Cumberland Posey began his career in 1911 playing outfield for the Homestead Grays, a local black team in his Pennsylvania hometown. He soon became the squad’s driving force as they dominated semi-pro ball in the Pittsburgh area. By the late 1930s the Grays were at the top of the Negro Leagues with nine straight pennant wins. Posey was also a League officer; he served 13 years as the first black member of the Homestead school board; and he wrote an outspoken sports column for the African American weekly, the Pittsburgh Courier. He was also regarded as one of the best black basketball players in the East; he was the organizer of a team that held the consensus national black championship five years running. Ten years after his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, he became a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame—one of only two athletes to be honored by two pro sports halls of fame.

On Sunday, 41-year-old Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna "Gigi" Bryant, and seven other people passed away in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. May GOD rest their souls! We paid homage to him. Fans of Kobe are also finding different ways to memorialize the late icon. Over 1 million people have begun to sign a petition to make Kobe the new NBA logo. As of press time, more than 1.5 million individuals have signed the Change.org petition. The current goal is to get 3 million signatures, so the petition is halfway to reaching its objective. Presently, the NBA's logo includes a silhouette of fellow Lakers legend and the team's former general manager Jerry West who ironically drafted a 17-year old Kobe Bryant in 1996. I think this is only right! Unfortunately, in related news, an animated sitcom on the Comedy Central Network 3 years ago called Legends of Chamberlain Heights was predicted. The show - which aired in 2016 - depicted Kobe going down in a helicopter crash. A distressed Kobe is seen crawling out of the helicopter, and the character says to Kobe - "pass us the trophies, and we'll help you." Kobe refuses, and the helicopter explodes. The early reports of the crash are surprisingly similar. This is strange!! On a positive note, as people are still coming to grips with the sudden and untimely deaths the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the University of Connecticut will honor them in the wake of tragedy. It was announced back in December that Bryant was one of the 2020 Hall of Fame nominees. Now Kobe has been confirmed as a first-ballot enshrinement to be inducted. The ceremony will be held in August in Springfield, Mass. This is only right!! Taraji P. Henson could be set to channel late diva Whitney Houston on the big screen if the singer’s sister-in-law Pat gets her way. Pat is working closely with record executive Clive Davis, who played a key role in the "I Have Nothing" star’s rise to success, on the upcoming project. Whitney passed away at the age of 48 after she was found unconscious in a bathtub on February 11th, 2012. I can see this. The 'Illastr8 HOT TAKE' this week was, "what are some ‘red flags’ to look for when a loved one is in trouble or having issues?" Let us know what you think about this and tune in next week!

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame legend Dan Issel joins this week’s ‘cast to discuss his All-Star career in the American Basketball Association with two of the league’s most (relatively) stable franchises – the Kentucky Colonels and the Denver Nuggets.  And a brief cup of coffee with one its shakiest, in between. After an outstanding, twice-named All-American collegiate career at the University of Kentucky (where he still remains as all-time leading scorer) in the late 1960s, Issel spurned a draft call by the NBA’s Detroit Pistons for a chance to stay in the Commonwealth with the John Y. Brown-owned, Louisville-based Colonels. Joining an already solid lineup (including future Hall of Famer Louis Dampier), Issel immediately lit up the 1970-71 ABA with a league-leading 29.9 points-per-game – powering Kentucky to the ABA Finals (losing to the Utah Stars in seven games), and a share of the league’s Rookie of the Year title. An eventual six-time ABA All-Star (including his and the league’s final season with the later NBA-absorbed Nuggets), Issel’s prolific scoring touch help lead the Colonels to its first and only league championship in 1975 – later “rewarded” with an unpopular Brown-directed trade to Denver, by way of curious detour to the Baltimore Claws – a franchise that lasted only three pre-season games.  Issel ultimately became the ABA’s second all-time leading scorer (behind Dampier), and upon his retirement from the NBA Nuggets in 1985, only Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Julius Erving had amassed more points (he now sits 11th all time). We obsess with Issel about his trials and tribulations across the ABA – as well as his current role in helping Louisville return to the pro game with its pursuit of a long-elusive NBA franchise. Gola also helped the Philadelphia Warriors win the NBA championship as a rookie in 1956 and was named an All-Star five times before retiring in 1966. I had the pleasure to get to hear Dick Vitale give a motivational talk at a work event. I was blown away. And it wasn't just the celebrity awe we were all in, but his message, his passion and the genuineness of his investment in being with all of us. You can see he just wanted to be there and have an impact. I knew as I listened that I had to have him on the show, and I'm so honored to bring this episode to you. Dick Vitale, college basketball’s top analyst and ambassador, joined ESPN during the 1979-80 season -- just after the network’s September 1979 launch -- following a successful college and pro coaching career.  