Now that I've realized this, I've become obsessed with understanding what makes us healthy or ill. I want to live the best life I can and I want to be able to share this knowledge with others so that they can do the same. From Starting in a Kitchen to Creating a National Skincare Brand | EP 289: Bethany McDaniel, Primally Pure

Business with Purpose

My guest this week is Bethany McDaniel, founder of Primally Pure, which creates natural skin care products using real ingredients derived from nature for maximum purity and potency. Founder, farmer's wife, mama bear, matcha lover and bath taker, Bethany is the heartbeat and hard work behind the brand. When her family spontaneously started a beyond organic livestock farm in Southern California called Primal Pastures, she discovered the power of eating real food and her eyes were opened to a new world of wellness. Bethany subsequently purged her bathroom cabinets of toxic conventional skincare products and began formulating her own replacements with pure, simple ingredients. 4:20 – Bethany 101 Bethany started her business in 2015 and started experimenting with natural skincare products that wouldn't irritate her skin. She had irritated, acne-prone skin issues growing up. 7:19 – Researching her beauty routine She was exposed to the world of natural health through her husband and his family. They focused on eating whole foods, not processed foods, and it opened her eyes. Eating better increased her energy and made her healthier. It made her wonder about her skincare and cleaning products. Just because something is sold on the shelf at the supermarket or the drug store doesn't mean that it's safe, and in fact most of the ingredients in these products have never been tested. 13:23 – Where she started Using trial and error, she tested a lot of deodorant recipes. She started out mixing coconut oil and baking soda for deodorant and began adding other ingredients, such as beeswax and shea butter. 20:26 – The farm Bethany's family started a farm and began with raising chickens. They watched YouTube videos and all chipped in with farm chores. 27:23 – Overcoming analysis paralysis If you're not ready to dive into clean brands, there are still things you can do at home, such as DIY recipes. You can make DIY deodorant, cleansing oil, dry shampoo, etc. using ingredients you already have in your home. 31:24 – Challenging times Growing a team and managing people has been a challenge, especially because she had never managed anyone before. Ask yourself: Can I afford to learn this or should I bring someone on to do this work? 36:10 – Clean product imposters Natural beauty has become trendy, and a lot of companies use sneaky marketing to make their product sound natural. Watch out for products that say “all-natural,” “made with shea butter” or “made with coconut oil,” for example. Look at the ingredient list, especially the first five ingredients. 41:05 – What's next? This year, they're focused on hiring more people for the team and new sun care products for a 2023 launch. 45:09 – Get to know you Favorite Primally Pure product? Deodorant and cleansing oil Guilty pleasure? Bridgerton books FEATURED QUOTES We're always just encouraging people to go at whatever pace feels good to them. Every little change that is implemented is making a difference. There's no rush to detoxify everything all at once. Just because something is sold on the shelf at the supermarket or the drug store doesn't mean that it's safe. Ultimately, we are a company that cares about the health of our community and the people that we serve. Bethany's journey inspired her to start Primally Pure (with an initial $250 order for ingredients + supplies) to help others experience the benefits of using clean products. In addition to spending time at the PP Workshop and Spa envisioning new product ideas, Bethany is passionate about all things faith, clean living and biohacking. She loves sharing the knowledge she has gained with others - as well as taking regular getaways with her family to reset and refresh. Bethany is the Founder of Primally Pure and lives in Southern California with her husband and two daughters. Thank you to our partner of the show! Are you looking to clean up your household cleaning products this year? MamaSuds would like to help! The best way is to simply start with one product. Every time you run out of a specific cleaning product, replace it with a non-toxic one. Another tip, purchase a product that has multiple uses. Curiosity led a biostatistician down an unusual path. Intrigued by the concept that the SARS-COV-2 virus has not been isolated ever, our guest began inquiring of health departments around the world: Do you have evidence of an isolated virus? To date, over 100 institutions from all over the globe have responded...and there has been no evidence in sight of SARS-COV-2.  Christine Massey, a former biostatistician for cancer researchers, today discusses her research on the concept of viruses (and this “virus” in particular) and what she's learned through hundreds of FOIA requests (freedom of information act) from health departments all over the world.  She goes over how the cultures or samples used to "isolate the virus" are actually interfering with the process. She exposes the flaws in this methodology and the problem with PCR testing. She also explains why talk of “variants” is essentially nonsense.  Visit Christine's website: fluoridefreepeel.ca  Check out our website: westonaprice.org  Thank you to sponsors: Primal Pastures,  Paleo Valley,  BetterHelp

