We report the latest from Israel after a wave of surprise Palestinian attacks. Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, will pay "an unprecedented price" for their offensive across the border. Thousands of rockets were fired from Gaza, with gunmen entering Israel across land and sea. Israeli fighter jets have been striking Gaza in retaliation. It's a momentous week in Rome where the Catholic Synod is taking place for the first time with laymen and women. Seventy of them will have a vote as they consider topics including LGBTQ Catholics and the role of women in the church. It's inspiring hope in those who see an opportunity for change and anger in others. Could it lead to a schism in the church? We hear from two Catholic commentators, theologian Tina Beattie and journalist Edward Pentin. France has banned its athletes from wearing the Muslim hijab headdress at next year's Olympic games in Paris. The Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera says the ban will ensure ‘absolute neutrality' at the games, a stance rooted in a principle of French law known as laïcité, which legally prohibits state recognition of any religion. Some have protested that it's a restriction on freedom of expression. We hear the arguments on both sides. A new report highlights a culture of elitism within the Church of England and how working class clergy are left feeling marginalised, ignored and misunderstood. Bishop of Barking, the Rev Lynne Cullens, who's from a working class background herself, tells us how the report could help the church to address its problem with class. Phil Booth's college career is one of the best we've seen when you combine winning, personal accolades, stats, and truly leaving an impact on a program. The two-time national champion sat down with us to discuss his time playing under Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright, and what went into his unforgettable performance in the 2016 national championship game where he scored a team high 20 points off the bench against North Carolina Booth also shared the floor with current NBA franchise cornerstones in Jalen Brunson & Mikal Bridges, as well as Donte Divencenzo and Josh Hart who recently joined Brunson in New York. Booth breaks down the development of each of there games, and what it's been like seeing there careers ascend to new heights post Villanova. We get into Booth's decision to sign with Sig Strasbourg of the French league, and what went into his decision at this stage of his career. Plus we get into the best cities to visit in Europe, must have's for a night out, and what's next after basketball for Phil! Alistair Dutton has just been appointed as Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis, which does relief and development work in more than 200 countries. He tells Edward Stourton about the challenges of his new role and his hopes for the future of the organisation. The war has already caused the deaths of thousands of Orthodox Christians. We speak to the author of a new book which throws light on this and examines how the war has affected religious life in Ukraine. Kelly Shupp on Campaigns, Rare Breeds and Generational Change Kelly Shupp, Professional Handler, joins host Laura Reeves for a deeply insightful conversation about running a show campaign, the challenges of competing with rare breeds and the generational change happening in her circle. [caption id="attachment_12116" align="alignleft" width="421"] Kelly grew up with German Wirehaired Pointers bred under the Mountain View prefix.[/caption] Shupp grew up with purebred dogs owned by her mom, AKC judge Claire Wisch Abraham. Starting with Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and transitioning early to German Wirehaired Pointers, the mother-daughter team competed in shows, field events and obedience. In 2012, Phil Booth showed their homebred GWP Oakley, GCH CH Mt. View's Ripsnortersilvercharm, owned by Victor Malzoni, to #1 All Breeds. Shupp was mentored by top professional handlers in the US and Brazil, including Booth, Damara Bolte, Angela Lloyd and Jane Myers, before launching her full-time handling career. In 2022, she showed the Spinone Italiano Josie, GCHG CH Collina D'Oro Solo Un Bacio, to a record- breaking career, capped with winning the Sporting Group at the AKC National Championship. [caption id="attachment_12119" align="alignright" width="419"] Kelly and Josie share a special bond.[/caption] “It is a special thing to run a rare breed,” Shupp said. “They're not always in the placements. There's judges that will point to rare breeds and judges that won't. It's a game. We learn certain chess pieces that fit and ones that don't. With a rare breed they're very specific (pieces) for sure." Generational change is taking over in the handling ranks, Shupp noted. “This year we had so many young people in the group ranking competitions,” Shupp said. “Blake and Arial in the terrier group, me and Joanne in the sporting group.” Planning a campaign includes evaluating a budget, competition and geographical location. “The conversation I typically have with a client the start of the year is you go hard through March, see how it goes. Are you placing a lot in groups? Winning 75% of your breeds? You see if you can start placing more. "You never go into a year saying I'm going to be #1 sporting dog. You see how it goes. Those are things you don't really say. Those high-end top dog races just kind of happen.” Flashback episode on planning a campaign. More pro tips: Ask the right questions to find the right handler for you. Have those sounding boards to talk about judges and shows with experience-based knowledge. You can't be better if the people around you don't want to help you be better. Know your standard. Know about the breed you're presenting. It's such an important part of our job. To be an ambassador for the breed. To honor the breed. Flip flops are deadly…. Everything happens for a reason. The greats never stop learning.

In this week's Villanova Basketball Report, with Bob Long, Kevin Long, and Kevin McClernand, we discuss the first few weeks of the season and the transition from the four early departures from last year to a young, inexperienced team searching for an identity. In the "Opening Tip" we discuss the Advocare Invitational Championship, the role of key players such as Phil Booth, Eric Paschall, Colin Gillespie, and Cole Swider, among others, and the struggles for Jahvon Quinerly this far. Next was the "V's and O's" segment where Bob demonstrated on the whiteboard why the development of Cole Swider and Joe Cremo as sharpshooters on the outside to space the floor is a key for this team's offensive style to succeed. We concluded the show with our weekly "Pick 'Em" segment, drawn up by Kevin McClernand.

The care.data programme in the NHS came off the rails, despite – or possibly because – officials tried presenting it as an ‘open data’ initiative. It isn’t. But this conflation of ‘data sharing’ with open data is far from unique; from the National Pupil Database to your tax records and Cabinet Office’s resurrection of plans for mass sharing of citizen data that last surfaced in an obscure clause in the 2009 Coroners and Justice Bill, the government has designs on your data. With Phil Booth - former national coordinator of NO2ID, who now coordinates medConfidential, which campaigns to ensure every flow of data into, across and out of the NHS and care system is consensual, safe and transparent. Slides for this talk can be found here - http://www.scribd.com/doc/228429932/Friday-lunchtime-lecture-Why-selling-people-s-medical-tax-school-records-isn-t-open-data-by-Phil-Booth

The National Pupil Database monitors over 400 variables, covering every year of a child’s education from nursery to A-levels. Anyone who attended state schooling in England since 1997 is included; data is taken automatically from school systems and is never deleted. The data is currently used to support decision-making, statistical analysis, targeted funding, performance monitoring and educational research. The government now proposes to 'widen access' to the NPD, making information it contains available to a range of of organisations including commercial enterprises and the media. Can such personal data be treated as open data? Phil Booth, former national coordinator of NO2ID and co-director of TRUTH2POWER, and Terri Dowty, former director of Action on Rights for Children and also a director of TRUTH2POWER will introduce you to the database, what data is collected and why everyone needs to know how it operates.
