Do psychiatric medications alter brain energy and metabolic health?Dr. Stephen Cunnane, a professor and researcher at the University of Sherbrooke, has been at the forefront of studying glucose and ketone metabolism in the aging brain, pioneering advanced imaging techniques to measure how the brain utilizes these critical energy sources with neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.While glucose PET imaging has long been used to study brain energy metabolism, Dr. Cunnane's team was the first to develop ketone PET imaging, allowing researchers to look at the relationship between glucose and ketone metabolism in the brain and understand how ketones support brain function when it struggles to use glucose for energy. Now, Dr. Cunnane has turned his attention to metabolic psychiatry and is working on a new study looking at brain energy metabolism in individuals experiencing first-episode psychosis. This study will allow researchers insights into the metabolic state of the brain at the onset of major mental illness and how psychiatric medications influence brain energy use.In this episode, you will learn:How the brain uses fuel as we age – Why glucose metabolism declines over time and how ketones may compensate in aging and neurodegenerative conditions. The first ketone PET imaging studies – How Dr. Cunnane's team developed a method to directly measure ketone uptake in the brain and compare it to glucose metabolismPsychosis and brain energy metabolism – Examining glucose and ketone utilization in first-episode psychosis before and after antipsychotic treatment.Carbohydrate reduction in older adults – Findings from a study showing how moderate carb restriction improved metabolic and mental health in retirement home residents independent of weight loss.Parkinson's disease and ketones – Investigating how exercise, exogenous ketones, and carbohydrate restriction may enhance brain energy supply and improve symptoms.Dr. Cunnane has been a pioneer in the field of ketogenic therapy and brain energy. In addition to all the incredible work he is doing in the aging brain, we are excited to see his new research focusing on such critical components of metabolic psychiatry.Expert Featured:Dr. Stephen Cunnanehttps://recherche-cerveau-sherbrooke.ca/en/laboratory-team/Studies MentionedA reduced carbohydrate diet improves glycemic regulation in hyperglycemic older people in a retirement home: the SAGE studyhttps://doi.org/10.1139/apnm-2024-0277Resources MentionedBrain Research Team Websitehttps://recherche-cerveau-sherbrooke.ca/en/Revolutionizing Assisted Living: Hal Cranmer's Ketogenic & Carnivore Approach to Senior Wellnesshttps://youtu.be/s86CFw0qhVc?feature=sharedFollow our channel for more information and education from Bret Scher, MD, FACC, including interviews with leading experts in Metabolic Psychiatry.Learn more about metabolic psychiatry and find helpful resources athttps://metabolicmind.org/About us:Metabolic Mind is a non-profit initiative of Baszucki Group working to transform the study and treatment of mental disorders by exploring the connection between metabolism and brain health. In this episode of The Metabolic Classroom, Dr. Bikman explores the history, science, and benefits of ketones, focusing on exogenous ketones.Ben highlights the significant benefits of ketones for brain health. He disputes the common belief that glucose is the brain's preferred fuel, citing research by Dr. George Cahill that indicates the brain relies heavily on ketones during fasting. The classroom also addresses the evolution and advantages of exogenous ketones. Early forms of exogenous ketones, like ketone salts, had limitations such as mineral imbalance and poor taste. Advances led to the development of ketone esters and bioidentical BHB, which are more effective and palatable. Exogenous ketones can help control appetite, reduce inflammation, and improve exercise performance. Despite initial concerns about their potential to be converted back into fat, Professor Bikman clarifies that this is not a risk, as the liver cannot reverse ketone production into fat.Overall, Dr. Bikman emphasizes that while ketones themselves offer numerous metabolic benefits, the primary advantage of a ketogenic state is maintaining low insulin levels, which supports fat burning and overall metabolic health. He encourages the use of exogenous ketones to enhance these benefits, particularly for managing cravings, improving physical performance, and supporting cognitive function.00:01 - Introduction to Ketones01:58 - Types of Ketones - Explanation of the three main types of ketones: acetoacetate, acetone, and