Thanks for joining us, today we welcome Paul Greive, Pasturebird's Co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing, located in Temecula, California. Paul shares with us Pasturebird's awesome story and what has driven their team to reinvent American poultry production. They've worked to scale the production of regenerative poultry, raising over two million chickens without antibiotics or drugs. They've kept their focus on the land, the animal, and the consumer all while improving the soil every year. Paul grew up in downtown Seattle and was a college athlete with no interest in food or agriculture. His farming journey began after contracting Lyme disease from a tick bite during Marine Corps sniper training and experiencing the joint pain, brain fog, and decreased performance common with the autoimmune condition. After returning from Iraq in 2009, he and his family started eating paleo and grew frustrated with the lack of pasture raised meat available in Southern California. In 2012, they ordered 50 chicks and raised them in the backyard as a fun project. Mimicking their mentor, Joel Salatin, they raised the birds in mobile coops on pasture, moving them every single day. The birds sold out instantly, and the business started to take shape, especially when the LA Lakers and LA Dodgers players became their first wholesale accounts. Pasturebird has continued to grow into the largest pasture raised chicken operation in the world, and they're hyper focused 2 things: 1) making true pasture raised + nutrient dense chicken more accessible and affordable, and 2) re-integrating animals and crops in a regenerative, closed loop system. A lot of great stuff in today's episode.  It used to be common practice for farmers to raise a diverse mix of animals and crops in a somewhat integrated system. Over the years through technological and policy changes, most farmers became more specialized, and today the majority of our crops and livestock are produced separate from each other. However, this creates other challenges that Zack will talk more about, and there is a growing push to try to integrate crops and livestock more for the sake of soil, the environment, and rural economies. StockCropper is creating a system to help with this. Their first product is the world's first multi-species, solar-powered, electrically-driven, autonomous mobile grazing system, called the ClusterCluck. Zack's going to talk a lot more about the system and what it represents for the future of agriculture.

Tyler Nuss wears many hats in his day to day life but, whether it’s working his day job in supply chain and operation for Rivian, an electric car startup, or being an advocate for sustainable agriculture - he’s on a mission to change the world. Co-founding the podcast the Modern Acre with his brother Tim. Tyler’s goal was to provide a community about innovation in food and ag business. Indirectly, it has built Tyler and Tim’s relationship with their family farm, allowed them to consult on other farms, and continue to broaden their horizons and, subsequently, the opportunities of Nuss Farms.  The mission of The Modern Acre was to inspire other entrepreneurial and like-minded people in agriculture with their podcast, making a cross-pollination of people on the farm, farmers that were innovating and doing different things from the “normal” systems, and business leaders in the world of food and ag.  “We both knew very early on that this was a long-term vision and that we saw the value in building an audience, building great content, and putting it out in the world,” says Tyler. Despite the original plan to make a “Bigger Pockets” concept, the show morphed on it’s own as they focused not on monetary gain, but on putting good content out for two years.  With good content creation comes amazing opportunities, which the Nuss Family Farm has begun to see as an indirect result of the Modern Acre podcast. While the most common form of podcast monetization is sponsorships and advertisements, Nuss Farms has been able to partner with new business model opportunities and then promote them through the podcast.  At a minimum, Tyler says that these opportunities have been extremely fruitful as just recently, their sustainable vegetable farm has partnered with Pasturebird. Pasturebird is an affiliate program that they have incorporated and, while it may seem like an untraditional concept, it provides a unique multi-faceted opportunity for their farm. Find your niche and what makes you different - then lean into that! Both Tyler and Tim have built careers off of the farm, Tyler in technology and Tim in import/export of produce. Finding what makes them unique makes it interesting - no matter what. For example: Tyler talking about farming is okay; Tyler who is a fifth generation farmer talking about farming is more interesting; Tyler, a fifth generation farmer involved in the building of electric pickups talking about farming is very interesting! If it wasn’t for the podcast, Tyler doesn’t believe that neither himself nor Tim would be as engaged in the farm as they would have been without Modern Acre. As they learned more information and chatting with more industry professionals, they found themselves routinely going back to the farm to have open conversations with their brother and father about the operation. They have also found themselves having consulting conversations with others in agriculture, specifically those looking to diversify their farm and move into a more sustainable or regenerative farming aspect. We’ve all seen the videos and documentaries about the many issues of factory farming and how it affects the animals, humans who produce them and the environment. While some people choose to stop eating meat as a way to reduce harm, there are many ways we can opt into another system that treats animals, the humans that raise them and the environment in a way that not only supports, but gives back to the land. In this episode I talk with farmer Paul Grieve of Primal Pastures and Pasturebird about what that looks like and how his farms lead with transparency first.   