Ancestral wisdom and traditions are not just "a thing of the past" but can be found in the present! And there is much to learn from them still. Today, Hilda Labrada Gore, Wise Traditions podcast host and ancestral health advocate, shares stories of the ancestral health ways she encountered in Ecuador last summer. She notes the respect and gratitude toward Mother Earth (Pacha Mama) that she witnessed among the indigenous people, on display in particular during the spectacular Inti Raymi festival, celebrated during summer solstice. She describes how Mama Rosita Colta, a Kichwa partera (midwife) and curandera (healer) emphasized the importance of honoring life as something sacred, and how she was empowering women in her community to maintain their traditional birthing methods. Hilda also discusses the variety of traditional dishes that remain a part of Ecuador's culinary culture, including fried cuy (guinea pig). And, finally, she comments on how a small village in Ecuador handled COVID. Check out Hilda's website: holistichilda.com. Register for the Wise Traditions conference. Matt Maruca, of Ra Optics, says we need to discard this paradigm and embrace the sun! He explains that sunlight is critical for optimal cellular function. He calls sunlight “the greatest multivitamin ever,” since each wavelength of the sun's rays benefits the body. On this podcast, Matt tells his story of how he got into exploring the benefits of the sun in the first place (hint: he suffered from headaches, allergies, gut issues, and more), and he dives into exactly how sunlight helps our bodies work optimally. He also describes his "Light Diet" and offers simple steps we can take to avoid junk light and soak up the sun. The story of Regenerative Farming is the story of healing Planet Earth and Humanity from the inside out.  Paul Greive is the founder of Primal Pastures and Pasturebird, and a leader in regenerative agriculture where livestock animals are being utilized to build healthy soil, sequester carbon, and provide nutrient dense food.  After growing up a city kid and completing a career in college track and field, Paul's interest in food as medicine started after contracting Lyme disease during Marine Corps sniper command school in the backwoods of Virginia.   He and his family adopted Paleo back in 2010 and they started to understand more about the misleading label claims currently in the meat industry.  They ordered 50 chickens for their backyard, and the business was born.   Today, Primal Pastures feeds more than 1,000 families around Southern California with pasture raised beef, lamb, pork, chicken and even wild caught fish.  Paul is currently focused full time on Pasturebird, a project that aims to scale pastured livestock production to help make nutrient dense meats more accessible and affordable nationwide.   Stay Connected with Farmer Paul:   Websites:  https://primalpastures.com https://www.pasturebird.com Instagram: @primalpastures,@pasturebird Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/primalpastures ______________________ Stay Connected with the Future Generations Podcast:  Instagram: @futuregenpodcast, @thefuturegensd  and @drstantonhom_  Facebook: Future Generations Podcast and Future Generations | Clinic of Chiropractic  Website: Future Generations | Clinic of Chiropractic , Future Generations Podcast Remember to Rate, Review and Subscribe on iTunes and Follow us on Spotify!

We’ve all seen the videos and documentaries about the many issues of factory farming and how it affects the animals, humans who produce them and the environment. While some people choose to stop eating meat as a way to reduce harm, there are many ways we can opt into another system that treats animals, the humans that raise them and the environment in a way that not only supports, but gives back to the land. In this episode I talk with farmer Paul Grieve of Primal Pastures and Pasturebird about what that looks like and how his farms lead with transparency first.   About Paul Grieve After changing the way he was eating to deal with chronic pain, Paul Greive discovered the higher priced meat he was buying for himself and his family wasn’t actually the quality it promised. Frustrated by the industry, he and his family joked about getting chickens, and five minutes later, his brother-in-law bought 50 chicks for the backyard, and Primal Pastures began. Primal Pastures is a family-run farm that has expanded from just pastured chicken to include other birds, grass fed lamb and beef, all raised in a way that supports animals and the land in a humane and regenerative way. Soon after, Primal Pastures’ sister company, Pasturebird, began, with the focus of providing a more affordable pastured chicken to restaurants, grocery and butcher shops and online retailers. My guest today is Paul Grieve from Primal Pastures and Pasturebird, we’ll discuss how he got involved in farming, how they started, how they define Primal, their work with the Billion Dollar Buyer and so much more. Show Notes “Primal” is the starting point for the food and it’s consumption. The farm started with Paul’s brother in law ordering 50 chicks The foundation of the farm is pasture based. Within three weeks of posting about the chickens on Facebook, all 50 chicks had been sold. To start a farm you often need to make short term sacrifices to make long term gains. “Bugs not drugs.” is a catchphrase of Pasturebird and Primal Pastures, they have not had to use any drugs on the operation, when working on a pasture based system there’s a lower risk of illness. Pasturebird raises pastured chicken for Wholesales accounts. The first customer for Pasturebird was the LA Lakers. In Southern California, Pasturebird can raise chickens all year round. Pasturebird was on “Billion Dollar Buyer.” Regenerative Agriculture is more dynamic that merely Sustainable Agriculture. True Sustainability is not possible, life lives within an ebb and flow, either increasing or decreasing. The “Ideal Customer” Myth

