but gives back to the land. In this episode I talk with farmer Paul Grieve of Primal Pastures and Pasturebird about what that looks like and how his farms lead with transparency first.   About Paul Grieve After changing the way he was eating to deal with chronic pain, Paul Greive discovered the higher priced meat he was buying for himself and his family wasn’t actually the quality it promised. Frustrated by the industry, he and his family joked about getting chickens, and five minutes later, his brother-in-law bought 50 chicks for the backyard, and Primal Pastures began. Primal Pastures is a family-run farm that has expanded from just pastured chicken to include other birds, grass fed lamb and beef, all raised in a way that supports animals and the land in a humane and regenerative way. Soon after, Primal Pastures’ sister company, Pasturebird, began, with the focus of providing a more affordable pastured chicken to restaurants, grocery and butcher shops and online retailers. 152: Farmer Paul Greive - Most "Free Range Organic" Chickens Never See the Light of Day

Available On: iTunes  | Google Play  | Stitcher  | Spotify Paul Greive is making a difference. He's the co-founder and CEO of PastureBird - the country's largest supplier of REAL pasture raised, free-range chicken in the Country. And what do I mean by real? Well, "pasture raised", when you see it on packaging in the market, doesn't mean what you think it does. Here's his story: When Paul got out of the military in 2011 and became a Certified Public Accountant, he decided to do something about his aching joints, arthritis, and constant Motrin use. He'd heard the hype about Paleo but never committed to trying it out. He finally gave it a go and after two weeks he says he felt like a kid again. He could breathe through his nose, his joint pain was gone, energy levels were up, and his sleep returned to normal. His wife and her whole family even jumped on board. People were losing weight, feeling better, and just overall healthier and happier. They were working hard to find good, clean foods and spending a lot of extra money on fancy labels like "grass fed", "free range", "organic", and "antibiotic free". The problem was, the more he learned about labels the more he found that they were complete BS. Free Range chickens never actually went outside, and "Antibiotic Free" birds actually got a bunch of antibiotics. Oh, and organic, that just dealt with a single certification for the feed. Wait, what? He felt cheated, misled, and lied to. Then, in April of 2012, the family sat around together over Easter, joking around about getting some chickens for the backyard. Nobody had any type of a farming or livestock background, so Paul thought it was just a big joke. But sure enough, his brother in law Rob disappeared from the room for about 5 minutes and returned with a big grin on his face. "Guys, I just ordered 50 chicks and they'll be here in 2 weeks" Rob said. From Andy: The more I learned about Paul's story, the more disturbed I became about the quality of the food that's on my family's dinner table. Do the chicken and eggs we spend good money on based on their labels actually meet the standards that a "reasonable person" would expect from the words "free range" and "pasture raised"? Paul Greive from Pasturebird joins the show. Paul is a partner in a southern California farm that started just five years ago from 50 chicks. And they're rising quickly. A $2000 investment among 4 guys started as an experiment. There came a point when the farm venture didn't have enough cash to buy zip ties. With those early years behind them, Pasturebird is one of the largest pastured poultry farms in the United States. They're working toward 6,000 a week, and they do it all in a daily move system using mobile range coops. My take from the interview with Paul is focus. You’ll hear that word pop up in our conversation in different ways.  Focus on the message, focus being the best, focus on a product, focus on the numbers. The farm grows broilers, but if you listen to Paul, you’ll hear takeaways that you can apply to your egg, turkey, or other farm business. We also cover some ground on certifications and predators. How did a startup pastured poultry farm deal with predators. Paul's conclusion provided a pivot point to profitability. As you will hear from my guest today Paul Greive of Primal Pastures "One of the most important things about marketing is not convincing people your product is X, it's about finding people who actually want X."   That’s the route that Primal Pastures has gone.  They don’t sell a cheap product.  They have positioned themselves as the premium product.   And that means they don’t try to compete in on price.  And they don’t worry about the non-believers or the price discriminant buyers. Because no amount of convincing is going to make that buyer pay up.  They already have a price point set in their mind, and the mind is a very hard thing to change as a marketing.   Therefore Primal Pasture’s sole job as marketers is to try to find and sell to the believers.  The customers who value their product for what it is and are willing to pay for it.     Over time they have learned that "It's a really sustainable model when you can start focusing on the customer and then you can figure out what products meet their needs and what your skills are to make those products.”  It’s a key distinction that they have made for their brand, Primal Pastures and one that they have stuck too.   Branding and marketing are just one of the topics that Paul Greive of Primal Pastures and I talk about today.   In addition to that you will also learn about how to prepare for a transition from full time job to full time farmer, how to overcome early obstacles in farm startup and Paul tackles the question - is pastured poultry a good business? The Bible teaches that God created all things. The Bible also teaches that his existence is known by everyone from what he has made, but men have exchanged this truth for a lie. (Romans 1) The beauty and design evident within nature screams for there to be a Creator. Looking beyond intelligent design, observation tells us that life does not come from non-life. There must be a God. Primal Pastures is a family run farm in Murrieta, CA. They are one of many farms that are growing crops and raising livestock following God's plan for farming. Andy's guest for this episode, Paul Greive, one of Primal Pastures' farmers shares more about this design for growing food that God has built into his creation. Paul Greive of Primal Pastures joins me to talk about being a grass farming entrepreneur. He talks about how the thought of Primal Pastures went from an idea to a reality one weekend while sitting around with his in-laws. This small step was the catalyst that helped develop Primal Pastures into a thriving beyond-sustainable meat business. Today they are continuing to grow the farm, their community, and the soil, but this isn't without its challenges. Paul discusses these challenges, and successes that he encounters on a daily basis as new farmer entrepreneur. He stresses the importance of connecting with your customer via Social Media, the advantages to starting out in the pastured poultry business, and the big advantages of leasing land over purchasing it. Episode Takeaways: -Don't undervalue and underestimate the value of connecting with your customers.-Stop focusing on the why it won't work, and go out and actually do something.-You can establish a profitable sustainable agriculture business with a small amount of land and a small amount of initial seed capital. -Learn as you go and learn from your mistakes.-Take advantage of direct marketing.Sell product and take payment online and deliver to drop points.-Looking into leasing land instead of buying it.