About Paul Grieve After changing the way he was eating to deal with chronic pain, Paul Greive discovered the higher priced meat he was buying for himself and his family wasn’t actually the quality it promised. Frustrated by the industry, he and his family joked about getting chickens, and five minutes later, his brother-in-law bought 50 chicks for the backyard, and Primal Pastures began. Primal Pastures is a family-run farm that has expanded from just pastured chicken to include other birds, grass fed lamb and beef, all raised in a way that supports animals and the land in a humane and regenerative way. Soon after, Primal Pastures’ sister company, Pasturebird, began, with the focus of providing a more affordable pastured chicken to restaurants, grocery and butcher shops and online retailers. He's the co-founder and CEO of PastureBird - the country's largest supplier of REAL pasture raised, free-range chicken in the Country. And what do I mean by real? Well, "pasture raised", when you see it on packaging in the market, doesn't mean what you think it does. Here's his story: When Paul got out of the military in 2011 and became a Certified Public Accountant, he decided to do something about his aching joints, arthritis, and constant Motrin use. He'd heard the hype about Paleo but never committed to trying it out. He finally gave it a go and after two weeks he says he felt like a kid again. He could breathe through his nose, his joint pain was gone, energy levels were up, and his sleep returned to normal. His wife and her whole family even jumped on board. People were losing weight, feeling better, and just overall healthier and happier. They were working hard to find good, clean foods and spending a lot of extra money on fancy labels like "grass fed", "free range", "organic", and "antibiotic free". The problem was, the more he learned about labels the more he found that they were complete BS. Free Range chickens never actually went outside, and "Antibiotic Free" birds actually got a bunch of antibiotics. Oh, and organic, that just dealt with a single certification for the feed. Wait, what? He felt cheated, misled, and lied to. Then, in April of 2012, the family sat around together over Easter, joking around about getting some chickens for the backyard. Nobody had any type of a farming or livestock background, so Paul thought it was just a big joke. But sure enough, his brother in law Rob disappeared from the room for about 5 minutes and returned with a big grin on his face. "Guys, I just ordered 50 chicks and they'll be here in 2 weeks" Rob said. From Andy: The more I learned about Paul's story, the more disturbed I became about the quality of the food that's on my family's dinner table. It’s a perfect place to showcase pasture-raised chicken.  In a bad cook’s grill, however, it’s a great opportunity to for a tough, dry, and poor eating experience.  Mike talks about some of the biggest challenges to eating chicken: bland chicken and grilling. Mike shares tips for grilling pastured raised chicken using two types of charcoal grills. The first is a typical homeowner style grill, such as a Kamada grill, using direct heat. When grilling chicken barbecue for large groups, Mike uses a commercial chicken grill manufactured from Poultry Man. All the details are in the episode. Bland flavor is the second biggest problem to grilling chicken. Pasture-raised chicken has an inherent advantage in the flavor department because of the diverse diet, older birds, and sometimes, different breeds of chicken. The flavor of the chicken starts on day one of its life in the brooder based on what the farmer feeds. Find out how you can create flavorful chicken in this episode. Taste test. Taste is incredibly subjective, and you know this if you've ever talked with people who eat. This article from Farm Babe conducted a blind taste test among friends using several brands of chicken, including a pasture-raised variety from Pasturebird. These types of taste tests are great fun, educational, and offer lots of anecdotal discussion. In this episode, Mike breaks down the problem with this taste test. Hint: the winner was seasoned the same as the other participants. Chicken Basting Sauce I baste this on my chicken as it grills when I'm cooking on direct heat using my chicken grill from Badger's Millside Farm. 5 cups apple cider vinegar 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup salt (original recipe calls for 1 cup) Add water to make one one gallon. This will easily handle 40 pounds of chicken. My guest today is Paul Grieve from Primal Pastures and Pasturebird, we’ll discuss how he got involved in farming, how they started, how they define Primal, their work with the Billion Dollar Buyer and so much more. Show Notes “Primal” is the starting point for the food and it’s consumption. The farm started with Paul’s brother in law ordering 50 chicks The foundation of the farm is pasture based. Within three weeks of posting about the chickens on Facebook, all 50 chicks had been sold. To start a farm you often need to make short term sacrifices to make long term gains. “Bugs not drugs.” is a catchphrase of Pasturebird and Primal Pastures, they have not had to use any drugs on the operation, when working on a pasture based system there’s a lower risk of illness. Pasturebird raises pastured chicken for Wholesales accounts. The first customer for Pasturebird was the LA Lakers. In Southern California, Pasturebird can raise chickens all year round. Pasturebird was on “Billion Dollar Buyer.” Regenerative Agriculture is more dynamic that merely Sustainable Agriculture. Paul Greive from Pasturebird joins the show. Paul is a partner in a southern California farm that started just five years ago from 50 chicks. And they're rising quickly. A $2000 investment among 4 guys started as an experiment. There came a point when the farm venture didn't have enough cash to buy zip ties. With those early years behind them, Pasturebird is one of the largest pastured poultry farms in the United States. They're working toward 6,000 a week, and they do it all in a daily move system using mobile range coops. My take from the interview with Paul is focus. You’ll hear that word pop up in our conversation in different ways.  Focus on the message, focus being the best, focus on a product, focus on the numbers.
