Born in 1990 in Bangalow, Australia, not far from Byron Bay, Torren Martyn is hailed as one of the great stylists of our time, riding all manner of surfcraft, and with a special penchant for twin-fins. He's also one of surfing's great explorers. In 2016, he and his filmmaker pal Ishka Folkwell spent three months circumnavigating Australia in a Land Rover, riding A-grade waves and documenting their trip in the first installment of the film series Lost Track. In 2018, the duo did a similar trip around New Zealand, this time on motorcycles. In 2019, they bought a Ford Transit and drove it from Europe down to the west coast of Africa on a surf hunt. In 2022, Martyn and his partner, Aiyana Powell, bought a sailboat in Thailand and spent an entire year exploring surf breaks in and around Indonesia, culminating in the film Calypte. In this episode of Soundings, Martyn and Jamie Brisick talk about surfing in the middle of nowhere, forging a free-surfer's path, finding clarity and direction, cultivating a cartographic mindset, gaining confidence as a sailor, his quiver, and the logistics, preparation, and knowledge that went into planning for a year at sea.
Ever want to pack up normalcy and set sail over the horizon? What's it really like to live at sea for a year and rarely be further than 35 feet from your new significant other?Torren Martyn and Aiyana Powell talk us through the peaks and troughs of life aboard Calypte, a borrowed 35-foot sailing boat that they spent 12 months sailing 9,000-kilometres - from Pattaya in the Gulf of Thailand to Lombok, an Indonesian island east of Bali - a journey chronicled in their new independent film Calypte. With little practical sailing experience, Torren and Aiyana learned as they went – how to be fisherfolk, navigators, meteorologists, and mechanics to take care of running repairs — and still found plenty of surf along the way. Torren and Aiyana talk us through the happenstance of meeting, their time aboard Calypte – the trials of trust and communication at sea— and their newest adventure – starting a family together. As we discuss often on this podcast, “gender affirming care” can appeal to trauma survivors as an enticing way out of pain. Some of these people go through the entire process of medical intervention only to find themselves pursuing detransition. This week I am joined by Torren Danowski, a detransitioner who found himself in this exact situation. Torren and I discuss his unique story from his struggle with gender dysphoria, and his adventure with psychedelics, to the place of faith, religion, ministry and church in his life. Torren reminds us of the deeper work it takes to truly discover one's identity, and urges listeners to align your journey first with learning how to suffer well. Torren Danowski is a detransitioned man living in Philadelphia. He attempted transition twice in his early 30s after struggling with gender most of his life. But once he realized that his gender dysphoria was actually the symptom of something deeper, he began addressing that deeper issue, and saw the pain of gender dysphoria begin to subside. Torren was involved in Libertarian politics and ran for Pennsylvania State Representative in 2022. He has since stepped away from politics and is seeking a career change, moving from corporate America to exploring counseling, psychology, and theology. In episode 178 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Torren Danowski. Torren is the Founder of 'Don't Tread On Philly', a U.S. libertarian political organisation and the former Libertarian candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has also transitioned and then detransitioned at two different stages of his life. In this episode we discuss his experience of anxiety and depression, workplace bullying, perfectionism and how all of these factors led to the sex dysphoria he went onto experience. Once he began experiencing this dysphoria, he says he saw it and transition as an escape from the issues he was running away from. He is also brave enough to admit there was some elements of what my previous guest N-Jada called ‘romantic autogynephilia'. Torren transitioned and began going by his trans name of Audrey. However, after a dream he had followed by a 3-week period of realisation, he came to the conclusion that continuing to live as a transwoman was not the path for him and he subsequently detransitioned back to living as Torren. We discuss this entire journey, from transition to detransition and how he's got to the state of stability and happiness he is now. We also discuss how sex dysphoria is affecting the mental health of other young boys and men like him, why he thinks we need to move away from a black and white thinking towards treatment of sex dysphoria itself and what we need to do to help these boys find purpose, direction and the right path for them, whether its transition or not. In this episode, I have a conversation with Torren Danowski, founder of Don't Tread on Philly. Torren is a Christian who has gone through a journey through his struggle with gender dysphoria, which led him to, at one point in the past, live as a transgender woman. Torren shares his testimony and perspective, and then we dive into the current political landscape to explore where many conservative pundits are going astray in approaching the topic of transgenderism despite having mostly accurate positions on what the Bible teaches about sex, marriage, sin and our identities. In this episode, I briefly go into my thoughts on the "He Gets Us" Superbowl commercial, & where it gets some things right but some things wrong. I spoke with Torren at the end of 2020 about his struggles with gender, black and white thinking, and Obsessive-Compulsive ideation. A couple weeks ago he reached out to me inquiring if I had heard of psychedelic therapies for these issues, and I only had heard anecdotes. He then shared his libertarian podcast with me and I was amazed at his change of attitude and new-found confidence, so I wanted to have him back on to speak about what he's been through over the last (nearly) two years, in which he founded Don't Tread On Philly in response to the draconian civil rights violations of Philadelphia's pandemic response, and is now running for mayor on the Libertarian ticked. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Pennsylvania State Representative Torren Ecker rejoins the Dom Giordano Program after announcing today that he and other Republicans have put forth the articles of impeachment against Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. First, Ecker tells whether or not the Republicans are prepared for Krasner's counter, after the District Attorney tried tying the potential impeachment to the insurrection and calling it racist, among other things. Ecker tells that crime has gotten to the point that enough is enough and something needs to be done to ensure the safety of Philadelphians and the competence of the economy. Then, Ecker tells Giordano about the process now that the articles have been drafted, with Ecker previewing a Senate vote and the potential for hearings. Then, Dom offers an update on the live January 6th insurrection hearings, playing back a clip of former Attorney General Bill Barr undressing Dinesh D'Souza's new documentary 2000 Mules. Giordano takes umbrage with Barr's line of attack, explaining why Barr's allegations of anecdotal evidence, and why, when piled together, the evidence warrants a trend. (Photo by Getty Images)