beta-hydroxybutyrate.02:58 - Ketones and Blood Acidity - Discussion on how ketones can affect blood acidity and the distinction between ketosis and ketoacidosis.04:04 - Insulin's Role in Ketone Production - How insulin levels determine whether the body produces fat or ketones from acetyl-CoA.07:23 - Benefits of Low Insulin Levels - Overview of the metabolic benefits of low insulin levels, including improved fat burning and metabolic health.08:19 - Ketones and Brain Health - The positive effects of ketones on brain function and cognitive health, debunking the myth that glucose is the brain's preferred fuel.13:33 - Ketones and Physical Performance - Evidence that ketones improve physical performance and energy efficiency in muscle cells.17:31 - Anti-inflammatory Effects of Ketones - Ketones' role in inhibiting inflammation and their benefits for inflammatory disorders.Studies Referenced:Alzheimer's and Parkinson's (Cunnane et al., 2016): https://alzres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13195-021-00783-xKetones Elicit Distinct Alterations in Adipose Mitochondrial Bioenergetics: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32872407/Ketogenic Diet Reduces Midlife Mortality and Improves Memory in Aging Mice: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28877458/The Effects of Ketogenic Diet on Insulin Sensitivity and Weight Loss, Which Came First: The Chicken or the Egg?: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37513538/ Learn more: https://www.insuliniq.com Hosted on Acast. Most of us have some idea what dementia is. Though we toss the word ‘demented' around as a put down, Dementia, and Alzheimers experienced up close is difficult to witness. In part why it is so difficult to watch others go through the decline is because much of it can be avoided entirely by adopting a Low Carb High Fat Ketogenic diet. If there was one specific condition that is most improved by ketones, this would be it. In fact, unlike other conditions that can be improved by a ketogenic diet, taking ketones directly for Alzheimers or dementia has become a gold mind for certain companies that are now in business of creating them. The market for both LCHF Ketogenic diet and for ketones is based on two truths, the rate of Alzheimers is at an all time high and will just increase, and Mild Cognitive Impairment is happening at a younger and younger age. Both demographics can be addressed fairly easily. Listen in to hear how we do that.Sweethearts Forever. Picking up where Dr. Cunnane left off in part one, we get into other aspects of ketones and what we know about them specifically, brain health, and how the brain's ability to use ketones as a fuel does not diminish with age. Rather, it is our ability to use glucose as a fuel decreases. Due to the decreasing effectiveness of the insulin to get the glucose into the brain. Sometimes referred to as insulin resistance. The great news is ketones are not a problem and they are available. We talk about MCT Oils in general, and specifically. Also the production of GABA and it's effect of calming the hyperexcitable states of certain neurologic conditions like Epilepsy but also Alzheimers.  Stephen Talks about the similarities between Alzheimers and Epilepsy and why some epilepsy medications help Alzheimers. Episode 2216 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Dr. Stephen Cunnane and they discuss brain development and fats, taking care of your brain, supplements, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/taking-care-your-brain-dr-stephen-cunnane-episode-2216 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS TAKING CARE OF YOUR BRAIN Vinnie starts the show by sharing how he heard about Dr. Stephen Cunnane through Dr. Mary Newport, who has been on the show recently. (1:45) Dr. Steven Cunnane talks a bit about his book, The book discusses brain development in babies and the need for healthy fats. (6:00) It also discusses how various nutrients play the part in various ways in human evolution.  The big question Vinnie and Stephen discuss is: are you taking care of your brain? (15:00) Or are you letting it rot with what you are eating? Vinnie's interest in the brain comes from taking years of beatings playing football; as a result, he's curious about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). (16:00) Stephen says it's never too late to be able to make improvements; the question becomes "what can you do"? (21:25) Part of the challenge is the parameters given to doctors that make them hesitant to suggest low-carb. Mark Cucazzella is brought up as an example. The two discuss the movie "First Do No Harm", by Jim Abrams of the Charlie Foundation. (25:05) Charlie's doctors wanted to give him a lobotomy for his seizures; instead, they controlled his epilepsy with the ketogenic diet. They also discuss Eric Westman, Jeff Volek, Steve Phinney, Tim Noakes, and others and what an important part they play in low-carb science. They switch to discuss certain limitations of the current healthcare systems. (29:50) Certain low-carb doctors are walking away from standard practice so they can actually practice health care and not sick care. ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS Vinnie and Stephen also discuss what zinc and other minerals are optimal for the brain and how they help. (34:10) They discuss iodine, zinc, selenium, and certain deficiencies. They chat about the best sources of various nutrients. More is not always better, and Dr. Cunnane explains why. Don't over-intellectualize it: just eat sensibly. The conversation leads to a discussion about omega fatty acids, cholesterol, and ketones, and how the brain needs them. (46:30) There is still plenty to learn about cognitive decline and Alzheimer's; a lot of questions remain! (51:00) But there is more to it than diet and diabetes; social interaction, looking forward to things, and exercise seem to play a part as well in keeping a healthy brain. Conflicts of interest in science and medicine muddy up the waters of good information. (55:00) Dr. Cunnane has been awarded a research chair position at his university; as a result, the research will focus on ketotherapeutics. (1:01:30) They'll be studying ketogenic interventions of all sorts for mental illness, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. Congresswoman Madeleine Dean thought she understood addiction – but it wasn't until her son Harry Cunnane was struggling that she came to truly realize what it means when a loved one has a substance use disorder. Now Harry has been in recovery for more than eight years, and the mother and son have written a joint memoir, titled Under Our Roof: A Son's Battle for Recovery, a Mother's Battle for Her Son. With this book, the pair hope to share the lessons they've learned about addiction and recovery with other families impacted by this disease.  In the 19th episode of Heart of the Matter, Elizabeth interviews Madeleine and Harry about what they gained from writing Under Our Roof, what it means when people refer to addiction as a family disease, and the importance of amplifying the possibility of recovery – not just the horror of active addiction. Today, Madeleine continues to serve Pennsylvania's fourth district, and Harry remains active in the addiction recovery community, even working as a resource director at the same treatment center where he originally sought help. Related reading: After you listen, explore these resources from Partnership to End Addiction to learn more about the topics and themes discussed in this episode:  How to Identify Substance Use Disorder & Addiction How to Make a Discharge Plan When Your Child Leaves Addiction Treatment Get One-on-One Help to Address Your Child's Substance Use

Seven years ago, Dr. Karl started looking into how to purchase C8 MCT Oil in liquid form because it was not available anywhere. He thought it could help to heal his gut from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and render his impending surgery unnecessary. And it did! That made him look even deeper into why it worked so well. He learned all about ketones and how they were anti-inflammatory. That required him to learn about ketosis and the ketogenic diet. So, his fascination with the rabbit hole of exploration into C8 MCT Oil began and it has not stopped since.Welcome to another episode of the Keto Naturopath. Today, we will be going over the history of the use of MCT oil. Dr. Karl had a product on Amazon for more than three years that was the highest natural source of caprylic acid triglyceride (C8) available in North America and Europe. He no longer sells his product on Amazon, but the story of how he got there is still valuable. TriglyceridesMostly, fats get transported through the body as a triglyceride. Any triglyceride is made of three fats, so when Dr. Karl mentions C8 (meaning caprylic acid triglyceride), he is referring to the three individual fatty acids that make up caprylic acid. Almost two yearsDr. Karl spent almost two years looking for a sustainably–harvested, natural source of caprylic acid triglyceride derived from palm oil. Thinking about C8He remembered from med school that one of the things you can use for gut problems was caprylic acid triglyceride, a supplement available at any pharmacy. A productDr. Karl