In 2008, Vitale received the sport’s ultimate honor when he was selected as an inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (after being named a finalist in 2004, 2006 and 2007) as a contributor.Vitale called ESPN’s first-ever NCAA basketball game – Wisconsin at DePaul on Dec. 5, 1979 (a 90-77 DePaul win).  Since then, he’s called close to a thousand games, including NBA contests for ESPN during the 1983 and ’84 seasons. But Vitale’s talents and influence extend way, way beyond just game analyst.  He provides commentary on a variety of topics in his "Dick Vitale's Fast Break" segment which airs Wednesday evenings during the college basketball season on SportsCenter, and serves as a college basketball analyst for ESPN Radio, including appearing each Monday on the “Mike & Mike in the Morning” show.  He has been a college basketball analyst for ABC Sports since 1988, and has also covered the NBA Finals and the 1992 Summer Olympics for ABC Radio.  His weekly ESPN.com column is one of the web site’s most popular features.“I’m living the American dream,” Vitale once said. “I learned from my mom and dad, who didn’t have a formal education, but had doctorates of love. They told me that if you gave 110 percent all the time, a lot of beautiful things will happen. I may not always be right, but no one can ever accuse me of not having a genuine love and passion for whatever I do. And ESPN has been grateful enough to recognize this.”And while his knowledge, preparation and enthusiasm are unparalleled, his “Vitale-isms” have unwittingly taken on a life of their own. Just a few of his many household phrases: “Awesome, Baby!,” “Get a TO, Baby!” (call a timeout), “PTP’er” (prime-time player), “M & M’er” (a mismatch), “Rolls Roycer” (a flat out superstar), “diaper dandy” (freshman star), “All-Windex Performer” (ferocious rebounder) and “Maalox time” (the final minutes of a close game). Vitale credits Hall of Fame broadcaster Jim Simpson, who he teamed with in the early 80’s, in helping him develop his broadcast style.Vitale’s roots are in teaching the game he’s loved since a child. Vitale is also quite the philanthropist. He’s on the Board of Directors of The V Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. For many years he’s awarded five scholarships annually to the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota (Fla.). Vitale’s also authored nine books, including one children’s title. Key Points from the Interview with Dick Vitale Wake up every day, have a plan and a goal. Know what you want to achieve that day and have a plan for how to achieve it. Dick lost sight in one of his eyes as a kid. As a result, he got picked on a lot because his eye would wander. He realized at an early age a lesson that’s served him across the years. You have two choices. You can roll over and do nothing, or you can pick yourself up and move forward. You can make excuses for the failure and let it grow, or you can say, “You know, I’m pretty good at what I do, and I can survive.” That attitude is what let him recover from the greatest failure of his career, when he was fired as head coach of the Detroit Pistons, a dream job for him. He has welcomed the attention and energy around him. When others question if it’s been tiring, he says he’s loved every moment of it. The people around him are who make him who he is. Have pride and passion in pursuit of your goals and dreams, a lot of positive things will happen. Be good to people and people will be good to you. Long-time Indianapolis pro hoops beat reporter Mark Montieth (Reborn: The Pacers and the Return of Pro Basketball to Indianapolis) joins host Tim Hanlon to delve into the intriguing story behind the efforts of late-1960s civic leaders to re-establish a top-tier professional franchise in the capital city of basketball-mad Indiana after a curious 14-year absence.    One of eleven charter franchises in 1967’s upstart American Basketball Association, the Indiana Pacers literally and figuratively “set the pace” early and often during the league’s nine-year existence – amassing three ABA championships, five finals appearances, and a dazzling array of All-Star talent including the likes of Freddie Lewis, Bob Netolicky, Billy Knight, and future Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductees Roger Brown, Mel Daniels, George McGinnis, and head coach Bob “Slick” Leonard. In a league synonymous with wild games, outsized personalities and vagabond franchises, the Pacers were a uniquely steady constant on the court, in the stands and with the local Indianapolis community – which later rewarded them with a downtown-transforming arena of their own in 1974, and ultimately, helped bolster their case to become one of only four ABA clubs to be included in the post-merger National Basketball Association