In this edition of On Target, PA House Second Amendment Caucus Chairman Matthew Dowling welcomes Rep. Torren Ecker of Adams and Cumberland counties for a conversation about the importance of protecting our Second Amendment rights through support for legislation such as constitutional carry as well as strong opposition to red flag laws and other proposals that seek to diminish the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. This program was recorded in July 2021; subsequent to the recording, a constitutional carry measure was passed by the House and Senate but vetoed by the governor.
March 10th, 2022 Salt Lake City, UT - What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of someone pursuing art as a profession? Odds are, a mental image of the stereotypical starving artist has already popped up in your head. Traditional finance is about efficiency and ROI and streamlining processes. It's a ruthless world that's anything but inviting to those who want to chase a career in the finer pursuits of life. With that bleak overview out of the way, let's talk about the good news. How NFTs are Empowering Artists from Around the Globe NFTs, short for non-fungible tokens, could be the savior we need to spark an unstoppable transition where artists can thrive. Let's see how. Fair Compensation for ArtistsDue to the transparent and impartial nature of these digital ownership records, artists can easily partner with developers and business-savvy entrepreneurs without worrying about getting the raw end of the deal. The open nature of blockchain automatically puts the underlying dealings front and center, accessible and readable by anyone. While that may not seem like a big deal, it can make a world of difference when it comes to fair compensation for the artists. That's because not only can the artists see where the proceeds from the sales of their work are going, but the community can also uncover any unsavory practices. Lucrative Monetization OpportunitiesWhat makes NFTs truly revolutionary for artists, however, is how much easier they are to monetize with. In the world of traditional finance, only artists in the top 0.1% get to monetize their talent in a meaningful way. The rest of the creatives are left to fend for themselves. Most find themselves on social media, where they must cater to the ever-changing desires of the algorithms and attract legions of fans—all for a chance at making less than minimum wage in most cases. For instance, the artist Torren who goes by the name of Zane Customs on YouTube has diligently uploaded dozens of videos on that platform since starting last year. Driven by creativity and passion, this talented creative cherishes every comment he gets and is grateful for the opportunity to have his work put in front of over 40,000 viewers to date. Like any other artist, Torren is hoping to one day merge his passion with his profession and support his family from his YouTube channel. However, considering that YouTube typically pays out in the range of $3-10 per 1,000 views, that future may be a long way away. Undeterred, Torren has decided to take charge of his career by tapping into the endless opportunities unlocked by NFTs. The budding artist has partnered with a team to work on Zen Warrior NFT, a limited collection of 3,333 meticulously detailed and passionately conceived pieces of digital art. Unlike ad revenue, NFTs can help artists with small followings generate meaningful financial value. This is possible because NFTs can be resold for a profit and integrated into an ecosystem with multiple utilities. For instance, Zen Warrior NFT is a utility-driven project which will deposit 50% of the mint