came out with his product in late 2015 and put it on Amazon. DishonestyThrough that experience, Dr. Karl learned that there is a lot of dishonesty in marketing, particularly regarding supplements.Three yearsDr. Karl kept his product on Amazon for about three years and went through a couple of cycles. Then, a few months ago, he took it off Amazon. KetonesNow, he uses a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) to keep track of his glucose levels. He found that by using a little C8 on a snack, his blood sugar levels stay consistently low because it makes ketones. Ketone production is the preferential fuel for the brain, and the ketones keep his energy levels up. A brain hackUsing a reasonable amount of C8 is a healthy brain hack for producing ketones. Links and resources:PSMF 30-day courseCheck out the Keto Naturopath website, join our Facebook Group, and follow us on Pinterest!Subscribe to our YouTube Channel!Download our Free Keto Foods ListVisit our partnersBuy Keto Friendly Dry Farm WinesGet your KetoMoJo Here and test your ketones.Studies Links:Tricaprylin Alone Increases Plasma Ketone Response More Than Coconut Oil or Other Medium-Chain Triglycerides: An Acute Crossover Study in Healthy AdultsPlasma Ketone and Medium Chain Fatty Acid Response in Humans Consuming Different Medium Chain Triglycerides During a Metabolic Study DayBook mentioned:Survival of the Fattest by Stephen C. One of the things I enjoy most about hosting a podcast is that sometimes I get the opportunity to interview people who’ve found something they're passionate about, and they turn that passion into a career. This week’s guest, Pat Cunnane, is a prime example of someone who’s done just that. Pat and I have few things in common, we both love bikes, and we’ve both spent our formative years turning wrenches as bike mechanics at a local bike shop (not the same bike shop). What we don’t have in common, is how we envisioned our future working in the bicycle industry. Where I never saw much of a career path, Pat saw an opportunity to build a career doing something he absolutely loved. And that vision took him from a poorly paid bike shop mechanic, to president of arguably one the biggest bike companies in the world. Pat has played an interracial part in the world of cycling and was an absolute pioneer in the development in modern day mountain biking. We discuss Pats' rise through the ranks in the cycling industry and some of the trials and tribulations, personally and professionally, along the way. For more information about Pat’s is current project, check out Yuba Bikes.

Harry co-authored this book with his mother, Congresswomen Madeline Dean, and it describes the ugliness of addiction through the eyes of both the individual struggling with this disease, and the subsequent pain felt by parents as they try desperately to help their child towards sobriety. I really appreciated Harry’s brutal honesty when describing his battle with addiction and what his path was to sobriety. Harry and his mother wrote this book with the hopes that their story will inspire and inform other families experiencing a similar struggle. Please check out more about Harry on Instagram @harrycunnane, and his mother Congresswomen Madeline Dean at https://dean.house.gov. In conversation with Action News anchor, Jim Gardner On the eve of the biggest professional risk of her life-running for a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives-Madeleine Dean discovered that her son, Harry Cunnane, was battling a severe painkiller addiction. What followed was a family struggle fought by countless American families caught in the grip of the opioid epidemic. Told with candor through the dual perspectives of mother and son, Under Our Roof offers a first-hand look at this public health crisis. Concurrently publishing with Under Our Roof is You Are Always Loved: A Story of Hope, a child's companion to the adult memoir. This is a picture book, featuring an evergreen message about hope and unconditional love. Dean currently serves as the U.S. Representative for Pennsylvania's fourth congressional district and Cunnane works as a resource director at the same treatment center at which he initially sought help for his addiction. Corn oil is like inflammation in a bottle. The problem with it is that it is a high concentration of a very inflammatory fat, linoleic acid, and Omega-6 polyunsaturated fat. In this episode, we finish pulling back the curtain on the Industrial Corn Complex and how it’s ruining your health by compromising your metabolism without you even knowing it. One of the most damaging componentsOne of the most damaging