in 1976. On this podcast, we get to hear from many different vantage points: artists, scientist, elite military, politicians, those who run highly successful businesses, and those who have been on the razor’s edge in the sports arena. When it comes to elite sport, there’s a rare breed that have succeeded as both player and coach — and winning championships in both roles is almost unheard of.That is why I wanted to sit down with Luke Walton, head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.Luke played in the NBA for 10 years, winning 2 championships. He’s coached for 4 years, winning one NBA title with the Golden State Warriors. But even more important to his track record, Luke is flat-out a phenomenal human being. He was hired as the 26th head coach in Lakers franchise history, the eighth individual to both play and coach for the organization, and is the youngest coach in the NBA.Luke has been around the game of basketball and legends his entire life. His dad, Bill, played under John Wooden at UCLA, is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players. The father/son duo are the only pair in NBA history to both win multiple NBA titles.Luke’s had the fortune of being coached by and playing with the likes of Lute Olson, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, and the list goes on and on.In this conversation, we talk about the impact these people have had on the way he looks at life and how he thinks about improvement. We discuss how relationships impact performance. We talk about the mindset that is required to make it at the professional level and why he believes mindfulness is an important part of that equation.I hope this conversation gives you some wonderful insight into how Luke approaches learning, living, growing and being in relationships to bring the best out of each other.Support Finding Mastery on Patreon! Penn State University professor emeritus Murry Nelson (Abe Saperstein and the American Basketball League, 1960–1963: The Upstarts Who Shot for Three and Lost to the NBA) joins Tim Hanlon to discuss the oft-forgotten second incarnation of the ABL – and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer who willed it into being.  In this hidden gem of an episode, Nelson describes:  How the master promoter of the legendary Harlem Globetrotters attempted to parlay his influence in pro basketball circles into securing his own West Coast NBA franchise, only to be rebuffed;  How the advent of reliable and speedy commercial air travel encouraged Saperstein to not only launch the upstart ABL, but with franchises in virgin pro basketball territories like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu, Hawaii; The peripatetic Washington-to-New York-to-Philadelphia Tapers, whose owner also secretly owned the relatively stable Pittsburgh Rens, featuring league superstar and future Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins; Why the ABL’s (and Saperstein-owned) Chicago Majors outdrew the more-established NBA’s cross-town Packers; and How an ambitious young shipbuilding scion named George Steinbrenner engineered a championship for his Cleveland Pipers franchise, only to sink the ABL the following season with an ill-fated plot to secretly bolt to the NBA.   This week’s episode is sponsored by our friends at Audible!

When former UCLA basketball player Don Barksdale died of cancer of the esophagus in March 1993,his passing was noted in a two-sentence obituary in The Times, a woefully inadequate summation of an extraordinary life. Barksdale, a 6-foot-6 center from Berkeley and a Bay Area legend not only as an athlete but also as a TV host, disc jockey, nightclub owner and philanthropist, was an African American trailblazer — “kind of like the Jackie Robinson of basketball,” says his friend and unabashed cheerleader, documentary filmmaker Doug Harris. Harris, a former Golden State Warriors draft pick who wrote, directed and produced a tribute to Barksdale’s life that will air next month on FSN Bay Area, believes his late mentor was worthy of much more than a footnote. Harris,46, is leading an effort to get Barksdale posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. “This is a person that people need to know about,” says Harris, whose exhaustive efforts already have helped land Barksdale in halls of fame honoring California community college athletes, African American athletes, Bay Area athletes and Pacific 10 Conference athletes. “I would like young people to know about Don Barksdale, know about his legacy, the way they know about Jackie Robinson.” As chronicled in Harris’ documentary “Bounce: The Don Barksdale Story,” which the filmmaker hopes also will air in Southern California, Barksdale was college basketball’s first African American consensus All-American — as a senior in 1947. He was the first black basketball player on the U.S. Olympic team, winning a gold medal in London in 1948. He broke the color line in the AAU’s national industrial league, which welcomed him when the NBA would not. And although others of his race beat him to the NBA by a year, Barksdale was the first African American to play in the NBA All-Star game, suiting up for the East in 1953. All this after Barksdale was left off the basketball team at Berkeley High — he was cut three years running — for reasons