Pennsylvania Representative Torren Ecker, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, joins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss the fallout in Harrisburg following a huge letter written by State Senator Jake Corman, calling for the house to open an impeachment for Larry Krasner. Ecker explains his stance on the impeachment and tells the temperature of other representatives, explaining why members of the assembly have responded with hesitation. Ecker tells of other proposals to help stymie the spike in violence in Philadelphia, and tells what's holding him back from throwing his full support behind the impeachment proposal. Full episode and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com This week's guest Torren Martyn is probably the most individual, interesting and certainly most celebrated surfer in the world right now. Draw a Venn diagram of all the modern-day talking points in surf culture - board length, style, the craving for some substance among a world of throwaway edits - and Torren would be right at the centre. As 2021 dawned, Torren's lazy, lanky style and mastery of the less-than-obvious board length had already seen him lauded as one of the modern greats. Then he released Lost Track: Atlantic, a four-part, three-hour long collaboration made with his best mate and long-term foil Ishka Folkwell that marked the high watermark of the pair's creative partnership. Why? Firstly because it's a beautifully-made piece of work that, as it languidly documents the duo's journey from Scotland to Senegal in ‘Donna', their beat-up old Transit, repurposes the surf road trip dream in a way that is quietly innovative, yet as comfortingly familiar as that first post-lockdown pint. Secondly, because of what this defiantly old-fashioned approach signifies in the modern surf era. In a time of quick cut vlogs and Insta clips, Torren and Ishka have taken it back to more reflective era, when surf films were a satisfyingly cohesive package of music, surfing and culture. Throw in Torren's beautiful surfing and Ishka's unique eye, and you have the recipe for what was immediately recognised as a modern classic. Yep, I'm a fan. Indeed, I've been trying to get Torren on since I saw the first episode, and after a few months of email tennis we finally made it happen in September 2021. This one is just a lovely open chat with somebody who is a warm and impressive as his incredible surfing. I'm hugely grateful to Torren and Ishka for brightening an otherwise dire year with their visionary work, and to Torren for taking the time to unpick the whole thing for this episode. This is a good one. Enjoy. Enjoying the podcast? Want to keep it free and ad-free? Donate here: https://bit.ly/LSBuyPint Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

Pennsylvania State Representative Torren Ecker rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss the announcement by Governor Wolf to impose a mask mandate for Pennsylvania schools. Rep. Ecker explains the situation that has led to this decision, explaining that Wolf somewhat went through a back door to impose said mandate. Ecker explains how a decision like this relates to the Emergency Act legislation that Republicans set forth earlier in the Coronavirus pandemic. Rep. Ecker explains that he continues to push for local control, saying that legislation that he supports is in the works to help reinforce the power of local governments which, in Rep. Pennsylvania Representative Torren Ecker joins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a meeting that took place yesterday in Harrisburg featuring lawmakers debating how to solve the hiring crisis playing out for businesses across the state of Pennsylvania. First, Ecker tells us a little bit about himself, explaining that he's headquartered in the heart of Adams County, in South Central PA. Then, circling back to the meeting, Ecker explains his thoughts on the general situation, pointing toward the extended unemployment benefits as the main culprit. When asked about the Left's solution of raisinig the minimum wage rather than eliminating the benefit, Ecker notes that local businesses are offering up to 17 or 18 dollars an hour to incentivize employment, so raising the minimum wage to $15 would do nothing to solve the cause. Then, Giordano and Ecker discuss the new work search requirements set forth by the Wolf administration, which means people receiving unemployment benefits must apply for two jobs and complete one work-search activity from an approved list options each week, such as attending a job fair or taking a pre-employment test.
Scholar Torren Gatson, guest editor for the current edition of the MESDA Journal, comes on the pod to talk about an iron fireback (a metal plate protecting the back wall of a fireplace) produced at the Vesuvius Furnace in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Established by revolutionary war veteran Joseph Graham, the furnace depended on slave labor—oftentimes quite skilled—as well as that of freedmen and white women. Gatson’s research paints a compelling picture of the unique work culture this state of affairs produced.

When you decide that your journey as an entrepreneur has begun, that trek will never end. Arik Torren had family inspiration, and a lust for life when he set out to do that thing that would ultimately define his career. Agave Spirits have grown profoundly as a category in the US, but much the interest in Mezcal and Raicilla wouldn't have occurred without Arik's passion and tenacity. We chat restaurants, his baby Fidencio Mezcal, teaching, and more.

It may be fair to say that Joshua and Jason know their way around whisky be it Scotch, American, or otherwise. When it comes to mezcal, well, it's no secret that they, like many people, could use a primer, a 101, if you will, in agave spirits. Joshua flew down to Oaxaca to meet with Arik Torren of Fidencio spirits and Enrique Jiménez of Del Amigo distillery to learn from the masters. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- Blue Yeti for making great microphones- RØDE for making *really* great microphones- Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
Millennial Minds Eps 2: Black Male Educators with Torren Cooper by Yasmine Arrington
Torren Martyn in a short story about a long session in Indonesia. The trip itself was a short spontaneous one, this is one of if not my favourite waves to visit. It's just one of those places that I really enjoy spending self time at, reading, thinking, early mornings and early nights just simple living. I find the ocean there so unpredictable and mesmerising, one of those places you can sit and just about stare at the ocean all day and never really know what's going to happen next.