components in our modern diet is processed vegetable oils. Those oils contain excessive amounts of oxygenated Omega-6 linoleic acid. That is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that causes even worse biological damage than gets caused by refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.Chronic metabolic and degenerative diseasesAlmost all chronic metabolic and degenerative diseases are caused primarily by the preponderance of industrial vegetable oils in the diet. When heated, vegetable oils degrade to toxic oxidation products.Boosting your healthReplacing vegetable oils and the foods that contain them with healthy fats will go a long way towards boosting your overall health, reducing risk, and increasing your metabolic health.KetoYou need to know your fats, and the kind of fats you need, for keto. You need to choose your fats wisely and eat good fats.CornForty percent of corn produced in the US gets used for ethanol production. Roughly 36 percent of all the corn, plus the distiller’s grain left over from the ethanol production, gets fed to cattle, pigs, and chickens.Talking to an agronomistDr. Goldkamp spoke to an agronomist, who is someone who studies animal grazing and is an expert in soil management and field-crop production. He thought that the whole case was overblown, and there is not that much of a difference between pasture-raised cows and those that are non-pasture-raised. Survival of the FattestIn his book, Survival of the Fattest, Stephen Cunnane explains that our whole human population evolved along the ocean and riversides on a fish-based diet. The difference will probably never come outDr. Goldkamp does not think that the difference between pasture-raised cows and those that are non-pasture-raised will ever be studied and known. That is because farmers are unlikely to let anyone in to reveal that their meat or milk is not as good as that produced in another way. And the lobbies of the cattle and dairy industries are large and strong. The development of genetically modified cornCompanies like Monsanto and Syngenta developed corn with the use of genetic-modification. The idea behind genetically modifying the corn was that it would need fewer pesticides. GlyphosateRoundup is a chemical pesticide that contains glyphosate. A genetically modified corn got developed to be able to tolerate glyphosate so that the weeds, and not the corn, would be killed by it. After many generations, the weeds also developed a tolerance to glyphosate, which subsequently got banned in Germany and several other countries.Links:Join Our Facebook Group Keto NaturopathSubscribe to our YouTube ChannelDownload our Free Keto Foods ListVisit our partnersBuy Keto Friendly Dry Farm WinesGet your KetoMoJo Here and test your ketones.Book mentioned: Survival of the Fattest, The Key to Human Brain Evolution by Stephen C. Most of us have some idea what dementia is. Though we toss the word ‘demented’ around as a put down, Dementia, and Alzheimers experienced up close is difficult to witness. Implications for Cognitive Health during Aging and the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Diseasehttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4937039/conclusion:Ketones are the brain’s main alternative fuel to glucose and brain ketone uptake is still normal in MCI and in early AD, which would help explain why ketogenic interventions improve some cognitive outcomes in MCI and AD. We suggest that the brain energy deficit needs to be overcome in order to successfully develop more effective therapeutics for AD. At present, oral ketogenic supplements are the most promising means of achieving this goal.A ketogenic drink improves brain energy and some measures of cognition in mild cognitive impairment https://www.researchgate.net/publication/332575159_A_ketogenic_drink_improves_brain_energy_and_some_measures_of_cognition_in_mild_cognitive_impairmentEmulsification Increases the Acute Ketogenic Effect and Bioavailability of Medium-Chain Triglycerides in Humans: Protein, Carbohydrate, and Fat Metabolism. 