that had nothing to do with his ability. As Barksdale recounted years later, his friend Em Chapman already was on the team and coach Jack Eadie told Barksdale, “One black is enough.” Undeterred, Barksdale honed his skills at a Berkeley park, starred at Marin Junior College and followed his idols, Robinson and Kenny Washington, to Westwood, where in 1943 he helped UCLA end a 42-game losing streak against USC. After returning from World War II, where he served in the Army, Barksdale continued to star at UCLA while also kick-starting his business career by opening a record store on Western Avenue. Though his Olympic coach was Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp, a man not known for his racial tolerance, he was the third-leading scorer on the U.S. team in the 1948 Games. In 1949, the personable Barksdale was hired to be the Bay Area’s first black television host, moderating a program called “Sepia Revue” that featured the leading black entertainers of the day, among them Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr. and Louis Armstrong. In 1950, he was one of the first four black players taken in the NBA draft. But he was doing so well financially — by then, he had also opened a beer distributorship — that he didn’t sign with the Baltimore Bullets until 1951, when he doubled as a 28-year-old rookie forward and host of the Bullets’ postgame radio show. He played two seasons with the Bullets and two with the Boston Celtics, averaging 11 points and eight rebounds, before ankle injuries forced him to retire in 1955. Before leaving, though, he recommended Bill Russell to Red Auerbach. “It’s a travesty more people don’t know about him,” Harris says. After his playing days ended, Barksdale continued his successful business career, opening nightclubs in Oakland. He founded Save High School Sports, a fundraising effort in Oakland that was a savior to prep athletes during a budget crunch in the 1980s. And as a scout for the Warriors, he recom- mended they draft a 6-foot-8 Berkeley High graduate from Central Washington named Doug Harris. An eighth-round pick in 1983, Harris never played in the NBA, but he remained indebted to Barksdale and got to know him better through their work with Athletes United for Peace, a Bay Area nonprofit. Harris’ film on Barksdale was an outgrowth of the thesis he put together to complete work toward a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies that he earned from Cal State Monterey Bay in 1998. His lobbying for Barksdale since has been nothing short of a labor of love. On Feb. 16, he’ll find out if Barksdale is among the finalists being considered this year for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Whatever the result, Barksdale’s sister, Pamelia Barksdale-Gore, says she is “astounded” by Harris’ efforts on behalf of her brother. “Don would be very pleased and proud of all this,” she says. No big deal, Harris says. “It’s the right thing to do,” says the filmmaker, who since 1993 has served as executive director of Athletes United for Peace, which sponsors sports and media-arts programs for disadvantaged youth. “If we’re not proactive in telling some of these untold stories, they’ll never be told. Everybody will be gone.”

Coach Olson's lecture was given on November 20, 2006. As Lute Olson enters his 24th season at The University of Arizona, he has established both the Wildcat basketball program and himself as two of the preeminent figures on the collegiate basketball landscape. Olson, now in his fourth decade as a head coach, also has a title that befits those monumental accomplishments — Hall of Famer — as he was enducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. In a career full of individual and team accolades, this honor ranks among the best. Long considered one of the top coaches in Pac-10 history, he has led Arizona to 11 league titles, the latest in 2005. His 316 conference victories are the most in league history. Olson is the No. 2 coach in Pac-10 history for career winning percentage for conference games with more than two years experience, trailing only the legendary John Wooden. Olson became the 16th coach in basketball history (covering all levels) to register 1,000 career wins, when his Wildcats defeated Utah, 67-62, on Dec. 11, 2004. In his collegiate career, Olson has produced 52 NBA draft picks, including 31 at Arizona. Last year, there were 10 Arizona alums on NBA rosters, and Olson has had 13 former players appear in the NBA finals in the last 11 seasons. He was born on a farm just outside Mayville, N.D., on Sept. 22, 1934, and went on to attend high school in Grand Forks, N.D., for the 1951-52 season, where he led the team to the 1952 state basketball championship. In college, Olson was a three-sport athlete (basketball, football, and baseball) at Augsburg (Minn.) College from 1953-56. As a senior in 1956, he was recognized with the Augsburg Honors Athlete Award, which is given annually to the top male student-athlete. Since that time he also has been honored by his alma mater with induction into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 and received the Augsburg College Distinguished Alumni Award in April 1986. Olson's new autobiography, Lute!: The Seasons of My Life, tells the story of his more than forty years in basketball.
