As we discuss often on this podcast, “gender affirming care” can appeal to trauma survivors as an enticing way out of pain. Some of these people go through the entire process of medical intervention only to find themselves pursuing detransition. This week I am joined by Torren Danowski, a detransitioner who found himself in this exact situation. Torren and I discuss his unique story from his struggle with gender dysphoria, and his adventure with psychedelics, to the place of faith, religion, ministry and church in his life. Torren reminds us of the deeper work it takes to truly discover one's identity, and urges listeners to align your journey first with learning how to suffer well. Torren Danowski is a detransitioned man living in Philadelphia. He attempted transition twice in his early 30s after struggling with gender most of his life. But once he realized that his gender dysphoria was actually the symptom of something deeper, he began addressing that deeper issue, and saw the pain of gender dysphoria begin to subside. Torren was involved in Libertarian politics and ran for Pennsylvania State Representative in 2022. He has since stepped away from politics and is seeking a career change, moving from corporate America to exploring counseling, psychology, and theology. You can follow Torren's work on substack. In recent months, Torren has indicated that these books have been a great influence on him during his journey."The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk“The Divine Conspiracy Bible Study Participant's Guide: Jesus's Master Class for Life" by Dallas Willard"Try Softer" by Aundi Kolber"Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: It's Impossible to Be Spiritually Mature, While Remaining Emotionally Immature" by Peter ScazzeroGender Dysphoria Alliancehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs9lzh9l9wc&t=5s If you enjoyed this conversation, please rate & review it on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. For many of us, the past year has prompted a paradigm shift in how we think about our community, our economy, and even our democracy. This week, we hear from three people who have led the way in forging new ways of thinking about the world around us. Hillary talks to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson about how a rigid hierarchy of caste in the United States has shaped—and warped—our society. And she checks in with Pennsylvania State Representative and U.S. Senate candidate Malcolm Kenyatta, who is part of a generation of young people changing the face of politics in this country. Isabel Wilkerson’s first book, The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration, won numerous awards and her newest book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, is being adapted into a feature film with Netflix. Reshma Saujani is the founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a nonprofit working to close the gender gap in technology. She is the author of the bestselling books Brave, Not Perfect and Girls Who Code: Learn the Code and Change the World. Reshma is also the host of the award-winning podcast Brave, Not Perfect. Malcolm Kenyatta is State Representative for Pennsylvania’s 181st district in North Philadelphia, and the first LGBTQ person of color in the state assembly’s history. In February of this year, he announced his run for Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate seat in 2022.