Small Farm Nation

It’s easy to grow your farm or small business, right? Just define your ideal customer and find more like them. Well, today, I’ll put an end to this myth and explain why it’s not about your ideal customer, but rather it’s about YOU! You know, it’s frustrating when we start a farm or any new business. We hear things like, if you build it they will come. Experts advise us to simply define our ideal customer…our avatar, in modern speak, and we’re all set. Simple as that. Have you heard that before? Here’s an example of what the process looks like to define an ideal customer. I’ll call mine—Jane. And…I think Jane works in advertising. She has two kids and lives on the outskirts of a major city—let’s say, Dallas. Jane enjoys spending time with family, cooking from scratch and playing with her cats. So far, sounds like a profile you might see on a dating site, but I like Jane, don’t you? Let’s see what else we know about Jane. She values organic, sustainable, locally sourced food that is non-GMO, and she detests factory farming. Don’t we all? So, naturally, her brand values are conservative and traditional with a strong need for integrity. Great…that should help us with naming our business and products, as well as font and color selections, and all our copywriting. Jane is AWESOME, right? And this is what we’re told to do…to create an avatar like this. But is that really sound advice? On first glance, maybe it is. I mean, it sounds both simple and logical…just target people who are likely to buy from you. So, in theory, it’s one of those things that sounds sensible, so people keep repeating this advice you hear. Don’t believe me? Just Google “how to identify your ideal customer” and you’ll over 200 hundred million results on it. But, despite being advice frequently dished out, there’s a big problem with this approach. And, actually, in my experience, there are five problems with this approach. Here’s the first problem. If you try to target an IDEAL customer with your branding, you EXCLUDE all others. Sure, I suppose it’s great if you get lucky and nail your ideal customer and pick the right words/phrases/colors for your website. But what if you’re off the mark?  You turn people off, never to return. So, while it seems to make sense that you should talk about your customers first and their needs, if you have a farm business, I’m going to give you the opposite advice. Start with talking about YOU.  Your vision, your mission—your reason. It may make you feel uncomfortable, but it’s much better to start off talking about YOU rather than a made-up ideal customer, and share your story. Which leads me to the second problem. You didn’t set out to serve an ideal customer, did you? You set out to create something YOU loved. I mean, why did you start your business? Did you do it because you had some mythical dream customer in mind you wanted to serve? Or was it because you wanted to do something YOU loved...something you were passionate about. And then share the result of that with WHOEVER wanted to support you. Did Apple start this way, with a single dream customer in mind?  Amazon? Polyface? Paul and his family at Primal Pastures and Pasturebird? Did we start that way at Nature’s Harmony? No, of course not, and you didn’t either… Look, I know what it takes to start a business. It takes passion. If you want to be successful, it takes much more than just passion, but it’s rare to see a business started that wasn’t fueled by passion. And it’s that passion you need to put eloquently into words, because when you do it right, you’ll accomplish two important things. The first is that your words will inspire and resonate with people. People who will care about your new business and will support you. The second thing that well crafted words and images will accomplish is that they’ll cast a wide net. And, believe me, you’re going to need that wide net, at least until your operation has matured. I’ll tell you why,

Farmer Paul Grieve, of Primal Pastures in Southern California peels back the curtain on how life on the farm affects our own lives. We all want to be healthy and eat real, nutrient-dense food. This becomes a reality when we begin cooperating with nature and regenerating the soil. When we help the land heal, we heal ourselves. On today's episode, Paul describes what regenerative agriculture looks like and why it's important. It's healthy farming at its best--restoring the soil, the air quality, ground water, and wildlife, while at the same time providing nutrient-dense food for people. He also talks about how challenging it is to come by. He describes how labels like "organic," "cage-free,""antibiotic-free," etc. don't tell the whole story. He explains why organic food costs producers and consumers more. In sum, he describes the how and why behind sustainable, regenerative agriculture and how it is worth the effort--since it benefits us, our children, and grandchildren. As you will hear from my guest today Paul Greive of Primal Pastures "One of the most important things about marketing is not convincing people your product is X, it's about finding people who actually want X."   That’s the route that Primal Pastures has gone.  They don’t sell a cheap product.  They have positioned themselves as the premium product.   And that means they don’t try to compete in on price.  And they don’t worry about the non-believers or the price discriminant buyers.