7-2017https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29955713Conclusions: Emulsification increased the ketogenic effect and decreased side effects in a dose-dependent manner for single doses of MCTs ≤30 g under matching conditions. Picking up where Dr. Cunnane left off in part one, we get into other aspects of ketones and what we know about them specifically, brain health, and how the brain’s ability to use ketones as a fuel does not diminish with age. Also the production of GABA and it’s effect of calming the hyperexcitable states of certain neurologic conditions like Epilepsy but also Alzheimers. Stephen Talks about the similarities between Alzheimers and Epilepsy and why some epilepsy medications help Alzheimers. I hope you enjoy listening to Dr. Cunnane as much as I did talking with him. Though he states others have come before him that have pointed to use of Ketones as an ‘alternative’ fuel for the brain, it is Dr. Cunnane’s work on the ‘Keto-Pet Scan’ that showed just how vital it is. To Many, the work of Dr. Cunnane offers incredible hope in how to restore brain function in those with MCI, mild cognitive impairment and AD. Pat Cunnane — Photo: Jon Tjhia ‘What's a POTUS?' Pat Cunnane, aged 22, asked a co-worker this question on one of his first days working at the White House. It's safe to say he figured out the answer pretty quickly, rising from his first job as White House media monitor to become the senior writer and deputy director for messaging for the POTUS himself, Barack Obama. In Cunnane's new book, West Winging It: An Unpresidential Memoir, he gives fascinating insider's account of his six years working at the heart of the Obama administration. During these years, Cunnane wrangled reporters and photographers and wrote statements, opinion pieces and even jokes in the former President's voice. He was there for the big moments and the small and he was there, of course, for the surprise transition to Donald Trump. With Sally Warhaft, Cunnane talks about what it's like writing the words that would shape hearts and minds of a nation, and the world. He also shares his thoughts on the American presidency then and now – and the minutiae of daily working life in the White House – talking Trump and Twitter; history and hope. Nearly five million people in the United States have Alzheimer’s disease. In 30 years, that number is estimated to be 16 million In today’s episode, Ken and Dawn interview Dr. Stephen Cunnane, a Canadian physiologist whose extensive research into Alzheimer’s disease is showing how ketones can be used as part of a prevention approach that helps delay or slow down the onset of Alzheimer’s. Cunnane is a metabolic physiologist at the University of Sherbrooke in Sherbrooke, Quebec. He is the author of five books, including” Survival of the Fattest: The Key to Human Brain Evolution,” which was published in 2005, and “Human Brain Evolution: Influence of Fresh and Coastal Food Resources,” which was published in 2010. He earned his Ph.D. in Physiology at McGill University in 1980 and did post-doctoral research on nutrition and brain development in Aberdeen, Scotland, London, and Nova Scotia. From 1986 to 2003, he was a faculty member in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto where his research focused on the role of omega-3 fatty acids in brain development and human health. He also did research on the relation between ketones and a high-fat ketogenic diet on brain development. In 2003, Dr. Cunnane was awarded a senior Canada Research Chair at the Research Center on Aging and became a full professor at the University of Sherbrooke. He has published more than 280 peer-reviewed research papers and was elected to the French National Academy of Medicine in 2009. She asks him about growing up in a suburb of Montreal. 4:02: Ken mentions that he has been told by a reliable source that as soon as Stephen got into high school he spent a lot of time in the chemistry lab, where sometimes created mischief. 4:58: Dawn asks if it is true that Stephen nearly flunked out of college when he first started. 5:16: Dawn comments that Stephen got his PHD in physiology at McGill University which is when his interest in science really caught on and asks how that came about. 5:55: Stephen talks about communicating with Desmond Morris while Stephen was working on his post-doc. 8:03: Dawn asks about Stephen’s post-doctoral research, for which he traveled to Aberdeen London and Nova Scotia; as well as what prompted his interest in nutrition in the brain. 9:01: Dawn mentions that in 1986 Stephen became a faculty member in the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto. She asks how he ended up teaching nutrition when he didn’t have a degree in nutrition. 10:33: Stephen talks about accepting a senior Canada Research Chair at the Research Center of Aging and a full professorship at the University of Sherbrooke. 11:57: Ken talks about Stephen’s interest in human evolution how it eventually led him to research the nutritional importance of shore-based foods and omega-3 fatty acid in particular in the development of human’s brains. He asks Stephen to talk about his work leading up to the hypothesis that humans evolved near the water.
